About GeoRox

GeoRox is an academic, professional and social, student-run society within the

Geological Engineering undergraduate program at the University of British

Columbia. We provide valuable opportunities to our members which help

supplement their academic careers.

Moreover, we always aim to create a welcoming environment that supports

students in their academic, professional and social development throughout

their Geological Engineering degree. GeoRox involvement has consistently

resulted in lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories.

The contents of this package include an overview of our key events. These

include the Alumni & Industry Dinner, Geotechnical Engineering Competition

(GEC) and Distinguished Lecture. Our events are often held in combination

with faculty, industry, professional associations and other student

organizations. The objectives of these events are to accommodate students

building professional networks, establishing relationships with their peers

and gaining technical knowledge.

With the generous support from industry, GeoRox is able to foster a

memorable and distinct university experience for our members. Your

continued contributions over time has helped stimulate quality in the UBC

Geological Engineering program. We invite you to read about some of our

events that industry sponsorship helps support.

Message from the Director

As we prepare to build on our 100 years of UBC Geological Engineering, I

would like to thank our friends, colleagues, and industry partners for their

support in helping to make UBC Geological Engineering one of the top

programs of its kind. Vancouver is a key international centre for the

geotechnical, mining, and energy resource sectors, and engaging industry

helps to expose our 175+ students to the remarkable projects being carried

out by local companies and the career opportunities that await them when

they graduate.

GeoRox – the student club of the UBC Geological Engineering program - is one

of the most active student clubs on campus and plays a pivotal role in

enriching the student experience by organizing professional outreach events,

such as the annual Alumni Dinner and Distinguished Geological Engineering

Lecture, as well as design competitions and field trips where students can

escape the classroom and be exposed to the

working environment. It is for this reason that

our program enthusiastically supports

GeoRox in their activities, and we encourage

and thank our industry partners for doing so

as well.

Thank you,

Prof. Erik Eberhardt, P.Eng.

Director, UBC Geological Engineering

Each year, the UBC Geological Engineering Club (GeoRox) assembles a wide

variety of events for our students to enjoy and participate in. Our club has had

a long history of educational and professional development as well as

engaging in numerous extra-curricular activities. Our great team of executives

and elected reps organise a range of events including educational field trips,

peer mentorship, course study sessions, our annual Geotechnical Engineering

Competition, and our annual Alumni and Industry Dinner.

Without the continuous and generous support from our alumni and industry

sponsors, we would not be able to put on these great events. With

sponsorship, we can flourish as a club and start new club initiatives for

members and others in the community. The 2018-19 sponsorship package

outlines the events and sponsorship opportunities that we offer. As always,

thank for your support and we look forward to seeing you at our future

events!

overcome the sponsorship hurdle. Your support allows GeoRox to provide

personal and professional development opportunities that benefit the next

generation of industry members.

Alumni & Industry Dinner

January, 2019

8

The Alumni & Industry Dinner is held annually and is the largest event hosted by GeoRox.

Held in January, GeoRox invites all current students, faculty, alumni and applicable

industry members to gather for an evening including a formal dinner and presentations

from GeoRox, faculty and honored alumni. This dinner allows us to honor the

achievements of outstanding GeoRox alumni and facilitate networking between students

and professionals. Thanks to continued strong engagement from student and industry,

the event has grown over time with over 100 attendees in recent years. With your

continued strong support, we aim to continue this tradition with another successful

dinner in January.

Geotechnical Engineering Competition

March, 2019

The annually held Geotechnical Engineering Competition (GEC) is a one-day engineering

design competition between teams of students from various academic years. A design

problem is provided by either our faculty, or an industry sponsor. Teams are given 6

hours to solve the problem and then present to a panel including faculty and industry

representatives. The GEC is unique since students have the chance to combine their

academic knowledge with problem solving skills to tackle a real world based challenge.

As teams are comprised of students representing various academic years, the GEC allows

for team management opportunities for senior students and design experience for junior

students. Your contribution will allow us to continue to develop this exciting event.

Distinguished Lecture

March, 2019

Each year, UBC GeoRox co-hosts a special evening lecture with the Vancouver

Geotechnical Society. Here, students, faculty and industry members gather to attend a

lecture given by an honored guest. The lecture is based on Geological Engineering topics

and has included subjects such as hydrogeology, dam foundations, geomorphology and

debris flow hazards. Recent Distinguished lecturers include Leslie Smith, Oldrich Hungr,

Richard Goodman and Suzanne Lacasse. This event presents an opportunity for all

attendees to learn about a specialized topic within Geological Engineering and for

students to network with local geotechnical professionals. Your support will help us

attract high profile speakers to UBC and to continue hosting this popular event.

Field Trips

October, 2018 & February, 2019

Geological Engineering entails heavy emphasis on the field; our field trips are designed to

provide students with opportunities to visit various sites and learn outside of the

classroom. Every year GeoRox hosts two field trips to project sites, geological landforms,

or other locales related to Geological Engineering. Notable trips include tours of

Geohazards along the Sea-to-Sky Highway, Copper Mountain Mine and the Upper Lillooet

Hydro Project. These trips represent a valuable bonding experience for the close-knit

GeoRox community and also facilitate professional development. For many, this trips

represent their first exposure to geological engineering in action. Students of all years

attend this event and sponsors are always welcome to join in to support our learning.
