MISSIDN2DIB

TechFest was founded on the idea to showcase all the local industries that support education in:

science, engineering, technology, and mathematics. We have been working towards this goal for 10

years now and have been adapting and evolving at every turn. From our experience we have been

able to build a foundation for making the event more tangible on a larger scale. The main concepts

are broken into three parts: Do, Connect, and Learn ..

Do. With a landscape as diverse and vibrant as both the STEM industry and our educational system

it is hard to understand the scope of how and what is possible. A large portion of the event is

devoted to the demonstrating of the student's skills and abilities because we feel like it is the best

way to let them celebrate their love for STEM. We formatted TechFest as a seven event competition,

revolving around critical thinking, mathematics, science, and a number of technical skills. The

events themselves may change event-to-event but the spirit is always the same. Local industry

partners plan, judge, and host the events. So the students get to apply real world practices in a

friendly competitive environment. But more importantly it facilitates the second fundamental

concept of TechFest: Connect.

Connect. With high school students getting bombarded by schools and parents to figure out what

they want to do in a four year time line, we understand. It's not easy picking a career. By competing

in the events, or participating in the career fair we wanted to provide a way for them to have a

chance to connect with our industry partners. This also isn't just an opportunity for the students.

The teachers and schools get a chance to see what's in demand in context to curriculum for

graduates and placing them on a successful path. Connecting schools, partners, and students is

something we've been working towards since the beginning. It's the heart behind TechFest and we

believe it's the perfect format to help incubate the last core concept for Tech Fest; Learn.

Learn. If the first two concepts are the actions this is the result. Ultimately we can't force the

groups gathered at our event to do anything. The goal is to get them to learn from one another and

help improve the way we approach education in the northeast Indiana region so we might produce

students who have an interest in the field of study. We also want to help the students get placed in

an environment that will help them further their education throughout their career. Then most

importanly help retain the talent in the region because the students know what is available and have

built an extensive professional network in the area.

We are confident that the platform we have built is something that is going to benefit all who are

involved and help make Indiana a STEM friendly state.
