It is said that great o ense puts people in the stands but great de ense wins championships. To be success ul on the eld o play you need to be solid in both phases o the game as well as in special teams. It is important to plan how your team is going to approach the game roman o ensive point o view. What type o o ense will you be; a tough grind it out running team or perhaps a wide open spread team thatwants to throw the ootball on every down? The key to answering that question is a core understanding o what your strengths, and moreimportantly, what your weaknesses are as a coach. Coaches must always be learning, educating themselves on the basic undamentals o the game, learning new and better ways to teach those undamentals, and learning to develop an organized approach to practice and gamemanagement. There ore, the best o ense to run or your team is the o ense you can best teach, and most importantly, the o ense yourplayers can learn and then execute. The best coaches put their players in positions that ensure that they can be success ul; kids willrespond to being success ul and will enjoy their experience and continue to play this great game.

ScheMeO ensive schemes have evolved over time and they continue to evolve every all with new twists and wrinkles to basic schemes. While scheme is important in that it does give your team an approach a philosophy i you will the most important element to scheme is being undamentally sound in your approach. The basic undamentals o stance, rst step, blocking, ball security, and the Center-Quarterback snap exchange must be worked on every day. Never think o these things as the little thingsbut rather these are the important things. Teams that do those things the best are almost always more success ul. For thisplaybook we have employed very basic split back and I ormation schemes with basic plays to attack all areas o the eld. Thisis a great o ensive scheme to teach young players and to expand on as the players become more experienced and skilled.

    Introduction to Offensive Schemes

This playbook was developed or coaches who are new to using this scheme.

BInGO cAll This re ers to a call a ball carrier will make to alert the rest o his team that he is changing the play during the action. For example, a pass play may have been called in the huddle but the player with the ball may have to run with the ball instead o passing it. He calls BINGO or another designated word to alert the linemen that they can get down feld.

BOX The Box area is generally considered the area rom just outside the Tight Ends or Tackle (when an End is split) and about 3 yards on each side o the Line o Scrimmage.

dIrectIOnAl SteP This is a frst step rom a stance position where the player aims directly or his assigned location. For instance, on a straight ahead dive play the back receiving the hand o will take a directional step towards the hole called in the huddle.

edGe The edge is the area outside the Tight Ends or Tackle (when an End is split) and out to the sideline on each side o the ball.

GAP The Gap is the area between each O ensive Linemen in any given ormation. They are lettered rom the Center going out, or example between the Center and each Guard is the A Gap and the area between the Guards and the Tackles is the B Gap, the areabetween the Tackles and the Ends is the C Gap.

Ice This is short or Isolation and defnes a series o plays where a Back will lead a ball carrier through a hole and block the de ender the play has called to be Isolated.

JAB SteP This is a timing step that Backs will use to ensure a play ake has time to materialize and not get them to the ball too quickly.A Jab Step almost always is a step in the opposite direction rom where the Back will end up going.

lOS This stands or Line o Scrimmage and is the imaginary line that runs rom the ootball to each sideline.

OPen PlAy SIde This describes the direction the Quarterback goes once he has received the snap rom the Center. I he Opens Play Side then he turns in the direction that the ball will end up going.

POInt OF AttAcK This describes the specifc hole or gap in which the ball is designed to go. I a dive play has been called or the 2 Hole then that spot is the Point o Attack. O ensive Linemen must understand where the Point o Attack is to apply their blocking rules properly.

reVerSe OUt This describes the direction the Quarterback goes once he has received the snap rom the Center. I he Reverses Out then he turns in the opposite direction rom where the ball will end up going.

    Introduction to Formations

All o ensive plays start rom a ormation that dictates where all 11 players line up prior to the start o the play. Our playbook will utilize threedi erent line ormations and two di erent back eld ormations. There are always adjustments and changes a coach can make to theseormations, however, it is important when coaching young players that you ocus more on the basic undamentals o the game and less oncomplicated ormations and motions. Teams that do just a ew things very well will be more success ul than those teams that do many thingsless than well.

lIne FOrMAtIOnThe basic rules o ootball require that 7 O ensive players be on the line o scrimmage and set or a second be ore the ball is snapped. You can havemore than 7 on the line, but only the widest player on the LOS on each side o the ball is eligible to go down eld and catch a pass.

BAcKFIeld FOrMAtIOnSSince 7 players are required by rule to be on the LOS prior to the start o a play, 4 players can be o o the LOS and rules allow them to move sideways, backwards, and reset. We will not show any motion or resetting in this playbook. We will, however, move our Wing Back, including setting him in anatural Wing position and also fanking him out as a wide receiver. We will show the deep Backs in a Split Backs ormation as well as an I ormation. You should set their depth away rom the ootball based on their speed and how long it takes them to execute a simple dive play. In the Split Backsormation it is best to set them at 4 yards rom the ball and then adjust it accordingly. In the I ormation, be ore the ball is snapped, the up back shouldbe at 3 yards and the deep back at 4 yards. Finally, when in a Split Back ormation, we will always line the 3 back on the same side o the ormation as the Wing (2 back), the Quarterback is designated as the 1 back.

PlAy cAllInGFor the purpose o understanding the various ormations, back eld action, and blocking schemes we will use clear language throughout this play-book to identi y all these elements. Coaches can elect to simpli y some o the terms to make play calling a little easier. For example, as opposed tousing I Formation or Split Backs you can use colors to de ne each ormation. Whatever plan you use it is important to keep the terminology

consistent beginning on the rst day o practice. The players will learn through repetition.

    Numbering System

nUMBerInG SySteMIn order to have all players understand what the desired point o attack is we will assign a number to the gaps between the O ensive Linemen. Usingnumbers to both assign the hole we are aiming or and or each o the backs it makes it easier to call a play in the huddle and have everyone locate the Point o Attack. We will however, call some plays such as the Wing Trap and the Sweep Play by simply calling a direction: Right or Le t.

We will number the holes to the right o the Center with even numbers and holes to the le t with odd numbers.

trAP BlOcKInGA Trap play is designed to get the De ense fowing in the wrong direction with back eld action and then have the ball come back the other way.The O ensive Line allows a down lineman (the rst down lineman beyond the A gap) to come across the LOS, and the backside Guard pullsdown the line to execute the Trap block, he should block him rom the inside out. The playside Tackle, Guard, and Center all down block in theopposite direction o the Trap. The playside End out blocks, while the back side Tackle and End apply base rules.

hOOK BlOcKThis is a block usually executed by an End when trying to run the ootball out to the Edge or wide. The O ensive player tries to get his head andshoulders to the outside o a de ensive player and try to turn him back inside.

StAlK BlOcKA Stalk Block is per ormed by the Split Ends or Flankers when they are set outside o the box and when trying to run the ball to the edge. Theplayers take o as i they are running a pass pattern and they attack the De ensive Player without passing him. Once the De ender reads that itis a run play and begins to attack the ball carrier the O ensive players begin to block them, i t is important that they stay between the ball carrierand the de ender with quick eet and contact.

dOUBle teAMWe use the Double Team block on all o our Ice Series plays. The O ensive Linemen must work together and not allow the De ensive player to

split the double team. They should drive the de ender into the second level and shut down any back side pursuit. You have to win every double team block and communication is important.

crAcK BlOcKWe will use a Crack Block when running a sweep play to the outside. The Flanker or Split End will come down rom the outside to block the rstde ender he sees coming rom the box. It is important to note that the rules o ootball do not allow a player to come rom the outside and into thebox area and block a player in the back, the Crack Block should be under control and contact should be made above the waist and in the chest.

FInAl POIntSTo execute during games you must per ect all the undamentals o blocking in practice. A great block starts with a great stance, great rst step, great pad level, and explosion through the de ender. Players should block until the re eree blows the whistle to stop play and never stop moving their eet. Communication is very important so all Linemen are on the same page.

I you are nding it di cult to run inside, try taking bigger splits (the space between each lineman) and see i the de ense will continue to lineup wider and wider with the splits.

t div P a is a staple o this o ense not only because it can yield positive yards on a consistent basis, but also because it sets up other playswithin the o ense. It requires a great line surge by the o ensive line and an explosive take o by the running back to ght or tough yar ds.

4 Ball carrier pad level should be low, ball must be well secured, and the eet should never stop moving orward.4 Carry out the post hando akes, do not get lazy.4 Linemen should communicate on the Line o Scrimmage, i they have a gap de ender they need to know who is blocking him.

    Passing - ROUTES

Passing the ootball is something that Coaches should embrace and commit to and not be a raid to implement into their o ensive

scheme. Like any other phase o the game, it requires practice to attain the proper skills, coordination and timing. A solid passinggame will involve more players and orce the de ense to respect the threat, thus making the running game more e ective.

rOUteS:We use several routes in the playbook and the depth o the routes should be adjusted or the age and skill level o your players. It does not make sense to have a player run a 20 yard post route i the Quarterback can not throw the ootball that ar. Coaches mayelect to number pass routes using a standard passing tree. The Passing Tree assigns numbers to each route. Making it possible tocall pass plays with a three number system. Even numbers are inside routes and odd numbers outside, the call always goes romle t to right across the ormation or the eligible receivers.

    (0) hi The receiver sprints up feld, stops his movement at 4 yards with his outside oot, and turns back inside, moving towards the LOS.(1) dump The Dump route is a very quick pass to a Tight End. He releases inside his de ender and clears the LOS and looks or the

t Swi g / S Pass is a high percentage pass that can gain big yards against an undisciplined de ense. The di erence between the two

However, the Screen Pass is a play designed to get O ensive Linemen out in ront o the Back and can be di cult tocoordinate.
