    What is beverage?

    A beverage is a drink or liquid prepared

    for human consumption.Water is not usually classified as a

    beverage.They may include tea, coffee, liquor,

    beer, milk or soft drinks.

    Beverages can broadly be classified intotwo:

    Non alcoholic beverages

    Alcoholic beverages

    Non Alcoholic

    They contain no alcohol.

    They are generally drunk forrefreshment or to quench thirst.

    Non alcoholic beverages are furtherclassified into soft or cold drinks, hotbeverages and non-alcoholic beer.

    containing ethanol/ethyl alcohol,

    commonly known as alcohol.The alcoholic beverages are divided into

    three general classes:

    beers,wines and spirits.

    The distilling processIt is process used to separate mixtures

    that contain more than one liquid of

    different boiling points.Distillation often follows fermentation.Fermentation is used to produce

    alcoholic beverages. Grain is fermented to make beer, while

    grape juice is fermented to make wine.

    Contd Beer and wine never contain more than

    around 12% alcohol, because any higherconcentration kills the yeast thatproduce the alcohol. To make strongerdrink, distillation is used.

    ContdSince ethyl alcohol boils at only 83C

    while water boils at 100C, the alcohol

    will boil off, leaving the water behind. The alcohol vapors are then condensed

    and collected. Distillation can produce

    liquors that range from 40-95% ethylalcohol.

    ContdThere are two main methods of

    producing spirits, either by the pot still method which is

    used for full, heavy flavored spirits suchas brandy, or

    the patent still (Coffey) method whichproduces the lighter spirits such asvodka.

    BrandyThis is spirit from wine.

    The main types of brandy are cognac,Armagnac, grappa and calvados.

    The alcoholic content of brandies isbetween 36%-60% by volume.

    Brandies are usually served chilled orwith ice.

    WhiskyWhisky is a spirit made from cereals:Types of whisky;

    Scotch whisky from malted barley, Irish whisky from barley, American whisky and Bourbon from

    maize/corn and rye.Canadian Whiskey from corn/maize The alcoholic content is between 40%-50%

    by volume.

    products of sugar cane (molasses). It isavailable in dark and light varieties.

    The most famous brands are; CaptainMorgan, Malibu (Coconut), Bacardi,

    GinUsually made from maize or rye.Malted barley is also an alternative

    to the two cereals.They are flavored with juniper

    berries and coriander seeds.

    VodkaDescribed as a colorless and flavorless

    spirit.

    Originally made from mashed wheat butnow also made from rye, molasses,soybeans, grapes, corn or potatoes. Thealcoholic content of vodka is between
