He checked the woman’s license with dispatch, and learned that she was wanted out of Alma for forgery in obtaining controlled substances. She was taken into custody. A search of her pocketbook also led to charges of possession of prescription pills not in their original container. (Yep, you’ve gotta keep them blood pressure pills in the pill bottle the pharmacist gives you or you could be taken to jail.) • An Officer checked a license plate on a silver Isuzu Rodeo parked at a convenience store. It came back to a stolen Rodeo from Savannah. When the man and woman walked out of the store and started to get into the SUV, they were ordered to the ground and handcuffed, charged with possession of stolen property. A look inside the vehicle turned up a pipe and a bag of marijuana. The pair were taken to jail, and the Isuzu was towed to be held for the Savannah Police Department. • Just before 2am, an Officer noticed a blue Mustang that crossed the fog line on Hwy 30. He made a traffic stop and smelled the odor of alcohol on the young woman’s breath. When he checked her driver’s license, he realized she wasn’t old enough to be drinking. He had her submit to an alcosensor test, which verified the presence of alcohol. The young man in the passenger seat was asked if the woman had been drinking, and he said that she’d had a few sips from his drink earlier in the evening. She was arrested for DUI Underage, and he was arrested for Furnishing Minors with Alcohol. Officers responded to a residence in a trailer park, and found a Pit Bull tethered by a logging chain with a bowl of water but no food. The home/pet owners were not present, and the Officers soon learned that they were out of town. Animal Control was notified and advised they would be out the next morning. Rincon • A man checked his bank account online and found that someone had stolen and was using his checks in Rincon. He went to WalMart, and security personnel there said they’d be happy to turn over the surveillance video of the offender to Police Officers. Weirdly, it’s not the one that got separated in the wreck about eight years ago- it’s the left one. Despite be- ing left-handed, it’s not really having much effect on me, other than making it really uncomfortable to sleep. It’s bursitis, or tendinitis, or some other itis- and it’s annoying... Anyway, my orders from this past weekend were to take it easy and rest the aching shoulder, but I had things to do on my “To Do” list. I managed to get both of them done. They were pretty simple: hang a picture and in- stall a cat door (dog door, whatever) in the door to the laundry room so we could keep the door closed (not propped open like it’s been since we moved in) and Cat could still get to her big, fancy pan that she can’t quite manage to get her butt into some- times. Cutting the hole in the door was no big deal- after all, I have access to CNC machinery and it’s only a couple of thin pieces of plywood. Putting the thing together, though, proved a little more annoying- if not difficult. And, the 47” splinter I got in my finger while sanding the edge of the cut was no small obstacle. Seriously, I’d like to have a talk with the people who came up with this design. You put one half on the door, then you’re supposed to add an inte- rior flange that holds a sleeve. Except the flange didn’t fit on either side. It was about a sixteenth of an inch too small. Anyone have a plastic stretcher? Me neither. I settled for some creative cuts to get the flange to fit, then had to try and figure out how to get the sleeve to actually stay in the groove that was too small for it to actually snap into like the directions showed (yes, un- like the male stereotype, I will read the instructions- sometimes). Good thing we have this stuff at work called Resi-Bond I was able to use to get the pieces to stay together. Of course, then I had to get the pieces on the other side to fit together. Oh yeah, and cut the screws down to a more reasonable length, so they weren’t protruding from the door by an inch and a half. All in all, a project that should have taken about 45 minutes (including 10 or 15 to drive to work and back) end- ed up taking an hour and a half. That’s not the good part, though. I get the door back in place, close myself into the laundry room and start calling for Cat. Like usual, she pretty much ignored me the first few times before coming and sitting outside the door. Then trying to get her paw un- der the door to pull it open, sniffing at the new hole in the door- doing every- thing, in fact, except sticking her head through the door. I gave up, came out, and took her into the room and closed the door. She managed to get out, finally. I went and sat down to vegetate on the couch. I heard Cat go through the door a few times during the rest of the afternoon and evening. When I got up Sunday morning, though, there was a present on the rug in front of the sliding glass door. Some time between when Shelby went to work and I got up 45 minutes later, Cat had decided she didn’t like push- ing open the flap with her nose. Car- umba. This was as bad as when Julie and I had to take the door off the cat pan so Wes wouldn’t get confused about how to get in (Wes, at least, has the excuse that he’s old). So, I took the little flap off and all seems to be well. Now, if I could just get her to figure out how to get in the pan when the top is on it... I’m not prepared to be terribly impressed by the Braves beating the Marlins Monday night. I don’t think it sets any kind of precedent. Even if Atlanta wins three out of the four- or sweeps- the Phillies are playing the Giants this week and the Astros this weekend, both very winnable series for the NL East front runners. If the Braves weren’t out of the race last month, they certainly managed to put themselves on the brink by playing so poorly against Philadelphia last week- end. So what? They’ll count themselves in the wild card chase, you say? Well San Francisco and Colorado, the Wild Card front runners, are playing quite well and the Braves don’t get another shot at them. Barring another push like they put on right after the All Star break, I don’t see the Braves in the playoffs- though I guess we can take solace in their just being in the race. You know, kind of like when the Os- car losers say “it’s an honor just to be nominated...” One more week of meaningless games before the NFL season starts. The Falcons’ final exhibition show is Thursday at Baltimore... Speaking of Baltimore, there was a story in the Gwinnett Daily Post about some local kid who was supposed to be the second coming of Ray Lewis- highlighting this guy’s supposedly bright future in professional football, how 17 NFL teams had been inter- ested in him (though he hadn’t been drafted), how he’d been working out to get ready to prove himself to those same NFL teams by excelling in the UFL (or whatever it is that league is going to be called)- and how the guy was now sitting in a local jail, facing felony burglary charges. I’ve found myself over the years becoming addicted to a little calendar that is in one of my hunt-ing/fishing magazines. It’s in ev-ery issue and takes up less than a page. This particular one is called Dan Barnett’s Feeding Times. The opening line says this; “Fish and game feed in cycles that are deter-mined by the moon’s location rela-tive to the earth.” This calendar will list the best feeding days and times for each month of the year. Now I’m not sure how perfect-ly reliable calendars like this are, but we all know that the moon does effect feeding, movement, and a host of other things. As for me, I keep going back to this lit-tle tool month after month to see when will be my best time to hunt or fish. I do know there are other vari-ables that work in conjunction with these times. Barnett’s book even acknowledges that one of these is local weather extremes. And when it comes to things like the rut, we can pretty much throw any book away. But it is good to know when to stay home and

when it might be a good day to go to the woods. In my years of using this in-formation, I can say that the pro-jected feeding times have been in-conclusive, but the projected best days to hunt have been pretty ac-curate. Don’t you wish there were in-struments like this that we could use in the other parts of our life? Don’t you wish that we could get up each day, look at a calendar, and decide if we are going to go to work or just crawl back under the covers? Well, while there may not be such a calendar, there is Some-one who has promised to guide us in every part of our lives. That Someone is the Lord. In the Old Testament, the only way the Children of Israel knew when to pick up camp and move, was when the cloud that God had provided was no longer over them. They would simply move where it led. They could not go wrong if they would stay when the cloud stayed, move when the cloud moved, and went in the direction the cloud was going. I

wonder how much less trouble we

would get ourselves into if we did the same. Is there a decision that is heading your way? Do you need to know what direction to go? Do you feel like you are under pres-sure to make a move? Don’t do anything until you check your cloud. If it has not moved, don’t you move, no matter how close you think the enemy may be. God has promised that He WILL give you direction and the answer you are needing. To jump ahead may give you temporary relief, but it also may put you a little further away from the place God has pre-pared for you right now.

The Ford Plantation, one of the nation’s top private residential retreats, recently hosted the 29th Annual Georgia-Florida Women’s Team Golf Tournament for the first time in the event’s history. The tournament took place at the community’s acclaimed Pete Dye golf course on August 10 and 11. The two-day event sponsored

by the Georgia State Golf Association brought together the top 12 amateur women golf-ers from both Georgia and Florida to compete in the interstate annual competition. The Nas-sau format was used to score the tournament, with one point awarded to the winner of each nine and to the winner of the overall match. As an added benefit, live scoring was shown on the GSGA website dur-ing the tournament for out-of-town spectators to follow. “The Georgia State Golf Association select-ed The Ford Plantation based on the communi-ty’s remarkable reputa-tion and impressive golf course,” said C. W. Canfield, The Ford Plan-tation’s director of golf. “We’re honored to be selected for such a prestigious tournament and ap-preciate the opportunity to share the course with talented golfers from across the region.” Local spectators and team family members were on hand to watch the contest unfold over the two-day competition. Both

teams were delighted by the spec-tacular green speeds registering between12 1/2 and 13 on the st-imp meter, creating an increased challenge for the golfers. Green speeds at this level are difficult to maintain in the hot summer months, but thanks to The Ford Plantation’s golf course superin-tendent Nelson Caron, who is a Pete Dye protégée, the course ex-ceeded all expectations. In the end, Florida took home the win with 29 1/2 points over Georgia’s 24 1/2 points. This was the second consecutive win for the Sunshine State and first win in Georgia since 1997. This is the first time The Ford Plantation hosted the Georgia-Florida Women’s Team Golf Tour-nament. The Ford Plantation is home to one of only two courses in Georgia designed by Pete Dye and was originally built for private owner Ghaith Pharaon, a Saudi Arabian millionaire, in 1984. Sur-rounded by lush emerald trees and framed by the Ogeechee Riv-er, the course features a Scottish-style back nine, complemented by a Lowcountry-style front nine. The Georgia State Golf Asso-ciation was founded in 1916 and has grown into one of the largest state amateur golf associations in the country, with over 355 mem-ber clubs and 85,000 individual members. With a mission to pro-mote and preserve amateur golf in the state of Georgia, GSGA offers a computerized handicapping ser-vice, course rating and measuring, and conducts a full schedule of statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups.

The Ford Plantation Hosts Successful 29th Annual Georgia-Florida Women’s Team Golf Tournament

By C. Edward Wilson Things won’t get any easier for some teams According to certain area news-papers and media outlets, people are getting tired of hearing so much about Savannah Christian Prepara-tory School football. Brace yourself for some more “ear candy” as the Red Raiders opened the season by shutting out Montgomery County by a whopping 34-0 score. If Donald Chumley’s band of red-clad pirates play up to expecta-tion and take out Emanuel County Institute at home this week, look for the state pollsters to put them right up on top of the Class-A rank-ings and then join the bandwagon for one heckuva great football sea-son for SCPS. Richmond Hill all but begged for an opening season game vic-tory against Bryan County and with some through strong play and a couple of breaks, the Wildcats came away with the win, by a 20-12 count. All the joy and hype, which came with the win, may be spoiled rather quickly this weekend when the Atomsmashers of Johnson High come to town after a resound-ing victory in its opener against Long County, 33-14. The big star of the game was Ricardo Jivens, who intercepted a pass and re-turned it 50-yards and recovered a fumble for another score. If the Jivens name sounds familiar, it’s because Ricardo is one of the sons of Ricky Jivens. The younger Jivens established himself as a top athlete last year as he helped Johnson get into the GHSA state playoffs at his defensive back position. A reality check is in effect for the Groves football team as it will once again be on the road against one of the state’s best high school

football programs. The Rebels travel to Statesboro this Friday to take on the Blue Devils. Groves played Houston County last week and suffered a 34-12 loss. On paper the loss seems bad, but Groves put up a valiant fight before succumb-ing to a more experienced football team from Warner Robins. States-boro on the other hand took out Josey of Augusta, 31-6. Bryan County usually starts the season by losing to Richmond Hill and that didn’t change this past week as the Wildcats (as previ-ously mentioned) lost to its county neighbor, 20-12. The Redskins host Truetlen, a team which defeat-ed Aquinas, 27-7 last week. Things will be tough for Bryan County, but playing at home gives any team an edge and look for the Vikings from Soperton to win, but barely by the skin of their chinny, chin-chin. Effingham County plays in the toughest 2-AAAA region in the state and Appling County comes in from region 2-AA, a formidable opponent every season. The Rebels need this win in more ways than one if it expects to get on track be-fore region play picks up in high gear. Coach Greg Manior’s Mustangs of South Effingham got bush-whacked at West Laurens last week and defeating Jenkins of Savannah could be just what the doctor or-ders. The Warriors played Valdosta on the road and got punched out by a 47-0 score. The Mustangs are still reeling from the debacle of last season when many seniors were kicked off the team for making a not to nice vid-eotape of themselves prior to its game against Effingham County last year. Look for South Effingham to hand the Warriors its second straight loss of the 2009 season.

Ray Lewis. All he needs to do now is kill someone... I was reading the recap of the Braves-Phillies game from Sunday night and just marvelling at all the comments (from fans of both teams) who were bashing each other, and I just had to laugh. When I was growing up, the Braves were a terrible team. They had exactly six winning seasons in Atlanta before 1991. I can only clearly remember two of them (‘81 & ‘82). The sniping be-tween the two sets of fans about which team is historically better, though, just struck me as ridiculous- as were the comments bashing the cities and fans. There was a Phillies’ fan who derided the Braves for moving from Boston to Milwaukee to Atlanta, and proclaiming the Phillies “have always been the Phil-lies and will always be the Phillies.” Well, dude- they may very well re-main the Phillies for the rest of their existence, but they haven’t “always been” the Phillies. They’ve also played as the Blue Jays and the Quakers. (And the Braves haven’t always been the Braves- they’ve also played as the Red

Stockings, the Doves, the Rustlers, the Bees and the Beaneaters.) Another commenter said the Braves would be floundering if they were still an NL West team, and only began to prosper when the leagues were re-aligned. When the Braves started their streak of division titles, the first four came in the NL West. (And everyone in the East would be trailing the Dodg-ers- including the Phils.) The Phillies, in their history, are 9019-10,151 (and those losses are the most of any team) while the Braves are 9836-9868. Since the person who post-ed that Philadelphia was the historical-ly better team also posited that Braves’ fans- being from the South- were the products of inferior school systems, I had to respond that though I may be the product of a Georgia school, even a learning-challenged Southerner like myself can determine which team has the historically better record. Also, the Braves have three World Series cham-pionships (even if only one came in Atlanta), the Phillies two. Three is a larger number than two, isn’t it? All of those numbers mean absolute-ly zip to this season, though, except for the number of wins the teams have now. The Phillies are in first, the Braves in second. Until that changes, Phils fans have bragging rights, and bravo to them for being passionate about their

teams. Philadelphia fans know their sports, and they are behind the Phillies (and Flyers, Eagles and 76ers) wholeheart-edly. Atlanta (Braves, Falcons, Thrash-ers, Hawks) fans- not so much. They tend to be band-wagoners (as opposed to Lyle Waggoner)- though I prefer to consider myself a realist. It’s just that Philadelphia fans lack a little some-thing (let’s recall the tried and true “they booed Santa Claus” incident). I guess winning doesn’t assure class or civility, though... Speaking of Philly fans, Mike D. opined a few weeks ago that, perhaps, the Eagles had signed Michael Vick to make their fans a tad less enthusiastic about calling for Donovan McNabb to be benched. After seeing the recep-tion Vick got in last Thursday’s game against Jacksonville, I don’t think the calls for McNabb to ride the pine will be hampered a bit. Mike also added this week that “...the Chicago Bears will be Super Bowl XLIV champions!!!” Last week’s column generated quite a bit of commentary, including a few re-garding my issues with a certain cable company. Jeffrey says continuing problems with the same company led him to

switch to satellite service. He also added (regarding my NFL picks): “...What the Falcons are missing are loyal fans that don’t flap in the wind, they only hop on the wagon when birds are doing well. Now don’t get me wrong, I like the Falcons and I, like you, like to support local business so I will pull for the Falcons. But my loyalty lies with the NEW YORK GIANTS! GO GI-ANTS !!!” (Your mom will be proud, Jeff.) My buddy Sean added “You had me saying ‘...Right Rob’ when you were talking about the computer and cable company. Not that I have computer or TV problems, but some individu-als simply do not want to be helpful or take responsibility for their actions. I am with you about the polite, but I am not happy with the situation approach. Kill them with kindness, and if that does not work use a oak stick.” (Sean, are you saying I should be meaner when I call? I can do that, you know.) Sean also mentioned he hopes “...Shelby is right about the Falcons. They look pretty good the other night. I like (John) Gruden as an announcer and commentator. I know you will prob-ably beat me up on this but at least the guy knows something about football.” (Actually, I didn’t see the game, so I didn’t hear Gruden’s performance. The

guy was a great coach, though- what I can’t believe is that he’s not on the side-lines somewhere.) Finally, he asks, “Pete Rose in or out (of baseball) for good? So, Pete put a dollar on a team or two. Still one heck of a ball player and numbers not enhanced by anything but ‘Flintstone Vitamins’.” Ah, Pete Rose. Much like Barry Bonds, Rafael Palmiero and Mark McGwire, Pete is just a great, big liar (Hey! A rhyme!). I still think the issue isn’t Pete’s betting. People are willing to forgive. It’s that Rose continues to in-sist that he didn’t bet on games (despite the evidence to the contrary). That and he comes across- er- quite poorly in in-terviews. And he still has that terrible “Moe Howard” haircut... And finally, happy birthday Mat-thew- celebrating Saturday...

That’s it for this week. I’ll be back next time with more news, notes, and rumors from the sports world. As al-ways, send your questions, praises, or gripes to [email protected], or via snail mail to: Bean Spouts c/o Spirit Newspapers P.O. Box 33 Pooler, GA 31322. God, bless America.

BY AL CARRELL AND KELLY CARRELL

Over time, the threshold un-der an entry door can become worn or damaged. The energy loss can be extreme, and who wants bugs in their home? Well, these parts can be replaced and, with a few tools and courage, it isn’t that hard to do. Here’s how to go about it. Some thresholds are installed under the door stop. If this is the case with yours, you can pry the stop up and remove the screws or nails to get the threshold out. Be careful as you do this so that you don’t split the wood. You will need to put it back in place when

you are finished making your re-pair. Another option is to remove the screws or nails and slide the threshold out from under the stops. Sometimes you can do this, but sometimes flooring materials can make this impossible. If this can’t be done easily, you can use a saw to cut through the threshold in the center. After all, it’s going to be thrown away any-way. Once it’s in two pieces, it eas-ily can be pried up and moved out of the way. Make sure the surface under the threshold is clear of nails and is clean. If the door stops were not un-dercut, do so to accommodate the

new threshold. Your new threshold may need to be trimmed to fit your door opening. This usually can be done with a hacksaw. Drill pilot holes through the new threshold, if it doesn’t have any, and on down into the floor. Countersink the screws for a smooth fit. Add caulk to the edg-es for a good seal against air and pests. Make sure your door fits tight-ly. Add a door sweep to the door if you want to add another layer of security. Good job!

* * *Q: My air conditioner is leaking out the side of my house. It seems to be working fine and cooling OK, but I’m concerned about this dripping. It just started this year and has never happened before. What is going on? -- K.L.

A: It’s hard to say with just these few details, but it sounds like your condensation drain is clogged and the backup drain is being used to get rid of the excess moisture from your air conditioner. You need to correct the problem before the leak ends up causing damage to the house. See if this is the case by exposing the condensation pan under the AC. See if by pouring a little bleach into the pan, it will clear the drain. If not, try to see if you can work a wire around the drain to unclog it.

* * *If you are trying to be “green” -- and who isn’t, these days -- you might be considering starting a compost pile. This is so easy to do, and once you know the ba-sics, you can have a steady sup-ply of FREE plant food and mulch for your yard year-round. It doesn’t cost much and is a great way to get rid of vegetable waste from your home as well as many other items destined for the gar-bage can. Learn how to build and manage your own compost pile with our instructions. Send your request for “A Heap About Compost,”along with a $1 check or money order ($2 in Canada -- no coins, please) and a self-addressed, stamped envelope, to The Super Handyman here at the newspaper, and we’ll get our reci-pe to you as soon as we can.

* * *A SUPER HINT -- To make new, shiny cabinet and door hardware look older, try putting a little brown shoe polish on it to age it. Rub it into the finish, and take off the excess. It will give your new hardware an antique look.

* * *Dear Al: We have painted the cab-inets in the kitchen and replaced

the countertops. Now my wife is wanting some lights underneath the upper cabinets. I started pric-ing them and looked at the way they were installed, and was a little worried about being able to put them in. I ended up stapling under the cabinets some small “twinkle lights” that have an on/off switch. They look fine, and

nobody has figured out that they are inexpensive Christmas lights! -- B.D.

Studebaker celebrated its Cen-tennial in 1952, having begun in South Bend, Ind., in 1852, building wheelbarrows, wagons and bug-gies. Studebaker’s first production automobile, in 1902, was an elec-tric vehicle designed by none other than the great inventor Thomas Edison! Electric Studebakers were built until 1912, but meanwhile, Studebaker, for 1904, offered a Studebaker-Garford gasoline-pow-ered auto, with an eight-horsepow-er, double opposed horizontal en-gine. Studebaker’s affiliated makes, before the early teens, were Gar-ford, Flanders and E-M-F. But after 1912, Studebaker continued on alone. For 1914, Studebaker offered the FB tour and the EB six. Left-hand drive was now standard on Studebakers, with gearshift and emergency-brake levers at the cen-ter. Gas-tank location was changed from under the front seat to inside the streamlined and enlarged cowl section. For the first time, the four-cyl-

inder model had an electric start-er and electric lights as standard equipment -- a great leap forward. The 1914 six was a much larger, longer and costlier car, on a 121.3-inch wheelbase. The six-cylinder version of the Landau-Roadster cost $600 more than the four-cyl-inder one seen here. Studebaker maintained facilities and offices in South Bend and also in Detroit in 1914. Studebaker enjoyed many suc-cessful decades, but in 1964 made its final cars in South Bend, Ind., and moved into its Canadian facto-ry until 1966, when the last Stude-bakers appeared. But Studebaker has many loyal fans, and a couple of worldwide clubs.

1914 STUDEBAKER 4A JAUNTY LITTLE CAR, GREATLY IMPROVED FROM THE ‘13 MODELS

BY TOM AND RAY MAGLIOZZI

Dear Tom and Ray: My rotten Dodge Dakota (2007) came with a PLASTIC front bumper. (I knew body panels were being made of that flimsy sub-stance, but was horrified to find out that so were bumpers.) Now, this is a “work vehicle,” which can be expected to bump into or push things around. But just rolling to a stop in a parking lot and barely touching a wooden post, I heard a sickening “cracking” sound. Drat!

I asked our Chrysler dealership if Dodge or Mopar offered an option-al steel bumper (they don’t). So, then I checked a local off-road parts house. The best it could come up with was a “Bull Bar,” which is even uglier than one of you guys (no of-fense). Do you know of anyone who offers a reasonably close to stock, steel front bumper? -- Dave

RAY: We don’t.

TOM: But you DO have a steel front bumper, Dave. The plastic is

just the bumper cover; it’s there to improve the vehicle’s aerodynam-ics, and therefore its mileage.

RAY: Underneath that piece of plas-tic you cracked is a piece of ugly steel that does what it’s supposed to do, structurally, to protect the truck.

TOM: Unfortunately, those plastic bumper covers are easy to break and expensive to fix -- as I found out recently when I tried to test the turning radius of a brand-new Acura in an underground parking garage.

RAY: Needless to say, the turning radius was greater than zero, and my brother implemented yet an-other unplanned exterior redesign.

TOM: Anyway, there were years in which the Dakota came with metal bumpers, so you can check with your local auto-recycling facility (aka junkyard) and ask if the bum-per from another year will fit your truck. They’ve got all that informa-tion on computer.

RAY: If you can’t find one, then I think you need to go custom. Find a metal fabricator or a custom body shop in your area, and ask it to make you something that will sit in front of the plastic cover, but will attach to the steel bumper it-self. You can go chrome, you can go cross-hatched, you can have your name etched into it if you like. It’ll be like a gigantic belt buckle for your Dakota.

TOM: Or, here’s an idea: You can have it fitted with raised letters: Y-R-R-O-S. That way, when you bang into someone else’s plastic bumper cover in a parking lot, you’ll punc-ture a message right into the bum-per that says “Sorry.”

* * *Bumps and potholes do more than merely annoy drivers. Find out what, and how you can ease the pain, by ordering Tom and Ray’s pamphlet “Ten Ways You May Be Ruining Your Car Without Even Knowing It!” Send $4.75 (check or money order) to Ruin, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.
