Steve Exley’s major league base-ball aspirations were done in by a sore shoulder, but he’s taken his love and knowledge of the game and found success as a high school baseball coach.
So much success, in fact, that he could develop a sore shoulder(s) of a different kind – one that comes from hoisting state championship trophies.
The 43-year-old Rincon resi-dent is the baseball coach and athletic director at Abundant Life Academy, a Christian school aver-aging around 200 students and lo-cated in Hardeeville, SC.
To say the team has been suc-cessful during Exley’s 18 years as coach is the equivalent of calling Albert Pujols a good hitter.
Competing in the 1-A Division of the South Carolina Association of Christian Schools, Abundant Life has a 328-35-1 record un-der Exley. In its most recent cam-paign, the team had a 23-1 record and won its sixth consecutive state championship and 12th overall. It’s ranked No. 1 in the nation among several hundred Division 4 Christian schools.
Exley describes his playing ap-proach as “old school.” He de!nes that as going for the big innings, focusing on pitching and defense
and playing aggressively. “We play hard-nosed ball,” says the Savan-nah native. “We steal bases, run the bases aggressively and put pressure on the other teams.”
Supplying much of that pres-sure the past three years has been Jon Herrington, the High School Sports Report’s !rst player of the year among Christian schools. As leadoff hitter this past season, the senior left!elder/shortstop batted .580 and stole 24 of 25 bases.
“Jon’s the sparkplug that made our offense go,” Exley says. “He scored the most runs for us over the past three seasons.”
Two other Abundant Life se-niors had outstanding seasons for the Cougars. Caleb Smith batted .581 with a team-high six home runs, 48 RBIs and 44 runs scored. Catcher/pitcher Cam Thomas bat-ted a team-high .660 and smacked !ve home runs and scored 38 runs.
Abundant Life hadn’t won a game when Exley took over as coach in 1993. In his !rst year, it went 15-5 and !nished runner-up in the state championship game. The following season, Abundant Life won the title, the !rst of four consecutive championships.
Exley says the !rst group of players he coached was really hun-gry to win and established a tradi-tion that serves as motivation for
subsequent teams. “No one wants to be the team to live the tradition down,” Exley explains. “They want to be the team to continue the tra-dition.”
For Exley, baseball is a family tradition as well.
His grandfather and father played, and the latter was espe-cially instrumental in steering Ex-ley toward baseball. “His passion and love of the game rubbed off on

me,” notes Exley, who played for his father on various youth teams.”
Exley tried some other sports but quickly settled on baseball. He says he liked the dual aspects of the game. “You have the team concept and the pitcher-hitter confronta-tion,” he explains. “You have the chance to excel as the member of a team and as an individual. It’s like two games in one.”
Exley played third base and pitched at Calvary and performed well enough to attract a number of college scholarship offers. He chose South Georgia College, lo-cated near Waycross. He says he liked the baseball program, cam-pus and facilities along with the opportunity to play near where his grandfather grew up.
Exley was one of 129 players trying out for 25 positions in his freshman year. He relied on hard work, desire and the experience of competing against top players in American Legion ball to make the team. “American Legion was a great preparation for college,” Ex-ley says.
Exley proved he belonged on the team, batting .310 during his freshman year and pitching out of the bullpen. He featured a 91-92 mph. fastball.
Yet it was his pitching that would ultimately shorten his base-ball career.
Playing against Georgia Tech on a cold day in a fall league game, Exley didn’t have time to warm up
coming out of the bullpen and hurt his shoulder. The following year, the shoulder injury limited Ex-ley’s pitching but he still hit .369 at third base and earned Academic All-America honors.
Exley’s performance earned him a full scholarship offer from Berry College, which he accepted. Before he could resume his college career, however, the Pittsburgh Pirates came along and made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. Exley signed as an undrafted free agent in 1987 and reported to the Pirates’ Gulf Coast League team in Bra-denton, Fla. All the hard work had paid off.
“I gave up my senior prom be-cause of baseball,” Exley says. “I made a lot of sacri!ces and worked hard but it was all validated when I signed with the Pirates. It was a dream come true.”

The dream was quickly replaced by the reality that Exley had never fully recovered from the shoulder injury he suffered during his fresh-man year in college. Playing third base, he noticed his throws across the diamond became more painful. A subsequent diagnosis revealed a torn rotator cuff, with two tears in his shoulder. “It was a pretty dev-astating injury,” Exley says. At the time, he adds, with the treatment options not as advanced as nowa-days, the chances of recovering from such an injury were practi-cally zero.
On a minor league team where, on the average, perhaps one play-er would make it to the majors, the competition was intense. The slightest weakness would be ex-ploited by opposing teams, and that included a third baseman with a sore shoulder. After six months in the minors, Exley was released by the Pirates. The dream had ended.
Exley re"ects on his brief minor league career. Range-wise, he says, he felt he could hold his own with any third baseman. He adds that he also could swing the bat and, if given a chance, could have moved up through the minors and possi-bly all the way to the big leagues.
“I’m not sure how far I could have gone,” says Exley, noting that he missed the camaraderie of the team. “All the players have talent. It comes down to work ethic. I would have liked to see how far I could have gone.”
Instead, Exley was a former ballplayer in search of a job. He worked for a labor company for several years before moving on to Aramark for a year. He satis!ed his baseball joneses by playing com-petitive slow-pitch softball.
Exley returned to baseball through a family connection; his wife’s uncle, the founder of Abun-dant Life Academy, was looking for a baseball coach and offered Exley the job. Exley, who had helped coach a competitive recreation team with his father while in col-lege, gladly accepted. His second career in baseball had begun.
Coming full circle, Exley brought on his father, Andy, as as-sistant coach, a position the elder Exley still holds.
“How many sons have the op-portunity to work side by side with their father,” Exley says. “It’s really, really special, to share the victories and defeats. My father’s been with me every step of the way. He used to work with the railroad, and he would drive to my games in college and not get home until 1 or 2 in the morning and then get up at 5:30. This is a way of giving back.”
Exley says the Good Lord has been very kind and has always met his needs. As to the challenge of coaching elsewhere, perhaps at a larger school, he says he hasn’t got-ten the “message” to move on.
The victories and state cham-pionships are gratifying, but Exley says he derives his greatest satis-faction from something not found in the box score.
“We try to use baseball to strengthen values for a successful life,” Exley explains. “We try and win and lose with character and class. The biggest compliment I can receive is how they (his play-ers) conduct themselves on the
!eld and treat opponents.”Caleb Smith pitched and
played shortstop at Abundant Life for three years before graduating this spring. He’s accepted a full academic scholarship to USC and plans on trying out for the baseball team as a walk-on.
Smith’s father, Vince, describes his son’s three years under Exley as a “wonderful experience.” He adds that Exley’s impact on his players isn’t limited to balls and strikes.
“Coach Exley has great knowl-edge and passion for the game,” Vince says, “but he goes beyond that and emphasizes the student-athlete and sportsmanship. He teaches character and life skills along with baseball. Steve and his father have been a major in"uence on my son in a positive way.”

I do much of my work today on a computer. I’m thankful that I took a typing class when I was a senior in high school. And no, the typewriter was not manual, for all of you smart-alecs. By the end of the year, I was typing an outstand-ing twenty-four words per min-ute. Now, I can already tell that some of you are wondering what the heck is a smart alec? And no doubt the same bunch has no clue what a typewriter is. If this is the case, I can only say I really feel old and since its time for my Geritol, I’ll just let you go online for defi-nitions and descriptions. Yeah, I know… What’s Geritol? I do remember my first com-puter – a Commodore 64. And my first laptop was a Tandy. I think it weighed about 64 pounds and was slower than my ability to type. This of course was before Al Gore dis-covered the internet, so I spent my time on word processing and set-ting up databases. Soon my ability to type increased and now I can safely say I can type at least twenty-five words per minute. You see… they changed the words.
It has always seemed that when I finally “got it,” they decided what I “got” was outdated. And then there’s what’s “new and improved.” My hunting closet is full of new and improved things – most of which are just new and more ex-pensive than the last item that was new and improved. Pretty soon someone will come up with the “new and unimprovable.” I’m hop-ing that will be my final purchase. When I think about all of these changes, my mind goes in two di-rections. First of all, it moves to-ward the future and what it might hold when it comes to technology. Will I be able to replace my car with a hovercraft and can I please just hand pick the ten television channels I want to watch and buy them, instead of having to buy 600 in order to get that same ten? Pleeeese. What my mind also goes to is the comfort in knowing there is an unchangeable, unmovable, and an unimprovable foundation that is solid. It is the truths found in the scriptures. And even though there will be new discoveries, the Lord
will never change and neither will His plan for me or for you. When I picture this, I see an island that I can safely get on after I have ridden the waves of change at the end of each day. I like riding those waves but it would be pretty scary if I had to live on them.
