(Seriously- could it have gotten worse than that Michael Strahan sitcom? Of course, there was “The War at Home”, “Back to You” and “King of the Hill”- which was funny for all of one season, yet somehow lasted something like ten.) Anyway, I had to scratch my head when I saw they were still show- ing Daytona 500 coverage. “Don’t these guys go something like 175 miles an hour?” I wondered to my- self. “They can’t still be going six hours later.” Oh, I was wrong- seems they’d park the cars for a while, mid-race, to repair a pothole on the track. I had to laugh. Those guys need to drive the surface streets of Atlanta (or Savannah, even) sometime. We’ll show them what a pothole looks like. Of course, we’re not go- ing 175- but it’s not for lack of ef- fort… Spring training hasn’t even offi- cially started (pitchers and catchers report Friday) and there’s already bad news for the Braves. Ace righty Jair Jurrjens will be seeing doctors ahead of workouts to determine why he’s having discomfort in his pitching shoulder. Jurrjens is scheduled to undergo an MRI in Atlanta at some point this week after having soreness while throwing at the club’s Spring Training headquarters last week. Jurrjens admitted to fatigue af- ter his rookie season with the club when he tossed 188 1/3 innings in 2008 after never having thrown more than 143 1/3 innings in a professional season before that, but completed 215 innings last season with no problems after using some of the conditioning tips from John Smoltz. Jurrjens allowed two earned runs or less in 26 of 34 starts and posted a 0.97 ERA in his final five starts covering 37 innings… Last week, I relayed my tale of how my laptop had shipped from China and how I was still wait- ing on a package from Illinois. Wouldn’t you know it? They both got her on the same day. That’s right- a package made it to from the other side of the freaking globe quicker than one that came from just one time zone away. And my new laptop is awesome. I was almost as happy as Navin R. Johnson when the new phone books came in… A male high school cheerleader in Washington says school officials discriminated against him when they refused to let him perform the same routines as the girls. The student claims he was told at the start of the school year that he would be able to participate in dance routines and other activities performed by the female cheerlead- ers- but was later pressured into wearing the school’s mascot uni- form, and then barred from mov- ing his legs or hips while cheering. The boy’s mother sent letters to state officials, the American Civil Liberties Union and other groups that eventually pressured the school into giving her son an offi- cial cheer uniform and pompoms, but she wasn‘t satisfied- and wants further measures taken, including seminars against discrimination and reprimands for school officials. “I think the combination of a biracial, mentally challenged gay ___________________________________ Continued on page B3 • It’s time for your little ones to register to be a part of “The Great America’s Past Time.” Youth ages 3 - 12 can register for baseball/soft- ball and T-ball at City Hall in Down- town Port Wentworth. By C. Edward Wilson Ready or not, he’s voted best player Earlier this week, Robert W. Groves High’s senior forward, Keenan Ready was selected the Region 3-AAAAA’s Player of the Year in voting by region coaches. The 6-foot-5 inch forward/ swing-man headlines a team of seniors, which could possibly win the Georgia High School Association’s 2010 state basketball title. Joining Ready on the first team is 6-foot-8 inch forward Brandon Mobley. Ready has not made a decision

as to what college he will be head-ing to next season, but Mobley travelled to the University of Mis-souri over the weekend for an of-ficial recruiting visit. Other teams on his radar are the University of Tennessee and Indiana University. Johnson High basketball coach Marty Holder was named the coach of the year in the region. Other first team selections were Jareal Smith and Angelo Davis of Johnson, Steve White of Windsor Forest and Steven Mur-phy of Camden County. Bradwell Institute head coach Faye Baker was named coach of the year, and Tiger center Seandre Lee was picked the player of the year. Joining Lee on the first team was guard Camille Jackson. Other first team selections were: Shandalyn Mitchell, John-son; Bionca Washington, Windsor Forest; Amber Curtis, Beach and Alexus Parker, Savannah High.

RAY: I don’t think there’s any-thing more to worry about, Mary.If they were able to align the frontwheels, that means the parts are allworkingastheyshouldbe. TOM: Here’s what happened:There are certain “ramp lifts” thathavetwotracksthatyoudrivethecaronto.Myguessisthatsomekidwhowastryingtosendatextmessageatthe same time drove your car ontotheliftcrooked, andoneofthefrontwheels dropped off the side. SHOULD DRIVER INVESTIGATE DEALER MISHAP FURTHER?

You never heard of a car called the “Wanderer”? Well, it’s not sur-prising, because this was a Ger-man car not sold in the U.S., and was discontinued when World War II began in 1939. This ‘36 (‘37 similar) Wanderer was a car of high quality, but never popular like the Mercedes-Benz, BMW or, of course, the see-it-everywhere post-war Volkswagens. Because of the ravages of WWII, many Wan-derers and other rare European cars were blown to bits in air raids, or were scrapped for their needed steel. However, in 1970, a gentle-man in Australia (not Austria!) had a mint-condition 1924 Wanderer touring car (phaeton) with only 69 actual miles on it, and offered to sell it for offers above $6,500. It had been in storage in Australia since 1925. When I attended Lakeview El-ementary School in Oakland, Ca-lif., during World War II, a new kid, Harry Weinberg, arrived to join our third-grade class. His family had fled from Germany to escape the mass murder of Jews the Nazis were perpetrating, and Harry had brought with him a fascinating little German wind-up toy convert-ible that looked somewhat like this ‘36 Wanderer. The elaborate toy had a tiny gearshift lever that you could move with your finger to change speeds. I’d never seen such a detailed toy car as this, be-ing used to the 10-cent Tootsietoys that most kids bought. Harry’s car was the hit of “show and tell” that day.

The producers of Wanderer began as bicycle manufacturers, then motorcycles, and then cars (first known as Wandermobil).

there, but it doesn’t. The same woman called back later that day to report that someone had thrown a small pile of dirt at her front door, and an empty beer can into her yard. She’s convinced her neighbor was trying to get back at her for calling the Police.

Bryan County Sheriff’s Department• A Richmond Hill woman filed a report after finding that someone in Ohio had withdrawn $500 from her account with her credit card number.• Deputies were alerted at 1:30am that a white Ford pickup had just been stolen from a Hwy 280 con-venience store. The truck was being followed by a maroon car driven by an accomplice. A Depu-ty was just a mile away when the

alert went out. He quickly spotted the truck coming towards him and turned around to pursue it. The driver refused to stop for the Dep-uty’s lights, accelerating to over 100mph. The driver then attempt-ed to turn east on I-16, but was going to fast to make the turn. He lost control of the truck, careened down the embankment and struck several trees. The driver contin-ued to try and escape, driving the truck through the grassy area un-til he got it stuck. The man then exited the truck and fled on foot, scampering to the top of the exit ramp to Hwy 280 to meet with his friend in the maroon Oldsmobile. That car took off at a high rate of speed. The Deputies pursued them and made a felony traffic stop near the Effingham line on Hwy 80 with weapons drawn. The men were returned to the conve-nience store and positively identi-fied by witnesses. The truck thief told Deputies he saw the keys in the ignition and just took the op-portunity to steal the truck. His accomplice admitted driving away from the store with his lights off to help his friend escape. Both were taken to jail. (Real justice would be

turning them over to the truck’s owner!)• Just after 5am, a Deputy was dispatched to Cypress Bay Loop Road where he found a man laying in the roadway, drunk and bleed-ing from the face. He tried finding out what had happened, but the man was too drunk to answer any questions.• Just after 8:30pm, a Deputy was eastbound on Hwy 204 and watch-ing the Ford Taurus in front of him weaving in the roadway and oc-cassionally running off the road. Just before making a traffic stop, the driver signalled to make a left hand turn onto Tony Branch Road. However, the driver completely missed the road, and ended up turning into a dirt field. The Dep-uty asked the man for his license, and the man admitted it was sus-pended. The license plate on the Taurus returned to a Chrysler Se-bring. The man was taken to jail for DUI, driving while suspended, and about a dozen other charges.• Deputies are looking for a Rich-mond Hill woman who wrote a bad check to pay for the decal for her 2008 Dodge Durango.
