Vendor Presentations and Reception: Infrared Applications: ThermoSense XXXVIII12:15 to 4:45 pm • Location: Conv. Ctr. Room 318Session Chairs: Andres E. Rozlosnik, SI Termografía Infrarroja (Argentina); Sheng-Jen (Tony) Hsieh, Texas A&M Univ. (USA)

The Infrared Applications: ThermoSense XXXVIII Vendor Session and Reception will be held on Monday afternoon, 18 April, 2016 as part of SPIE Defense + Commercial Sensing 2016 in Baltimore. The session will feature brief presentations from hardware and software vendors whose product lines impact thermal imaging applications.

Unlike the technical sessions, there are no “commercial content” restric-tions in these presentations. This event allows vendors to showcase new products on display at this year’s exhibit, and provides attendees with an advance glimpse of “what’s new” in thermal imaging applications.

All exhibitors are eligible to present.

The Vendor Session was started twelve years ago and has been a popular, well-attended success. It allows the busy technical conference attendees to better prioritize their time when visiting the exhibits. It also provides a relaxed atmosphere for informal conversations between vendors and conference attendees. The session begins with 10-15 minute presentations and is followed by a reception and mixer with snacks and soft drinks.

Smarter Autonomous Vehicles Integrating mm-Wave Radars and Solid-State LiDAR11:15 am to 12:00 pm • Location: Industry Stage, Exhibition HallSPONSORED BY

Imec will describe its latest work in mm-wave radar solutions and current developments towards LiDAR systems. It is believed that these sensors, implementing solid-state scanning, would be more reliable and cost-effec-tive than similar mechanical options. Highly automated driving requiring more than 8 radars per vehicle leads to a forecast of exponential growth of radar chips for the years to come. Imec’s CMOS-based 79GHz radar solution allows for lower cost, lower power consumption and more compact radars, versus commercially available radars using a SiGe BiCMOS technology. The imec 79GHz Phase Modulated Continuous Wave (PMCW) radar achieves a range resolution of 7.5cm with an angular resolution of 1 degree. Our latest work on a 140GHz radar technology allows for higher resolutions and even more compact radars due to antenna-on-chip, ideally suited for indoor applications.

The distributed fiber optic sensor market stood at $585 mil-lion in 2013 and was projected to be $1.5 billion in 2018 with 70% of that associated with the oil and gas market segments.

In this presentation, David Krohn of Light Wave Venture LLC and author of “Fiber Optic Sensors: Fundamentals and Applications” (SPIE volume PM247) will provide an overview of the fiber sensing market and address the negative impact on it of the sudden and unexpected drop in global oil prices. The long-term picture is still optimistic, Krohn says, but a short-term contraction is likely.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Target Recognition and Adaption in Contested Environments (TRACE)12:30 to 2:00 pm • Location: Industry Stage, Exhibition Hall Many SAR Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) algorithms require im-practically large labeled training sets to achieve accurate recognition performance. Adapting these algorithms for operation in contested envi-ronments can be a significant challenge because of the limited availability of high-quality training data. Additionally, traditional template-based algorithms can have large run-time memory or storage requirement that make them impractical for real-time embedded applications.

The TRACE session explores new algorithm and processing architectures to address these issues, including:

• New ATR approaches for SAR

• Application of model-based and transfer-learning based methods to achieve rapid learning with limited training data

• Experiment design and performance prediction with limited training data

• New algorithm and hardware architectures for low-power, real-time ATR on mobile processors
