MAGINE yourself taking a simulated space You're standing in front
of a part-task trainer which consists of a spacecraft cabin fitted
with a three-axis
control, an instructor's console, a bank of computers, and a visual
display that reproduces the earth as seen from space. Climb into
the cabin and sink back in the astronaut's
reclining chair. Feel a bit hemmed in? That array of contro!
panels, with hun-
and warning lights, seems uncomfortably close to your face. Never
mind, you'll soon get used to it. Let your hands fall naturally to
each side. On the left is the abort handle or “chicken switch”. It
fires the escape tower to hurl your spacecratt clear if anything
‘goes wrong on the launch pad. On the right is the three-axis
control (pitch, yaw and roll) which will stabilise and orient your
craft in outer space.
Your trainer-capsule is poised ‘ona steel ball and cushioned by a
layer of compressed air. The slightest movement you make will tlt
it over or send it spinning round. Tho throe-axis control
oper-
ates compressed-air jets that will turn your craft in any direc-
tion. Push the control bar for- ward and the capsule will pitch
(nod up and down). Twist the control and you'll yaw (swing from
side to side). Move it left fr right and you'll turn over In a slow
roll.
Careful with those compres- sed-air jets, Use them in short

bursts only, oF you'll spin out of control. Try to grasp the mean-
ing of all those coloured lights ‘on the control panel. But keep a
wary eye on the earth as well. ‘You do this by fleeting glances
through a window, much the same as a driver does when he glances
into his rear view mirror. What you really sees a revolving map,
but it looks as if the world is rushing by at five miles a
second, Now it's time for re-entry—
fire your rockets. Press the but- ton on your left and brace your-
solf for the shock. As the retros fire you feel as if some powerful
force is pushing you right through your seat. Thatwas only 8g.
During re-entry you'll have to stand up to 16g.
Gradually the pressures and the shaking and the shuddering will
stop. Signal to the instructor and he'll switch off the power.
You've made a good start,
Next week: practice a dezvous in space with the docking
trainer.
