Strategy One- Sounding Out • The most common spelling

strategy is to actually sound out every single sound in the word.

Strategy Two- Syllabification• Another way to work out spelling

is to break the work down into the various syllables

• El-e-phant• Sat-is-fied• Un-der-stand• Yes-ter-day

Strategy Three-Words Within Words

• Often we can remember tricky words or tricky phonemes by remembering that there is a word within that word.

• separate • reaction• business• permanent• disappearance• conscience• concentration

Strategy Four- Compound Words

• With some words you can remember how to spell them by working out they are compound words (originally made up of two or more words which have become one )

• meanwhile• however• furthermore• outside

Strategy 5 – Using an Mnemonic

• Sometime you can learn a word by creating a mnemonic for that word

• Eg: Every Naughty Old Unlucky Ghost Haunts

• Seven Elephant’s Noses Tangle Easily Near Cakes Eventually
