As the hirer, please read the following key safety points beforeoperating any equipment:

Risk Assessment

There is a duty on employers under current Health & Safetylegislation to adopt best practice measures to reduce risk andensure the Health & Safety of themselves, co-workers and the public.

Testing

In line with the Health & Safety Executive requirements, submersible pumps will have to be checked for earthconductivity and resistance on a 90-day cycle. This may resultin Speedy requiring access to the equipment whilst on hire.

Special Safety Devices

Do not disable or adjust any safety or protective device fitted tothe pump or increase any governed speed or workingpressures in the pump.

Exhaust Gases

Do not operate equipment in confined spaces without goodventilation. Breathing exhaust gases is dangerous and couldpotentially kill.

Sparks & Fire

Explosions and fire can be caused by sparks from exhaust orelectrical systems. Do not use machines in a closed areawhere there is flammable material, vapour or dust.

Hot Surfaces

Whilst the pump is in normal operation do not touch any ofthe engine components including the exhaust, pump ends, valves and tanks. Surfaces get extremely hot and can burn.

Super-silent pumps

Hydraulic Fluid

To check for hydraulic fluid leaks hold a piece of cardboardclose to suspected leaks and then inspect for fluid. Do not usebare hands – fine jets of hydraulic fluid at high pressure canpenetrate the skin. Always wear eye protection. If fluid comesinto contact with eyes or flesh seek medical help immediately.

Oil

Do not handle used engine oil more than necessary as itcontains harmful contaminants which can cause skin cancer.Always use barrier cream or wear gloves to prevent skincontact. Avoid contact with the mouth.

Damaged Hoses & Cables

Damaged hoses and cables can cause fatal accidents. Inspectregularly for:

• Damaged end fittings / loose glands

• Chafed outer covers or exposed wire armour

• Ballooned outer covers

• Kinked or crushed hoses

• Embedded armouring in outer covers

Electrical Control Equipment

Earth leakage protective devices and motor overloads shouldonly be adjusted by a competent person.

Flow Estimates

Flow meters are available for this purpose. In addition the following simple tests can be used. The pipe should be straight, at least1.5m (5ft) from the nearest elbow, bend or valve. The rate of flow can be estimated from the distance 'X' or 'Y'. For larger pipesthe flow is proportioned to pipe diameter squared (full pipe only).

• Before carrying out any maintenance ensure battery isolatorswitch is in off position and key is removed.

• Rotating machinery – Never insert anything into suction tubewhilst pump set is running.

• Check that all guards are secure and never operate the pumpwith missing or defective guards.

• Position the exhaust so that it is unlikely to cause a hazard tohealth and be aware of hot exhaust pipes.

• Before starting the engine the operator must familiarise himselfon how to stop it.

• Never use in a confined space – allow adequate ventilation forcooling and removal of engine exhaust fumes.

• Check that the pump and its performance is suitable for theapplication with regards to volume to be pumped, nature ofmaterial to be pumped and location of its destination.

• When checking coolant level care must be taken as the system ispressurised. Allow engine to cool before checking.

• When handling fuel, lubricating oil and battery electrolyte takenecessary precautions to protect skin and eyes.

Daily Checks

It is the hirers responsibility to carry out these checks

• Check engine oil level. Replenish using SAE 15/W40 orequivalent as necessary.

• Check fuel level. Replenish using clean: water free diesel.

• Check coolant level. Replenish using a 50/50 anti-freeze/watermixture as necessary.

• Check air filter. In dusty conditions clean primary filters regularly.

• Visually check drive belts – Do not remove guards.

• Check all meters and gauges are functional. Check for leaks.Check the engine oil pressure and temperature are withinacceptable limits.

• Check that the pump is not due to be serviced. See “NEXTSERVICE DUE” label. If pump is due to be serviced, or anydefects found, report to Speedy Pumps Ltd.

Operations

• Before starting the unit the operator must familiarise themselveson how to Stop the unit.

• Before starting the pump check fuel level, lubrication oil level, coolant level (do not remove the radiator cap when engine ishot). Replenish as necessary.

• Jack Legs should be set and positioned prior to pumping.

• If pump on wheeled undercarriage make sure hand brake isapplied when not connected to a vehicle.

• Ensure correct Strainer & Hose safety bond is fitted beforedropping hose in the water and before starting.

• Check security of all hoses.

• After starting pump set, check delivery hose for leaks and ensureany material being pumped is being discharged where intended.

• Check condition and security of hoses as leaks may cause banksto be undermined.

• Check the control panel readings. Indicate correctly within safeparameters. (Refer to operator manual for tolerances)

• Once the pump has started check for any abnormal noise orvibration. Stop unit immediately and report to Speedy Pumpsshould any be discovered.

• Do not lift the machine by any means, other than themanufacturers lifting eye or the fork lift pockets.

Fault Finding

• Engine does not crank – Check battery voltage. Check keyswitch operation. Check that no fault lamps are illuminated.

• The engine cranks but does not start – Check bothemergency stop buttons on the canopy exterior are released.

• Engine cranks but does not fire – Check fuel level. Checkemergency stop buttons are out.

• Engine stops due to high temperature – Check engine wasnot overloaded. Check radiator is not obstructed.

• Engine stops due to low oil pressure – Call Speedy PumpsLtd. Do not attempt to re-start the pump.

• Pump not pumping – Remove Suction Hose – Block offsuction tube with appropriate fitting. If vacuum gauge rises, pump is OK, check hoses.

• If gauge fails to rise:

a) Check outlet Non Return Valve is closed. (A draft from thedelivery fitting would indicate otherwise)

b) Valve OK – Check priming fluid level and top-up with cleanwater or antifreeze mixture.

c) Any other symptoms please contact Speedy Pumps Ltd.

• Black engine smoke/loss of power/speed – Check air filters areclean. Check fuel filters and fuel level. Check that the pump isnot being overloaded.

• Engine will not start after running out of fuel and refuelling –Fuel system requires bleeding.

THINGS TO DO / NOT TO DO

61TROUBLE SHOOTING

Newest fleet of pumps in the industry

Things NOT to do:

• Pump volatile or corrosive liquids

• Have inexperienced personnel operate pump

• Tamper with engine governor

• Operate pump with pump housing discharge outlet closed –pump and engine overheating will occur

• Operate pump with suction inlet obstructed – internal damagemay occur due to cavitation

• Use collapsible hose on suction side of pump

• Operate pump with suction hose buried in sand or mud, suspend strainer if possible

• Operate pump without a strainer

• Use a smaller than recommended suction hose

• Any increase in heat would require investigation to suction anddelivery lines

Things to do for efficient pumping:

• Locate pump as close as possible to liquid - keep suction lift toa minimum

• Check for proper hoses, reinforced on the suction side andflexible on the discharge side

• Have tight connection on suction side of pump with goodcoupling (s)

• Use strainer recommended by manufacturer

• Secure pump before operation

• Provide area for adequate ventilation of exhaust

• Pump liquids for which the pump was designed

• Check suction strainer regularly – keep clean

• Check and service pump and engine per maintenance schedule

• Drain pump before freezing weather

• Operate electric pumps at correct voltage, amperage and phase

• Be aware that if the pump is not priming (approx 2 minutes)there may be a leak somewhere in the suction side of thesystem or a vacuum pump, ie bearing broken. Refer to fault finding guide
