he pressure is mounting on Nico Rosberg to halt team-mate Lewis Hamilton’s charge in Brazil after letting slip another chance to stamp his authority on the title race last weekend.

There is no doubt there has been a sizeable shift in momentum between the Mercedes pair with Hamilton claiming five wins on the bounce to put himself firmly in the hot seat to take the title.

Hamilton’s victory in Austin came as a body blow to Rosberg as a mistake while in control of the race handed his team-mate the opportunity to claim victory. This came after laying down a marker to Hamilton to claim pole position in qualifying.

In previous seasons a 24-point lead with two races remaining would require a monumental effort to overcome. However, the introduction of double points for the final round in Abu Dhabi offers some blessed relief to Rosberg, ensuring his championship hopes are very much alive.

Double points aside, from a psychological point of view Rosberg will be desperate to issue a response in Interlagos just to turn up the pressure on his rival.

The title race took the role of a sub plot in America after Force India, Lotus and Sauber discussed the possibility of a boycott from the United States Grand Prix as grievances regarding the way finances are distributed to smaller teams came to the surface.

While a boycott was averted in Austin, the threat has kicked the powers at F1 into action with talks of a new financial arrangement to help smaller teams taking place this week.

Advantage Hamilton as pressure builds on Rosberg

aving spent much of the year seemingly in control of the title race it appears Nico Rosberg is in dire need of a result at

Brazil this weekend to boost his fading championship hopes.

In recent weeks the German has witnessed a 29 point championship lead slip from his grasp only to be transformed into 24 point deficit, courtesy of five consecutive wins for title rival Lewis Hamilton.

Such a swing of momentum in favour of his Mercedes team-mate has taken the wind out of Rosberg sails after a year where the 29-year-old has shown he is more than capable of beating Hamilton on the track.

However, what has been most distressing for Rosberg are the costly driving errors that have been severely punished by his opposite number.

In three of the last five races, Rosberg has been presented with opportunities to win only to hand the victory over to Hamilton as a result of a mistake. Pressure from the Brit in Monza saw Rosberg surrender the

Rosberg reaction required to keep Hamilton on his toesH

lead after missing a braking point, while a huge lock up at the start ended his hopes of victory in Russia.

Last weekend in Austin an error when engaging ERS cost him the lead to Hamilton, leaving the German to cut a figure of man who knows his title ambitions are slipping from his grasp. His face while watching Hamilton celebrate on the podium at Austin told the full story. But it is these very errors he must eradicate to stand any chance of beating Hamilton to the title.

Although clearly frustrated at the defeat to his team-mate in America, he remains optimistic following another dent to his title hopes.

“It was a tough day for me and it feels horrible to finish second after starting from pole,” said Rosberg after finishing second at Austin.

“It’s getting tougher but there is still a chance for the title and everything can happen. I’m still going to be pushing flat out just as I always have. I never give up.”

His confidence shouldn’t be questioned either despite staring at a 24 point deficit with two races remaining. This season Rosberg has a lifeline to fall back on with the

Mark Webber produced a dominant drive to claim only his second career win while Brawn GP driver Jenson Button secured a maiden Formula 1 world championship.

All the focus heading into the race was on championship leader Button, who needed to finish within four points of his Brazilian team-mate Rubens Barrichello to wrap up the title with a race to spare.

Qualifying was dominated by a tropical storm which interrupted the session for over an hour. In the end, Barrichello took

pole position from Webber’s Red Bull by a tenth of a second, while Force India’s Adrian Sutil was third. Button could only manage to secure 14th on the grid.

After a messy opening lap which saw Sutil, Jarno Trulli and Fernando Alonso retire, Barrichello he’d the advantage from Webber and BMW Sauber’s Robert Kubica. Button had moved to ninth after a strong opening lap.

Webber took control of the race soon after the first round of stops and proved to

be imperious on the Interlagos circuit. In the end, the Australian proved

untouchable as he took the chequered flag from Kubica and McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, who had started the race from 18th on the grid.

After a drama-filled race, Barrichello’s push faded after a late puncture thus handing Button the world championship despite the Brit crossing the finish line in fifth behind Sebastian Vettel. Barrichello eventually finished the race eighth spot.

introduction of double points for the final round of the campaign this year at Abu Dhabi.

In previous campaigns, it would take a monumental effort plus a slice of luck to turn around similar margin, but the advent of double points has ensured the championship will be decide at the final race.

While this new ruling could play into Rosberg’s hands, he knows a reaction in Brazil is required in order to give himself the best shot possible of securing the title. With Hamilton in form and only reliability

seemingly a factor in halting the Brit in the final two races, the pressure is mounting on Rosberg this weekend.

In a bizarre twist of fate if Rosberg was to claim the title in Abu Dhabi it would mirror to some extent the way his father secured his only world championship title in 1982.

Keke Rosberg claimed the crown while driving for Williams with just a solitary victory, the lowest amount of wins to secure a world championship in F1 history.

Theoretically Nico could win the world

championship with just four wins to Hamilton’s 10.

Although Hamilton will end the year comfortably with the most wins, Rosberg says he has no qualms about winning the world championship on the double points rule.

“As long as I have one point more at the chequered flag at Abu Dhabi I don’t care why or how,” added Rosberg.

“It’s the same for everybody. It’s a childhood dream to be F1 world champion. It would be very special.”

Circuit Guide

Interlagos is always one of the more challenging circuits in that it invariably throws in a few surprises. Historically it has been the final race of the season, which always incites unusual behaviour from the drivers. Seemingly normal procedures such as pit lane entry, for example, can often catch people out. Drivers know the regulations, however it is far from uncommon to see penalties awarded for repeated infringement of the pit lane entry boundaries, which are slightly unusual at this circuit. Beyond the men behind the wheel, however, there are plenty of unique characteristics which add to that unpredictability factor in São Paulo. The climate is highly variable, with rain often washing out the majority of running before clearing to leave an entirely dry day on the Sunday. This has produced some fascinating races over the years as teams and drivers must adapt quickly to a suddenly unfamiliar set of conditions. Elevation changes around the circuit also lead to rivers forming across the track during sustained periods of rain,

which can often lead to sessions being suspended. Track temperatures too can vary significantly, reaching levels as high as 48 degrees and dropping as low as the early twenties. These shifts can occur not only from season to season but from day to day, making it tricky to predict the best set-up direction for each session.

Track Surface

The track has just been resurfaced almost

in its entirety, which provides an unknown factor heading into the weekend that cannot be underestimated. Sochi was a case in point, with unusual tyre behaviour arising during the race in particular. The extent of this can depend on the quality of the surface, how long it has been laid down for and the materials used. The smoothness of the surface will also be a factor, with the significant bumps that have historically been a feature of this circuit potentially now negated. Grip levels too, both at the start of the weekend and as running progresses, will have an effect on how many adjustments will need to be made from run to run in

order to keep up with that track evolution. These are all questions which must answered as swiftly as possible. Again, this may well bring a few surprises - particularly with a softer tyre compound allocation that traditionally seen here in the soft and medium.

Overtaking Brazil often sees high quantities of

overtaking manoeuvres - and not always at corners which might be expected to create such opportunities. The DRS runs into Turns One and Four are the most obvious opportunities, however is it not uncommon to see drivers making bold moves at places where it might not be imagined possible. This will be a particularly interesting factor with the freshly laid track surface for this year, as drivers explore grip levels around different parts of the circuit. The first corner also often sees a high attrition rate in terms of contact - particularly on the first lap - which again will be exaggerated by a lack of grip level understanding.
