    just five basic kinds of action that one

    can perform in speaking.

    The second theory is the theory of the

    context of the situation that is

    proposed by Hymes.

    Five Basic Kinds of Action

    Assertive: Statements of fact, gettingthe viewer to form or attend to a belief.

    Directive: The sender uses this to get

    the receiver to do something. Commissive: the sender commits

    himself to do something

    Expressive: Sender expresses feelingtowards the receiver

    Declarative: to change an institutionalstate of affairs
