System description and Delivery notes

2. System description and Delivery notesspectro-guide is a portable spectrophotometerwhich can be used to ensure consistent quality inincoming and outgoing QC. It’s operated withbatteries to meet the demands of measurements inthe field. The measurement principle is based on themeasurement of spectral reflectance within thevisable spectrum from 400–700 nm. Twomeasurement geometries are provided: 45/0 andd/8. With 45/0, illumination occurs in a circularpattern at an angle of 45°, while the observationangle is 0°. With d/8, the sample is illuminateddiffusely, while the observation angle is 8° “from thevertical”. Additionally, 60° gloss is measuredsimultaneously.Up to 1500 standards and 999 samples can bestored. This includes not only individual readings, but also the calculation of mean values. Themeasurement results are shown on the display. The instrument is operated by the Operate button, four cursor buttons, and the automatic trigger. TheOperate button is also used to switch on theinstrument. All common color systems, color differanceequations, indices, illuminants and observers areavailable for quality control and analysis. The display can be configured in German, English,French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese or Chinese.

3. Power supplyBefore operating the instrument for the first time, please read the operating instructions and payattention to the safety instructions in Chapter 1.Unpack the device and check to make certain allpieces have been included with delivery (for scope ofdelivery, see Section Delivery notes).

3.1 Power supply battery-operated

The battery must be placed in the measuring unit foroperation service. The device runs on four AA 1.5-Valkaline or 1.2-V NiMH rechargeable battery.Use only alkaline batteries or NiMHrechargeables (AA /LR6)!Depending on the exact brand and the settings ofthe instrument, the capacity of each battery issufficient for about 8000 measurements. When thebattery voltage falls below the required minimumvoltage in the course of operation, the followingmessage appears on the display

Battery empty! To ensure that the unit is always ready for operation,it is recommended to have spare batteries handy, especially when performing measurements in thefield.

3.2 Changing the battery

To remove the battery compartment, hold theinstrument in one hand and depress the batterycompartment release with your index finger. At thesame time, pull the battery compartment out of theinstrument with your other hand, as indicated by thearrows in the accompanying illustration. Remove theused batteries.Only alkaline cells of the type AA /LR6should beused as new primary (i.e. non-rechargeable)batteries. If you prefer rechargeable batteries, youcan insert type AA NiMH batteries. The simplestmethod is to begin by inserting the two middlebatteries 1 and 2, followed by the outer batteries 3and 4. (See Fig. 2) If the polarity of the batteries ismistakenly reversed, the reverse polarity protectionbuilt into the instrument will prevent damage.

The basic system consists of the measuringinstrument, standards for calibration and testing, thesample area locator, and the instrument case. You should calibrate the instrument before startingto measure. The standards are provided for thispurpose. Be sure to always set the instrument onthe standard in the same direction. Always keep thestandards clean, or clean them before using them. When the measuring instrument is not in use, it isbest to store it in the instrument case. The case isalso the ideal place to store the accessoriesprovided with the instrument. The simplest way to operate the instrument is tograsp it from the side on which the batterycompartment is located. The thumb and last threefingers slide into the depressions on the side of theinstrument. The index finger rests on the top of theinstrument, where it can operate the cursor buttonsand the Operate button (Fig. 3).When measurements are performed with theautomatic trigger, you can hold the instrument inany desired manner. In this case, you can start themeasuring operation merely by applying evenpressure to the instrument from above (Fig. 4).

Getting started

5. Getting started

5.1 Turning on and measuring

The device is switched on with the Operate button. The company logo, copyright notice and versionnumber appear. The instrument then enters into theready-to-measure state. The display indicates the difference measurement. This is the default setting for the basic version. Themeasurement data for the sample are shown on theleft side of the display, while the differences to thelast measured standard appear on the right side. Atthis point, you can use the Operate button (the largebutton) to start the measurement of the sample. Asan alternative, you can perform the measurementwith the automatic trigger by pressing on theinstrument as illustrated here. You can perform a quick standard measurementwith the button.

First, the absolute values of the standard aredisplayed. If you perform a sample measurement atthis point, the measurement data for the sample willbe shown on the left side. The right side of thedisplay will show the differences between thissample data and the standard which has just beenmeasured.

Calibrate

6. CalibrateThree calibration standards are supplied with themeasuring instrument. These include a blackstandard and a white standard for calibration of theinstrument, as well as a green test standard. Toperform the gloss calibration, the instrument isfurther equipped with a high-gloss standard. Allstandards are manufactured from highly stablematerials. When performing calibration, it isespecially important to ensure that:1. The standard is clean.2. The instrument lies completely within the

diaphragm on the standard.3. You set the instrument on the standard as

shown in the illustration.Open the lid of the standard. Position the measuringinstrument so that the display points in the directionof the open lid and the front edge of the instrumentis parallel to the edge of the lid. This ensures thatyou will always perform the calibration under thesame conditions. The measurement results are very stable over time. With proper handling, it is possible to obtaincalibration intervals of up to 3 months.Recalibration is necessary when the opticalcomponents become dirty. You can determine the need for recalibration of theinstrument at any time by performing ameasurement with the green test standard. Thevalues for the test standard are stored in themeasuring instrument. When you measure thegreen standard with the “chk green” option from thecalibration menu, you receive a message indicatingwhether recalibration is necessary. You should also carry out this test immediately aftercalibration, in order to determine whether it wasperformed correctly.

17. Cleaning and maintenance

• Do not insert any objects into the measurementaperture for cleaning. The instrument could getdamaged - affecting a proper and safe operation.

• Do not use any acetone! The instrumenthousing is resistant to a number of solvents, butcannot be guaranteed to withstand all chemicals. You should therefore use a soft, moist cloth forcleaning. For cleaning excessive dirt, use ethanol orcleaning alcohol.

Cleaning standards• Do not use any acetone! The accuracy of the measurement can besignificantly impacted by using dirty or damagedstandards. Since the surfaces of the standards are highlysensitive, cleaning must be undertaken with greatcare. To clean standards, use a new lint-free cloth, dust-free lens paper or an optical cloth.Apply only slight pressure as you clean and makecertain there are no large particles stuck in the cloththat could damage the surface. For dirt that is difficult to remove, use an opticalcloth dipped in liquid. Then wipe the surface with adry optical cloth.Exact calibration is not possible unless thestandard is in perfect condition. If the condition ofthe standard seems doubtful because of itsappearance or measurement errors, we will behappy to check it for you.
