In order for this to be true, we need to ensure that the seat

dimensions are accurate.

Seat width – the width of the seat should refl ect the width of the

users pelvis with space for clothing. Leave a thickness of your palm

between the users hip and the seat i.e. around 3cm each side

Seat depth – the depth of the seat is vital to maintenance of a good,

comfortable posture. Measure from the back of the bottom to the back

of the knee, then subtract around 3cm to ensure that the chair does not

contact the back of the knee.

If the seat is too deep, the user will slide forward into a sacral slump.

Too short, and the seat causes increased pressure on the back of the thighs.

Seat height – measure from the heel to the back of the knee.

Optimum position is thigh horizontal, and enough space

to slide your fi nger under the front of the seat and the thigh

without too much pressure.

If the seat is too high, the feet will not be supported on the

fl oor or footplate and will create pressure.

If the seat is too low, the knees will be higher than the hips,

and will create diffi culty in standing

When seated, more contact made with the chair’s

support surface will help provide maximum stability.

Aim for 90/90/90

#1

Mostly we aim to provide a seat which positions

the users hips, knees and ankles at 90 degrees.

This is widely recognised as the ‘neutral position’

where stability and function are maximised.

The basic seating position should ensure that:

K With the person seated in the midline with their feet fl at

on the fl oor the seat height should be the same as the

measurement from the fl oor to the back of their knee.

The angle at ankles and knees should be approximately

90° and hips slightly more than 90°.

K When seated the pelvis should be level and not rotated

or tilted in either plane.

K To ensure weight is spread evenly along the length of both

thighs the seat should extend from back of buttocks to

about 2.5cm from back of knees.

K When seated with hips at 90˚ the full length of the

person’s back should be supported by the backrest.

K When seated in the midline the armrests should support

both forearms with elbows at approximately 90°. Shoulders

should be supported and be comfortable and level.

Where the user requires a supportive and comfortable chair to assist with daily activity ie standing, or changing position whilst protecting the user from tissue damage

A user requires a chair to be customised in size in order to best support them in maintaining independence

The user requires a chair to enable them to carry out regular repositioning with maximum functionality. It may provide additional postural and pressure control through specific actions or accessories

Where the user requires a significant intervention to prevent deterioration in postural or tissue viability, these chairs will be highly adjustable and able to provide support to a midline position together with substantial pressure relief

A neutral posture can be difficult to maintain when combinations of fatigue, gravity and poor muscle tone may result in leaning or a forward slump.

A recline action creates sheer between user and chair, in turn causing a risk of tissue damage and promoting submarining or slump.

When an individual is unable to independently shift their weight or change positions while seated upright, they are at a very high risk of skin breakdown, while sitting tolerance is compromised due to their inability to redistribute pressure.

Tilt-in-space seating solutions:

K Provide a means for weight shifts and position changes.

K Reduce the risk of skin breakdown by redistributing pressure from the pelvis to the back.

K Helps promote proper seating alignment.

K Helps maintain a neutral posture, facilitates thoracic extension, and a neutral pelvis.

K Maintains the optimal hip angle throughout the weight shift, avoiding extensor spasm.

The benefits of tilt-in-spaceTilt-in-space provides a change in position for clients who cannot independently shift their body weight.

Tilt-in-space re-orients the body within space and uses the effects of gravity to promote neutral posture.
