Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU)

Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU) under the auspices of UNESCO, was established in 2000 as a UNESCO Category 2 Centre in Education by the Agreement between UNESCO and the Republic of Korea. APCEIU is mandated to promote Education for International Understanding (EIU) towards a Culture of Peace, now interchangeably referred as Global Citizenship Education (GCED) under the framework of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Education 2030. APCEIU works in promoting GCED through its programmes including capacity-building of educators and international teacher exchange, policy research and development, material and information dissemination and partnerships and networking.

The ‘Letters From Korea’ series is the outcome of the Cross-cultural Education Material Development Project, a segment of the 2016 Asia-Pacific Teacher Exchange for Global Education(APTE). The APTE is a bilateral teacher exchange programme between the Republic of Korea and six other countries in Asia, sponsored by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea and implemented by APCEIU in collaboration with the Ministries of Education of partner countries. The 2016 APTE participants from partner countries have shared their hands-on experiences and reflections of teaching at Korean schools through this collection of their own narratives and illustrations.

Children in the Land of Rainbow The “Letters From Korea” series picture the everyday life of Korean students from the perspectives of foreign teachers. 16 teachers from Mongolia have written letters to their students in home countries about their short-term teaching and living experiences in South Korea. Although the letters are directed to the teachers’ own students, the lively stories depicted in eight letters can be relevant to anyone interested in how globalization brings the world together. While foreigners’ experiences exploring a new culture reveal people’s common attitudes toward cultural differences, the particular setting of the stories – classrooms – make those experiences to carry educational messages especially for students. To many Koreans, the portraits of everyday school life in Korea may look familiar and ordinary – with nothing special to note, but the aspects picked up and highlighted by the Mongolian teachers and the ways the stories are narrated may encourage even native Koreans to take another look at their own familiar daily practices through the eyes of strangers. As we are well aware of, stories of personal experiences should be interpreted with caution and critical reflection, and the teachers’ one month-long experiences at Korean schools should not be over-generalized. Yet, their stories are full of fresh insights and voices. The reason why this book is titled as “Children in the Land of Rainbow” is because, in Mongolian, Korea is “Solongos”, which literally means “Land of Rainbow”. Keeping in mind of this note, now… You’ve got a letter!

We have a happy life.Dear students,It's delightful to see how Korean peers have learned to value and take good care of nature from an early age. Together, Koreans strive to make green nature part of their lifestyle. We, friends of Rainbow Land, have really learned how to separate and throw away our waste. That’s why the area around Korean schools look very clean and bright.

A child who is self-confident always smiles.During class, Korean children freely express their opinions and participate independently and creatively with self-confidence.

This place is where teachers and students meet and greet each other cheerfully, always showing love and respect for one another. And time is considered “golden” here. We also need to be on time.

Extracurricular activities and parent involvementVarious after school clubs are offered depending on the needs and interests of children, as well as the opinions and requests of parents in Korea. The concern and passion that Korean parents show for the education of their children truly amazes people worldwide.

Today, we have math class again. It feels like the hands on the clock are tied. Why isn’t the time moving? In the next class, I wonder if my teacher will let us play a game.

Why did class end so fast! It was really fun to play a game during class.

Joyful ThursdayStudents liked the field trip on Thursday very much. The visually handicapped children could feel everything by actually touching them. Through their drawings, they could express what they felt.

Students, this time I want to tell you about traditional Korean houses. In the past, the royal families lived in houses made of stones with clay roof tiles and paper-covered windows. The traditional culture and customs were practiced until 1966. Farmers' houses were built with straw and clay.

The Current Landscape of Korea South Korea looks a little different today compared to the past. After being completely destroyed during the Korean war, the economy has developed so rapidly. Korea has become well known around the world as “the Miracle on the Han River”.Currently, the city of Seoul has a population of over 10 million inhabitants. It has also become a big center for regional cultural and educational development.

The book-making project under the title of “Letters From Korea” is an integral part of the 2016 Korea-Mongolia and Korea-Vietnam Teacher Exchange Programme, a three-month residential programme for exchange teachers. As part of the EIU(Education for International Understanding) segment of the Programme, the Project is designed to provide participating teachers with opportunities to share their stories about life at Korean schools, while letting the teachers also have hands-on experiences on the educational material development.Through the two-day workshop at APCEIU, the participants shared and reflected on their observations and experiences of school life in Korea. After their rich discussions, the stories were written in order to introduce Korean culture and school life to their Mongolian/Vietnamese students. The participants then created illustrations for their stories and also learned how to craft the illustrated book at the workshop. With careful editing, additional illustrations and a creative touch of layout design, the books are now published, with the anticipation to be read widely by those interested in Korean school life, and cross-cultural experiences of teachers. The books can also be used as resources for bilingual education.

About the Project “Letters From Korea”
