INTRODUCTION

THEauthor is well aware that to the majority of

readers the bulk of these writings will seemaltogether fantastic. Many fail to interest themselvesin things outside of the usual, and this failure largelyinvalidates their opinions. Many more refuse to con*sider whatever lies beyond the narrow province ofhard and proven fact, and from this class a sneer isinevitable. Among theosophists are many who willjudge every statement under the various heads of thisbook, by the authority of the Secret Doctrine ofH. P. filavatsky. This class should know that thatmarvelous work was not designed to be the compendiumof universal and final truth, but rather an expositionample as the times would warrant

We are now in a larger cycle and the veiled languagewhich H. P. B. and her associate Masters in theirwisdom deemed necessary, may safely be supersededby plainer speech. The author makes bold to say thatmany things briefly touched upon by him, things out-ardly

at variance, are nevertheless hidden beneaththe veils of the Secret Doctrine. The author doesnot deny that somewhat of speculation has beenallowed place in a work endeavoring to deal withphases of the ancient search for satisfying truth. Atthe same time he is free to confess that did not certainstatements embody his own convictions, he would not

That a great World-Teacher is soon to deliver acomprehensive and enlightening message is one ofhis convictions. As to the purport of that modern

message, he also has convictions and naturally a desireto express them.

In what are known to the world at large as earlyhistoric times, the conditions of this earth life were forthe most part endurable only because of belief in man'spilgrimage to other-world rest and happiness. Allexoteric religions are built upon this well-nigh univer-al

faith. Even where the doctrine of reincarnationobtains, every teaching except the most esoteric pre-ares

the disciple for a blessed translation to what arecalled higher realms. The idea of bringing heaven toearth has not heretofore been enlarged upon chieflybecause of the supposed imperfectibility of physicalmatter as such.

IN bygone ages the North was deemed a sacredland. Nations antedating historic Egypt, Persia,

Assyria and India ; peoples older than hoariest tradi-ion;civilizations more ancient than any whose

unearthed relics yield in tantalizing fragments thesecrets of a mighty past, have looked as with onecommon eye to a land beyond the ice barriers, asacred land upon whose temperate shores one immov-ble

Star of night shone from the zenith.In that polar home of mystery towered Meru, the

celestial height, the Olympus of the old Aryan Hindus,the mountain celebrated in the Vishnu Purana andother esoteric writings. Inevitably the earliest cos-ogonies

were built around the Pole Star and theimmediate circle of his attendants. Longing for thefixed, the permanent, men yet found themselves in aworld of passing things. Daily they beheld the Sunappearing and disappearing, like themselves attainingmeridian only to decline into the unresponsive gloom.And then what brief fulfilment in the Moon rising butto set, waxing but to wane 1 So with the Stars, solitaryor clustering, grouped no doubt by some mighty handand held by some unescapable bond, and yet change-ul

Amidst all the panorama of earth and heaven, notonce did the Pole Star betray the universal unrestFrom the fixed throne of the spheres he inspired hisministers, now the Stars of Ursa Major, but then theSeven Primordial Sages, moving round and round himclad in garments of resplendent flame. Mighty werethey to do his will. Dispensers of the Law, appor-tioners of reward and punishment, to them all deedswere open, all thoughts revealed; therefore, just andsure was their measure to every world and to its everycreature.

In prehistoric ages the Constellation of the Dragon,known

as the tree of knowledge, held place supremein heaven. The great golden Dragon of Wisdom was

the spine and brain of the Kosmos. Along that spine,as along the human spine, moved the sacred KundaliniFire. In the Dragon's head and constituting the thirdeye, that of inmost vision, burned the sacred MotherStar known as Isis,the Germ Star, nucleus of all thatis and yet shall be until the long Kosmic Night ofdissolution.

In the body of the Dragon was another Star, the noless sacred Osiris, now known as Alpha Draconis, thePole Star of centuries long, long before the Star ofBethlehem proclaimed the reshaping of ancient Truth.While Isis was the primeval Egg or Nebula, Osiriswas the Egg-born, the first breaking away from thatNebula. He was the bright Star dropped from theheart of Eternity ; the beacon of hope on whose sevenRays hang the seven worlds of Being. Symbolically

speaking, He was the child and husband of the greatMother, and through the creative Kundalini Fires orBreaths passing from one to the other of these twogigantic Suns, were engendered the hosts of heaven.That the original Pair are no longer conspicuous isdue to the stupendous sacrifice whereby in the begin-ing

of time they gave themselves to their progeny,thus making the universe one in essence, one in dutyand also one in its destiny which is to be drawn backinto the Parent Heart, and eventually into the unman-ifested Source of all.

The idea of symbolism no doubt originated with thePole Star Alpha and the imaginary circle formed bythe moving of Ursa Major around it. Symbolism itselfbegins with the circle empty of the Pole Star, thussuggesting space void of visible creation. In the hoarycosmogony here mentioned, the Unmanifested One isthe First Logos, while Isis and Osiris are the SecondLogos. These three constitute the universal Trinityof trinities,Source of all that follows.

The first children of the Second Logos are the ThirdLogos, the Seven Primordial Sages before alluded to.In these matters a difference of opinion existed, forcertain teachers gave the place of honor to the Sevenof the Pleiadic group whose brightest star, Alcyone,they deemed the Center around which our Sun revolvesin an orbit requiring hundreds of millions of years forits completion. They also taught that each of theseven planets, including our earth, is occultly con-ected

with one of the Pleiadic Seven.

Turning to prehistoric times, imagine ourselves uponthe northmost limit of the globe with Alpha Draconisdirectly overhead, and of his seven Rays four areemanating from the zenith to the cardinal points.Now we behold the original cross, in this instance thecross of matter whereon all Stars and all beings arecrucified until the great night of Kosmic rest.

Modem astronomy shows that the fixityof the NorthStar is due to the coincidence of the earth's upper polewith a certain section of the heavens ; it further showsthat the place of supposed stability varies slowlythroughout the great cycle of the equinoxes, therebymaking Vega and Alpha Draconis and Polaris and,later, Alpha Caephus, successive sovereigns of theNorth. Thus modern investigation would give quietusto the ancient teaching. However, the old Illuminatihave forestalled argument based on this view, for it isprovable that they had charted the circle describedby the pole of the earth and had computed the yearsnecessary to its completion. Moreover the initiatedfew considered the earth a sphere having its cardinalpoints. To them the universe was also a sphere hav-ng,

like the earth, its upper or positive pole, its loweror negative pole, and its equator running east andwest. For reasons deeply occult they believed thisearth the favored planet of those ruled by our Sun.To touch somewhat on a mystery, our Sun, although aminor luminary, was, during past ages, in direct linewith the central Sushumna Ray, chiefest of the sevenemanating from the true North.

Let it be remembered that the motion of the circum-polar groups is in the ancient theory both real andseeming; the first motion requiring ages, the secondbeing diurnal, while the fourteen orbits described areever surcharged with the energy of those groups.Thus is formed an inner ''Ring Pass Not,'' and anouter division sovereign over the zodiacal constella-ions

and all else of Stars and planets throughout theKosmic Sphere or expanded Egg. Stars and Constel-ations

farther and farther removed from the Center,revolve in larger and larger orbits ; thus the universeconsists of concentric circles, imperfect only becauseof the mutual attraction of all heavenly bodies.Certain of these orbits are so vast that modernastronomers, because of insufficient data, suppose thatno exact system controls the comings and goings ofthe sky; also that Suns innumerable are destined orrather doomed to hurl on and on in straight pathsdeviating not save for the brief attraction of somechance neighbor methodless as the other; also theysuppose that possible destruction awaits even thebrightest Star of we know not what hope and promise ;destruction in shape of some onrushing fierygiant, orsome dark derelict from unsoundable abysses andunthinkable seons of space and time.

That dead worlds should clash is not strange since awise law draws them together says the Secret Science ;but that living Suns presiding over planetary evolutionsshould destroy each other even in the mazes of theMilky Way the Secret Science emphatically denies.

To complete his journey from the southern to thenorthern limit of the Milky Way our Sun requires notless than fiftymillion years. Astronomers have notyet detected a curve in his path, but then only a frac-ion

of his orbit shall have been measured by thatvast journey. While Alpha Draconis was deemed tobe the true Center of Kosmic evolution, certain ancientteachers believed that our Sun is a planet to *thePleiadic group, which in turn revolves around thePole Star. In the Greek legend of the seven daugh-ers

of Atlas, one of whom, Sterope, married a mortal,and all of whom were translated to the sky, is hiddena mystery of occultism. Sterope, who hid herself forshame and who therefore has been called the ''lostPleiad, is,according to some teachers, at the head ofthis septenary group, and therefore in direct touchwith the Supreme Center.

Divine Wisdom has decreed that the highest worldof being is,by the law of polar opposites, bound to thelowest. Thus the allegory is endowed with mysticaland magical meaning. It is taught that, because ofundeveloped possibilities,our Sun is one of the lowestSuns and so receives directly the seventh or highestPleiadic Ray. Our earth for the same reason one ofthe lowest planets, receives directly, through themedium of our Solar Logos, that seventh Ray. Itcontacts the earth at a particular point, which at theautumnal equinox 2170 . C. was identical with theshaft of the great Pyramid, which, saith the legend,was built by an Adept king.

The influence of the Pleiades makes for universalharmony, as hinted in the book of Job, and theirseventh Star has been called the Christ Star, the truesource of the Christos as a Kosmic principle. Forthis reason it was held that the Avatars, or Divinedescents into flesh, have taken place on this earthonly.

THE PLANETARY PROCESS

THE Masters of the Ancient Arcane Wisdomwere men who had learned the lesson of humil-ty,

for the scheme of creation as understood by them,showed things the highest to be evolved from thingsthe lowest and the stone rejected by the buildersbecoming at last the head of the corner. The follow-ng

is an outline of specialteaching in regard to man'sorigin,progress and attainment.

This world's humanity whose destiny is of the loft-est,is made up of failures from the evolutions of

other worlds, all of them apparently higher than thisglobe-chain. Our solar system is ruled by the Logos,the ten Hierarchies of perfected Beings whose habita-ion

is the ten-fold Sun. These Hierarchies may beconsidered as colors in an ascending series, sevenvisible and three beyond our vision. Each Hierarchyis the Solar Father or Author of his Ray. In ascend-ng

order these Rays are (i) violet, (2) red, (3) green,(4) indigo, (s) yellow, (6) light-blue,(7) orange,(8) beyond normal vision, (9) beyond, (10) beyond.

The ten planets governed by the Hierarchies are indescending series as follows: (i) Jupiter, light-blue,(2) Mercury, yellow, (3) Venus, indigo, (4) Saturn,green, (5) Mars, red, (6) Moon, violet, (7) Earth,orange, (8) Neptune, below normal vision, (9) Uranus,below, (10) outmost planet, unknown to physicalscience, below.

The (i) Violet Hierarchy has for polar opposite (i)Jupiter, light-blue. The (2) Red Hierarchy has forpolar opposite (2) Mercury, yellow. The (3) GreenHierarchy has for opposite (3) Venus, indigo. Therest of the series follow in like order. Each of the tenplanets is built from ten grades of substance, eachSolar Hierarchy building that grade which is his polaropposite; thus the (i) Violet or lowest Hierarchybuilds the highest planetary substance, which, follow-ng

the usual esoteric enumeration, we shall call theseventh, in other words, the Atmic plane of theplanets. The (2) Red Hierarchy builds the (6)yellowor Buddhic plane of the planets and so on. The (7)Orange Hierarchy builds the first material plane of theplanets. The 8th Hierarchy builds the denser materialplane and so on. Only the greatest Hierarchy cancompress the rock and mineral framework of theglobe-chains. Exoteric, and even esoteric instructionsare full of blinds, and it may here be stated that thescheme of the planetary chains is quite unlike thatgiven in such works as A. P. Sinnett's ''EsotericBuddhism.'' Every planetary chain is built on thesame model ; thus the dense center of each is a quater-

nary of colors from the orange downward. Nextabove the orange, and penetrating its lighterparts, isthe larger Astral globe of violet ; next larger and somore refined, is the red Kamic globe penetrating amore dense orange matter; next larger is the greenglobe of lower Manas penetrating still deeper; nextlarger is the indigo, higher Manas; then Buddhi,yellow, and lastlyAtma, light-blue,penetrating all ofthe orange. The globes of each chain which cor-espond

to the 8th, 9th and loth Hierarchies, areunevolved and contracted and not really connectedwith our septenary evolution. However, the orange ofour chain, correspondent of the 7 th Hierarchy, will intime expand to a sun-like splendor.

The Solar Builders having finished the globe-chains,each Hierarchy of the ten, or if we confine theexplanation to our system of evolution each Hier-rchy

of the seven, emanated to the globe-chain inhis keeping the lives analagous to the monads ofLeibnitz that were to perfect themselves in sevenconsecutive rounds. A round is a descent throughseven shades of a prismatic color, then an ascentthrough the same.

To exemplify, a round of Jupiter is in descent ist,light-blue; 2nd, yellow-light-blue; 3rd, indigo-light-blue; 4th, green-light-blue; 5th, red-light-blue; 6th,violet-light-blue; 7th, orange-light-blue. In ascent,the order is reversed. The Jupiter evolution, thesource of man's seventh or highest principle or body,is the evolution farthest removed from that of our

planet. It is a simple primary one, normally confinedto the seven divisions of the highest globe of thechain, and begins the *' group-soul evolutions of otherchains.

In the first round of Jupiter the lives,beginning inthe pure light-blue,enetrate only to a certain extent theincreasingly dense divisions of the seventh or highestglobe. It holds true of all globe-chains that only inthe lowest arc of the fourth round do the lives begin topenetrate the lower shades of the dominating color.In each round is described a larger circle,but only inthe seventh round of Jupiter is the highest region ofthe light-blue and the lowest of the orange-light-blueexplored.

The Mercury-yellow-evolution,although one lowerin the scale, emanated from the (2) Red Hierarchy ofthe Logos. The life-wave to Mercury passing throughthe sixth globe of the Jupiter chain, carried with itcertain of the light-blue that had descended to thatglobe because they were better fitted for the Mercuryevolution. These uniting with the Mercury monadsoriginated the dual evolution of Atma-Buddhi.

The wave from the (3) Green Hierarchy to Venus,indigo, passed through the fifth globe of Jupiter andMercury, carrying with it from each, many whohad dropped to those globes in seeking a yet lowerevolution. Thus we have in the Venus scheme thegroup-soul, Atma-Buddhi-Manas. The wave from the(4) Indigo Hierarchy passed through the fourth globeof Jupiter,Mercury and Venus, carrying many down

to the Saturn evolution which is Atma-Buddhi-Manasand lower Manas. It is seen that Jupiter is the fatherof the higher triad and Saturn the father of the lowerquaternary. The wave from the (s) Yellow Hierarchypassed through the third globe of the planets down toMars, red. The Martian scheme is therefore Atma-Buddhi-Manas-lower Manas and Kama. The wavefrom the (6) Light-blue Hierarchy passed through thesecond globe of the planets to the Moon-chain, violet ;so that evolution was a six-fold one. The wave fromthe (7) Orange Hierarchy passed through the firstglobe of the planets to our own globe-chain, orange,so our scheme is the seven-fold one described in exo-eric

works.The normal Moon-chain beings, having finished

their evolution, were united to their Solar Hierarchy,but the failures,of whom there were six classes, camehere and united themselves with the only part of mannative to this world, to wit, the various grades of hum-lephysical lives emanated by the Orange Hierarchy.Ultimately the failures of the six globe-chains weregathered into group-souls on our earth at the lowestarc yet explored, and therefore in the middle of thefourth round.

In the Venus scheme were certain entities of apeculiar sort. Not adapted to their globe evolution, theyhad dropped to lower globe conditions in their chain.There they had contacted the life-wave to Saturn andto Mars and to the Moon, without having been drawninto any of these; but the life-wave flowing to our

even a ten-fold group-soul; but be the incarnation normalor abnormal) his various souls are unified, made toappear one, by the

I am I of the highest soul-consciousness in him, which in abnormal incarnation isthe Astral or personal will consciousness, or else theKamic or selfish desire consciousness. In normalincarnation, the Atmic or spiritualwill consciousness isthe real unifier,although the I am I would seemto originate in the physical brain, chief center ofmaterial body consciousness during earth-life.

The materialist has yet to learn that after death ofthe physical body the I am I continues, althoughmaterial consciousness is no longer included in theunified group-soul. The entity passing to more andmore interior planes, the unif3dng spiritual will domi-ates

a lessening group until, on the Devachanicplane, the seven-fold becomes the trinity. In returnto incarnation, the spiritual will by a reverse processenlarges its dominion and again is the unifying soul ofthe seven.

To the man of today his affirmation, I am physicalbody 1 is so obviously true that it cannot well be sub-rdinate

to his affirmation, I am soul which reallyis more or less a matter of faith ; while his affirmation I am spirit is even more so. How different theaffirmation of a being of the perfected seventh racewith whom faith has become clearest sight. Owingnot only to the individualization of his every con-ciousness,

but also to the harmonious union of all asone group-soul consciousness, he can say with full

realization, I am seven in one or, if he choose, hecan make any of the seven the dominating conscious-ess

and think and act in that as though the otherswere non-existent. From this we may know of theSolar Logos that while the ten Hierarchies havethe Supreme Consciousness of absolute Oneness, anyHierarchy or any member thereof, can at will focusthe consciousness of the entire ten in himself, or,shutting out all others, he can think and act with theconsciousness of any single Hierarchy, although bynatural bent he would act with that of his own Hier-rchy.

The completed evolution of the solar systemwill enable every entity to focus in himself theSupreme Consciousness of the Logos, or the conscious-ess

of any of the Solar Hierarchies. Kosmic evolutionis ever toward a grander correspondent of this solarunity, the goal being Kosmic group-soul consciousness.

As we have defined him, man the group-soul is com-arableto a shaped and centered sphere. On theother hand, life in the lower kingdoms is more or less

nebulous. Thus of the insect creation every group-soul sends out millions of lives in tiny physical bodies,each magnetically connected with its source. Higherand higher in the scale of being the group-souPs out-ut

is less and less; the nebula is condensing andcohering to an orb. The lives whose like in the insectcreation were scattered far and wide, are more andmore gathered into fewer and fewer physical bodies untUin the higher creatures the animal soul permeates asingle body, the physical manifestation of a group-soul

once embryonic, and still infantile when compared tothat of man the septenary.

In the ultimate condition of Earth's humanity asone gigantic and complex group-soul, is seen the per-ected

correspondent of the nebulous group-soul of theinsect family. Thus everywhere the law of polar oppo-sites links together things and conditions outwardlythe most diverse. Were it otherwise, the final unifica-ion

of all life would be an unfulfilable dream, and thepessimist rather than the optimist would be the logicaland convincing reasoner.

The beings of other world-schemes are especiallyinterested in the scheme of this earth, for, as alreadyshown, our evolution synthesizes all preceeding ones.The beings of the Mercury scheme have developeda sense of oneness with Higher Powers not to beattained by this humanity. The beings of the Venusscheme have a pure intelligence transcending thatacquirable by our Masters. On the other hand, theseethereal beings know nothing of material things, norcan they ever know until perfected man shall show tothem the fruit of triumph over hard earth conditions.In exchange, these lofty beings will communicate toman every result of their own peculiar evolution. Inlike manner, every perfected humanity of every worldwill bring its sheaves to one common sharing; andbecause of this, the perfection of individual conscious-ess

shall be attained.Whether or not the planets of our system are inhab-ted

those who know nothing of globe-chains the questionseems easy to answer ; for have they not found theMoon devoid of atmosphere and Jupiter still at almostfire heat ? while Uranus and Neptune are not yet suffi-iently

dense to sustain other than marine life.Swedenborg was led to believe that he met andconversed with beings once men on both the materialplanet Jupiter and the material Moon ; but, in the daysof the Swedish seer, astronomers had not discoveredthe planetary conditions above mentioned, which ascan be seen, discredit his statements.

Having outlined the manner of building each planet,also its scheme of evolution, we readily see thatany evolution upon the material globe of Jupiter mustbe far below the limit of the normal which is confinedto the seventh globe. Evolution upon the material globeof Mercury is one degree higher than on that ofJupiter because the normal evolutibn of the formerextends down through the sixth globe. Upon the mater-rial globe of Venus, evolution is one degree higherthan on that of Mercury because on Venus the normalevolution extends down through the fifth globe.Following this proceedure we find life one degreehigher upon the material globe of Saturn. On Marsthe material evolution is two globes below the normal,hence the impossibilityof intelligentagency in con-tructing

the so-called canals.If the material Moon were habitable the entities

there would be failures who had dropped one globefrom the normal Occult Science recognizes no normal

THE OUTER PLANETS

IT is commonly observed that many creatures of theanimal kingdom possess certain faculties not givento man. The homing instinct of birds and certainanimals is well known. The intelligence of bees andants while known, is unaccounted for by those nothaving the clue.

Occult Science teaches that the kingdom next belowus is to some extent in the evolutionary wave emanat-ng

from the 8th Hierarchy. Civilized man when lessadvanced than now possessed certain faculties peculiarto the evolution due to that Hierarchy, but his higherprinciples have since drawn him from the eighth life-wave and confined him to his proper sphere, theseven-fold evolution.

Physical Science holds that the Sun, as seen fromthe outer planets, is a mere star incapable of lightingand warming them ; so organic life is there environed byconditions cheerless indeed. Occult Science teachesthat the highest Rays of our Sun are well-nigh unseenand unfelt in a globe emanating from the (7) Orange

is a globe-chain behind the vegetable. What isnow the vegetable kingdom emanated from the 9thHierarchy and will find its appropriate place of devel-pment

on the planet Uranus. The mineral kingdomemanated from the loth Hierarchy, and will find itsappropriate place of development on the outmostplanet.

Each of the ten creative Solar Rays finds its bestfield of distinguishing activitywhen in descent it con-acts

the lowest aspect of its polar opposite. Thereforethe animal, the vegetable and the mineral kingdoms

all about us, now fall far short of indicating theirpossibilitieswhen, in its appropriate globe-chain, eachof the three shall have contacted the full creativepower of its own Solar Hierarchy.

The three lower kingdoms destined for the outerplanets, have during long ages been detained here forgood reasons. Since first he became a septenary,man, of all beings to be found in the seven globe-chains, has in some ways most nearly approached thefulness of the highest Divine Archetypes. In futureaeons the lower kingdoms on their respective planetsshall each compass an evolution not unlike that ofman, yet more comprehensive than his is capable ofbecoming.

The unity of structural plan characterizing allvertebrates is due to imitation of man's physicalbody as it has been in different eras of his world-history. As man consciously or unconsciously patternsafter the Solar Logos, especially his own Hierarchy,so the animal unconsciously patterns after the humanmodel, while the vegetable in more imperfect waypatterns after the animal, and the mineral after theplant. This patterning, due to propinquity, is in thewise plan of those great Hierarchies who have in chargethe special evolution of the so-called lower kingdoms.What to the animal kingdom should always have beenan advantageous association eventually helpful to manhimself, has too often been made disadvantageous byhis ignorance and cruelty. Hence the need of thatenlightening which the Arcane Science affords.

scheme. The residuum of any planetary scheme doesnot reallybelong to it,but rather to one whose Logos,reaching higher and therefore lower, shall yet lift thatresiduum to unity with itself.

Drawn into some fiery collision, the residuum of ourtenth planet will begin in the first spiral of the nebulaa prodigious ascent requiring unthinkable aeons for itsculmination. Evidently the evolutionary scheme of theWisdom-Religion is not that of the Darwinians.Never, according to the former, can a mineral in thisworld become a vegetable ; no vegetable can becomean animal; no animal, unless of the '* delayed races,''can become a man. When the human race hasattained a certain development, then, because of thelaw of magnetic attraction, the animal creation willseek its own globe-chain.

When constructed by their Hierarchies, the physicalglobes of the ten sacred planets were self-lumirious.After the appearance of the Kamic principle theybecame fiery. These have since cooled and, in thecase of all preceding the physical globe of our earth-chain, they will so remain, emitting only the reflectedlight of the Sun. Jupiter is self-luminous only on thehighest globe of his chain where his evolution is con-entrated.

Mercury is self-luminous on his twohigher globes because of the evolution of Atma-Buddhi. Venus is self-luminous on her three upperglobes because of the triple evolution, Atma-Buddhi-Manas. When her evolution is complete the Earthwill be self-luminous on the entire seven globes

of the chain. Neptune will be self-luminous on eightof his globes, two of which are physical. Uranus willbe self-luminous on nine of his globes,three of which arephysical ; the outmost planet on the entire ten of hischain, four of which are physical. The lowest globeof that planet while as a whole self-luminous, will con-ain

the unassimilated residuum of all planetary chains.The characteristic color of the globes of any chain

are tinted, or will be, by the dominating color of thechain. Thus the orange of our earth will tint everyglobe including the light-blueor highest. The Moonin her prime was self-luminous on six globes beginningwith the Astral. Her perfected humanity has returnedto the Solar Logos, while, as we have seen, her unper-fected life has passed to this globe which in exotericparlance is therefore said to be a reincarnation of theMoon-chain.

Those self-luminous globes whereon the normal evo-utionof

achain is accomplished, will, with theirhumanities pass upward to the Solar Logos. All lower

globes of the chain must pass down to assimilationwith more material conditions on other planets.

THE SECRET PLANETS

IN certain esoteric instructions mention is made ofwhat are known as the secret planets. Informa-ionconcerning these has always been withheld from

the general public, and even in the schools of occultismthe knowledge imparted has been but meagre. How-ver,

assimilation, something about these planets may begiven out.

To physical eyes the Moon shines with but the bor-owedlight of the Sun ; yet to Astral sight it becomesthe violet planet. This it was to an earlier age whenthe third-eye, that of spiritualvision, was generallyoperative. As previously explained, the violet Astralglobe of the Moon-chain was the basic sphere of thelunar evolution. When the higher globes of that chain,together with the perfected Moon humanity, were unitedwith the Solar Logos, a considerable residuum of theviolet globe remained. Of that residuum whatever isassimilable by our chain is passing to this planet butwith it a cruder residuum passes through our chain tothe outer planets. Thus the Moon's Astral influence isboth beneficent and malevolent, and yet not malevo-ent

if one comprehend the outcome.Seen by the early races. Mars was the red planet ;

red to-day because in this world-period the red ofMars, the Kamic principle emanating from the basicglobe of the Martian scheme, penetrates and rules thelower quaternary of man's and therefore of earth'sseven-fold constitution. Hence the Martian red is tosome extent visible to physical eyes. To the ancientraces Saturn was the planet from whose green globethe thought-force of its humanity was directed down-ard

even to the abode of terrestrial man, there tostrengthen in him that middle principle which weldsthe upper and the lower triad.

We are told that in a future age the planetsare to shine each in distinctive color more resplendentthan before and this because of man's clarified vision.During the fifth round Saturn shall be seen as the greenpredominating sphere. Throughout the sixth roundVenus is to be the indigo ruling star, and throughoutthe seventh round the yellow Mercury shall reign sov-reign

over all.

THE KOSMIC PROCESS

T^HE Planetary Process shows the law wherebyX in successive rounds greater heights and like-iseprofounder deeps are attained, and therefore

larger circles are encompassed. This law, havingwidest application, governs the Kosmic process, thesuccession of universes.

In an early Kosmic Day unthinkable aeons behindus, the light of the Kosmic Logos but little penetratedthe abyss which may be called its negative pole. Forimmeasurable regions of that abyss evolution did notyet exist, while the unassimilated residuum of actualevolution was indeed considerable. Successive evolu-ionary

periods enabled the Kosmic Logos to penetratelower and lower conditions of matter, while its ownevolution lifted it more and more toward the SupremeUnmanifest. These evolutionary periods have enlargedthe visible universe not to that limitless which thephysicistsupposes, but in fact to proportions which themost modern telescope suggests rather than reveals.

The lowest conditions from which the present Kos-mos originated are unknowable to man. That they aremuch lower than those of preceding evolutionary peri-ds

analogy reveals. Because the downward arc of thepresent great cycle of progress descends further thanthat of any preceding one, it follows that the oppositearc is to lift the foremost life to greater heights thanheretofore attained. Thus from period to period theKosmic process grows vaster and more intricate, andstillthere exist unsounded deeps and therefore unsealedheights before whose contemplation finite mind utterlyfails.

Ere the Absolute can be wholly expressed, its ulti-ateopposite must be explored. All life rising from

that ultimate must in the Kosmic process attain highestpolar relation to the Absolute. Then through the greatKosmic Heart every being shall share in the grandestevolution of the lowest deep of matter. The KosmicLogos is all-powerful, hence failure wheresoever wit-essed,

is due to misplacement because of which theappropriate Ray from the Kosmic Logos is not con-acted.

Furthermore, misplacement after all is seemingand not real because the outcome of the Kosmic processdemands that very misplacement and the experienceof failure therein.

When the real upward course of a misplaced entitybegins, necessarilyin a lower environment, the lessonof failure will carry it past the critical point which oth-rwise

it could never have surmounted. Through themanifold adjustments of the seemingly stern but really

compassionate law of Karma, harmony is evolved fromdiscord and sweet from bitter. Not comprehendingthese things,the fool has said in his heart, '* There isno God, while the shallow illogicalentimentalist evendeclares that evil is but a false appearing, and goodalone is real.

THE KOSMIC SCHEME

THE essential nature of the manifested universeand therefore its relation to the -hidden FirstCause, also the end to be attained through Kosmicmanifestation, have inspired philosophers and theolo-ians

in every age and country producing men capableof pondering the deep things of God. Touching thesemomentous questions, the ancient Arcane Science hasits contribution to thought and, while the assertionmay seem overbold, it has also its contribution toknowledge. Every pure monism constructed, or con-structible by the philosophically ingenious, contains adualism, either obvious or more or less concealed.Avoiding this contradiction, this fatal pitfall, theArcane Science at once declares for dualism.

The universe in toto is two-fold, to wit, the ever-concealed Positive Pole and the periodicallymanifestednegative pole. To finite mind and perhaps to all mindwhatsoever. Being on its secret side is wholly perfect.To bring about a corresponding perfection in the neg-tive

aspect or pole of Itself,in other words, to attainrounded perfection that of both the inner and the

outer the Unmanifested employs what is known asmanifestation.

From the view-point of man, and no doubt fromthat of beings far above him, the First Cause is limit-ess

in what we define as time and space; thereforecan the First Cause express Itself outwardly in nothingless than what to us, though not necessarily to Itself,is illimitable time and space. That this operation isyet far from the finish is proved by birth, death anddecay everywhere within and without the confines ofour solar system.

Every atom called into manifestation by the PositivePole of Being, has its correspondent in the Positive ;therefore must that atom attain to negative perfection,for should it be destroyed or permanently dwarfed,then rounded perfection of the Whole will to thatextent be defective. There is no human standard bywhich to determine the ultimate value of things nowdenominated great or small. Thus, in the final perfec-ionof all spheres, the stone by the wayside may rankwith the brain of Plato, or the heart of Buddha.

That which is perfect is immutable. The imperfecton the way to perfection is subject to cyclic change,but its waxings and wanings, its comings and goings,are in ever-enlarging cycles. On the other hand, thatwhich retrogrades now moves in lessening cycles likethe outwo| n earth-encircling Moon once revolving inthe planetary paths. In their succession universestend to perfection and so to permanence ; a reachablecondition according to the Secret Science. This

what is sacred to its Polar Opposite in the UnmanifestAll drawing together whether through ideal friendship,or any form of love, has, far beneath the obvious, thesecret desire of the spirit to attain true relation tolove's unseen Source.

Only through higher and higher intermediates canthis be accomplished. The ordinary intermediates arethose earthly loves into which one is born and thoseachieved during life. A higher intermediate is thelove into which every pure religion lifts one, that ofsome exalted being endowed with every human virtuemany times magnified. This is well, for such beingsexist; yet, according to the Secret Science, they areonly intermediates though very necessary ones.

The heathen, bowing to wood and stone, seeks inhis poor way an intermediate better than ordinarylove has revealed to him. This too is well, for everyhuman foot must touch the first rude stepping stone inthe long ascent to Truth. On a higher stone such dullidols are flung away that more adequate ones maymould the man, for, like his civilized and even his** enlightened brother, he must have his idols.

Among the three supreme Kosmic forces. Mind isthe enlightener ; Will is the strengthener ; but Love isthe binder. From one point of view the chief endattainable through the Kosmic process is first thebinding together of every atom of the manifest, andultimately the binding together of both the manifestand the Unmanifest. Because of this view. Love isusually deemed the Supreme Kosmic force.

MINERAL AND VEGETABLE LIVES

BY the law of polar opposites, the lowest kingdomof nature emanated from that Hierarchy of theSolar Logos, which, as we have seen, compressed themineral foundations of the globe chains. The livesinforming the mineral kingdom of our material globehave passed through the lowest globes of the planetaryseries beginning with Jupiter.

The lives which inform what is known as the occultmetals, during their slow descent have acquired certaincharacteristics from the planets. Thus tin is occultlyrelated to Jupiter, quicksilver to Mercury, copper toVenus, lead to Saturn, iron to Mars, silver to theMoon and gold to the Sun itself. In descent throughthe planetary chains, the mineral substances havegradually hardened. All have acquired maximumdensity on our chain.

In humble conditions far below the plain of self-consciousness, the occult minerals here begin theirmission of service,thus preparing themselves for vastlygreater service and advancement on the globe-chainwhere the mineral kingdom is to attain the highest andfullest self-conscious life possible in our solar scheme.

Gold, whose characteristics were derived from thetenth Hierarchy itself, is fitted by endowment forsupreme service. Crowning the heads of kings, it isthe insigniaof their authority. In adorning the palaceand beautifying the temple, its uses have been mani-old,

as also in the ceremonial of worship. A little33

band of gold is the token of cemented friendship andof plighted troth, while, in the mechanical arts, theuntarnishable and most malleable and ductile of metalsproves itself invaluable. On the other hand, evil menhave perverted its uses till every crime in the calendaris instigated by the greed of gold.

The lives which inform the vegetable kingdom ema-atedfrom the ninth Hierarchy of the Solar Logos.

These have been filled with capability for service bytheir Solar Source and also by the planets in descend-ng

series. Thus the atomic lives of wheat, that mostgenerally useful of grains, is the gift of Venus to ourplanet. Because the vegetable kingdom is nearer toits own planet and so nearer to man, it renders to hima service more obvious than that of the mineral king-om.

It affords him food and shelter and healing,while the beauty and fragrance of the floral world area pure delight. On the other hand, the virus of evilsuggestion emanated by mankind has tainted certainspecies with virulent poison.

SOUND AND COLOR

IN the Grecian School of Pythagoras the pupil wastaught concerning those primal and universalmodels after which were created both the huge andthe infinitesimal. The orbital sweep of Suns and thewhirling dance of atoms each around a pivotal pointof balance, were a Kosmic symphony of motion andcolor and sound emanating from the grain of dust as

also from the august Attendants of the Polar Star.Therefore, while in the curriculum of the great Initiate

geometry was compulsory, the study of music was noless so. In the system of Pythagoras the notes of themusical scale, like the seven primaries of the colorscale, were each divisible into seven. Every note andits sub-divisions corresponded to a certain planet andits septenary evolution.

Beginning with Jupiter, thus far the highest planetin our system, the musical scheme was as follows : theseven sub-divisions of the note G were sacred to theplanet of the light-blue. There tones in the musicof the spheres were said to be ineffably sweet andpure, but necessarily of limited range. F was the notesacred to Mercury the yellow planet. The seven sub-ivisions

of this note, in addition to those of G, gaveto the Buddhic planet a range of fourteen tones. Ewas sacred to Venus, the dark-blue planet of pureintelligence,whose range was therefore augmented totwenty-one tones. D was sacred to Saturn, the greenplanet of the mundane mind, whose musical resourceswere indicated by twenty-eight tones. C gave to Mars,the red planet of purified passion, no less than thirty-five tones. B was sacred to the Moon, mother of theviolet Astral envelope of man, and gave to her anample harp of six strings and forty-two tones; whileto Earth, orange, mother of the physical form, the Agave the full gamut of forty-ninetones. The upper Anecessary to the full octave, was sacred to the Sun,and began his series of ten ascending notes corre-

In the planetary scale three notes and their sub-ivisionslie below the A of our globe-chain. These

are the polar opposites of the A, B, C, of the 8th,9 th and loth Heirarchies of the Logos. The scalebeginning with the low G is now discordant with theuntold suffering,he horror and the rage of our youngerbrothers of the brute kingdom, but in future aeonsit is to be wholly attuned to their enduring andtriumph. What ear or what intelligencen any worldor time that kills and eats, and even wantonly destroys,can comprehend its depth and grandeur and appeal-ng

power ?

PLANES OF FORCE

OCCULT Science divides both the solar systemand the constitution of man into seven planes

or states of consciousness. The lowest material planeand the highest plane, with all planes between, areof identical substance in different rates of vibrationand different degrees of compression.

The plane of matter, so-called,and all higher planesare in truth planes of force. This force resides in mi-roscopicpoints known as corpuscles. The followingfiguresgive an idea of the relative densityof the sevenplanes ; also they hint at the undeveloped possibilitiesof the lower plane. On the seventh human plane, ason the seventh plane of Jupiter,its source, substance isso attenuated that an atom of force contains but one of

these tinycorpuscles. On the sixth plane of man and ofMercury, an atom contains 49 corpuscles. On the fifthplane of man and of Venus, an atom contains a littleover 2,400 corpuscles. On the fourth plane of manand of Saturn, an atom contains not less than 119,600corpuscles. On the third plane of man and of Marsan atom contains about 5,830,600 corpuscles. On thesecond plane of man and of the Moon, an atom con-ains

about 285,700,000 corpuscles ; while on theplane of the physical body and of the earth, an atomcontains about 14,000,000,000 corpuscles.

A long evolution downward from their source hasdeveloped the atoms of man's seventh principle,andmade that principle what it is. While in theory everycorpuscle in man's physical vehicle is capable of anevolution analagous to that of those in his seventh,probably, in the refiningand purifying of the physical,many corpuscles are to be discarded, and in the wiseeconomy of nature, used elsewhere.

It is an open secret of Occultbm that in masteringhis lower self, man masters all within the domain ofthe seven human and planetary principles. Let it beunderstood that the enormous forces compressed inman's lowest vehicle are his whenever he acquires thekey which unlocks them. The key is indicated bythe words harmonious vibration. When the manycorpuscles and atoms of the physical man accord withthe vibrations of the atoms or corpuscles of his seventhprinciple, all power will be won by the unselfishaspirant.

FIRE

THE essential nature of Fire is well known to theoccultist, but because his idea thereof differsradicallyfrom that of the material scientist,he usuallyhas stated in a veiled way what if outspoken wouldexcite opposition and ridicule. Now that the day ofmaterialism is waning and idealism is rising into itsown, certain veils may be removed from one of thegreat central mysteries, that of Fire.

In Gnostic philosophy pure Fire is the summit ofall manifest intelligence. So also in the most arcaneancient teachings pure Fire is the infinite potency ofWill, Desire and Mind born from the concealed Poten-iality.

It is the origin and end of every materialthing. It is divine substance. As known to physicalsense in this immature age of the world. Fire is anigniting,burning and consuming element. And yet thepure Breath or Breaths of the Solar Logos never con-ume,neither do they kindle and burn until in descenttheir Jiva becomes Prana in those globes of the plan-tary

chains which manifest the lower four of the sevenCosmic principles. Definite perception of heat in theSolar Rays begins with the normal evolution of theSaturn chain and culminates with that of the outmostplanet. Not until the pure Solar Flame encountersthe Kamic principle in any of Nature's kingdoms, isreal heat produced. Thus in the first round of ourglobe and even later ere the Kamic element was tosome extent developed. Fire manifested as a cool shin-

Material Science declares the Sun to be a globe ofliquid fire surrounded by a photosphere of glowinggas, outside of which is a corona or atmosphere.However, the Secret Science has much to say con-erning

the ten-fold Sun which Material Science hasnever said.

The Sun's body, the four planes of the Fire thecentral core being the fourth or highest plane is thepure body of the 7 th, 8th, 9th and loth Hierarchies.The outer plane of this body is our Hierarchy, that towhich man's physical principle is evolving. The fourplanes of the Fire contain certain elements not foundin the photosphere and the surrounding atmosphere.These elements, unknown to Material Science, are thedistinguishingones of the highest planes of the SolarLogos.As has been said, when the planets were created,the four great Hierarchies evolved their materialfoundations. Having cooled and solidified like their world, theyare now just beginning to assume the fire-body condi-ion.

During the remaining rounds they must rise tothe condition of the first round. Misunderstanding, orimperfect intuition, or perverted knowledge of all thishas led to belief in the purging power of purgatorialfires. Also, it has stimulated fanatic religioniststothe crime of burning unbelievers that their souls mightbe saved alive.

The outer or lowest plane of the Fire is the sourceof man's physical body, at present his lowest principle.The second, third and fourth planes of the Fire, havingno center of contact in man's body, are unseen andunfelt save by the entities of the globe-chains belowus. The planes of the Fire have auras extendingbeyond the limits of our solar system, and in fact, asfar as the Fire of our Sun, penetrating the so-calledspCk^ialvoid, finds a point of physical contact. Theoutmost undiscovered (?) planet is warmed by thefourth plane of the Fire, the synthesizing Light of ourLogos ; which Light is subordinate to that of greaterLogoi who in turn reflect the Light of the unknowableAbsolute.

In pur present imperfect physical bodies, we neversee the first plane of the Fire, but instead an inade-uate

reflection of the Sun's photosphere, its light-blueAstral body from which emanated the violet Astral orMoon-body of man. The Sun's 5th or highest atmos-here,

the yellow, is the source of man's red Kamicbody. The 4th solar atmosphere, the indigo, is the

FOHAT AND THE ORIGIN OF CYCLES

WHILE the Arcane Science defines not theUnmanifest, it deems That to be the PolarOpposite of every attribute and qualityof the manifest.Thus heat is a leading characteristic of fire as knownto us. This fire derives energy, manifesting as heat,from its Polar Opposite; the crudest fire thereforederives from cold Unmanifest Fire. We characterizethe pure Fire of the Logos as cool Radiance, but thecoolness of purest manifest Fire is not the coolness ofUnmanifest Fire,

What caused Fire first to become manifest? Evi-entlyone of the great Trinity of Primal Principles ;

not Will however for behind Will stands Desire.Desire which in its highest is Divine Love, brings aboutthat manifestation which more and more becomes whatwe sense as heat. Heat, Cosmic Electricity,Fohat, causes motion which, guided by Intelligence,

is circular or rather spiral, the fiery whirlwind ofthe shaping nebula. Hence the beginning of heat andthe beginning of motion are simultaneous.

In that earthly manifestation which closelyconcernsphysical man, Fohat is the warm breath of the Logos

sustaining all physical life. Divine Fire pure fromour Logos, cannot sustain and develop and finallyperfect life on any planet until it takes upon itself thecharacteristics of that planet's life which in certainplanets are largely Kamic. Hence every planet has itsown Fohat emanating from its dominant Solar Hier-rchy.

Although the Solar Rays develop heat whereheat is necessary to life,yet as a planet evolves towardits Divine Source, the Solar Rays more and moreassume their true nature.

While Fohat is the energy of manifest Divine Loveguided by manifest Divine Intelligence and controlledby manifest Divine Will, its activityis not unending,but from one twilight to the other during seven Eter-ities,

in other words, during the great cycle of theobjective Kosmos. Fohatic activityis not measuredby the Kosmic Day, but rather the Kosmic Day isdetermined by the duration of Fohatic energy. TheKosmic clock runs down and time is no more when thePower that turns its innumerable wheels is exhausted.

The life of a Sun or a planet is determined by itstotal of Fohatic energy. The normal life of incarnatedman is determined by the amount of Fohatic energy inhis physical body. The death, or rather the pralaya,of that physical body, like the pralaya of a physicalplanet, is largely due to friction and consequent tem-orary

exhaustion of the material aspect of Fohaticenergy informing it. Thus all life cycles from that ofBrahma to that of the tiniest animalcula, are thoseof Fohatic energy.

The objective life of the animalcula may last for anhour or more, but the cycle of the group-soul of whichit is a manifestation endures as such while the animalkingdom is connected with our globe. The materialaspect of life energy in the animalcula experiencescountless exhaustions known as death, but not totalextinction. By the same law the life of a physicalplanet after long ages experiences pralaya, death'scounterfeit. The physical forces which to man'sknowledge antagonize him in his objective life cycleare many, but those assailants against which his fleshlybody is proof, are vastly more numerous than he isaware of.

The physical life of the animalcula is brief becauseof frictions which soon kill. A physical planet almostdefies time because the friction of all but slow-movingforces but little affect it. The more interior the planethe less friction ; therefore, the higher principles every-here

outlast their lower correspondents; and yetBrahma Himself has His days and nights, and finallyHis finished life. It is friction in some sort, in otherwords, Karmic hindrance the universe being subjectto Karmic Law that sooner or later exhausts Fohaticenergy and causes the enormously varying length ofcycles.

The physical body of the lion seems built to endurefor a century, yet its life-cycles not one-third of man'sallotted years ; but then we know so little concerningthe forces which hurry that body to maturity, and thefrictions which soon exhaust its Fohatic life ; frictions

which man's physical organism little experiences andfrom which such long livers as the elephant and thewhale are even more exempt. Evidently the words adaptation to environment imply far more than thevotaries of physical science imagine.

In the embryonic races of our earlyplanetary rounds,and even in the corresponding human and animal racesof our fourth round, the Kamic element was but littlemanifest, so the units of an entire race were moved bya common impulse and as result the united life-energyof all was shared by every unit. Hence the objectivelife-cycleof each was that of the entire group. Increaseof the Kamic principle gradually brought about self-assertion which divided the race-cycle of objectivelife-energyinto individual cycles, and, as a separatedbundle of sticks is easilybroken, so each separate cyclebecame weak and of short duration. This was aninevitable incident in man's progress from unindivid-ualized unity toward his goal, individualized unitywhere the objective life-cycleof the unit shall again becommensurate with that of the entire human race.

In the third round self-assertion and resulting illusionof separateness originated in the foremost evolution,that of man, and by him was communicated to theanimal races. Again in the third root-race of thefourth round these characteristics became accentuatedin man and so in the animal kingdom which, to thesmallest 'of the infusoria, now revolved in its self-created cycle. Herein is a clue to the origin of allcycles since the dawn of the Kosmic Day. With

Perfect Equilibrium, a distinguishing condition ofthe Un manifest, is Absolute Motion ; and as AbsoluteLight is darkness to man, so to him Absolute Motionis rest. Man has measured the velocity of physicallight, but the Absolute Motion of Absolute Light,making it at once Omnipresent, causes in him theillusionaryidea of rest.

Were it possible to disturb Perfect Equilibrium, thenAbsolute Motion would be degraded to that lower formof energy, manifest motion. Since this cannot be, itfollows that manifest motion is an awakening andrenewal of that energy which at the close of theKosmic Day had become exhausted by friction in somesort. This reappearance of what may be called nega-ive

energy is necessary to the progress of manifestcreation toward frictionless and therefore PerfectEquilibrium. Disturbed equilibrium indicates friction,and as already said, friction causes heat which in turncauses manifest motion which wise beings guide inspiralpaths. Friction therefore is present even on thehighest manifest Kosmic plane, and increases as thelower planes are contacted.

Whether or not the manifest is to attain the Equi-ibriumof the Unmanifest is not determinable since

the latter may have in view an unattained ideal ofEquilibrium, thus vindicating Hegel's conception of becoming in the Absolute Itself.

Eternity,as understood by finite mind, and as viewedby man from the present moment, is beginninglesswhether he look backward or forward. If man's con-

ception of Eternity be true, why has the universe notalready perfected itself even to the most minute atom ?Not having perfected itself in past eternities, whyshould it in eternities to come ? Again, if on the otherhand, that which emanates from the Unmanifest, or as we prefer to state it that which the Unmanifestawakens to activity,be always a new creation, or haswithin it something new, why was not the source ofsupply exhausted in past eternities? To these andkindred questions the Wisdom Religion answers thatman thus far has attained only to perception of three-dimensional space, the illusion, the limitation ofthings, and to perception of but the third aspect oftime, the past, the present and the future, the separate-ness of these. Until he has attained to perception of thesynthesizing dimension of space, also of the synthesiz-ng

aspect of time, such riddles must remain unsolved.OCCULT TIME

THE enormous Fohatic energy in the KosmicLogos or Kosmocratores, those beings whoseHierarchy is the most exalted of all the innumerabledivisions that constitute the universal Whole, deter-ines

the 311,040,000,000,000 years of manifestcreation. The opposite of this supreme cycle is thatof an Astral atom, a cycle of about i- 150th of a second.Those occult divisions of time, the Brahmic years, thefour Yugas, the Daiva years and days, the Pitrya orLunar days and nights and many others, represent thecyclicactivityof their respective hierarchies.

Occultism finds the origin of all timal divisions inthe cyclicactivityof grouped and more or less unifiedentities great and small. Therefore during the uni-ersal

pralaya Time was not, for it lay asleep in theInfinite bosom of Duration. **

For our planet, time is determined by the hierarchiescausing its diurnal and yearly revolution ; but thoughfor it a dominant idea of time exists,that idea like theplanet's dominating color is subject to modificationscorresponding to the planet's seven planes of evolution.Mercury completes his year in about SB of our days ;Neptune in about 164 of our years. Thus is indicateda vastly differing time standard for the two planets.For our solar system as a whole the true idea of timeis with the Logos that from the Center is graduallylifting all lower conceptions. Meanwhile the solarsphere moving in a vast orbit which to the Logosmay be no larger in space, no longer in time than ourplanet's orbit is to us seeks a higher concept of timeand space, for verilysuch knowledge is knowledge ofDeity.

Only at the Unmanifest Supreme Center is fullcomprehension of Divine Space and Divine Timeattained. That comprehension can only be indicated,and by such terms as the Everlasting Here and theEverlasting Now. Eternity in its full sense is a mys-ery

hidden within the bosom of the Unmanifest ;but little man has divided into past, present and futurethe tiny bridge wherewith he would span the abysm ofInfinity.

Still to man'sphysical body space is real, very real, for the horseoutstrips him and the bird flies far above his footsteps.Had the physical body the freedom and alertness ofthe mind, man would be well-nigh Omnipresent in theknown universe ; therefore the mystery of the Everlast-ng

Here would begin to approach solution.With man and in an increasingly marked manner

with the lower kingdoms, the evolution of physical bodyin some ways has outstripped that of mind. As resultthe physical sense of sight and also of touch atteststhe coexistence of length, breadth and thickness, theknown dimensions of space and objects in space ; butman's fully realized mental life is in but one dimensionof time, the present moment. The moment with whichhe has already identified himself he deems behind him,and from thence it recedes to the obscurity of well-nigh

forgotten events. The moment with which he has notyet identified himself man calls the future. As atpresent constituted, the human mind, while perceivingthe three dimensions of time, can focus on but a singleone wherein, as seen by himself, man lives and movesand has his being. Could he enlarge his focus toinclude the preceding moment and that to come hewould live in three-dimensional time, in the unifiedtrinityof the past, the present and the future moment.

The imperfectly focused light, or rather the sidelight which the mind casts upon the preceding momentis known as memory; that cast upon the moment tobe, is known as foresight. Let it be understood thatthose arbitrary time divisions, ** the three moments, are illusionaryaspects of indivisible Eternity and mustbe seen as such ere all enlightenment is attained.Though focused on the present moment the humanmind by no means sees it clearly, and because of thisimperfect vision the operation of Karmic Law becomespossible. The sublime Lords of Karma see allmoments in their correct relation to the Kosmic Day,but not in their relation to the Unmanifest which isabove all divisions of day and night. Therefore, whiledispensing Karma, the Will of the Unmanifest, Theythemselves are under its absolute sway.

By causing the minds of all subordinate beings tofocus on a moment or series of moments of what wecall the past, the Lords of Karma make that past tobecome visualized and so lived over again as thepresent. Thus is afforded a fresh opportunity to learn

the lessons of life. To illustrate : the man who oncestruck at his brother man, struck at the internallyunified brotherhood of man, and so at himself ; hencehis life in the immediate present is filled with anunpleasant but necessary object lesson, in fact withthe higher truth that he himself is injured. This lessonlearned. Justice is satisfied,and its dispensers do notagain compel the mind to that aspect of the moment.

With adequate knowledge of Truth, now hid by themoment that seems to reveal it,all mistakes and delib-rate

wrong-doing become false visions of the oneReality whose vastness shall yet fill the mind and soaccomplish that blotting out of transgressions for whichthe penitent have ever prayed. After this effacementof error, the lesson of imperfect sight and wilfulwrong-doing becomes in the mind of a perfected being,compassionate intuition ; therefore, sounding everydeep, he there labours to lift others to his own vision.

He who knows the manifest universe as he knowshis own view-point, and with the velocity of thoughtcan transfer his subtile and perfected body to everypart thereof, has realized the Here of that universe.He who knows the present moment to its inmost rela-ion

to the great Kosmic Day, and therefore canconnect that moment with all other moments, and byfocusing his faculties can live in any of them, hasrealized the Now of that Day. Nevertheless the motionnecessary to all this requires a minute fraction of time.Absolute Motion necessary to the Everlasting Hereand the Everlasting Now requires no fraction of time

which even the LfOrds of Karma can compute. Still tothe Unmanifest a fraction of what we call time may be

necessary ;hence the reduction or overcoming of that

fraction may be included in that unattained Ideal ofthe Unmanifest already alluded to.

GRAVITATION

To the physicist Gravitation is the name of thatforce which draws all bodies together ; a forceincreasing or decreasing in exact proportion to thesquare of their distance apart. Concerning that forcethe Secret Science has somewhat to say ; so let us, asbrieflyas may be, expound the teaching in regard toGravitation.

In its totalitymanifest creation is a unit, as likewisethe Unmanifest, the Omnipresent, necessarily withinthe inmost of the manifest. The Unmanifest whollyknows its Oneness, whereas the manifest is more orless in the illusion of separateness. The manifest can-ot

of its own accord emerge or attempt to emergefrom illusion into Truth, hence any attempt must origi-ate

in the First Cause, the Unmanifest.Gravitation operative on not only the most evolved

substances, but on the crudest matter as well, is theincessant effort of the Unmanifest to bring about theidea of Oneness in the manifest. In the Unmanifestthat effort results from Perfect Love. In the mostenlightened Hierarchy of the manifest. Gravitation isthe expression of less than Perfect Love, while in the

ment of human sympathy, for, as Buddha and theChrist have taught and exemplified, Love is the trueenlightener of us all.

CONCENTRATION AND THE MOMENT

AS understood and defined by the Occultist, concen-rationis an attempt to devine the essentialTruth, or some approach to that Truth which hides inthe Moment of Eternity, the Everlasting Now. Alsoit is an attempt to stay the ^quick shifting of the mind,thereby demonstrating that the Moment is stable,whereas instabilityis a peculiarityof the mind itself.

Into the Moment all beings are thrusting their deedsand imaginings, but the Moment is undisturbed anduncolored by any of these. In an illusionaryway theMoment seems to belong to the personal man ; there-ore

concentration may show to him his past relationsto it,and to the extent that that past is interwoven withthe past of other men the web becomes revealed.

The human mind in the aggregate being well-nighuniversally unstable, it follows that in passing frommoment to moment of time it acquires the volumeand impetus of a mighty stream against which theone who would hold himself to the timeless Moment isa strong and lone swimmer battling for place. TheMoment, or the three time moments, is a chosen andample subject for concentration both with the highestMasters and with Beings far more exalted. Whateverenlightenment came to Buddha under the Sacred Tree,

could not have exceeded knowledge of the Momentand therefore of the three interiorly unified timemoments. Occultism declares that every single atomin the ocean of being reflects all other atoms; anda single Moment of Eternity elucidates all timemoments.

It would seem the Will of the Absolute that everybeing obtain more and more interior knowledge of theMoment, and that Karmic adjustment be the means.Figuratively speaking the Absolute would draw allbeings in a direct line to the inmost realityof theMoment, but limited and therefore negative will, notrealizing its essential oneness with Absolute Will,opposes that method and the result is spiralapproach.The three days* journey of the Israelites which theirfrowardness lengthened to fortyyears in the wilderness,well illustrates this. The innumerable and illusionarytime moments of the manifested universe representindirect approach to what a perfected being couldattain in a Moment of Eternity. A most narrow ideaof the Moment is that of the electrons in their infini-esimal

orbits. In our solar system the Sun representsthe largest idea of the Moment which all planetsapproach in spiral path. In Kosmos a grander, farmore interior aspect of the Moment is represented bythe Center around which the Sun turns in mighty orbit.The orbits of all Stars are determined by the more orless interior perception of the Moment attained bytheir guiding Hierarchies.

KARMA

ACCORDINGto the Ancient Wisdom, the highestconceivable Beings with their conditioned pow-rshave created in finite time and space this conditioned

universe, the imperfect copy of That '* the Uncondi-ioned.Furthermore, every entity in descending rank

has imitated in cruder and cruder way somewhat of theoriginal imitation.

Karma is the mainspring of that Kosmic process,that evolution which leads all creatures through theseries of imitations to the primal imitation, and perhapsto the Archetype Itself. All- adjusting and infinitely-adaptable Karmic Law begins with the first motion ofthe spiral nebula, and is administered by those spon-

.sor-guides, the hosts of the Logos of the Solar Systemyet to be. Karma makes only the most general demandson the lower kingdoms of planetary life ; demands whosefulfilment is left to the sponsor-guides of those king-oms.

In the animal kingdom, there much below theplane of individual responsibility,retributive Karmaoperates on the group-soul of a species since the group-soul's intelligencemuch exceeds that of any of its output.

On the plane of man, that of self-conscious person-lity,the entity finds Karma more and more definitely

discriminating and requiring ; but though the outgrownright of to-day shall become the wrong of to-morrow,Karmic requirements are not unduly in advance ofattained standards. Progress and attained perfectionthrough Karmic adjustment would be impossible were

not the Infinite at the base of all manifested being.The Infinite apprehensible only in its Modification,Ishwara or the Christos, is in the heart of every Sun,every planet and every creature and atom. Therecooperating with Karma it becomes an interior urgeto things higher and yet higher.

For humanity the one purpose of Karmic adjust-entis union with the Solar Logos. That end

consummated, the Infinite Ideal reveals a requirementfar off as the Star around which our Sun revolves.That Star attained, what then ? Surely the discoverythat the Ideal not yet realized,though more fully mani-ested

by the Central Sun, abides in the EverlastingHere, co-existent with the Infinite Moment, thatultimate division of time, the knowledge of which isknowledge of Karma.

On the lower steps of the seven stairways of theworld all life is forced to climb by what human ignor-nce

arrogantly denounces as a cruel, arbitrary andgodless law ; but to man at his best, exacting Karmais seen as Love masked in iron. Well up the far-winding spiral, one by one every disguise falls awaytill, on the Ineffable Summit, Divine Compassionawaits him who nevermore is urged save by his ownenamoured heart.
