I Found A 16th-Century Occult Magic

Book Full Of Beauty Advice

-Tiye-

Last weekend, my brother and I were summoned to sort through the arti-facts, untouched for over a decade, of my family’s storage space: hours of embarrassing pictures, nostalgia-inducing baby books, and A-for-effort school projects.

Amongst the rubble was my parents’ library of books of varied and strange subject matter; some antiques, mostly on the subjects of sexual studies, the history of religion, and the occult, all of which my parents both studied over the years. One book caught my eye in particular: the book of Natural Magick.

Natural Magick’s roots are in alchemy, a speculative science that attempted to transform base metals into gold and make healing potions and com-pounds. Alchemists sought out inner health and immortality by ingesting and dispensing alchemical solutions.

Page 7: Arcane Magazine Art 424

7

Giambattista and other members of the Otiosi report their scientific findings of counterfeiting gold in Natural Magick and in other books such as Of the Production of New Plants, Of Artificial Fires, and, most important for our purposes, Of Beautifying Women.

Some of the tips found in Of Beauti-fying Women include how to whiten your skin using lead paint, how to brew your own lye and use it as the base for your chosen hair dye, and how to use depilatories on your scalp to get a stronger part in your hair “because sometimes the part is deformed with abundance of hair.” Right.

We all know to avoid lead paint these days, but many women still use products with lye, most nota-bly hair relaxers, despite the risk of permanent tissue damage (and worse). Lye can also be found in modern-day oven cleaners and drain uncloggers, so always check your labels.

As for using depilatories on my head, which would involve decom-posing a salamander in water and using its vomit, I think I’ll pass. Salamander vomit is mentioned sev-eral times, so it was definitely the method of choice for 16th-century hair removal.

Not shockingly, Chapter 6 begins with how “to take away sores and worms that spoil the hair.” It has some great advice about using flower-infused vinegar (in this day and age, I use apple cider vinegar and lavender water as a weekly hair rinse), but if all else fails, Giambat-tista writes, “I used very hot bread, newly taken forth of the oven, cut in the middle, and putting the hair between them till they grow cold.”

I want to say that our idea of beauty has evolved over the last 500 years because many of these tips are laughable, but the truth is most beauty magazines these days of-fer the same advice on how to dye, soften and curl hair

Some of the most thorough advice in Natural Magick is the techniques used to whiten the skin. Not only was a white complexion preferred, but it was seen as a better base for applying other colors to the face.

The portrait of ideal beauty has evolved over time almost in a simi-lar way that science has evolved. We still have groups of scholars and scientists conducting experiments every day, and reporting findings in various published journals while beauty advice has exploded into a cult of its own.

“Lucy” : A Movie About Luciferian Philosophy

by VC

Lucy is a science fiction movie thatcombines profound existential questions with a bunch of action scenes involving Asian gangsters. While this dichotomy wasn’t well received by critics, there is an esoteric message hiding behind it all. Lucy is indeed more than a movie in which Scarlett Johanson being a “bad-ass” – it is an allegorical tale celebrating the philosophy of the elite : Luciferianism.

Luciferianism is a belief system thatincludes both theistic and atheistic denominations and is, therefore, heavily influenced by personal perspectives and experiences. Considered by many to be a religion and by some to be a philosophy or way of life, Luciferianism as a whole has no specific dogma to which its “followers” adhere. Rather, it is a deeply personal outlook withnumerous variations ranging from the veneration of a literal deity and the practice of occultism to a secular set of principles, using mythological references as a form of symbolism and cultural tradition.

Page 10: Arcane Magazine Art 424

10

The fact that the main character is named Lucy is the first clue hinting towards the philosophical basis of the movie. The name Lucy and Lucifer both derive from the Latin word “lux” which means “light”. Lucifer means “light bringer” in Latin, and is considered by Luciferians to have brought divine knowledge (light) to humans after be-ing cast out of heaven by God. In Lu-ciferian circles, Lucifer is perceived as a “savior” who gave humans the knowl-edge necessary to ascend to divinity. In the movie, Lucy is a human version of Lucifer, as her increased brain capacity allows her to gain the knowledge re-quired to become a god.

Luciferianism is about humans reaching divinity through human means. This philosophy is symbolically represented with two mythical figures who bear similar characteristics: Pro-metheus and Lucifer. Both of these figures are considered by some circles to be benefactors of humanity as they brought fire and light (representing divine knowledge) to struggling hu-mans. They gave mankind the means to become gods themselves, through their own means.

From this perspective, Luciferians in-terpret Biblical tales from a unique vantage point. In Genesis, Luciferians consider the snake who gave Eve the forbidden apple to be a hero, as he is

the one who brought humanity knowl-edge of good, evil and everything in between. The story of the tower of Babel, a human construction meant to reach God in the sky is viewed fa-vorably by Luciferians as it represents humanity’s struggle to reach divinity; the building of this immense tower was, however, stopped by God who is perceived as a jealous demiurge who trapped humans in the physical world.

In the 20th century, a high-tech version of this philosophy appeared as transhumanism, a movement that seeks the use of science and robotics to push humanity to another stage of devel-opment. Transhumanism’s admitted ultimate goal is the total merging of humans and robots. While most people who agree with transhumanism prob-ably do not know much about Lucife-rianism, one of its “founding fathers” clearly sees the connection.

Page 11: Arcane Magazine Art 424

11

The British philosopher Max More (BELOW) first articulated the principles of transhumanism as a futurist philoso-phy in 1990 and started a worldwide intelligencia to promote it. One of his essays, entitled “In Praise of the Devil” goes deep in theological territory to connect transhumanism with Luciferi-anism.

What does this all have to do with Lucy? Well, Lucy is about humanity reach-ing divinity through knowledge, about using science and technology to break “biological barriers”.

Although all of this might sound positive, there is a troubling, dark side to it all: Only a select few can be “illuminated” by the light of Lucifer. The rest of human-ity is perceived as a lesser race with lives of no value. For this reason, Lucy remorse-lessly kills a bunch of people, including many innocents. This is what Luciferian thought is truly about.

Lucy was bashed by critics for being somewhat nonsensical – but being “sensical” was not the point of this movie. It is a treatise for Luciferian philosophy, and it can only be fully “ap-preciated” by those who understand this philosophy. For those who don’t, well, there’s a bunch of action scenes peppered throughout to keep them entertained. Meanwhile, they absorb the occult meaning of the movie with-out even realizing what’s happening. These action scenes were meant to be in sharp contrast with the Lucy’s quest for knowledge because Luciferians per-ceive a sharp contrast between them and the masses. While Lucy’s busy achieving immortality and turning into a god, a bunch of clueless guys kill each other for no good reason. And nobody cares. Because their lives are considered worthless.

Therefore, beyond the nonsen-sical premise of Lucy, there is a very “sensical” message, one that is as powerful as it is disturbing: There are two classes of humans on Earth and transhumanism will widen the gap be-tween them. Most of the projects in-volving transhumanism have been described by observers as “playing God”. But this is not simply an expression: It is exactly what Luciferians are about.

tHE tHREE TYPES OF OCCULT

Divination

Seeking hidden knowledge, of-ten knowledge about the future through psychic readings and vari-ous supernatural means. The guide refers to divination tools as “props” that are used in astrology, tarot cards, palm reading, scrying with tea leaves or crystal balls and

other ancient divination tools.

Spiritism

The belief that the living can com-municate with the spirits of those

who have died. This is done through the individual’s own powers. Trance mediums, channeling and séances are three ways that mediums can contact the dead. This in an ancient form of occultism found in Greek, Egyptian, and Roman and other cultures. It has remained through modern times. Spiritualism was very prominent dur-ing the popularity of séances in the

mid-1800s through the 1920s.

Paganism

Referred to as “neo-paganism” to distinguish the growing revival that started in the 19th century of these ancient forms of worship. The 1960s saw another revival of these practices that include ani-mism, the belief that living things contain living spirits. This religion worships ancient deities with the frontrunner being Mother Goddess

or Mother Earth (Gaia).

chakra healing: the power of

stonesChakras are energy vortices that exist within the etheric body and transmit life force energy to the body. Each chakra governs specific bodily functions of the organs in the body close to the area where they are located. Although we normally speak of only seven chakras, the human energy field is made up of thousands of minor chakras in addition to the major seven. All of the chakras have specific colors that can be used to heal them, as well as specific sound vibrations.

Chakra stones are healing crystals that have a specific vibration and color. There are many stones for each chakra and various crystals may be particularly powerful to aid you to heal in different ways. Al-though certain colors are commonly thought to heal certain chakras, some stones do not fit the pattern. Clear crystals, black, brown and various mixed color crystals have a healing effect on a few different chakras. Other stones that heal more than one chakras are those with flecks through them such as agates.

The lower chakras such as the base chakra and the earth star chakra... which is below the feet ... respond to the black and brown crystals. These darker crystals have a stronger spiri-tual grounding ability. Often stones of a particular color that is a mixture of the two chakra colors, will heal both of the chakras.

Light yellow-green stones and crystals are good examples... as they heal both the solar plexus chakra... because of the yellow tones in the stones and the heart chakra... because of the green. Examples of stones that are this color include Peridot, Green Chrysoprase, Green Prehnite and Light Green Hid-denite... pictured below.

Chakras from the heart up are very closely associated with the spiritual area within the etheric body, and may be healed by high vibration stones. These stones that have high vibration with strong crystal energy are power-ful for making dramatic changes in those chakras.

Spiritual grounding is an important activity for anyone who is working on developing their psychic abilities... as using high crystal energy stones... such as crown chakra stones or soul star chakra stones may make you un-grounded.

Medic & Flora: the beauty oF the

silent soul by aaron berger

Eerie and dark staged photography from Jennifer Hudson. She recently finished Medic, a series of photos exploring the breadth of human relation-ships during illness and recovery. Really dig the

compositions with these and the cold sepia tone. The emotional content of each piece comes through really strongly even though her sensibility is slight-

ly on the quiet side. A nice example of affective work that doesn’t need to hit you on the head to

fully come across.
