SPECIAL SHIPSSMART SOLUTIONS

NEW CRUISE MARKET OPPORTUNITIES ROTTERDAM MARITIME CAPITAL OF EUROPE EUROPEAN TUGOWNERS JOIN HANDS

Strong upturn in a significant number of the sector-specific markets for which Europort is renowned suggest that stakeholders should block out November 5-8 2019 for a trip to the Ahoy Centre, Rotterdam for the only event dedicated to specialised ships.

Raymond Siliakus, Exhibition Manager, says, “Special purpose ships offer unique opportunities, but converting them demands deep market insight and the smart solutions that drive efficiency.

Europort’s unique value proposition is its exhaustive coverage of a broad range of special ships, including naval vessels, offshore support crafts, fishing boats, short sea ships, cruise vessels and ferries, all of which need smart technologies and people to enable return on investment.”

One sector proving robust is the superyacht market, which analyst Coherent Market Insights says will

be worth US$35.5 billion by 2026 (2017 - $22.5 billion). Given that Dutch shipyards and suppliers command 30% of the global market, Europort is a natural sector hub that draws worldwide clients, with exhibitors therefore understandably including design and technology innovators from Italy and Turkey.

High profile river cruising, meanwhile, is contributing strongly to growth in the inland waterways market, with cruise traffic on the Rhine growing by 128% over the period 2002-2017, according to inland association CCNR. As home to Europe’s largest fleet of inland vessels, expertise

from the Netherlands will be widely on display at the Europort 2019 exhibition, with trade association Royal BLN-Schuttevaer holding its annual conference on inland shipping on November 8th.

Workboats and dredgers remain prominent at Europort. Once again, the CEDA Dredging Days events will held in conjunction with Europort, drawing all main market players to Rotterdam. Similarly, Europort is a must for tug builders and equipment suppliers, and this year shows why, as the European Tugowners Association (ETA) stages their second Autumn conference in parallel with Europort 2019 on November 7th.

“Special purpose ships offer unique opportunities, but converting them demands

deep market insight and the smart solutions that drive efficiency.”

THE SPOTLIGHT IS ON FOR SPECIAL PURPOSE VESSELS

Page 2: SPECIAL SHIPS€¦ · cruise ship for SeaDream Yacht Club, to be built to Polar Code 6 standards. Then, in April, A-Rosa signed a contract with Concordia Damen to build a 135m river

A recent survey by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) found that global cruise guest numbers exceeded 28.5 million in 2018, 7% above 2017. But, while global trends are heavily influenced by China, demand in the Netherlands has emerged as a trend in its own right: 113,000 nationals took a cruise in 2018, 2.2% up on 2017. Over 40% of Dutch guests were under 40.

Paul Nuyens, CLIA Manager for the Netherlands, Belgium and France, comments: “The figures show that a cruise vacation is working for an increasingly wider audience, such as families with children and young people. It is not surprising that a growing number of ships are being built with this target group in mind.”

Given its focus on specialized ships, it is also no surprise that Europort participants are homing in on opportunities being created by booming

expedition ship and river cruising niches, where European guest demand is especially vibrant.

Last year shipbuilder Damen formed a separate Damen Cruise entity and, by March 2019, had announced a contract for a 155m, ultra-luxury cruise ship for SeaDream Yacht Club, to be built to Polar Code 6 standards. Then, in April, A-Rosa signed a contract with Concordia Damen to build a 135m river cruise vessel. To meet Damen’s cruise and river cruise specialists at Europort 2019, visit the Damen Shipyards and Concordia Damen booths.

Other Europort participants with a keen interest in this specialised cruise segment include: ABB, whose Azipod propulsors feature in over 20 expedition ship projects; Wärtsilä, which recently won orders to supply 60-plus transverse thrusters for 12 cruise ships building at six shipyards; Evac, highlighting its Evac Evolution ballast water

management system; and Bolidt, which will offer insights into its innovative cruise ship decking and flooring solutions.

In addition, one of Europort’s famed Masterclass sessions this year focuses on the cruise and ferry sector. On Friday 8th November visitors can hear perspectives on challenges and solutions for the segment’s continuous quest to enhance sustainability.

Europort exhibition manager, Raymond Siliakus, concludes: “Europort 2019 will provide a single location for owners and operators to engage with the full range of specialists needed to meet design, construction, technology, safety and environmental performance needs in an increasingly product-differentiated cruise market.”

With demand for the cruise vacation reaching an all-time high in 2018, trends and technologies in this globally fast-growing sector will be a natural area of focus during Europort 2019 at Rotterdam’s Ahoy Centre November 5th-8th.

Johan Rostin, Chief Executive of ForSea Ferries, says sustainable

shipping brings commercial as well as reputational rewards.

A brand new option has been added to the menu at Europort, in the shape of a special ‘Underwater Works Pavilion’.

The new addition provides a special area for visitors to focus on the sometimes dangerous and always challenging tasks undertaken by diving, inspection and salvage companies, plus the service providers, manufacturers, designers and materials suppliers supporting these high pressure activities.

As well as sharpening focus on the tools used for cutting, welding and other manual labour processes, Europort 2019 will also offer visitors the chance to update themselves on the drones, ROVs and digital technology that are redefining this highly-skilled sector.

The special pavilion even features its own large dive tank so that exhibitors can do product demonstrations.

UNDERWATER WORKS ATTRACTIONS

The cruise and ferry sectors are at the forefront of shipping’s drive towards greater sustainability. Zero emission battery power is already becoming a commercial reality, as a propulsion solution over short distances or as auxiliary power to boost ship efficiency, while the power capacity available to fuel cells using hydrogen is also on the rise.

Few shipping companies have embarked on their ‘Green Journey’ with more commitment than Sweden’s ForSea Ferries. Since last November batteries have been powering its ferries Tycho Brahe and Aurora between Helsingborg and Helsingør, making the 20 minute crossing the first intensive operation of its kind in the world. ForSea even charges its batteries from renewable sources.

“In Scandinavia people are passionate about environmental protection,” says ForSea Ferries Johan Rostin. “They want action and not just talk.”

The appetite for sustainability is also a feature of the fast-growing expedition cruise market, where guests seeking to explore the remote wonders of nature prefer to do so onboard environmentally responsible ships. Sustainable technologies are central to ‘smart shipping’ - one of the key themes at Europort 2019. In fact, this year’s event even includes a special

‘Reducing the carbon footprint of ferries and cruise ships’ Masterclass, scheduled for Friday 8th November. Rostin, says ForSea’s ‘green journey’ has already passed some significant milestones, “Over the first quarter of this year our bunker fuel consumption was halved compared to Q1 2018, saving around 4,500 tons of CO2 in just three months. Our workforce also tell us they really feel the reduction in vibration levels onboard, and it is much quieter - for passengers and crew, and for residents living close to the ports.”

It is a journey that can also have other welcome benefits, adds Rostin. “As we approach the busy summer months our passenger bookings are increasing. More people want to travel on our ferries simply because they are battery powered.”

New generation maritime professionals are invited to join the #YoungEuroport programme at Europort 2019, to become part of a unique knowledge-sharing platform offering opportunities to network with peers and gain access to some of the leading figures in the industry.

Europort adds an important new programme partner, following the decision of the European Tugowners Association (ETA) to hold its second Autumn conference to run alongside the Rotterdam event. The special conference will take place on November 7th and its focus is in full alignment with Europort’s Smart Business theme.

The event will focus on current practices in the tug sector and investigate the business models that are most likely to bring future success. The conference will also review approaches taken in other maritime sectors, to see what lessons can be learned.

The new addition consolidates Europort’s position as a key show for workboats, a sector covered by the event since its inception, also strengthening an already packed programme comprising several returning conferences and events. These include CEDA Dredging Days, Europort Masterclasses,

RINA Marine Industry 4.0, MareForum and MariMatch.
