At the top of our list in upcoming theater offerings? An array of world and local debuts.Three won kudos in London and New York: “The Seafarer,” a study of fraying male friendships by Irish

dramatist Conor McPherson (at Seattle Repertory Theatre); “The History Boys,” Alan Bennett’s take on ambitious English schoolboys and their eccentric teacher (at ArtsWest); and Peter Morgan’s play “Frost/Nixon,” a keen look backstage at former President Nixon’s momentous TV interview with talk-showhost David Frost. (“Frost/Nixon,” coming to the Paramount Theatre, beats the Oscar-nominated movie version in sheer immediacy.)

Book-It Repertory Theatre unveils “The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears,” a new work based on DinawMengestu’s novel about an Ethiopian immigrant finding his way in America.

For celebrity hounds, Carrie Fisher bares all in her solo memoir “Wishful Drinking” (at Seattle Rep). And ACT and Intiman theaters open their 2009 seasons with fresh treatments of some superbly dark,

classic fiction: “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” (at ACT) and “Crime and Punishment” (at Intiman). Misha Berson, Seattle Times theater critic

If spring’s almost here, you know one thing: Major pop- and rock-music concerts are on their way. The hottest pop ticket has to be Britney Spears. After her much-publicized meltdown and comeback, she’s returning with a full

arena tour, playing the Tacoma Dome on April 9. Continuing the pop trip, Lady GaGa is touring, too, singing in Seattle at theShowbox at the Market on March 16.

In the hip-hop vein, the Blue Scholars and Common Market rap for three nights at Neumo’s mid-March. Another show not to missis Estelle. The singer — Kanye West’s muse on the single “American Boy” — sings at the Showbox at the Market on March 2. Later, indie icon DJ Peanut Butter Wolf spins at Chop Suey on April 25.

For those hoping to make Mom all giddy, Barry Manilow is performing at a special benefit for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation onMarch 15 at the Comcast Arena in Everett. Another idol of a similar era, Rick Springfield, plays the Emerald Queen Casino on April24.

If Christian rock is your thing, mark your calendar for March 19. That’s when MercyMe, Jeremy Camp and Hawk Nelson — allfavorites in Christian contemporary — play KeyArena. Another popular singer, Chris Tomlin, is scheduled to perform the newShoWare Center in Kent on March 8.

DANCE |

It’s spring (well, almost) and time to dance, be it classic or contemporary. Pacific Northwest Ballet (PNB) presents Kent Stowell’s “SwanLake” in April, complete with Tchaikovsky and rows of white tutus, and the Mark Morris Dance Group returns to the Paramount in Maywith “Mozart Dances,” an evening of work accompanied by the Seattle Symphony’s musicians. For something jazzier, PNB’s BroadwayFestival features Jerome Robbins’ “West Side Story Suite” and Susan Stroman’s “Take Five”; for drama, Spectrum Dance Theaterreprises Donald Byrd’s “The Theater of Needless Talents” and “Interrupted Narratives/War.”
