As the chairs for the SC12 Technical Papers, wewere surprised and delighted to have the highest num-ber of technical paper submissions ever to the SC con-ference series. Authors submitted 472 paper for re-view, and the 175 member program committee ac-cepted 100 of these papers for presentation during theconference – an acceptance rate of 21%.
From these 100 papers, the committee also nomi-nated exceptional papers as finalists for Best Paper andBest Student Paper, numbering six and nine papers, re-spectively, with two papers in both categories. The au-thors of several of these finalist papers were offered theopportunity to publish extended versions of their pa-pers in this special issue; ten authors accepted.
Here, we provide a brief introduction to these tenpapers.
“Compiler-directed file layout optimization for hi-erarchical storage systems” by Wei Ding, YuanruiZhang, Mahmut Kandemir and Seung Woo Son. Thispaper describes a new perspective on optimizing filelayouts for hierarchical storage caches using compiler-driven analysis. The fully automated method showsimprovements on 16 I/O intensive workloads, increas-ing performance by 23.7% on average.
“Efficient and reliable network tomography in het-erogeneous networks using BitTorrent broadcasts andclustering algorithms” by Kiril Dichev, Fergal Reidand Alexey Lastovetsky. This paper describes a newsolution to the problem of managing end-to-end band-width in BitTorrent-style data transfers. Their method

counts the fragments exchanged during a broadcast, and then uses this information to reconstruct logicalclusters of nodes, and any bottlenecks between the log-ical clusters.
“A divide and conquer strategy for scaling weathersimulations with multiple regions of interest” by PreetiMalakar, Thomas George, Sameer Kumar, RashmiMittal, Vijay Natarajan, Yogish Sabharwal, VaibhavSaxena and Sathish S. Vadhiyar. In this paper, the au-thors describe their efforts to improve the performanceof nested simulations for weather predictions. Theseefforts use performance prediction in order to helpdrive processor allocation and topology-aware map-ping onto Blue Gene system, with results improvingperformance up to 33%.
“MPI runtime error detection with MUST: Ad-vances in deadlock detection” by Tobias Hilbrich,Joachim Protze, Martin Schulz, Bronis R. de Supin-ski and Matthias S. Müller. This manuscript presentsimprovements to the Marmot Umpire Scalable Tool(MUST) that detects errors in MPI applications. Theimprovements include higher tool scaling, testing newMPI constructs, and handling more complex real-world applications.
“Characterizing and mitigating work time inflationin task parallel programs” by Stephen L. Olivier,Bronis R. de Supinski, Martin Schulz and Jan F. Prins. This paper describes an examination of several prob-lems causing poor performance in task parallel pro-grams. In an attempt to improve performance, the pa-per proposes a locality framework for OpenMP, whichshows an 3X performance improvement, when com-pared to Intel OpenMP task scheduler.

“Direction-optimizing breadth-first search” by ScottBeamer, Krste Asanovic and David Patterson. In thispaper, the authors present a new, hybrid top-down,bottom-up algorithm for performing breadth-firstsearch effectively over low-diameter and scale freegraphs.
“McrEngine: A scalable checkpointing system usingdata-aware aggregation and compression” by TanzimaZerin Islam, Kathryn Mohror, Saurabh Bagch, AdamMoody, Bronis R. de Supinski and Rudolf Eigenmann. This paper describes a scalable checkpoint-restart sys-tem, mcrEngine, that uses data aggregation and com-pression to reduce overheads by up to 87% and com-pressibility up to 115%.
“Efficient backprojection-based synthetic apertureradar computation with many-core processors” byJongsoo Park, Ping Tak Peter Tang, Mikhail Smelyan-skiy, Daehyun Kim and Thomas Benson. This paperdescribe an important image reconstruction method, synthetic aperture radar via backprojection, and thetechniques that they used to port it to a Intel KnightsCorner manycore platform. The optimizations include
strength reduction, locality enhancements, and expos-ing parallelism at the thread and instruction level.
“A framework for low-communication 1-D FFT” byPing Tak Peter Tang, Jongsoo Park, Daehyun Kim andVladimir Petrov. The authors introduce a new algo-rithm for a distributed 1-D FFT, where communica-tion costs are reduced. The implementation on large-scale problems can be as twice as fast as leading FFTlibraries.
“Containment domains: A scalable, efficient andflexible resilience scheme for exascale systems” byJinsuk Chung, Ikhwan Lee, Michael Sullivan, Jee HoRyoo, Dong Wan Kim, Doe Hyun Yoony, Larry Ka-planz and Mattan Erez. In this paper, the authors de-scribe and evaluate the concept of containment do-mains, which is a programming construct that allowsapplications to express resiliency requirements to theunderlying programming system. The evaluation ofcontainment domains shows that it is superior to bothcheckpoint restart and redundant execution techniques.
