Motivation
Over the past few years, there has been increasinginterest in studying the management of operationsrunwith not for profit incentives. In the area of Produc-tion and Operations Management (POM), the appliedareas that have captured more attention related to thistype of operations are humanitarian disaster manage-ment and global health care, but not for profit opera-tions appear in multiple other applied settings such aseducation, community services, public services, andeven some activities run by for-profit organizations. The study of Not for Profit Operations Managementis
an emerging and important research area that isunderserved by POM scholars. Much of the existingliterature is scant and consists ofthe study of specificcases but a large number of operational issues forthese cases are recurrent in different not for profitsettings. This special issue aims to collect work fromdifferent applied areas and motivate scholars todevelop theoretical models in the realm of Not forProfit Operations Management. The standard POM toolsdeveloped to address for-profit operations are notalways the best fit to address not for profit operations. For this reason there is a need to build theory bydeveloping analytical and empirical models tailoredto this type of operations. Moreover, novel POM the-ory needs to be developed to address issues exclu-sively pertinent to this area such as the managementof donations, the design of fundraising mechanisms, and the study of the fund allocation problem.
Scope and Topics
With this special issue we encourage POM research-ers to develop rigorous and relevant analytical andempirical research in this emerging fieldof study. We
seek high-quality research that contributes to shapevia theoretical, empirical and behavioral insights thearea of Not for Profit Operations Management. The top-ics of interest to the special issue include but are notlimited to:
Pricing Inventory Procurement and supplier selection Logistics Funds allocation Performance measures Donor problem of monitoring and bench-
marking recipients’ performance Coordination issues between different recipi-
ent organizations Coordination issues between different donors Donor-recipient relationship The design of fundraising mechanisms The management of donations (earmarked
donations, gifts-in-kind, voluntary labor)
