1 The long-awaited South Ken Kids Festival is back at the Institut français for its 16 th edition from 18 to 24 November! But who says the Festival is only for South Ken? The long-awaited South Ken Kids Festival is back at the Institut français for its 16th edition from 18 to 24 November! But who says the Festival is only for South Ken? Last year, we worked with more than 30 schools all over London, from nursery to secondary, and we’re hoping this number will keep increasing… Our hallmark lies in providing children with unforgettable experiences through:

Workshops with renown artists in their classroom (this year’s line-up includes Nicholas Allan, Marion Billet, Roland Garrigue, Debi Gliori, Mathieu Sapin, Cendrine Wolf & Anne Plichota, and many more)

Events at the Institut français (meetings with the artists, free films screenings…)

A nationwide competition with a chance to win amazing prizes (see form attached). And now that our programme spans over a whole week, you’ll find opportunities galore to treat your pupils to a fun and educational activity... So wait no more, and register now!

Registration Deadlines

Thursday 3 October 2013: Please send us your choice of workshops at schools and/or activities at the Institut français. You can do so by filling out the booking form (one per school) provided for that purpose and send it to Thuy An To at [email protected] This procedure is mandatory as no request will be taken into account if the form isn’t completed.

Thursday 10 October 2013: Results are sent back to you (taking into consideration each school’s request).

Option 1: Artists coming to YOUR school!

The artists can visit your school from Monday 18 November to Friday 22 November. They will run 2 workshops per half-day. For example, they can run two workshops in the morning or two workshops in the afternoon.

Each workshop will be limited to 25/30 children.

The artists will be paid directly by the schools in which they are working, in accordance with the tariff for artists of children’s books (£195 (250€) for half-a-day)

If the artists don’t have time to sign their books after the workshop, children can go with their parents to the Institut during the weekend: book signing slots have been pencilled for each artist. The artist may need a snack/lunch. If so, schools will be told in advance.

Marion Billet has illustrated over 120 children’s books, using all sorts of media and combining touch-and-feel elements with sounds. Her books are must-haves for the little ones… Workshop at your school: How do you create a book from scratch? Marion will tell the children everything about it with her book Litteland. In addition, they will get to create their own double-deckers, inspired by Whizzy Wheels: London Bus!

Nicholas Allan is the artist behind the oh-so-cheeky The Queen’s Knickers and Father Christmas Need a Wee, and his work has been translated in over 20 languages.

Workshop at your school: Children will be introduced to Nicholas Allan’s universe through magic tricks, interactive drawing and storytelling. They will also create their own knickers and decorate them. Claudia Boldt wears several hats – she is a successful author and illustrator, cofounder of Bolt editions, and publisher of ‘The Loop’, a trendy kids magazine. Workshop at your school: Claudia will start by reading Melvin to the children and talk about the characters and the setting of the story. This hands-on workshop, mixing together drawing, paper folding and creativity, will lead everyone to work together and produce a book with the help of Claudia! Ages: Year 3 – Year 5 / CE1 – CM1 Language: English

London-based Lucille Clerc is part of the avant-garde of contemporary illustration. She is the author of Flip Fashion and has worked extensively in editorial design and illustration. Workshop at your school: Based on Lucille’s Knock Knock Knock and Walls Can See prints series, this workshop will help the children to design and craft their very own 3D buildings. A fun way to mix and match different features, buildings and cultures! Ages: Year 2 – Year 4 / CP – CE2 Language: French and English

Talented playwright, writer of Les P’tites Poules, and best friends with Christian Heinrich, Christian Jolibois has a few tricks up his sleeve... Workshop at your school: Christian will initiate the children to the art of writing by creating stories and drafting comic book plotlines with them. Ages: CE1 – CM1 / Year 3 – Year 5 Workshop duration: 1 hour Equipment needed: One flip chart, paper sheets, and pencils Availability: - Thursday 21 November (afternoon) - Friday 22 November (morning) Book displayed: If possible, the children should have read one of Les P’tites Poules books beforehand.

Scottish superstar Debi Gliori is the award-winning artist of No Matter What, The Trouble With Dragons and many more exciting books. Workshop at your school: The children will discover Debi’s secrets: where do her ideas come from? How do her characters come along with the pictures that make a story? Debi will also draw with the kids, step by step, so get your pencils ready!

Roland Garrigue

Meet the great defeater of your worst nightmares! Roland Garrigue has won critical acclaim for his illustrations of the uproarious picture book series which includes How to Outwit Witches and How to Demolish Dinosaurs.

Christian Heinrich

Equally at ease as a teacher and as an illustrator, Christian Heinrich is the co-creator – along with Christian Jolibois – of the hilarious series Les P’tites Poules.

Language: French and English (Christian’s English is not perfect, please let us know if there’s a French speaker available in your school to help him out!) Workshop duration: 1 hour to 1h30 Equipment needed: One flip chart, markers, and paper sheets Availability: - Thursday 21 November (afternoon) - Friday 22 November (morning) Book displayed: Children will ideally have read one of Les P’tites Poules’ books beforehand (they may prepare some questions for example).

Ben Newman

Equipment needed: One flipchart, black markers, A4 paper, pencils, coloured pencils or pencils. Please let us know if there’s a projector so that the talk can be accompanied by projected images. Availability: - Monday 18 November (morning/afternoon) - Tuesday 19 November (morning/afternoon)

Ben Newman has created his own recognisable style involving bright colours and graphic shapes, and his forthcoming book Professor Astro Cat’s Frontiers of Space is being released in October. Workshop at your school: Children will discover how an illustrated book is made based on Professor Astro Cat’s cosmic universe. They will get to design new extraordinary characters with the help of Ben. Finally, the curious minds will be fully satisfied as Ben will answer any question kids may have. Ages: Year 3 – Year 6 / CE1 – CM2 Language: English Workshop duration: 1 hour

Workshop at your school: Christian expects some hands to be raised as he’ll happily answer the children’s question, and he’ll also draw with them! At the end of this workshop, kids will know everything about how characters come to life and how to create a story. Ages: CE1 – CM1 / Year 3 – Year 5

Book displayed: Professor Astro Cat’s Frontiers of Space is published early October by Flying Eye Book. Children don’t have to read the book beforehand – but it might help.

Mathieu Sapin is the illustrator of the tongue-in-cheek series Akissi and has recently claimed the spotlight with his comic book adaptation of Les Malheurs de Sophie. Workshop at your school: Mathieu will help the children imagine the sequel of one Akissi’s story and put it down on paper. Ages: Year 3 – Year 6 / CE1 – CM2 Language: French and English (Mathieu’s English is not perfect, please let us know if there’s a French speaker available in your school to help him out!) Workshop duration: 1 hour – 1h30 Equipment needed: A4 paper, pencils, black felt pens (fine and thick), rubbers, pencil sharpeners, rulers. Brushes and watercolour if possible but not compulsory Availability: - Thursday 21 November (morning/afternoon) - Friday 22 November (morning/afternoon) Book displayed: Akissi

These two friends are the creators of the immensely famous Oksa Pollock – the teen series which has already been translated in 27 countries. Watch out, the Pollock wave is now sweeping across the UK… Workshop at your school: Neither Anne nor Cendrine could ever have predicted the success of Oksa Pollock, and they sure have a lot to say about it! They will talk about how they wrote Oksa’s story together in an interactive event with the pupils and they will tell them everything they know about the art of writing. You can also invite Oksa Pollock’s translator to come to your schools along with the authors for an insight into the joys and pitfalls of translation.

Aya is a serious girl who works hard and never gets in trouble, but when she accidentally becomes pregnant, her life is turned upside down... FRIDAY 22 NOVEMBER Event: Oksa Pollock, the Art of Novel Writing 10.30am-11.30am | in French | £5 French Schools (5e-3e) Have you always dreamt of becoming the new J.K. Rowling? Here’s your chance to discover the making of the world-famous teen series Oksa Pollock! The artists – Anne Plichota and Cendrine Wolf – will pass on the tricks of the trade of storytelling and will let you in on their sources of inspiration.
