Engine. The Cat® 3412E Diesel Engineis a four-stroke design and uses long,effective power strokes for more completefuel combustion and optimum efficiency.The 3412E is designed with highdisplacement and a low speed rating forlong hours of service between scheduledoverhauls and lower operating costs.

High Torque Rise. The 19 percenttorque rise provides high lugging forceduring acceleration and less down-shifting on grade or in rough underfootconditions. The torque rise effectivelymatches the transmission shift pointsto provide maximum efficiency andfaster cycle times.

Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injector (HEUI).HEUI is a proven high-pressure, directinjection fuel system. This systemelectronically monitors operator andmachine inputs to optimize engineperformance, HEUI is unique in its abilityto independently control injectionpressure over the entire engine operatingrange. This allows complete controlover injection timing, duration, rateand pressure for maximum performanceand efficiency.

• Modifies the heat releasecharacteristics of the combustionprocess for significant decreasesin sound and emission levels.

• Reduces specific fuel consumptionby up to five percent.

• Exhaust smoke is significantlyreduced (by as much as 75 percent)through precise, electronic controlof fueling limits and injection timing.

• Improved reliability and durabilitythrough elimination of the governor,reduction in mechanical linkagesand incorporation of electronicprotection strategies.

Transmission. The Cat seven-speedpower shift transmission, matched withthe direct injection Cat 3412E DieselEngine, provides constant power overa wide range of operating speeds.

1) Lock-up Torque Converter. The lock-uptorque converter combines the maximumrimpull and cushioned shifting of torqueconverter drive with the efficiency andperformance of direct drive.

• It engages at approximately 6.9 km/h(4.3 mph), delivering more powerto the wheels.

• The lock-up clutch will quicklyrelease and re-engage during shifts,maintaining power windup, improvingtransmission life and increasingoperator comfort.

2) Planetary Power Shift Transmission.The seven-speed, planetary power shifttransmission utilizes a modulatingpressure valve to regulate clutchpressure rise and fall to ease clutchengagement. This reduces shock loadson power train components.

• Large diameter clutches and robustplanetary gears and bearings.

• Patented rotating clutch pressureseals minimize drag losses andimprove reliability.

• 35 percent gear splits between allgears match Cat engine design foroptimum use of engine power withminimized shifting and torqueconverter use.

3) Final Drive. Final drive and differentialtorque multiplication of 17.48:1 furtherreduces stress on the drive train.

Axles. Full floating axles are shot peenedto relieve internal stresses and increasedurability. Rolled splines also provideincreased service life.

Wheels and Rims. Cast rear wheelsand Cat center-mount rims are mountedusing studs and nuts to minimizemaintenance and maximize durability.

4) Transmission and Torque Converter.The transmission and torque converterhave independent sumps, whicheliminates cross contamination.

Transmission Chassis Controller (TCC).TCC uses electronically transferredengine rpm data to execute shifts atpreset points for optimum performanceand efficiency. This integration allows:

• Programmable top gear limit.

• Control throttle shifting.

• Directional shift management.

• Neutral coast inhibitor.

• Economy shift mode.

Cat Data Link. The Cat Data Linkelectronically integrates the machine’scomputer systems, which allowscommunications and provides thefollowing benefits:

• Controlled Throttle Shifting. Enginerpm is regulated during a shift to reducedriveline stress for smoother shifts andextended component life.

• Economy Shift Mode. Modifies enginemaps, resulting in improved fuelconsumption.

• Directional Shift Management.Regulates engine speed during directionalshifts to prevent damage caused by highspeed directional changes.

• Elevated Neutral Coast Inhibitor.Helps prevent the transmission fromshifting to neutral at speeds above6.5 km/h (4 mph).

• Body Up-Shift Inhibitor. Helps preventthe transmission from shifting above apre-programmed gear without the bodyfully lowered.

• Event Memory. Records machinemanagement data that can be accessedusing the Electronic Technician.Recorded information includes:

Brakes. Caterpillar forced oil-cooled,multiple disc brakes are continuouslycooled for exceptional, fade-resistantbraking and retarding. The optionalARC and TCS utilize the oil-cooled rearbrakes to enhance truck performanceand increase productivity.

Oil-Cooled Disc Brakes. Designed andbuilt for reliable, adjustment-freeoperation providing superior performanceand service life in comparison to shoe-type and dry-disc systems.

Oil Film. Prevents direct contact betweenthe discs. Absorbing the braking forcesby shearing oil and carrying heat away,this design extends brake life.

Pistons. A Caterpillar patented,two-piston design combines the service,secondary, parking brake and retardingfunctions.

• The primary piston hydraulicallyactuates both service and retardingfunctions.

• The secondary piston is springapplied and is held in the disengagedposition by hydraulic pressure.

• If hydraulic system pressure dropsbelow a certain level, the springapplied secondary pistonautomatically applies the brakes.

Retarding. The Cat retarding systemhas an intermittent rating of 1119 kW(1,500 hp) and a continuous rating of526 kW (705 hp).

• When retarding, the engine runsagainst compression on downhillhauls, resulting in minimal fuel burn.

• Retarding forces and heat are absorbedthrough the oil. The retarding systemgenerates lower drive line stressesthan drive line retarding systems.

• Faster troubleshooting and diagnosiswith self-diagnostic capability andthe ability to communicate with ETthrough the Cat Data Link System.

• Operator awareness through electronicintegration and the CEMS, alertingthe operator to overspeed conditionsand critical machine functions.

Automatic Retarder Control (ARC).The ARC electronically controls brakingon grade to maintain approximately2,230 rpm (engine rpm is adjustablefrom 2,150-2,300 rpm in increments of10 rpm). ARC is deactivated when theoperator applies the brakes or throttle.

Engine Overspeed Protection. With theaccelerator depressed and/or ARCturned off, ARC will automaticallyactivate at 2,475 rpm to help avoidpotentially destructive and often costlyengine overspeeds.

Integrated Braking Control (IBC)(Optional). Caterpillar offers IBC(optional) combining ARC and TCSinto one electronic control.

Traction Control System. Monitorswheel slip so if the wheel slip exceedsthe set limit, the oil-cooled disc brakesare automatically applied to slow thespinning wheel.

Operator Awareness. Provides operatorawareness through an on-dash indicator,signifying TCS is engaged.

Differential Action. Utilizes normaldifferential action to provide superiormaneuvering in poor underfootconditions.

• Reduces tire scuffing as comparedto positive lock differentials usedon other systems.

Torque. Divides torque equally to reducestress created on final drives and axleswhen torque is transferred to one side.

System Back-up. Maintains the back-updesign. Should the sensors fail, normaldifferential action is still available tomaintain control and steering.

Box-Section Design. The 773D frameuses a box-section design, incorporating21 castings in high-stress areas, withdeep-penetrating and continuous wrap-around welding. Mild steel is usedthroughout.

• Mild steel provides flexibility,durability, and resistance to impactloads even in cold climates.

Castings. Castings have large radii withinternal reinforcing ribs to dissipatestress. Castings move welds to lowerstress areas and provide two to threetimes the strength of equivalent-sizedfabricated structures.

Frame Features. The 773D frameprovides for ease of serviceability.

• The box-section frame allows simpleaccess to power train components.This “open design” reduces overallremoval and installation time,lowering repair costs.

• Transmission access is excellentunder the raised and pinned body.

• Repairs can be made withoutpreheating in ambient temperaturesabove 16° C (60° F) using readilyavailable welding supplies.

Rollover Protection Structure (ROPS).ROPS attaches securely to four castingswelded into the frame.

Suspension System. Designed todissipate haul road and loading impactsfor extended frame life.

• Four, independent, variable-rebound,suspension cylinders absorb shocks.

• Rear cylinders allow axle oscillationand absorb the bending and twistingstresses.

• Front cylinders, mounted to theframe, serve as steering kingpins,providing excellent maneuverabilityand reduced maintenance. Casterand camber are preset.

Design. Designed to handle a variety ofmaterial densities. Maximum payloadis reached in three to five passes froma matched Cat loader in 1700 kg/m3

(2,900 lb/yd3) material and higher.

Sidewall and Floor Junctions. Joined byfive-sided beams to resist impact loadingand sustained hauling stresses.

Box-Section Beams. Offer increaseddurability in the floor, sidewalls, toprail, corner and cab canopy areas.

400 Brinell Steel. Wear surfaces provideexcellent wear resistance and are easilywelded without preheating procedures.

Two-Stage Hoist Cylinders. Provide fastdump cycle times:

• Raise – 9.5 seconds.

• Lower – 12.5 seconds.

Standard Body. Comes exhaust heatedwith options including a full-timemuffler or exhaust diverter.

Dual Slope Body. The dual-slope bodyoffers the lowest cost-per-ton optionin most construction and miningapplications.

• The dual-slope body performsefficiently under most haul roadconditions, but its strength comesfrom higher levels of productionin sites with rough haul roads andsteeper grades.

• Body floor construction uses an8° “V” bottom for increased loadretention, a low center of gravity,and reduced shock loading. It alsoaids in centering the load.

• An 18° ducktail and 9° forwardbody slope retains the load ongrades up to 15 percent and higher.This design also helps maintainproper load distribution.
