• Not being prepared• Apologising or making excuses for not being prepared• Reading off palm cards• Losing interest towards the end of a speech• Beginning with, “Good morning, my speech is about...” and finishing with, “In conclusion...”

Planning to deal with nervesKnow what happens when you feel nervous and plan around it:

• Verbal Warm Ups Deep Focus, Straw Bubbles, Happy puppy, hum, babies

• Shaky hands? Don’t hold loose notes. Place hands/fingers on the table or on your notes on the table

• Red, blotchy chest/neck? Wear a scarf/high collar• Lump/glitch in your throat? – Deep breathing; chunking phrases within

sentences; use short sentences; master the ‘quick swallow’• Fiddling with your clothes/fingers/rings? Adopt some clear hand

movements that say “I’m confident”• Dry mouth? Drink water before and take a sip or two during.• Take the spotlight off yourself by asking the audience to do something.

Preparation, preparation, preparation!! If you don’t know what you are talking about you will feel nervous. Practice –run through it several times and time it until it is spot on. Practice in the actual room and with your supervisor if possible (get feedback). Make sure any video/audio footage plays on the equipment you plan to use. Check software – will it play on VLC, Windows media player, Quick Time? Write reminders to yourself to breathe, slow down, pause, look up, smile, focus, engage on your notes. Don’t attempt to memorise, unless you absolutely have to for fluency. Use notes that jog your memory.

Dealing with questions from the floor:

Give yourself time to think before you speak

Be honest

Ask for clarification if the Q was not clear and then answer as best you can

A question or a comment that you don’t need to respond to in any way, other than to say thanks

Plant someone in the audience who can ask you a question. That way you know at least one answer and it will settle your nerves.
