While our understanding of the factors that influence inorganic scale formation and control are constantly improving, more extreme environments for hydrocarbon recovery continue to emerge. These environmental challenges include physical properties such as high pressure/temperature, high total dissolved solids and high pH, location in the form of deepwater wells with complex subsea architecture to unconventional long reach horizontal wells, which are now combined with the challenge of reducing operational costs.

01 Keynote Address: Correlating Calcium Carbonate Scale Risk from Field Experience Data Session Chairperson: Myles Jordan, Nalco Champion, An Ecolab Company

The main focus of this work is benchmarking of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) scale risk and its use in field development and operation phases. In general, defining a scale management strategy and design of new wells during field development are based on thermodynamic calculations, kinetic considerations and field observations. Experience has shown that wells with high temperature and high-pressure drops are prone to downhole calcium carbonate scaling, however there was a need to be more predictive concerning absolute values of temperature and pressure drops. The result from this work was a plot which has proved to be a powerful tool in planning of new wells, e.g. in the North Sea Oseberg field.

Kari Ramstad, EquinorKari Ramstad is a Specialist in Production Technology at Equinor ASA. She has more than 25 years of work experience within research and development, technology and competence and operations within Equinor, Statoil and Norsk Hydro. Her research interests include mineral scale and water management. Kari has authored and/or co-authored more than 40 technical papers and holds a couple of patents. She holds a PhD degree in chemistry from the University of Bergen, Norway. Kari is a member of SPE, has served as a technical committee member for many years, and contributed to several applied technology workshops.

0900–1030 02 Technical Session: Scale Control Lessons Learned and Case Studies I Session Chairpersons: Marija Kilibarda, Aker BP and Kristian Sandengen, Equinor

The first presentation will demonstrate how an integrated and systematic approach to predicting scaling potential was used to appropriately monitor and manage scale during unconventional production. The next case study will show how computational fluid dynamics modelling helped on the Nova Field to significantly improve scale inhibitor squeeze placement in an open hole horizontal with large reservoir pressure differences along the well, through the application of non-Newtonian fluids and inflow control devices. Finally, a study involving the comparison of carbonate scaling tendency and scavenging ability of six different H2S scavengers will show that chemistries are available that scavenge efficiently and do not increase carbonate scaling tendency.

This session recognises that effective scale inhibition remains a challenge for many operators in terms of high cost chemical deployment systems, selection of appropriate chemicals and the ability to monitor reliably and in real time the efficiency of inhibition. The knowledge base is growing rapidly thanks to on-going research and some exciting new developments, which authors of the papers presenting in this session are kindly going to share with us.

Notable work discussed within this presentation includes recent advances in mineral scale control with a combination of polymeric dispersants, phosphonate inhibitors and a novel evaluation method using a test rig able to reproduce downhole flow at realistic rates.

A well-documented challenge associated with calcite inhibition measurements is addressed in a new way with a laboratory test method that can be applied to a broad range of production conditions.

The results of a study of electromagnetic devices on the scaling process provide a welcome assessment of the potential of this non-chemical scale inhibition method, which has for some time captivated the attention of researchers. To highlight the latest in novel developments, an experimental example of using graphite as a sacrificial scaling material for calcite scale management, using electrochemically enhanced deposition will be presented.

The use of alkaline surfactant and alkaline surfactant polymer based EOR techniques has become a topic of major interest to the oil and gas industry. This session looks at the increased complexity of managing inorganic scale, where these EOR techniques are employed, the impact on modelling scale under EOR regime and what impact the polymers have on scale inhibitor adsorption. Additionally, this session will also present the work on how changing LSSW (low sulphate seawater) composition through increased sulphate levels affects scaling risks.

06 Keynote Address: Does Barite Scale Deposit at a Kinetic Stable Supersaturation Flow? Session Chairperson: Myles Jordan, Nalco Champion, An Ecolab Company

The deposition of barite on the surface is one of the most serious problems to flow assurance in the oil well. The scale formation is typically predicted by the thermodynamic solubility limit. However, it is believed that a kinetically stable region exists where no scale will form, even when the solution is supersaturated. The purpose of this study is to identify the supersaturated region where scale does not form and to determine whether inhibitors are needed.

Alex Yi-Tsung Lu, Impac Exploration Services Alex Yi-Tsung Lu is a Lead Chemist at Impac Exploration Services and was a graduate researcher at Rice University Brine Chemistry Consortium. His research interests include the theoretical kinetics and mechanisms of scale deposition, water chemistry, and mechanisms of scale inhibition. He holds a BS degree of Chemistry from National Taiwan University (2012) and a PhD degree of Civil and Environmental Engineering from Rice University (2020). He has authored and co-authored 26 journal and conference papers and is a member of SPE.

The scaling health of individual producer wells is dependent on key monitoring data inputs and can present significant surveillance challenges when multiple well flows commingle into a single production train. In this session, a case study from the Banyu Urip Field, Indonesia, will describe the occurrence of calcite scaling, and the challenges of scale mitigation, in a very low water cut, low salinity, HPHT environment. In the second presentation, it will be shown how Reactive Transport Modelling has been used to make scale predictions for several waterflooding projects around the globe. The final presentation will give examples from three offshore fields (North Sea, West Africa and Middle East) displaying the process used to design scale squeezes that extended the treatments from 12 to 24 months produced water.

Sulphide scales of iron, zinc and lead can present a significant challenge in specific oilfield environments and are less understood than the conventional scales. When facing a sulphide scaling risk, identifying and application of chemistries that are effective under the required production conditions can be an undertaking, with new generations of inhibitors and dispersant chemicals continuously being investigated to close the knowledge gap. In this session, we gain insight into sulphide scale management strategies, including advancements made in scale prediction modelling, discussion around the limitations of inhibitors in sour environments, and how improving interactions between the scale inhibitor and the formation can extend squeeze life.

Scale prevention is important to ensure continuous production from existing reserves that produce brine. Scale control is vital as wells are deeper, as they produce more water, but also as wells produce low water cuts as a result of evaporation. Improved scale prediction is possible with accurate input data such as water composition, thermodynamic and PVT data. The preservation of produced water and a good interpretation of the analysis together with an improved design of scale treatment can provide an enhanced scale management. This session gives an insight into the most recent developments within scale predictions and treatment design. An optimum collection and handling of formation water samples will be presented as well as rigourous procedure for the prediction of carbonate and sulphide scales which can be applied using any commercial PVT and scale prediction software.

General Information

Visa InformationPrior to departure, please ensure that you have current travel documents and if necessary, an entry visa for the United Kingdom.

SPE can assist in providing a visa invitation letter upon request in writing after receiving full payment of registration fees. It is the delegate’s responsibility to obtain his or her own visa. SPE cannot issue the visa nor can we guarantee it will be obtained.

Badge PickupEvent badges and material will not be mailed in advance. Your event badge and registration materials should be collected from the registration desk on Wednesday 24 June from 0730. The registration desk will be open throughout the event for any event and/or registration enquiries.

Cancellation DeadlineCancellations and requests for refunds must be submitted in writing to the SPE Office in London at [email protected]. Cancellations received prior to 27 April 2020 will receive a refund less a GBP 60 handling fee. Cancellations received on or between 28 April and 26 May 2020 will receive a 50% refund. For cancellations after 26 May 2020, no refunds will be issued although substitutions can be made.

This refund Policy applies to all refunds except in the event that the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office issues or designates

an “Advise against all travel” travel advisory for Aberdeen and/or United Kingdom for the dates of the event (“Travel Advisory”). In the event of a Travel Advisory, (i) SPE may, at its sole option, change the location and/or dates of the event (“Relocated Event”) and, (ii) delegates may, at their sole option, request a full refund without penalty or, in the event of a Relocated Event, have the registration transferred to the Relocated Event.

In the unlikely case of cancellation of an event by SPE, SPE shall not accept liability for any consequential loss and shall have no liability to reimburse any other costs that may have been incurred, including transport costs, accommodation etc. SPE encourages delegates to take out travel insurance when making travel and accommodation arrangements.
