Program Notes

For the Percussionist:

The "multiple-percussion" part located in the middle of the piece is for 5 membranophones and 3 non- tosemi- resonant metals. These are left up to the performers discretion.

This work is inspired by lectures given by Dr. Costas Efthimiou as part of the ICUBED“STEAM” initiative. Dr. Efthimiou lectured on black holes, white holes, and worm holes,

but what really struck me was a singular comment he made about what theoretically happens

if man were to reach the singularity of a black hole. At this point in a black hole, matter is so

infinitely dense that space and time can switch places. As I believe it was put in the lecture,

“A ruler would measure time, and your watch would measure space.” Although this

phenomenon can never be experienced by people (at least, not in the current state of our

scientific knowledge), the fact that this is possible anywhere in the universe at all astounded me.

Thus, the idea for this work was born.

In the work, motives for Time and Space are established, eventually trading places. The work is

a figurative journey through this switch, most notably featuring the well-known medieval chant

to the Dies Irae to represent the start of the switch. After the Dies Irae is complete, the

two motives have officially switched their places. The work ends on an upward note by altering

the thematic material just slightly. This represents not only an awe with new discovery in science,

but is meant to be a hopeful look towards the future of us as humans, hopefully for a time where

space travel is commonplace, and maybe where traveling through a black hole is possible.
