A Much Needed Alternative to Moodle (M204) Forsyth Country Day School’s search for a solution to go completely digital with online content required tran-scending commonly known technological avenues. During our exploration, we found that independent schools were similar to us across the country in that they too have been and continue to struggle with provid-ing an online presence for their students in a manageable, consistent, and reliable way. I propose to demon-strate a new LMS that was designed from the ground up to increase efficiency for the digital teacher, allow for simple creation and use of custom and open source content, and to consolidate systems (ie. curriculum map-ping and grade book programs). With this LMS, teachers will have the ability to intelligently map curriculum objectives to content, grade work in an exceptionally fast manner, create custom content with minimal clicks, and find a drag and drop friendly framework to outline their entire course. Administrators will have the flexibil-ity to witness reports that are drawn from the underlying data connected to the course’s assessments. These reports show student performance and allow observations into how well course objectives are satisfied and how responsive faculty members are in responding to students. In this workshop, participants will have the ability to enroll in a fictitious course to witness firsthand how a student and a teacher would use this new al-ternative in learning management systems.

Presenters: Mark Snow (Forsyth Country Day) | Audience: K – 12, Administrators | Level: Anyone

5 Tools to Know (M208) This interactive workshop will introduce web tools for every educator to know. We’ll explore five tools & gadg-ets – Diigo, RSS feeds, Google Education Edition, Voicethread, and Webspiration. Workshop participants will collaborate on how to use these tools in their schools. We’ll also explore any tools of interest to the crowd. All of our work will be shared on the virtual component of the NCAIS conference.

Teaching for the Brain: Using Modeling Instruction in the Humanities to Improve Understanding and Retention (M209) Recent developments in brain science have given us the key to better teaching. At this workshop attendees will be introduced to a teaching method called Modeling Instruction, which has been used successfully in the sciences for over ten years to promote better retention and the ability to transfer knowledge to new situations. The visualization of concepts at the center of Modeling Instruction brings about these improvements. Your presenters have adopted this method into two different Humanities disciplines (History and English) and will share their experiences in an interactive session that will include reflections on classroom results and sug-gestions on how to get started in this innovative teaching method.

How OneNote Changed My Life (M111) This session is designed to share my journey from tablet novice to in-house OneNote evangelist. When I re-ceived my tablet, I felt sure that it could help me integrate the personal connections with students that I value with the infinite capabilities of a laptop. But how? Stylus-based input combined with the organizational and synching capabilities of OneNote has completely transformed how my classroom functions and how I teach and interact with my students. OneNote helps unorganized teachers and students alike to keep themselves

organized and buys class time that would ordinarily be spent printing, copying, or emailing for instruction.

Why Using the World Wide Web Rocks! (M109) This workshop will highlight three innovative ways to make use of the Internet in a way that is meaningful and personal for students–the use of Class Press, Twitter, and Wetpaint in the classroom setting. The first portion of the presentation will focus on using the Class Press website for blogging. This is a wonderful website de-signed especially for classroom use. Students are constantly expressing themselves online through Twitter and Facebook, so why not give them a forum that combines something they enjoy with something that they are learning? A small focus will be on how to use Twitter to communicate with students and parents. Teachers can now ―tweet‖ about upcoming due dates or special events in their classrooms. Twitter is a great way to keep parents informed and to keep students on top of their assignments. Finally, I will focus on creating stu-dent Wiki pages using the Wetpaint site. Wiki pages are not only a great way for students to display their work electronically, but they also can serve as electronic portfolios, which can be used on college applications.

While the examples given will be from Spanish courses, these sites have many curricular uses.

The Success Story of the Eco-Chicos: How a Student-Led Environmental Club Uses Technology to Ignite Change (M104) All it took was one student. The Eco-Chicos, a middle school environmental group at Carolina Friends School, started three years ago with one student reading one book about the environment. Since then, over thirty-five students have joined the Eco-Chicos; they are involved in a highly-successful campaign to reduce, reuse and recycle across campus. Using electronic newsletters, short videos and Keynote presentations, they have shared their story and have inspired others to get involved in on-going eco-projects, such as an annual recy-cling fair, ―Trash-Free Tuesdays‖ in the Middle School, a campus-wide recycling program with Terracycle, and a designer-recycled-bag sale. Come meet the Eco-Chicos and see how they effectively use technology to in-

spire others and to get everyone in the school community involved in exciting environmental projects.

Alternative to Traditional Professional Development (M218) If you too know that the old model isn’t working any longer, and if you’re looking for a professional develop-ment experience that blends the best of Web 2.0 tools with a commitment to long-term, job-embedded learn-ing, we invite you to consider joining a Powerful Learning Practice Carolina Cohort now being formed for the

2010-11 school year.

Led by co-founders Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach and Will Richardson, over 3,000 teachers in PLP cohorts from across the US, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia have already learned how to move both their personal and professional learning practice forward to embrace the great opportunities that social online learning tools

have created. This year, we’re looking for 1,500 more teachers to join us.

Powerful Learning Practice offers what no other PD experience out there does: a blend of face to face and online interaction over a 7-8 month period led by a collection of the most experienced, passionate educators in the field. And we do it not by delivering a course but by creating a community — a community of educator

learners who support each others’ efforts to improve their own practice throughout.

Teaching Empathy, Creativity, and Professionalism in the Digital Age: Creating Nonprofit Organizations in Applied Technology Class (M219) How do we get students to think and care about other people, animals, and the environment when they spend so much time interacting with a screen? How do we teach them to present themselves professionally when they so frequently communicate in ―Textese‖? Recently, I rewrote my ninth grade Applied Technology cur-riculum hoping to achieve both of these objectives. In this new curriculum, students spend the entire semes-ter creating mock nonprofit organizations. They first study local and national nonprofits and make microloans through Kiva.org. Then they choose a cause, develop a mission statement, organizational name, slogan, and logo. They go on to create detailed budgets and graphs, marketing materials, and fundraising presentations. The course culminates in a Final Exhibition where each nonprofit founder presents their organization in an

attempt to convince visitors to ―donate‖ to their cause.

In this session, I will discuss what the students gained from the experience as well as what I learned (some of

it very unexpected!) and there will be plenty of time for questions

Presenters: Jean Pendleton (Charleston Collegiate) | Audience: Grades 6-12 | Level: Anyone
