BIENVENIDOS

riCHArd BUenO HUdSOneXeCUtive direCtOr

Twenty-twenty is not only the start of a decade, it is also a great opportunity for us at Instituto Cervantes to greet a new year full of exciting, compelling and thrilling cultural adventures. Along with our regular features in the fields of literature, art, critical thinking, performing arts, music, cinema and gastronomy, we have found new ways to fulfil our Mission Statement; “the promotion and the dissemination of the language and the culture of Spain and that of Spanish speaking countries”.

This year we are embellishing the program with two cultural gems which we hope will stand out in the crowd of the cultural hustle and bustle of the city of New York:

First, we are proud to feature the “Ibero-American Current Affairs Forum”, a meeting point for specialists in the fields of language, culture, science, technology, politics, social affairs, gastronomy or music, amongst others, organised by Instituto Cervantes together with other Cultural Institutes of Ibero-American countries. Our second new feature in the program is the “Instituto Cervantes Annual Conference”, a forum for specialists in the linguistic, cultural, scientific, technological, political, social and economic fields, organized by Instituto Cervantes together with prestigious Universities from Spain, Latin America and the USA in order to debate, highlight and reflect on the current situation of the Spanish-speaking world in the different fields and expressions in which it is present.

Can you think of a better way to understand Spanish Culture than through its language? To this effect, Instituto Cervantes offers a solid language program for adults and children alike, which has become a milestone. Its courses and the expertise of its teachers, who share with the teaching community through their teacher-training courses are a must. Instituto Cervantes also offers you the possibility to certify your level of Spanish, by means of its reliable and valid evaluation systems, DELE and SIELE, in compliance with international quality standards.

The Jorge Luis Borges library is the ideal place to get to know and enjoy all the novelties in literature, essays, films, music and the numerous resources available to students and teachers of Spanish.

Become a member of a great community with Instituto Cervantes. Take part in everything the Instituto has to offer and feel at home.

The exhibition Perseguidos y salvados addresses how over 15,000 Jews escaped during the World War II through the Pyrenees, the mountains between France and Spain. In it, two key events that mark this persecution in Nazi Germany are recovered: the Nuremberg laws of 1935 and the Night of Broken Glass of November 1938. Through the biographies of some families, photographs and songs, this exhibition explains how they managed to flee after crossing the Pyrenees heroically, and once they arrived in Spain, seek refuge in America or the then British Mandate for Palestine.

Book presentation in Spanish with simultaneous translation Jan.27th

El placer de matar a una madre (The pleasure of killing a mother) explores the suffering by women during the Franco regime and is inspired by real events in dif-ferent psychiatric centers. Under Franco´s dictatorship women who broke apart from social norms (single mothers, lesbians, women with mental disabilities, even women who were raped by a family member) were sent to mental institutions These women were deemed sick. The official discourse was that the regime was helping them. El placer de matar a una madre revolves around the contradic-tions of the last years of Franco dictatorship. The plot addresses the mechanisms used by the Franco regime to control its subjects, while building an intimate sto-ry and, in line with the resolution of a mystery, proposes an interesting reflection. The author, Marta López Luaces, will talk with nuria Morga-do, a member of the North American Academy of Language and Teach-er (CUNY) and writer and teacher rolando Pérez (Hunter College).

The legend of an ancient and forgotten civilization lies buried under a large expanse of dunes. For more than a century, a number of travelers have reached this remote and desolate territory looking for the traces of ancient inhabitants, the ruins of a city, or perhaps a sort of lost utopia.Ignorant of these myths and the romantic delusions of archaeologists and adventurers, a few men, barely visible among the sands, today inhabit in solitude that place facing the sea.

Is the Bandoneon a living creature? It may seem so.…In the hands of a skilled musician it starts to grumble and whine, to breathe and to sing its heart out. Few people can play it like raul Jaurena - he literally embraces it and elicits from it the whole range of emotions that this unique instrument is able to evoke. Latin Grammy Winner in 2007 for the álbum “I Love Tango”.

Discussion in Spanish with simultaneous translation Mar.11th

The climate change observed by our scientists pleads for a change in the current produc-tion model to avoid irreversible damage to the environment. As women, we are particularly aware of the problem as we are greatly affected by the effects of climate change. However, we remain underrepresented in senior positions within companies, governments and or-ganizations, where measures are being discussed to avoid reaching a point of no return.Women’s leadership can redirect economic policies towards socially just and sustainable models that streamline the use of natural resources and reduce the impact of human ac-tivity on the environment. Women are a decisive force in the design of a new energy model that makes progress compatible with a respectful attitude towards the planet. A broad and in-depth debate is in dire need, leading with issues as energy and employment, where all social agents are committed to reach goals that establish a major ecological transition.

“I dance because you exist!” Thus began the show Camelamos Naquerar, which the great flamenco dancer and choreographer Mario Maya premiered in 1976. At least that is how I thought it began... How do I investigate, rewrite, or reframe a show that I have never seen? How do I build from the resources I have? (these being confusing and incomplete). How do I showcase it using my body as a flamenco dancer? Or better yet... using my life itself. Could I talk about it? Camelamos Naquerar means “we want to talk” in Caló. Could I have a voice other than my feet, my hips, or my arms? Could I tell, write, read, and present the theme of this show, which deeply moves me? What role do we assign to the past to create in the present? How to be aware of this and reflect upon time? questions, creations, resources that intertwine—threads that lead us to different places, dance, music, texts—a world full of connections that make us travel through our senses.

¡AHORA BAILO YO!

The unstoppable advances in technology affect the automation of processes of industrial production and the global economy in many ways. New machines and robots are being developed that require the design of advanced algorithms fed by a huge variety of input data of new information and new products.Far from the apocalyptic visions, which predict a drastic reduction in the number of jobs in various sectors, people will continue to be the engine of production and will become the driving force behind innovation to help businesses and other institutions to adapt to technological changes, in what has come to be called, The Power of People.

This talk will be lead by ramon López de Mántaras Badia research professor of the CSIC at the Artificial Intelligence research Institute. Doctor in Physics from the Paul Sabatier University of Toulouse, “Master of Science” in Computer Science from the University of California-Berkeley and Doctor in Computer Science from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia.

A T A S T E O F S P A I N

JANUArY 23TH: rIOJA rESErvAS vS. BUrGUNDY CrUS Traditional rioja, based mostly on Tempranillo, and red Burgundy, made with Pinot Noir, are some of the most aromatically complex and deceivingly age-worthy wines. To start the year with a bang in this first seminar we will taste reserva and gran reserva wines from rioja, alongside some of Burgundy’s premier crus and grand crus from a variety of vintages.

JANUArY 30TH: DUErO vS. DOUrO The Duero, the “river of Gold” of roman times, now yields a darker and reddish, but equally golden harvest. One of the great wine rivers of the world, the vineyards of ribera del Duero, Cigales, rueda and Toro lay along its course and the ones of its tributaries. When it crosses into Portugal it becomes the Douro and its vineyard produce grapes for the famous fortified Port and the strong Douro reds, in which the Tempranillo grape (known there as Tinta roriz) plays a pivotal role. In this seminar we will compare the powerful red wines from the appellations that dot this blessed wine river.

FEBrUArY 6TH: THE COLOr PUrPLE rich, juicy, full-bodied, and immediately appealing, wines from Mediterranean-like climates are the boldest and most different of all the world-class wines. Far from the Bordeaux, Burgundy, Barolo or rioja models, these reds offer new styles and marked personalities that today go beyond its original rhône inspirations. In this seminar we will compare leading examples of Mediterranean style wines from Spain, France, California and Australia.

FEBrUArY 13TH: 2010: THE BEST OF THIS CENTUrYFrom the onset, 2010 was considered a vintage even superior to 2000 and 2005 in Bordeaux. In rioja it’s the best of the century, in ribera del Duero and Toro it’s tied as the best ever, and in Priorat it’s seen as the second best. In addition, as it happened with 1995, 2005 and 2015, 2010 has resulted in a very fine vintage in most major wine areas. In this seminar we will take a look at the evolution of this outstanding vintage.

WINE SEMINARS

Wine Tasting Seminars in English

Thursdays, January to March from 6pm to 9pm

Jan-Mar.

FEBrUArY 20TH: THE MAE WEST TESTIn the Mauro vS seminar last season we blind tasted side by side the outstanding 2005 and the weak 2002, a vintage not perceived as having a great future. Surprisingly, and despite their age, almost half the tasters expressed their preference for the 2002. The explanation? Extra care in the vineyards combined with the winemaker’s skills can elevate the quality of the wines from a bad vintage to much better levels. In this tasting we will compare wines from a vintage perceived as excellent with those from another year deemed as clearly inferior.

FEBrUArY 27TH: THE MAGNIFICENT 20162016 has been hailed as the best vintage of the decade in Bordeaux, South rhône Tuscany and Northern California. In Spain, it has been rated as simply the best ever in rioja and in the Duero areas, and an excellent one in most major areas. In this tasting seminar we will examine the quality and evolution of this promising vintage.

MArCH 12TH: A STAr ON ITS OWN: MONTILLAThe wine region of Montilla, located in the Andalusian province of Córdoba, has grown in the shadow of its better-known sibling Sherry. Despite frequently being mistaken with it, Montilla is a great wine region on its own. It is the cradle of distinctive wine styles like Amontillados, a word that means “in the style of Montilla”, and the intense sweet PX wines, both of which were imported and imitated by Sherry. In this tasting, participants will get to know Montilla’s unique personality and taste its diverse wine styles, from youthful pedro ximénez to decades old vintage dated luscious PXs.

MArCH 26TH: TIMELESS GEMS AND HIDDEN TrEASUrESSpain, one of the three largest wine producing countries in the world, has a collection of fascinating age-worthy wines, from the venerable rioja Gran reserva, vega Sicilia, and the top sherries and montillas, to a treasure trove of little-known intriguing jewels. This final tasting of the season is devoted to unearth these wine treasures.
