During the superbowl, one commercial struck a chord with many Americans and ignited some debate about what is American. One blogger col lected tweets on the controversy on his/her blog. You can watch the commercial and read the tweets here:http://publ icshaming.tumblr.com/post/75447787843/speak-engl ish-racist-revolt-as-coca-cola-airsSo, clase, what is your reaction to these tweets and the sentiment they express? What makes a REAL American? Does speaking a foreign language make you less American? Our country has no offi cial language. Our founding fathers were actual ly opposed to the idea of requir ing one offi cial language, so one was never establ ished. But the idea that real Americans speak Engl ish is a big part of this backlash. As Americans and scholars at a Christ ian col lege, what is our role in this debate? We wi l l a lso be continuing this discussion in Spanish in class on Wednesday, so think about how you can speak about this in Spanish and write a couple sentences in your answer describing your views. Some phrases that may help you get started are:

Un americano es ______________, pero un americano no es ___________.En el pasado, he pensado que un americano necesita ___________, pero ahora creo que ______________________.Como parte de la comunidad de Hope y Hol land, nosotros necesitamos _____________.
