Bath Spa University specialises in developing

and media. With an album due for release this
October, Dan Tapper, a second year Creative
Music Technology student, is a prime example
of the quality that can be achieved right here
on campus.

sound. Having taken inspiration from several
musical genres Dan has achieved a new sub-
genre of music known as Spectral House and
continues to experiment with elements of R&B
and folk music. Dan comes from an extensive
musical background, and this depth of
understanding gives him the ability to connect
with the emotion within music; the following
tracks on the forthcoming album capture this
sensation perfectly.
‘All That’s Real’ is a haunting mixture
of soft beats and contrasts that provides an
ideal background for the words expressed
within the song. The sensation created is
mellow while the lyrics tap into a darker and
more powerful sentiment of lost control. This is
not the only track on the album to produce a
!"#$%&'"(&)!(%*)+$%'$),(&--"&#.
The clever mixture of techniques
coupled with a rather minimal framework has
allowed Dan to create tracks that are effective
without being overpowering. Another song that
demonstrates this is ‘Tuesday 11th May’ which
shows the natural progression of the depth and
maturity of Dan’s music. Caribou and James
/#&0"(1&2"(3"")(4-"%$5%($)+6")%"4(*)(7&)84(
musical style; elements of this can be heard
throughout the album while he also manages
to bring something new to the table. The
mixture of electronic methods and acoustic
instruments rounds out a sound that taps into
the ethereal side of ambient house music.

from classical to the contemporary, it’s safe
to assume that Dan’s music will continue to
develop, hopefully far beyond the walls of
Bath Spa. Dan hopes to have a career creating

allow him to collaborate with others and also
continue to create original and diverse tracks.

reputation for cultivating talent at our university
