Why use space in careers

• It is aspirational – set your dreams amongst the stars, reach for the moon

• The space community is enthusiastic and full of people who love what they are doing and keen to share their knowledge.

• It exemplifies how engineering and science can be high tech and clean.

• It is a good case study for how technology can change over time … and how new careers might be possible that we don’t even dream of e.g. off-world drilling,

• The space industry feels that it is invisible – not a mention of astronaut in any careers book.

Resource for Careers Advisers

• Science and Engineering Ambassadors – companies such as EADS, SSTL have experienced engineers and technical staff.

• University outreach departments – e.g. QMUL, SETPOINT,• Museums e.g. National Space Centre, and Royal Observatory Greenwich run

sessions for careers advisers.• Royal Society Partnership Grants (funding for partnership activity) • Rolls Royce Science Prize (funding for promoting science awareness) • BNSC www.bnsc.gov.uk - free magazine, web based resources and some external

grants.• STFC www.stfc.gov.uk - free resources, web-based resources and public

engagement grants.• Royal Aeronautical Society – excellent careers library, dedicated careers adviser.

Special events for young people.• Farnborough Futures Days – special days dedicated to raising awareness of careers.• ESA –ESERO Offices developing e.g. at University of York• IAG Resources through STEMNET – Space Industry case study

Careers Adviser in Space?

• How much would it cost? $30 million for sub-orbital flight to International Space Station

• $200,000 for six minute flight with Virgin Galactic

• Or a free Zero Gravity flight as an educator – apply to ESA.

Page 15: Space: The Next Generation

Out of This World – Primary Careers Project

• Features – uses Space as a way of interesting students in science careers.

• Visits and activities from scientists, astronauts, science writers, engineers

• Funded through external partnership grants

• Model can be used for other career areas.

• Fun and high profile.
