Space Strategy for Europe
Space
4
• Maximise the benefits of space for society and the EU
economy
• Foster a globally competitive and innovative European space
sector
• Reinforce Europe's autonomy in accessing and using space in
a secure and safe environment
• Strengthen Europe's role as a global actor and promote
international cooperation

• Massive amounts of data
• Full, open and free-of-charge
• Different types of dissemination infrastructures
• New technology developments
• ICT and EO cross-fertilisation
• Interoperability with non-EO datasets
• Global EO competition
• Growth and jobs in downstream sector
Over 10 Petabyte/year of new data
with just Sentinels-1, -2 and -3 fully operational (data are downloaded
many time over)

Copernicus
C O P E R N I C U S B I G D A T A A P P R O A C H
Dual approach:
• Strong Copernicus Distribution Services for download
• Imminent launch of several Data Access and Information Services (DIAS)
– Access to all Copernicus data and information collocated with computing resources
– Big Data analytics without the need to download the data and information
– Data fusion with non-EO data and information
Overall ensuring that Copernicus data is easily accessible and used!

Copernicus Provide continuity to build confidence and improve buy-in by
both, commercial and institutional players;
Enhance Copernicus' capabilities in reply to the emerging needs:
• Further improve the climate change service and strengthen sustainability
• Develop and operate a monitoring system for antropogenic CO2
emissions
• Expand and improve service offer related to agriculture and forestry,
benefitting from additional TIR and hyperspectral observations
• Enhanced continuity of polar observations to support arctic policy,
addressing scientific and operational needs
• Expand the capacity for security (defence) by obtaining observation data
in near real-time with better timely and spatial resolution.

SPACE IN ARF —
INNOVFIN SPACE EQUITY
PILOT (ISEP)
C H A L L E N G E Optimise benefits space can bring to European society and economy
• How?
o Better exploit possibilities of space data, space technologies, potential of Copernicus, EGNOS,
Galileo
o Foster dynamic space innovation system, more favourable regulatory and business environment
• Leading to…
o Private sector has more appetite to invest in space domain
o Firms develop more innovative, space-related products and services
InnovFin Space Equity Pilot (ISEP)
• Key element
o Better access to risk finance for innovative 'space' enterprises
• Approach
o Invest in VC funds focused on innovative SMEs/small midcaps aiming to commercialise new
products / services linked to space data / spacetech
o EU investment pot of €50 mn combines:
- €20 mn from 'LEIT – Space’
- €30 mn from 'Access to Risk Finance’
o €20 mn in 2018, €15 mn in 2019, €15 mn in 2020
