Note from the Editor: Tampa was awesome. It was hot, but that didn’t stop Florida Moose from making noise in the sessions!! The turnout for the 4th of July picnic at Moosehaven was great and a lot of people who otherwise would never have had the chance, got to visit and experi-ence Moosehaven first hand. I would like to extend congratulations to Tudy Cundiff, our WOTM incoming Deputy Grand Regent, and Keith Delano and William (Bill) Norris for their appoint-ments as Deputy Supreme Governors. Already an appointed member, our own Fred Scott was named Chairman of the International Loss Prevention Com-mittee. And if that wasn’t enough, Joe Dion (Moose Legion Seminole #81) was named Top Moose Legion Secretary. And to top it all off, our very own Rodney Hammond was named Supreme Prelate of the Su-preme Council and John Reiter was appointed as Su-preme Councilman. Taking John Reiter’s place on the Moosehaven Board of Directors is none other than Bobby Baker. Quite a year for our association. Congratulations to all. While Florida didn’t capture any first place awards for journalism, we still took home a bunch and they are recognized in this issue on page 10. Well done, my fellow journalists and webmasters. I hope that everyone got to enjoy their time in Tampa, perhaps dining in Ybor City, checking out hospitality suites, riding the trolley, or just kicking back with old and new friends. Maybe you took part in the Heart of the Community events, helped bag merchandise in the store, were lucky enough to be a guest at the Aquarium for the League of Guardians dinner, or even checked out one of the nearby lodges. There sure was plenty to do at the end of the day. We’ve got our FBMA Annual Conference just around the corner where we’ll once again be honoring our newest Pilgrims in a special session, followed by a hosted reception. This will be a great opportunity to congratulate these gentlemen and to get to know them better. —Joan Fedora, Editor

Keep signing new and former members, keep contacting those in arrears and let’s ensure the growth and therefore the future of this great fraternity.

Thanks for all you do and God Bless Mooseheart and Moosehaven.

MOOSE- HONORING COMMUNITY HEROES

As I am writing this article I am sitting home recover-ing from major surgery. I am not sure if I am going to be at the Convention yet; that is up to the doc-tors to decide when they will release me. Even if I am not there, have a good

time, listen, learn and share with those who were unable to attend.

I do want to thank all for your thoughts, prayers and cards. It means a lot to Connie and me that you care.

I want everyone to remember that life is short and you never know what is around the corner at any given time. This hit me like a ton of bricks. It also has given me time to reflect and realize that I belong to the greatest fraternal organization in the world. It also makes me realize that holding grudges whether in or out of the Moose is just a waste of time. Just think if everyone felt that way. For-give easily and move forward: after all we are all in this together and none of us are getting out alive at the end. Don’t let issues of the past grind away at your soul. I love you all and look forward to seeing you when I can.

Message from the Deputy Grand Regent Boy did this year fly by!!! I have had so much fun this year and I am so thankful for your support and over-whelmed by the kindness you have shown me this past year. What an honor to be the Deputy Grand Regent of the #1 state for membership. Special thanks go out to our Chairmen and their committees who work so hard during the year and especially at conference. Stop by their tables at conference and say thanks to these ladies: Moose Charities-Linda Mulligan; Donors Circle-Julie Anderson; Mooseheart Boosters-Sonja Pratt; Fraternal Fundraising-Ellen Shindle; Endowment -Dora Lathan-Chalker; Com-munity Service-Ginny Gage; Membership-Shawn Esposi-to; WOTM Sports-Martha McKown and Government Relations Mickey Emberton. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone again at our An-nual Conference in Orlando. Wouldn’t it be great if we had 100% of our Chapters in attendance to congratulate our Green Cap Matriculants? It is going to be a great weekend with our Official Visitor, Past Grand Regent and member of the Supreme Forum, Karol Smith. I can’t go without talking about membership. We are in our second quarter of our Chapter year. Are you keeping

track of your member-ship? Is your Retention Chairman and her com-mittee making phone calls? It is so much easier to keep on track if you call these members who are behind or about to expire on their dues on a month-ly basis. Some may just have forgotten and need that little reminder. Let’s make Florida #1 again in New Orleans. Congratulations to our Incoming Deputy Grand Re-gent, Tudy Cundiff. Palatka Chapter, I’m sure you are as proud as we are and will support her every step of the way. Tudy you are going to be great!!! Fraternal hugs, Barb “Babs” Moffitt

and fraternalism that you truly deserve the Pilgrim Degree of Merit. I’m sure you all remember how it all started. It was for many different reasons, friends, camaraderie or the fun the Moose have. But as you started to meet your new Moose family, you met someone--or it was the person that signed you in the Moose--that mentored you on the path you took to earn the Pilgrim Degree. Please do not stop what you are doing to help build the Moose Fraternity because it’s men like you that keep the Moose strong. Remember someone helped you along by taking you under their wing; now it is your turn to men-tor someone that you believe has the fortitude to help the Moose remain great and maybe earn the Pilgrim Degree of Merit like you did. Billy Catlow FBMA President

Hello Loom and Chapter Members. First, I have to thank my wife Laurie for standing by me and supporting me during my year as President of the FBMA. Laurie did a great job entertaining the wives of the Executive Board and the Full Board mem-bers while we were at our meetings. I also have thank the FBMA Executive Board for the good job they did all year with scheduling of the FBMA Mid-year and our Convention. We tried to make it fun and informative for everyone. I hope you all received information you needed to help make your lodges enjoyable for all your members. With a new year starting I hope you give the same support you all have shown me to the new Presi-dent. It has been a wonderful experience to serve as the President of the FBMA 2016-2017 year. I have met many new people whom I can now call my friends. The Moose is truly a family of great people and, if we all work together, we can keep the FBMA on top of the Moose Fraternity. I’m not saying goodbye because I’m sure somebody has new things in store for me. Thank you all again for your support. Congratulations to all the new Pilgrims that received this honor in The House of God at Mooseheart this year. We all know how hard you had to work to receive this degree. All of you have shown through hard work

From the Desk of the Regional Manager

Retention is down and we really need to work each month on keeping our members. Don’t wait until they are expired; start talking to them the month before they expire. Our Year to Date Renewals number is 64,620 and of that number 50,205 have renewed their dues.

Gentlemen, we simply must do better at keeping our members. They will not stay just to come to a bar. We need to create activities for our members of all ages. We need to offer them good meal choices at a price that is reasonable, but also allows the lodge to make money. We need to hold community service projects they can get involved in and work. If we don’t support our com-munity they will not support us.

As we go through this new Moose year, please visit your lodge. Support them in their endeavors throughout the community. Take your ideas to the Board of Officers. Get involved in the running of YOUR lodge.

Remember what our mission is: Mooseheart & Moose-haven.

We need each and every member to come out in sup-port. Our future depends on it.

Sincerely & Fraternally, Sam Harris Regional Manager

It’s convention time again and this September I will not be able to attend the FBMA Convention. I will surely miss the fun and fellowship I have when I am there; howev-er, I know you will have a great convention regard-less.

All of you probably know that Territory Manager Jerry Monk has been un-

der the weather. If I know Jerry, he will most likely be there with you all showing you his new scar. I wish Jerry a very speedy recovery as I know each of you does.

Last year the FBMA not only ended the year with a PLUS 1, they had an increase in membership of 940 members. The FBMA also placed 5th in the Fraternity, which is ex-tremely hard for a large association to do. I want to thank each and every member that took the time to spon-sor someone or talk an expired member into renewing their dues. I also want to congratulate you on your 5th place status.

Now let’s turn our attention to this year. As this is the annual convention I wanted to give you some numbers. Bear in mind these are dated 8/17/17 so will be a little different in September.

The Pilgrim's yearly weekend getaway will be the second weekend of October. A few years ago it was decided that we would invite any widow of a deceased Pilgrim to attend the weekend. If any are interested let me know and I will send you the information. Per-haps a couple of ladies would like to share a room to save on expenses. If so, you can contact me by phone at 863-357-6847 or e-mail me at:

[email protected]. Thanks Robert F. Coleman

The following Pilgrims of Florida Lodges or are residing in Florida received their degrees over 25 years ago.

Note: Any Pilgrim that does not belong to the Survivor’s Fund can request an application to take part in this benefit for their beneficiary.

Communications

Three-peat: Peoples Choice Winners—FBMA! The Moose Journalism Awards program seeks to encourage and motivate editors of all Moose publications towards the achievement of consistently high journal-istic standards in their newsletters and, through such achievement, to enhance communication and shared information between Moose members and their Lodges, Chapters, Moose Legions, Higher Degree Councils, and Associations.

Entries are now being accepted for the Annual Moose Journalism Awards, to be announced at the 2018 International Convention in New Orleans, LA. Categories include Excellence for an Associa-tion Publication and at several lodge levels based on membership, plus higher degree publications. There is also a category for Best News Story and another one for Best Editorial. Website catego-ries include Lodge website and Association websites.

Participants can download entry/informational forms for both the publications and website portions of the contest at the following link (s) on the Moose Inter-national website in the Communications section:

– 2018 Publication Entries – 2018 Website Entries

The deadline for website submissions is 4:30pm CST, Friday, February 23rd, 2018. The deadline for publication submissions is 4:30pm CST, Friday, March 2nd, 2018.

Lodge/Chapter publications are eligible for the Moose Journalism Awards competition ONLY if they hold a valid Moose Publication Permit (per requirement of the General Laws), UPDATED with EDI-TOR’S E-MAIL ADDRESS, or have sent a completed Publication Permit application to the Moose In-ternational Communications office that has been received by January 31, 2018. If you’re unsure wheth-er your lodge holds such an UPDATED permit, call 630-966-2229. Association, Moose Legion and Higher Degree Council publications do not require a permit, but are required to follow the permit re-quirement of mailing one copy of every issue of the publication to the Dept. of Communications, 155 S. International Drive, Mooseheart, IL 60539-1174.

Good luck to all the participants!

As one of the judges, I look forward to seeing many more submissions from our Florida lodges and higher degrees. If you have questions, please contact me at [email protected] Joan Fedora, Editor Moose International Communications Committee

Lodge and Chapter News Persistence and Perseverance Result in a 3-time Premier Lodge St Petersburg Moose Lodge was instituted on February 28, 1946, and the Chapter was instituted on February 5, 1947. The lodge was moved around St Petersburg, with the last move nearly closing it down. The Moose home and property were sold with the promise that a turn key building would be built on the contractor’s property that he exchanged with the Moose. He went bankrupt leav-ing us with a piece of undeveloped land and no Lodge. We found a rundown storefront/old bar that was for sale and swapped our land for the old bar and no mort-gage but still we were so close to having the doors closed. In 2012 many changes were made and a small group of newer members decided enough was enough. With great pride, our newer and older members started to come together with fresh ideas and numerous volun-teer hours. From what looked like a rundown storefront to an appealing makeover made a difference in members starting to come back in and see the changes. We added dinners to Wednesday nights, brought back our MLC steak dinners on the 3rd Saturday, the WOTM had enter-taining events like The Newlywed Game, Minute To Win It, and Family Feud. Old and new members were treated alike and always with a smile. Guests that came back a 2nd time were always greeted by name. They were always impressed with that and would usually join on their 2nd visit. We believe the key to success is not what events you have or when, but how you are treated upon arrival, dur-ing, and departure of your visit. Our Moose family has now received its 3rd Premier Lodge award in a row thanks to the hard work and dedication of our Board of Officers, our WOTM and wonder-ful volunteers, and our dedicated Social Quarters attendants and members. Although we are fair-ly small lodge, we have numerous visi-tors say, “This is what a Moose Lodge is supposed to be.” So I guess we will keep doing what we are doing. We have enjoyed great expo-sure in our city by donating money to PAL, local churches

and food pantries, and are active in parades and the Adopt a Highway program. We letting the community know that the Moose is not a bar but A Moose Family Center to help children and people in need. I am very proud to say that I am a member and officer of a great Lodge. Submitted by David Dale, Administrator

What do you do when you hit hard times and love your children very much. When supporting your family seems impossible, resources are depleted and help from family has run out. You feel lost and you don’t want your children to have to feel the pain or go through the struggles you are suffering. Mooseheart. You gather all the information. You watch the videos and read all the literature and the testimo-nies. The activities are abundant and opportunities for growth are countless. You finally make the painful de-cision that it would be best for your children to admit them into a place where they are safe, well fed, clothed and supervised. They are schooled, taught social skills and manners. They are always your children. You nev-er loose custody of them. You can visit them and talk to them on the phone. They can visit you (at your ex-pense) during school breaks and summers. Mooseheart. A place for children to be in a safe, loving caring environment when a family is struggling. Fully funded by Chapters and Lodges all over the US and Canada. Did you know the estimated boarding school cost for 1 child at $50,000 a year? Our family is so very thankful to Port Charlotte Florida Lodge #2121 and Chapter #1619 for sponsoring our 4 children into Mooseheart this month. Although it was one of the hardest most emotional things we have ever been through, we know it was the best thing to do for the children. Please join us in praying for these children and the many other children and their families that have to experience the sadness of separation to do what’s best for their child. God Bless Mooseheart

It’s what we do. Above is a thank you letter to the Port Charlotte Lodge #2121 and Chapter #1619 for sponsor-ing a family of 4 into Mooseheart. If you need help or more information, Laurie Nelson would be happy to assist you. She can be reached at:

In July the Ruskin Lodge hosted a benefit for 6 year old Lily Grace, a young girl suffering from number of medical issues including a genetic disorder called mi-cropthalmia, a long name for a condition causing her eye to shrink. Already having lost sight in one eye, she is facing surgery to possibly save the other eye.

The officers at the Ruskin lodge have pledged to do what they can to help this young girl and her family and defray some of the associated expenses. On July 22nd the Lodge hosted a benefit with the help of donations from local establishments in the true spirit of “community”. The goal was to raise $15,000. By Saturday evening, $12,000 has been raised with donations still coming in. To donate, send or drop off checks to the attention of Kathleen Tsymbal at the Ruskin Moose Lodge, 1212 E. Shell Point Road, Ruskin, FL 33570. Submitted by Bill Birk, Territory Manager So. Florida

FLORIDA SHERIFFS YOUTH RANCHES

It probably comes as no shock that when the Youth Villa was an all-girl campus

jobs in the maintenance department were not in high de-mand. Job opportunities in that department weren’t even available, until Clinton came along.

For as young as he is, Clinton has been through a lot. After the loss of a parent he wasn’t adequately able to deal with his emotions and outburst of anger became a problem. He went from isolated incidents to a complete behavioral issue.

When he arrived at the Youth Ranches things didn’t im-mediately click for him either. It wasn’t until a fateful day after getting in trouble he was sent to spend some time with Mike in the maintenance department. From that day on a spark was lit deep inside him and things began to change.

It was as if someone had flipped a switch. Suddenly, that was where Clinton wanted to spend all his time. Learning to work on golf carts, cutting the grass around the cam-pus and even changing light bulbs was exciting and ful-filling. Clinton had found something that he could take pride in. Clinton became a hardworking shadow for the Youth Villa’s maintenance team of Mike and Xavier.

It wasn’t long before they caught the eye of Anthony. Having been hit by a car as a child, an incarcerated parent and now struggling with anger issues, the nine-year-old boy could sense that there had been a change in Clinton. He knew he wanted that too. Mike recalls catching An-thony out of the corner of his eye quietly observing the team one afternoon while draining fluids from one of the

campus golf carts. “You could tell that the wheels were turning.” Mike said. “There was a change already taking place just by him showing some interest in something.”

Soon after, Mike encouraged Anthony to come and join the maintenance crew. He gladly accepted and almost immediately began to shine. It was simple at first. His attitude started to change, his infectious smile was beaming more often and most importantly Anthony had found people he could open up to.

Both Clinton and Anthony have found something to be proud of and the expe-rience of a hard day’s work has only made them stronger and better-rounded.

The boys were so proud of their new jobs that when their coveralls came in they insisted on showing them off to the staff at the campus.

Clinton later began to open up and mentioned with a sur-prising amount of wisdom that he could see a change in himself since finding a passion for maintenance and re-pair. “I punched a hole in a wall at the cabin one night.” Clinton admitted, talking about an incident shortly after he began working on the maintenance crew. “But then instead of it being fixed for me, they taught me to fix it.” He continued, “They made me fix the damage I had caused.” That surprising act of repair was eye-opening for him. Something as simple as taking responsibility for his actions and their consequences was something Clinton had never really experienced in a hands-on way.

To most, the maintenance department might just be mowing lawns or painting fences, but for two of the boys at the Villa the maintenance department is living up to its name and helping them to maintain and repair their lives. The Youth Ranches best achievements are always cen-tered on our mission of creating resilient and productive citizens. Clinton and Anthony are well on their way to long lasting success. FBMA Supports the FSYR Summer Camping Experience

T he Florida Moose came through in a big way for the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches summer camp program this year by sponsoring camp shirts featuring the slogan, “Camp, where every star shines.” The shirt sponsorship was valued at $15,000.

Each year summer camp provides a positive camping ex-perience for many of Florida's deserving children. The purpose of these camps is to provide a wholesome atmos-phere and positive camping experience for boys and girls where they can experience many different therapeutic camping activities that allow them the opportunity to build basic teamwork and peer communication skills.

The camp also provides an opportunity for Deputy Sher-iffs and other Law Enforcement Volunteers to get per-sonally involved with the youngsters to form positive, healthy relationships. The Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches is grateful for the Moose’s continued commitment to Florida’s children.

New Year Starting Up for Youth Awareness Youth Awareness

along with 52 other students from across the Fraternity and spent the weekend visiting the surrounding area of Kenosha. They attended a Milwaukee Brewer vs Atlanta Braves baseball game at Miller Park. They were brought to a few Moose Lodges for dinners and activities. The students toured a playground that is for Special-needs children. It is called the Kenosha Dream Playground. This play-ground had just opened right before the Youth Aware-ness was in town and Scott Gordon, Youth Awareness Chairman for Wisconsin, was one of the key persons building the playground. According to both girls, they had a wonderful experience and are looking forward to this year’s Youth Awareness Program!!

I would like to take the time to thank some lodges and people who helped last year. Pensacola, Interbay, Inver-ness, South Lake County, Quincy, Ft. Walton Beach, Leesburg, Lake Panasoffkee for all sponsoring the stu-dents. I would like to thank Bob and Joan Malotte for all their dedication for Youth Awareness. Bob had stepped

down this year as our area coordi-nator. Thank you, Bob & Joan! Also, Susan Jacobs, Inverness, thank you for all that you do. Alan Herb, Interbay, and Roy Suarez, Pensacola, thank you for jumping on board last year! Looking for-ward to this upcoming year. And to everyone who has contributed over the years for the Youth Awareness Program. Submitted by Todd and Julie Anderson

Moose Charities

M oose Charities is charged with promot-ing and obtaining funds needed by our twin cities, Mooseheart and Moose-haven. Like a bank, the programs are created similar to a savings account and checking account to serve the PRESENT and the FUTURE needs of

both Mooseheart & Moosehaven. We have FOUR primary sub-committees overseen by the Moose Charities Chairman, and all are under the Moose Charities umbrel-la. These Committees work together as a team on behalf of Moose Charities to support Mooseheart and Moose-haven.

THE PRESENT financial needs 1. Mooseheart Boosters All donations to the Mooseheart Boosters are in support of current financial needs of the Children of Mooseheart. Your donation to the Mooseheart Boosters goes toward those needs. 2. Fraternal Fundraising Our Fraternal Fundraising Committee helps raise funds for the FBMA’s pledged projects. Currently the FBMA is actively working on the Moosehaven Centennial project.

THE FUTURE financial needs 3. Endowment Committee This Committee works to promote donations to the En-dowment Fund. These donations are invested in an in-terest bearing account, and the principal continues to grow like a savings account for our twin cities. We en-courage members to donate at the 9:00 ceremony in our Lodge homes in remembrance of our twin cities, and by having supporting special fundraisers in support of the Endowment Fund. Currently we have the Cradle and Rocker yearly campaigns.

4. Donors Circle The Donors Circle Committee works to promote INDIVIDUAL donations to the Endowment Fund. This money is also invested in the Endowment Fund to protect the future of Mooseheart and Moose-haven.

So as you can see....these committees are not competing. There are two appeals we make for funding....the present and the future; each committee represents a different avenue and need for our Moose family. Please keep in mind...ALL donations to Moose Charities are tax deduct-ible because Moose Charities is a 501(c)3 Non Profit. Submitted by Linda Mulligan, Moose Charities Board of Directors

Simple Explanation of Moose Charities

I’ve been living in Moosehaven For about thirty months or more, I didn’t know how life would be When I came through that door. Well, now that I have lived here, And know my way around, I realize there is no better place For my life to wind on down. Someone said “the Golden Years” Is the time to slow the pace, But one don’t have to slow down much When you’re living in this place. There’s always something going on And places we can go, So we can live our life on high, Or we can take it slow. They have parties we can go to And music, so we dance. They have Bingo several times a week

And Queen of Hearts, If you want to take a chance. They have bus trips to the lodges And shopping trips galore, To Walmart, Bealls, the drug store, And to the Dollar Tree and more. It seems there’s something going on, No time to do it all. Just pick out what you want to do And have yourself a ball. Or, you can take slow and easy, And live a life of ease. Just sit in front of your TV And do just what you please. So, now you know the Golden Years Are GREAT her in Moosehaven. We live life as we want to live At the last stop before Heaven. --Heyray (Ray) Shaw, Moosehaven resident
