Happy New Year to all of you, we hope the New Year brings you all good health and happiness.
We had an interesting meeting in December. Here are a couple of items of interest to everyone:
Anderson Station TOD: Justin Rebello gave us an up-date on the status of the now delayed Anderson Station TOD and Area Development Plan. Brian Pincott visited our meeting, with more information. Thank you both for taking the time to visit with us and give us some insights.
Basement Suite Developments: We have experienced a number of applications over the last six months. As a result, we researched the Community Association’s stance from 2007. Back then the City was proposing a new Land Use Bylaw, in which section 205 would have rendered established R1 neighbourhoods vulnerable to secondary suites being sanctioned at City Council’s dis-cretion. Our response to this proposal was: “Should the Land Use By-Law pass second and third reading with-out first excluding established R1 neighbourhoods from this proposal, City Council can expect great resistance from Southwood whenever such RC-1 applications arise within our borders.”
As it turned out, the proposal did not get beyond first reading and was dropped. Since then all basement suite development applications are dealt with on a one-on-one basis. This highlights the fact that although the CA opposed the proposed bylaw change, since the bylaw did not pass, we have no standing position on individual applications in the present.
The Community Association Board, after going over the history as laid out above, has passed a motion that, in essence, states we have no position on the one-on-one applications. However, that being said, we are al-ways able to assist a homeowner in how to deal with the city in terms of applications made. If you want details on the motion - please feel free to contact our secretary.
Skate Park Update: We hit a snag- the concrete pour-ing had a flaw and has had to be taken up to be re-poured by the contractor. Grades and angles are crucial in the making of a skate park.
What are we doing this month? We have two board members attending a further information meeting on the SW Transitway BRT. This is being held at Brian Pin-cott’s invitation. I will be attending the second LYN Com-munity meeting where we have discussed the changing needs of communities and are now moving towards selecting specific community service projects for our participation in the short-term.
The Winter Fest is on January 9. You have a hard work-ing board who love putting on these events. Please come on out and enjoy the fun. Remember to bring your food bank items for the Interfaith Food Bank. We are hoping for snow and some cold weather so our ice rink is an ice rink, and we can have sleigh rides not wagon rides! We would really appreciate more volun-teers – call any of us at any time to join in.
Kind regards,Vivien Jonathan

Hello Southwood residents!
As I write this we are finalizing our preparations for our first festival in 2016! Our annual Winter Festival kicks things off on Saturday, January 9 from 2 to 5pm. I look forward to seeing you there. Hopefully, the weather cools down enough for our great volunteers to get our outdoor ice rinks up and running in time for the festival. That’s right - if the last half of Decem-ber turned colder than its mild start, you can blame it on me!
Looking back on 2015, our three key events were very successful.
We opened 2015 with our annual winter festival. As always, the hay rides, petting zoo and face painting were very popular. It was great to see residents of all ages borrow skates from the KidSport skateshack and hit the ice and enjoy some skating. The dona-tions to the Interfaith Food Bank were also up.
Almost immediately after the winter festival finished, planning for Rhubarb Fest began. Our annual spring festival has grown over the past three years and in 2016 we will be aiming to add more activities for you to enjoy. In 2015, we had four bands play, free face painting, a petting zoo, kids’ bouncy castles, a beer garden, a BBQ, a market place and more! The weather was great and the event was enjoyed by over 750 of our neighbours. Save the date for 2016: Saturday, June 4 from 11 am to 5 pm.
Our third main community event in 2015 was the Halloween Howler. On Halloween evening we opened the doors of the community hall so people could drop in and visit. Some warmed up with hot chocolate and did crafts; others popped in for pop-corn or treats.
I would estimate over 1200 people visited these events in 2015.
I would like to thank all the volunteers that help make these events possible; I truly appreciate all you do for our great community.
I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas, a wonderful holiday season, and a happy New Year!
Crime MappingCst. Josh Young, Calgary Police Service
Crime maps and statistics that illustrate what kinds of activities are occurring in our communities are impor-tant to the Calgary Police Service. We also recognize that Calgarians are interested in this information.
Did you know you can access up-to-date information about criminal activity in your neighbourhood?
Log on to www.calgarypolice.ca to access the Crime Mapping Application, which allows you to choose from a variety of criminal offences, ranging from residen-tial break and enters to stolen vehicles, and select any neighbourhood in the city. You can also indicate a time frame, up to the previous six months, to display a map with any occurrences related to your selection(s).
You can also download the Calgary Police Service Mo-bile app. With the app, you can report a crime, submit a tip and access crime mapping and other resources.
Beyond these ‘high-tech’ options, feel free to contact the Community Resource Officer assigned to your neighbourhood for any questions about crime trends in your area. If you are unsure which officer covers your area, please contact your local District office for this in-formation.
Hall rentalsLooking for a space to hold your next function or week-ly/monthly meeting? Vehicle theft is an ongoing concern within the city of Calgary. Each year, as the weather cools, the Calgary Police Service receives an increase in stolen vehicle thefts, targeting unlocked vehicles left running (warm-ing up). With this in mind, please consider:
What can you do to prevent vehicle theft?•Do not leave a vehicle running with the keys in the igni-
tion for any length of time, even with the doors locked. •Never hide a second key in or around the vehicle.•Always close the windows, lock the doors and pocket
the key.
Cold Weather Vehicle theftCst. Josh Young, Calgary Police Services
•Park in well-lit and well-traveled areas.•Take valuables with you or hide them out of sight.•Use anti- theft measures such as a steering wheel lock,
a vehicle immobilizer system or an alarm system.•Consider installing a remote starter if you need to
warm up your vehicle in the morning.•Report suspicious activity. If you see suspicious people
in or around motor vehicles, call 9-1-1.
Remember, a few minutes braving the cold with your vehicle can save you from a headache down the line.

Pet safety—Keep your Pets indoors this winterHumans are not the only ones who need to keep warm during the winter months. Your pets do too. Although they might be covered in fur, your pet can still fall ill during the colder months or even get frostbite when temperatures drop below freezing. But have no fear, here are a few tips on how to keep your pet warm this winter.
Keep your pet indoors. This is the number one way to keep your pets safe and warm in the winter. For dogs, take shorter walks when the weather is severely cold. A good rule of thumb is to go out with them and when you’re ready to come in, chances are your dog is too. If your dog must stay outside, make sure she has proper shelter and a source of fresh water at all times, and make sure her water cannot freeze.
It’s important to remember that cold cars can pose a significant risk to your pet’s health. Leaving your cat or dog in the car is just as dangerous in winter as in the summer. Limit car travel to only that which is necessary, and don’t leave your pet unattended in the vehicle.
If you lose your pet during the winter months, do not delay. Call 3-1-1 to see if Animal Services has picked up your pet. If not, file a lost pet report with Animal Services.
For more information about pet safety please call 3-1-1 or you can visit us on our Facebook page or on Twitter @yycbylaws.

Happy New Year everyone!
I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and had a chance to spend time with friends, family and loved ones.
Recently, our government announced Alberta’s Climate Leadership Plan. The Plan, based on the advice of the energy industry, experts and real Albertans, puts a prices on carbon, phases out coal pollution, and limits pollution from the oil sands.
This climate leadership plan is important for many reasons:•We are doing the right thing, showing leadership to
protect our health, environment, and economy for future generations.•We are creating a more stable, diversified economy
that will create good jobs in the renewable sector.•Our plan is bringing people together to strengthen
our economy, with the support of the oil and gas in-dustry, environmental groups and First Nations.•Our approach will improve Alberta’s reputation and
access to new markets, and protect jobs in our largest industry.•A made-in-Alberta plan means we won’t have climate
change programs imposed on us from outside our boarders.•This plan works for our province and our industries,
and keeps our capital here in Alberta.
The price on carbon will be revenue-neutral, with in-vestments in new technology and infrastructure, as well as adjustment funds for low and middle income fami-lies, small businesses and families who work in the coal industry.
Some of our communities rely heavily on the coal indus-try, and we have been faced with increasing pressure on our way of life as the health effects of this industry be-come more widely known. More and more, we see coal mines and coal-fired plants closing in Alberta and be-yond our borders as well.
Our Government is committed to work with com-munities and businesses that rely on coal to develop community-specific adjustment plans to make the in-evitable transition work in a way that supports families.
The road ahead is a challenging one, but one we have known is coming. This Plan will make Alberta one of the most environmentally-responsible energy producers in the world and enable us to create a more diversified economy.
I bet you are wondering what you can do at home to save on your energy bill, reduce household waste and lower your water usage. Green Calgary is a wonderful not-for-profit with a mission to engage and empower Calgarians to create healthy homes, communities, and businesses by providing environmental education, products, services and hands-on support. Get together 4 or 5 of your friends and host a Green Tea - enjoy an evening facilitated for you and your guests and learn about simple, practical and affordable ways to maintain a greener household. Green Calgary offers a variety of other programs. Contact Green Calgary at 403-230-1443 and check out their website at www.greencalgary.org.
Mark your calendars: my office is hosting another Open House! On Thursday January 28, 2016 between 5-8 pm, stop by the office to have a coffee, ask questions and join in the conversation.
