From the General Manager,WELCOME to the first issue of the Southside Magazine.Unfortunately, this will not only be my first column in this magazine, it will also be my last because I have announced my retirement. After almost 14 years here at Southside Sport and Community Club as General Manager and 31 years in the licensed club industry, it is finally time to call it a day.Over the past 14 years it has been a very rewarding experience to be a part of the development of this wonderful club from its very humble beginnings in 1997. The club opened its doors with a small bar, sponsored by Carlton and United Breweries, a small café and 40 second hand gaming machines purchased from the Broncos Leagues Club. When I came on board in January 1999, the plans were already in place for the first of four redevelopments that would follow over the next 11 years to take the club to where it is today. With more than 25,000 members, the club has served the community well providing $5,241,658.21in financial support and services to charitable, community and sporting organisations since 1998. This is a remarkable achievement considering the very humble beginnings in what was the former Skateway roller skating arena. In October this year, the Stage 5 redevelopment will start and will provide a further expansion of the building and a brand new gaming room that will provide a whole new experience and ambience and a new level of service for our patrons.

To accommodate the expansion of the gaming room, we are relocating the canteen that services the bingo auditorium. We are building a new facility on the northern wall which will double the capacity of the existing canteen with four service points to ensure we can serve more patrons in a shorter period of time during the intervals. For most of the time during the Stage 5 redevelopment there will be minimal impact on the patrons. Even when we are upgrading the gaming room, it will be done in three stages from January through to April 2013 with at least 120 gaming machines available for play at any one time. It will be very interesting to watch the new facilities develop, like watching a caterpillar evolve into a beautiful butterfly. The club has come a long way since September 1997 and it has an extremely bright future as long as our valued members continue to support this wonderful community owned entertainment and dining facility. My thanks to all of the loyal members who have made my job over the past 14 years a very pleasurable experience. While I will not miss the responsibility that goes with overseeing the operation of three community clubs and the biggest bingo centre in Queensland, I will miss the people – the members, my fantastic staff and the members of the management committee who continue to provide outstanding competent and professional governance of your club.

My best wishes to everyone,Graham Chattin

Melbourne Cup DayMelbourne Cup Day is a special day at Southside Sport & Community Club. We will be running an event similar to last year’s successful Cup Day. Unlike other clubs, which serve a meal of chicken and salad and charge you a large ticket fee, Southside will open its restaurant so you can order what you would prefer to eat off of the menu (which will include Cup specials) and there will not be any ticket fee. You can enjoy the Cup atmosphere with the sweeps, Cup decorated tables, prizes for fashions on the fields and door, free entertainment with Rob Rosenlund from Wickety Wak, and the race being broadcast on a huge projector screen. The only stipulation is that booking will be essential. Bookings can be made by calling (07) 3219 1103 or by speaking with our friendly reception staff on your next visit. Hurry as available spaces will not last long. See you at Southside!

New Wi-fi ConnectionThere are going to be a lot of changes here at Southside Sport & Community Club over the next couple of months. One of these exciting changes will be the introduction of an ADSL 2 Wi-fi hub. This will mean our members; guests and visitors will be able to use their smart phones, iPads, tablets or laptops to connect up to the internet anywhere throughout the Club at no cost to them. The password, for access to the hub, will be made available at reception and will be changed periodically for your protection.

New look for Southside StaffThe Staff here at Southside Sport & Community Club are sporting a brand new look. Gone are the old grey uniforms with the red collars with Management opting for a much brighter design this time. The new uniforms are royal blue with a gold trim and made of a special fabric that is cool in the summer, yet warmer during the winter months. There is a pocket in the back which gives the wearer more flexibility and the biggest plus it is a wash and wear uniform – no ironing required. The reception and welcoming staff have been given a separate distinctive black uniform with a high collar and red trim. Supervisors wear the red blouses while Duty Managers are sporting a grey, white and beige striped shirt. All in all the Southside staff are walking tall and looking good.

Breakfast targets $50,000FINAL arrangements are being set in place for the annual fund-raiser for prostate cancer research. With the Stage 5 redevelopment to impact on the Southside Bingo hall in October, the club is unable to stage its planned 700-person breakfast which was announced with the intention to raise $70,000.Instead the breakfast will still go ahead in the newly renovated Carson Room at the Mount Gravatt Bowls Club on Sunday, November 4.“The invitations are going out now as the room can hold 200 and it will be on a first-in, best dressed basis,” Southside’s General Manager Graham Chattin said.“The breakfast will be on a Sunday morning which we believe will be more convenient for people. To add a bit of fun, we will also stage a grand auction of sporting memorabilia from State of Origin, Broncos and the Roar as well as our normal giant raffle.”Tickets will be $30 per head with the club setting a target of $50,000 to raise.Starting from humble beginnings in 2009 with a barbecue breakfast on the terrace at the Southern Cross Sports Club, the event last year attracted a record 480 guests to breakfast at Southside where they were treated to entertainment, guest speakers and a full breakfast menu.A staggering $50,000 was handed over on the day to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, a figure boosted

by a generous $18,612 donation from Southside Bingo players, which this year is again pitching in with fund raising.Organisers had not counted on that injection of funds, which helped the tally eclipse the $20,000 raised at the 2010 event. The Club also was overwhelmed by support from businesses for the monster raffle, which was drawn at the breakfast in November, with more than 100 donations received. The Club is not relinquishing its grip on raising funds for this most deserving cause. It is running multiple raffles on Friday and Saturday nights at Southside with the staff dressed in Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia polo shirts and blue “Clown Wigs”.

A NEW menu devised with major input from members will be unveiled in roast casual dining on September 1.Southside General Manager Graham Chattin said the club had surveyed roast customers to work out what dishes they preferred.“This new menu will introduce more variety,” Mr Chattin said. “We also have tried to keep meals within an affordable price range.“But patrons can be assured that we have a real focus on quality at roast and there is a lot more variety, which is in response to the wishes of patrons.”Mr Chattin said that apart from the

standard menu, roast would feature blackboard specials every week. “We will have six different items on the blackboard specials with most in the $15 to $20 price range and quality items,” he said. “I also urge patrons to fill out the questionnaire forms and tell us what they think of the meals. The forms are place in prominent spots around roast. We need to know so we can provide the best service and meals.”Mr Chattin said eat café would undergo a small tweaking to what was already a very popular menu.

“… we will do everything we can to help you enjoy your time here”. These are the words of YMCA Group Manager, Michael Tsiamis when he speaks about fitness for the over 50’s, 60’s and 70’s+. And he should know. The YMCA Wellness Studio in Upper Mt Gravatt runs a successful, well-regarded exercise program for the mature-aged person on a weekly basis. The ‘Masters in Motion’ program is specially designed to meet the needs of people over the age of 50. Qualified Personal Trainers work with these groups and, apart from their acknowledged skills in the promotion of fitness; they show empathy and understanding of each person’s abilities and limitations. Of course there are exercises, but no-one is expecting miracles – strangely enough however, the miracles happen all by themselves. All of a sudden the participants find that they can bend over a little easier, climb up stairs without getting overly puffed, move around a little more agilily and other such benefits. Men and women who slowly walk into the studio, gather their thoughts, chat with their friends and then participate in their group fitness program remark that they walk out feeling refreshed

Honouring our veterans at VP Day commemorationsVICTORY in the Pacific Day, also known as VP Day, is celebrated on August 15 every year to commemorate Japan’s acceptance of the Allies demand for surrender in 1945, effectively bringing to an end World War II. Then Prime Minister Ben Chifley announced the news to the nation on the wireless at about 9am, causing spontaneous celebration in city streets across the country. Since then the day has continued to be recognised and celebrated in many countries and is an important day on the military calendar. Ian Kaye, State Member for Greenslopes, and Carl Judge, Member for Yeerongpilly, were proud to attend commemorations at Stimpson Park, Moorooka with members of the Stephens RSL Sub-Branch. It was a moving service with speeches given by World War II veterans reflecting on that remarkable day and giving an insight into what it felt like to know that after almost six years the war was over. And 67 years on, this historic day continues to hold significant meaning in the hearts of many people and it is important that we continue to acknowledge and appreciate the contribution made by our returned servicemen and women as well as our troops currently fighting battles abroad.

Paul SlingerMt Gravatt

When it comes to Real Estate Southside Sport and Community Club have formed an alliance with Paul Slinger from Go Gecko Mount Gravatt.

With a wealth of experience in the real estate industry Paul’s office in Mt. Gravatt Central has saved its clients over $2 million in commission since it opened in 2006. It’s an impressive statistic. But for Paul, saving his clients money by capping commission is just one of many ways he helps his clients make the sale or purchase as stress free as possible.

If you are a member of Southside Sport and Community Club don’t talk to anyone about your property until you have spoken to Paul Slinger at Go Gecko Mt. Gravatt on 3849 6888. Paul won’t only save you thousands of dollars in commission he will provide you with the experience and professional expert advice you need when buying or selling your home.

Marketing is one of the main costs of selling any property and it’s important to know that it is money well spent. The best way to be sure of this is to ask your agent if they have conducted local research to know where their purchasers come from. Recent research conducted Australasia-wide may help you in assessing the advertising market in your own area. Just three sources generate, on average, 89.5% of purchaser enquiry. The same research also shows that the Internet is increasingly being utilised as the primary contact point with property for sale by purchasers looking for a residential property – currently a massive 72% of enquiry. The two other main sources are newspaper display advertising (11%) and For Sale boards (6.5%).For a comprehensive assessment of your internet and other marketing options talk to Paul Slinger at Go Gecko Mount Gravatt on 3849 6888.

It was hard road to the topLORD Mayor Graham Quirk and the Mt Gravatt District Historical Society have unveiled a plaque dedicated to the original workers who built the road to the Mt Gravatt Mountain Summit in the 1930s.The Depression of the early 1930s caused a lot of hardship, with many men not being able to find work. To relieve the situation, the City Council started the construction of the current road to the top of Mt Gravatt Summit. The road, which was to be a 1 in 14 grade, would start from Shire Road and pass through the portion of land donated for the purpose by the Petty Family on April 17, 1916. The current road to the summit of the mountain being a public works exercise was built under City Council supervision with the use of relief workers labour.Relief labour was the equivalent of today’s dole, only you had to work for it. It was all pick and shovel, (no bulldozers then) and there was no monetary pay. Single men were employed at four hours a fortnight, while men with a wife and one child would work one day a week

Special film show for local seniorsIN 2011, the Hornibrook Bridge near Redcliffe was demolished. Local filmmaker and President of Club Camcorder, John Westwood, devoted four years to recording its history and demise. The bridge was built in 1932 and was then the longest viaduct bridge in the southern hemisphere.Beyond the Bridge – Hornibrook heads up a 90-minute program of amateur and professional films produced by members of Club Camcorder, a video club that meets regularly at the Southern Cross Sports Club on the corner of Klumpp & Logan Rd in Upper Mt Gravatt.Previously shown with great enthusiasm to patrons of local retirement villages, Club Camcorder is opening the program to all local seniors (over 50s) and there is no charge.Asked what response Club Camcorder enjoyed to previous programs, Mr Westwood said: “Extremely enthusiastic with some shows entertaining more than 100 patrons. The program also includes a range of locally produced short

movies, documentaries, comedy and drama”.The next program will be held on Wednesday, September 19 starting at 10.30am at the Southern Cross Sports & Recreation Club and entry is free. Southern Cross will also provide one of its spectacular seniors three-course lunches for only $9 to those who want to relax directly after the film show.Bookings are essential as seating is limited and seniors should telephone Southern Cross Sports Club on 3849 3366 as soon as possible or visit the reception desk at the club.

Linking backyard to bushBy Michael Fox Mt Gravatt Environment Groupwww.megoutlook.wordpress.com

The Blue-banded Bee Amegilla cingulata has a limited foraging range of about 300 metres. Historically these bees were native to the whole Bulimba Creek catchment. However, habitat fragmentation caused by urban development means that they are common only in isolated pockets like Mt Gravatt Conservation Reserve. A native bee, the Blue-banded Bee also provides valuable pollination services for a range of important vegetable crops, including tomatoes, capsicums and eggplants. These crops benefit from buzz-pollination - bees hold onto the flower and vibrate to shake the pollen out, a service that the more commonly known European honey bee Apis mellifera cannot provide. A high-value species with a limited range, the Blue-banded Bee is a good example of species we need to encourage through establishing Pollinator Links – wildlife corridors for urban spaces. Pollinators including birds, butterflies and bees have some capacity to cross man-made barriers such as roads and fences, so pollinator corridors can be created with backyards and parks forming the links by providing: food – nectar rich flowers, fruits and seeds;

breeding sites – nest-boxes, bee blocks;water – birdbath, frog pond, local creek. We started our first Pollinator Link by landscaping the Mt Gravatt Girl Guide Hut, 260 metres as the bee flies from the Rover Street Bushcare site. The iconic native Grass Tree Xanthorrhoea johnsonii, popular with Blue-banded Bees, is already attracting butterflies. Love Flower Pseuderanthemum variable, a pretty native herb pollinated by Blue-banded Bees, will provide caterpillar food for Leafwing and Varied Eggfly butterflies. We can hugely increase species habitat by similar selective plantings within our own backyards, creating links for airborne species and as a result our backyard vegetables and flowers will benefit from increased pollination. Can your backyard become part of a Pollinator Link?

Police ResponseCONTACTING police can be a very stressful event for some of us. Some of us have never spoken to police before and others have only had contact with police for the first time when being issued with a traffic infringement ticket. When we call upon police to come and assist us, we don’t really think about how that will come to happen. All we do is pick up the phone and dial 000 or 131 444 (PoliceLink). Every police station is allocated police vehicles. Some are marked vehicles (police stickers and signing) and others are unmarked (usually used by plain clothes officers). A police station is also allocated a number of police officers to respond to jobs and community requirements during a 24-hour period. Some stations are opened until 4pm, others stay open 24 hours a day. A police car is tasked to conduct the following tasks during an eight-hour shift: (below are some of the jobs police attend, the list is non-exhaustive) • Traffic incidents; these include fatal and minors • Domestic violence incidents • Disturbances • Noise complaints • Traffic complaints • Disputes • Abandoned vehicles • Lost/located property • Animal cruelty • Child abuse • Missing persons • Patrols

All the above jobs can occur within one eight-hour shift and a domestic violence incident alone can take up to two hours to finalise. When a police crew is engaged in a job, they are there until the job is finished and other police crews from other police stations may be tasked to come and assist with police jobs. So don’t be surprised if a crew from Coorparoo is attending at your break and enter at Morningside. Next time we call the police, let’s think about the above!

Men’s Shed pushes onAFTER marvellous support from state and local government, local businesses, service clubs, individuals, Southside Sport & Community Club and all at Mt Gravatt Showgrounds, the construction of the Mt Gravatt Men’s Shed is proceeding apace. In the latest issue of Shed Talk, President Brian Wheeler reports: “As the month of August draws to a close, I am pleased to report that we have a building that is progressing well. “We achieved lockup just in time. The installers were fitting the last roller doors as we moved all of the equipment into the building on Thursday, July 19. “We were out of the Hamlyn-Harris pavilion in time for the show. The exterior has been painted with three coats, the external panels are in place.“The scaffolding has been removed and it looks great. The electricians inform me that we have well over a kilometre of electrical cable throughout our shed. I hope that we have enough power to energise all that cable at the one time.”

Grant helps kids swim like fishTHE Mount Gravatt Mackerels Swim Club is preparing for another fun-filled season of swimming. Over the off season, the club has benefited from a grant from Southside Sport & Community Club to purchase a new laptop computer. State Member backs SouthsideTHE State Member for Mansfield has come out swinging in State Parliament on behalf of Southside Sport & Community Club. Ian Walker, who was elected this year, said one of the significant ways in which the club puts its profits back through the local community was through its community benefit grants scheme.“Since the club’s inception in 1997, it has distributed more than $4 million to charities and community organisations,” Mr Walker told Parliament. “I was at the 2011 Queensland Day dinner, which was a wonderful event, but this year the club tried something different – a morning tea.“It was attended by not only myself but also my

Young leader takes on the worldMANSFIELD High School student Ameera Mahomed-Ismail has returned from a life changing trip to Washington DC and New York City where she participated in the Global Young Leaders’ Conference, an international program designed to build leadership skills in a global context. Organised by the Congressional Young Leaders’ Council, the conference brought together 300 high-achieving students from 15 different nations, giving them the opportunity to explore the role of the United Nations through the concepts of communications, diplomacy, international law, peace, security, and economics. Student delegates were assigned to a country and represented their designated country by participating in a UN Security Council simulation and a UN General Assembly simulation, as part of a global summit. Ameera said it was very interesting to see how the UN process operated and very rewarding to see all of their preparation paid off during the simulations as they worked together to achieve a satisfactory outcome for all.

It was not all work for Ameera. In Washington, she was able to experience the heritage of the United States as she visited the monuments, museums and the White House. Activities Ameera also enjoyed in New York included visiting Greenwich Village and the Empire State Building, delighting in a performance of Mary Poppins and spending July 4 at Coney Island Amusement Park. Ameera believes the trip was extremely worthwhile as she is now more culturally and globally aware. She can also appreciate the complexities of the United Nations organisation, acknowledging that it has both positive and negative aspects. Ameera said she was now far more appreciative of her life in Brisbane and was very grateful to everyone who supported her in this venture.

colleagues the member for Greenslopes and the member for Sunnybank and our Brisbane City Council and other parliamentary colleagues.“In 2011-12, the club contributed $559,542 to our local community and that goes to many organisations in the Mansfield electorate itself or in which Mansfield residents take some part.“In particular, our two state schools – Mansfield State High School and Mansfield State School – receive significant dividends from the club and the P&Cs of those schools benefit greatly from the distributions made by the club.”Mr Walker said the Mount Gravatt Hawks Soccer Club, the Mount Gravatt Australian Football Club and the Mount Gravatt Bowls Club also receive significant assistance, as did the swim club, the Men’s Shed, the PCYC, Neighbourhood watch groups, the Mount Gravatt Environment Group, Mount Gravatt Little Athletics and the QEII Track Club.

Three of Southside Bingo’s existing air-conditioning units have been in use for up to 25 years now and have exceeded their useful life and need to be replaced. With warmer weather on its way, having a reliable air-conditioning system in place will be a, (excuse the pun) a breath of fresh air for the regular Southside Bingo players. This task will not be an easy one. General Manager Graham Chattin has been over-seeing the project and says there are three enormous units which need replacing and with each replacement the roof above needs to be lifted and the ceiling below pulled out to replace and adjust the ducts. He says “As much as the management and staff of Southside Bingo would like to do all this without disruption to the valued patrons of Southside Bingo, a task of this scale cannot be achieved through

Family Fun day successTHE Mount Gravatt Hawks have enjoyed an exciting and diverse past two months. The club’s Family Fun and Charity Day was held on Sunday, August 5. It was the third year running for this event and the weather was fantastic this year and the turnout was even better. The day consisted of a junior carnival for the Hawks’ under six to 11 teams and activities such as rides and face painting. It was a huge day, which finished with the main match of the day being the Premier Men’s side taking on Pine Hills in a strongly contested match with the Hawks taking the points in a 2-1 win and advancing their chances at making the finals.Apart from the great fun on the day, there was a serious side and that was to raise money for the charities selected this year, which included The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia

Seven Rockets fire at meetTHE Southside Rockets Swim Club sent a team of seven swimmers to compete at the Brisbane Short Course Sprint Championships at Chandler.Danyon Muller, Cooper Brien, Jake Goldsworthy, Savannah Thompson, Darren Muller, Blake Muller and Matthew Blyth all met the fast qualifying times required to compete at the event and gave great personal bests on the day.Cooper, Jake and Danyon also qualified to swim at the Queensland Short Course Sprint Championships at Chandler on August 25-26.Stephen Ballhause, the Southside Rockets coach, said: “I’m pleased that all our swimmers did their best and we are looking forward to the upcoming summer season.”Club nights at Southside Rockets will start on Friday, October 12 and are held fortnightly on Fridays starting at 6.30pm sharp. If you are interested in joining up for the 2012-13

season, you can contact the club via their email [email protected] and attention your inquiry to club secretary Berny Abbott. There will also be a sign-on day and barbecue at the Sam Riley Mt Gravatt East Pool (corner Newnham and Wecker Rds Mansfield) on Saturday, September 15 from 7.30 to noon.

and Adrian Davies Family Trust. All proceeds from the day, including match fees, were donated to those worthy causes. The club thanks all the people who participated and gave money or their time on the day to make it another successful event. What a season the Hawks had in their juniors this season. They started off in April with inclement weather causing no end of grief with regards to training and matches but since then the weather Gods looked upon the club favourably, allowing all of its young girls and boys to get out and thoroughly enjoy themselves either wearing the famous green and gold of Mt Gravatt or within our in-house competition for the under sixes and sevens. The age co-ordinators, coaches and managers did fantastic jobs in terms of making the club a happy place to be during the winter months and the progress in the juniors has been immeasurable to say the least as a result of their efforts.Zova has been a stunning success in terms of allowing players to enhance their playing skills to the beat of the blaring music rhythm. All the kids look forward to their opportunities to partake in this program at the club with the highlight being the opportunity Zova provided with a visit from Brisbane Roar captain Matt Smith to the club.As the season comes to a close, the Hawks can look back on what has been a very successful six months and look forward to the junior presentation day on Sunday September 16, a well-deserved off season and the opportunity to come back bigger and better than ever in 2013.The seniors had a slow start to the season. The football played was great, but unfortunately the results did not run their way. The second half of the season has seen the Hawks’ Premier side surge back into finals contention.
