Residents in battleto stop pre-schoolBY GABRIELLE STUART

A battle over a proposed pre-school in Opawa will be decided this week.

Christchurch developer DLOT Investments has applied for con-sent to build a pre-school for up to 70 children on Cholmondeley Ave.

But a group of residents in the area are fighting the application.

They say the pre-school will cause

problems with traffic and noise in what was a quiet residential area.

Reeves Rd resident David Grant said some of his neighbours were considering leaving the area if the proposal went ahead.

Vehicle access for the pre-school would be on Reeves Rd, which is a dead-end street.

He said that all but three resi-dents on the street were opposed to

the plan.“Not all residents were given

the opportunity to respond to the application, only those that were deemed to be likely affected by the pre-school operation. The reality is that all residents of Reeves Rd will be affected by this facility if it goes ahead.”

But developer Jeremy Thomas said he had made a concerted ef-

fort to discuss the proposal with as many of the neighbours as possible.

“A number of these neighbours provided very positive feedback.  Their general comments were that the proposal was well designed, provided more than enough car parking and that they enjoyed the sound of children playing and laughing.”

Somerfield dancer Olivia Russell plans to use a $5000 scholarship to help the elderly and disadvantaged in her community through dance.

Through her business, Dance Outreach NZ, she hopes to offer free dance classes and performances in the community.

The scholarship was one of 12 awarded across the country, and was selected from 43 other applicants in Canterbury.

Each regional scholarship recipient is awarded $5000 to ‘do their thing’, and an ad-ditional top up of up to $5000 will be given to one of the regional scholarship recipi-ents at the AMP Scholarships National Awards evening on December 4.

AdviceFirst chief executive Mark Ennis said Ms Russell had been a dancer since the age of four, and her passion had never wavered.

“Now she wants to sup-port her community here in Christchurch through her Dance Outreach programme. We look forward to watching her move this dream forward.

“We’re delighted the $5000 AdviceFirst Canterbury Regional Scholarship, will be put to good use with a person whose values of passion, hard

work and determination aligns with that of our team. The fact that the benefits of Olivia’s dream will be to the elderly and disadvantaged in the local area is a bonus.”

Ms Russell said she was thrilled to receive the schol-

arship, and would use the money towards providing a theatre venue to launch Dance Outreach NZ into the com-munity.

“I believe that establishing a dance company and providing Kiwi dance students a place to gain the experience required for the profession would help keep more of New Zealand’s talent here on our home turf.

Through Dance Outreach NZ, our community will re-ceive world-class performanc-es, classes and scholarships for further training.

To get involved or find out more about Dance Outreach NZ, contact Ms Russell through her dance training school, Dance Mas-ters International.

Linwood residents believe the area has been forgotten, and hope a new community group will high-light local issues.

Five people have already put their hands up to join the group, but about 10 will be needed to start it.

Resident Islay McLeod said Linwood didn’t have a voice.

“There is no group regularly coming to the table and represent-ing the community, to put local issues forward.”

Those issues ranged from

small changes to the streetscape, to crime and city council decisions about the area.

Ms McLeod said her car had been broken into twice recently, while a power company had installed “unsightly” lights in the area which lit up her house, and broadband boxes had been installed in the middle of the footpath.

She hoped a residents group could have input into similar is-sues in the future.

She said the people in Linwood

were fantastic, but things happened in the area “that wouldn’t happen in Meri-vale.”

“The issue for us is that stuff just happens to Linwood. It doesn’t happen with Linwood and in a lot of cases it doesn’t happen for Linwood.”

She said people in the area came from a range of backgrounds, and she would like to see a range of people represented, including youth.

“There are a lot of issues for young people in Linwood, because there’s not a lot of things for young

people to do in Linwood. If they’re not involved you end up with old coots like me organising these things. If this is going to be the city of the future, we need to be building it for the young people of the city, who could be my age by the time it’s finished.”

Ms McLeod also serves on the Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board, and said she did not want to lead the group because of pos-sible conflicts of interest.

She said roles in the group were still to be decided.

If you are interested in joining the group, email [email protected].

Push for a better Linwood

COLOUR: The community in Linwood is rallying to try to brighten the com-munity with projects like the Avonside Girls’ High School mural on Linwood Ave. But in much of the suburb, residents are still feeling overlooked.

•From page 1He said his consultants had de-

termined that the noise and traffic effects on the surrounding area will be “less than minor”.

“It is our expectation that once the centre is up and running, that even those who currently have concerns will recognise that it is a positive addition to the neighbour-hood.”

He said that pre-schools were

part of the social fabric of a com-munity.

“While I appreciate that develop-ment of a pre-school represents a change to the neighbourhood, my own personal view is that early childhood centres are a fundamen-tal piece of social infrastructure and should be part of the community.”

But Mr Grant said there were already pre-schools in the com-munity.

“The reality is that there is no demand for an additional large scale pre-school in the local Opawa/St Martins area. We have canvassed operators of pre-school facilities in the area, and all but one have vacancies. One has opened up in recent months, and some are  struggling for num-bers.”

When he purchased his house in 2008, he said the area had

historical precinct status.“This appealed to us at the

time, however, seems to have been forgotten by council post-earthquake. We enjoy our quiet residential neighbourhood, how-ever, this ambience is likely to be sorely tested if this development goes ahead.”

The city council resource consent hearing is to be held on Friday.

So what is your role at the mo-ment?

I actually designed my role. I’m the health and well-being co-ordi-nator at the cottage. Basically I run programmes for people all about well-being. At the heart of things, for me, I worry about children. And I figure if you can help mum be well you help the children, it’s that simple. Well-being is about good health but it’s also about overall well-being and social in-teraction and having family – and that’s what the cottage does for people.

So tell me about some of the programmes you organise?

One of the biggest things at the moment is to model good food and healthy eating. We’ve had someone come in and show us how to make an organic garden on a slab of concrete, and we’ve also got the vege co-op. I’ve been here 13 years, and since I have been here there are now about 300 families in the area getting fresh fruit and veges that didn’t use to, and that’s a huge coup for me.

I always have veges for break-

fast, and the other thing I like to do is I come in in the morning and cook my own breakfast while I’m standing chatting to the commu-nity. The number of times people come in and say how do you make vegetables smell like that – and just like that you’ve got them. That’s one part of what I do.

The other part is we’re work-ing with beneficiaries who are needing to get back into work, and that’s easier said than done for most people. A lot of people volunteer here, and then we can give them references and there are little training opportunities along the way. I also do CVs with them, helping them to record their dreams and passions. Our clients feel proud of what they are when they see it on paper, and that’s re-ally important.

It sounds like there’s a lot of variety.

We’ve had some weird and wacky stuff here. A lot of people who come here have been privy to things that they wouldn’t have seen otherwise, so people get some more insight about what’s out there in the world and that’s an amazing thing.

What was your background before you started at the cot-tage – did you come from other community work?

Not at all. I was in real estate. But in real estate I was doing com-munity work with my clients more than selling houses, I was just that sort of person. The Beckenham

Service Centre has been amaz-ing, and allowed me to do a lot of training. I was a bit of a training junkie actually, but I have had to calm down over the last few years. But everything I have done comes back to the community.

You must have heard a lot of stories over the past 13 years.

The things that stand out to me are from the most dire situations. I can’t believe sometimes the stories I have heard in this place. They’re the saddest, most horrific things you can hear, but these people are still out there working hard and trying to do the best they can for their families and children. It’s just the tenacity and the strength

people have, that they don’t know they’ve got.

There’s too many stories. There’s been a few tears over the years, but I’ve also got intense pride in these people.

That’s one reason I’ve always shared about my illness, because I know that cancer touches many people. Last year there were four of us going through breast cancer at the same time, and a couple of them were really on their own. It has been an amazing opportunity to sit with these people, sometimes on a daily basis, and chat. People can be very fearful of what’s going on, and I don’t have all the answers but at least we can talk about it.

Cancer patient all about creatingIsabella Kilkelly has been working as a co-ordinator at the Waltham Community Cottage for the past 13 years. When she was told this year her breast cancer had spread, her co-workers set up a Givealittle page to help raise funds for her treatment. She spoke to Gabrielle Stuart

Tania BostockTania Bostock has lived in Nelson for ten years. She has always had an interest in art, and because of the success of her paintings it was a natural progression to become a full-time Artist. The majority of my artworks for this exhibition are ultimately about connections and relationships. Each panel has been divided into two portions reflecting different elements, or relationships. When displayed as a group they could represent the different dynamics between people as a whole. Each unique in appearance, all have something beautiful to offer.

Tania Bostock, ‘The Past’

David CarsonSelf taught artist born in 1968, Nelson.I live near Tapawera in the Tasman District on our family farm with my wife and three daughters.I have exhibited throughout New Zealand and have work in collections in New Zealand and abroad. My work is generally concerned with material and process. I source my materials from close to hand, as much as possible from the small farm I inherited from my parents in the middle Motueka River Valley.I use processes that are within my experience and if possible simple. Hand over tool, tool over machine, simple technology over higher technology. All rules are broken - some material comes from off site (e.g. paint, glue), some processes are complex and reliant on higher technology (e.g. band-saw, epoxy resin). positive energy for communitySo the support goes both ways?Absolutely. People here have

helped me in so many ways. When I was going in for chemo some of the guys here made up a song about me. It was very humorous, about all my hair falling out – it was a hoot.

We have had young mums here with cancer and severe illnesses, and it makes it better for them to be able to come and chat, so I think I’ve been kind of useful.

It’s the small things too. I have diabetes too, and even today because the cottage was so busy someone asked me, Bella, have you eaten? It’s been amazing to have so many people around that care.

I have been sustained all these years because of the like-mind-edness of my co-workers and the management team here, and the people who have been drawn to the cottage by our vision. That’s the magic of this place, that’s the backbone.

When were you first diagnosed with cancer?

When I was 34-years-old. I was living in Australia, and I had two boys on my own. That was when I moved back, because I was afraid my children would be left there alone, but I survived another 20 years. I think cancer changed the path of my life.

Was that how you started work at the cottage?

No, it just happened. I just went to a support group at The Women’s

Centre, and they asked me if I wanted a job, and I had never done community work before but I loved it.

I actually volunteered at the cot-tage, because I was quite sick and going nuts at home, and then a job came up here.

When did you tell your co-workers about the cancer?

Last year. It was a terrible day because I wasn’t expecting the reaction. I just thought today is the day, everyone is here so I may as well tell them. So I told them, and they all started howling. I wasn’t expecting it, so I just didn’t know what to do.

Was it your co-workers who set up the Givealittle page?

Yes, they set it up about three weeks ago. I’m buying medicine from a little company in Alaska which collects products from across the world, so it’s quite expensive. I ran out of money for a little while and didn’t take them, and I noticed a difference.

They’re probably not going to cure cancer, but it does make a lot of difference to my health and wellness. I have done all the treat-ments, but anything you can do alongside it does help. I get tired like anyone else but I can keep going.

The thing I have come to ap-preciate most is energy. To me, life is such a struggle without it. It’s so hard to be present without it, to do

normal things like look after your kids and go to the supermarket.

Tell me about your family – you have two children?

Yes, two boys. They’re all grown up, and one’s in Christchurch and one’s living on the coast. And I’ve got two grandchildren.

Were you born and raised in Christchurch?

Yes, I travelled all around the world but I came back to Christ-church. It was family that brought me back.

What do you like the most about the city?

This will sound terrible, but I love the brokenness of Christ-church because I totally believe that through brokenness the most

magic things happen. That’s some-thing I’ve seen in my own life.

Do you have any hobbies out-side your work?

The thing I do to make my heart sing is go to gospel singing in Lyttelton. I am blown away by it. I can’t sing for nuts, but these people don’t seem to mind. Again it’s that community, a group stand-ing together. We don’t know each other from a bar of soap but we get together and make this incredible sound.

In the future, are there ways you would like to see the work or programmes at the cottage expand?

From what I have been working on lately, I see more outreach with maybe migrant groups. Person-ally, working with CVs, I have had a few more people accessing me from other countries. I think this place could be a bit of a catalyst for people.

I think at the cottage presently people are learning how to make themselves happy, and I think there’s something in that. We had a woman come in and do some gardening the other day, and she came back to us with a beautiful plan drawn out for the garden. [Last week] we had a sale at the neighbourhood day, to raise mon-ey for plants to make that happen. It’s pretty cool. People that come here love this place, and they’re really mindful to keep it lovely, because it’s their home. I want that to continue.

COMMUNITY: Bella runs health and well-being classes and workshops for job hunters at the Waltham Community Cottage.

BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD

An Addington dog owner travelled across town to receive free and discounted treatment for his two dogs at a dog welfare clinic last last week.

The clinic took place in Aranui, but some people brought their dogs from other suburbs to make the most of the initiative.

Kim Campin, of Addington, brought his dogs Weeman and Sha-Dow to the clinic after reading about it on Facebook.

The bull-mastiff cross and aus-tralian staffordshire received free microchipping, and discounted worm and flea treatment and desexing.

He said the treatments offered at the clinic were cheap compared to having it done elsewhere.

It was usually very expensive to own dogs, especially when you had two, he said.

Mr Campin said the clinic pro-vided a really good service.

“If its going to stop abandoned dogs and things it is good.”

Owners of a range of dogs, from staffordshires to chihuahuas, queued up for the treatments which included free microchipping and advice, and discounted desexing and worm and flea treatment.

The clinic was organised by SPCA Canterbury, city council animal control and Housing New Zealand to combat the number of

dog related issues in the Eastern suburbs.

SPCA Canterbury marketing and communications manager Raina Roberts said there were people queuing around the corner with their dogs when the clinic started.

Aranui local Fleur Murdoch brought her chi-chon in to receive all the treatments available and said it was a “fantastic service”.

She said without the clinic, a lot of the dogs there would not have

received the treatments at all.“A lot of these dogs wouldn’t

have been done.”She said she would definitely

come back to the clinic, in spite of how long the line was.

SPCA Canterbury chief ex-ecutive Barry Helem said he was pleased with the turn out with over 100 dogs brought in.

He said another clinic was already scheduled for the last weekend of November, and would consider doing more following last week’s success.

Port Hills National list MP Nuk Korako gave his maiden speech in Parliament last week.

I come from a working-class background. My father Te Here Maaka Momo Korako was a World War 2 returned service-man and a freezing worker and my mother, Hine Elizabeth Manihera Korako a gentle and loving person, who passed away when I was only 10-years-old leaving behind nine children, me and eight sisters.

It was not long before we found ourselves in Cholmon-deley Children’s Home, to give our father time to organise life without our mother. This sad event started a relationship with me and Cholmondeley home that continues to this day. My

father worked hard to keep us together and to ensure that we all understood and lived by our family values and instilled in me the significance of ancestry, leader-ship, education and humility.

He taught us to be proud of being who we were and the importance of being able to move seamlessly between the two worlds of the Maori and non-Maori . . .

The myth that National is simply there to look after the wealthy has been seriously challenged in this past election. Thousands upon thousands of voters abandoned their tradi-

tional roots to give their party vote to National because there was a greater accord with what they wanted in a government. Voters responded to the quality of leadership and have been drawn to a unified party that really did care and still does passionately, about what matters to

New Zealanders.I am sure that working New

Zealanders have new expecta-tions of themselves. New gen-erations certainly understand that the state is not here to provide their every need. They genuinely believe that govern-ment is a partnership – us and

them, and we each have to tow our own weight.

Labour may purport to represent the working New Zealander but a bevy of career bureaucrats does not reflect the aspirations of the young check-out person at the Ferrymead Countdown, or the Lyttelton wharfie, or the process worker in Bromley who all want to bet-ter their lives with jobs, fair pay, home ownership and the likes. Preaching working class from Ponsonby, really does fall upon deaf ears.

I reject the idea that National does not represent those Kiwis struggling for a better life for their families and their com-munities.

That is exactly what we do. That is why I am here.

Nuk’s first Parliament speech

Cockram Kia has enabled Science Alive to get out into the community, with the sponsorship of a new Kia Rio.

Since losing the Science Alive building in the Canterbury earth-quakes, the organisation has had to adapt its business model to become a science centre without walls.

All of the Science Alive educa-tional and community outreach programmes are now operated out in the community, at schools, li-braries and within school holiday programmes.

One of the outreach programmes, Mindball for Schools, has recently celebrated its 100th session, and has recently launched Corporate Mind-ball for the workplace.

Science Alive community pro-gramme manager Karen Tait said it would not have been possible without the sponsorship support of Cockram Kia.

“Having this car has been an im-

mense help to what we can achieve out in the community,”

Cockram Kia Christchurch brand manager Rob Manning has been instrumental in providing the car sponsorship to Science Alive.

“We are very happy to support the trust and what they are doing for science and technology within the community,” he said.

“Science Alive are proud to be working with Cockram Kia and particularly with this zippy, smaller car, from the rain sensing wipers to its bluetooth functionality, this car lines up to Kia’s leading new car technology,” Science Alive CEO Neville Petrie said.

When asked if he was happy with the car, Mr Petrie replied: “Abso-lutely! Who wouldn’t be in a world of science and technology?”

Science Alive would like to keep the community outreach pro-grammes in place when the new science centre is eventually built.

Halswell United’s under-15 team won the New Zealand Junior Football Club Cup last weekend, beating sides from Auckland, Wel-lington and Waikato in the pro-cess.

Captain Mason Stearn said the tournament had been a great test of their abilities.

“The level of football was a step up from what we have been used to playing here in the South Is-land. The speed, power and skill level of players caught us a wee bit

off guard in the early stages of the tournament.”

Having made the semi-finals, the team’s technical skills and tactics started to pay off, and they ran out 3-0 winners over fellow Christchurch club FC Twenty11.

“We totally controlled the semi-final from start to finish, winning the majority of territory and pos-session,” said centreback Cullen Neame.

That set up a final against

Onehunga Sports, which they won 1-0.

“We needed to press hard and prevent the Onehunga boys from running at us and then make the most of our ability to keep posses-sion and attack quickly,” said Luke Fowler, scorer of the cup-winning goal.

“They were big and strong and held the ball really well, but our resolve in defence held out and our counter attack created more chances to score then they did.”

Q A&HOW LONG SHOULD I KEEP HOME-MADE MAYONNAISE?Opinions differ, but I wouldaim to use it within a week, especially if madewithlemon juice rather thanvinegar. Always use thefreshest eggs and store inthe fridge (though not thecoldest part). As well asserving with salads, trymayo on your bread insteadof butter, as a dip withchips, and in hamburgers.Add crushed garlic tomake

aioli, or chopped capers, gherkins and parsley fortartare sauce to serve withfried fish. Mayonnaisedoesn’t freeze well.

WHY DO MOST BAKING RECIPESCALL FOR SUGAR, AND CAN ILEAVE IT OUT?Sugar helps with colour, texture, moistness andrising as well as flavour, and you can’t usually skip itwithout affecting thefinished product. However, you can often reduce theamounts of sugar called for,

adding artificial sweetenerto boost the flavour ifnecessary (note that onlysome brands of artificialsweetener are suitable forcooking purposes). Alsodon’t forget that crackers, cheese biscuits and sconesare often sugar-free,likewisemany breads androlls.

"The fresher theoil, the better thequality of yourdish.”

HOWmany differentoils do you havestored in yourpantry? Recentresearch from

international scan data companyAztec indicates households havean average of 2.9 types of oil. However, once a bottle is

opened and the oil is exposed tooxygen, it begins to losefreshness and flavour.Obviously, the fresher the oil,the better the quality of yourdish.

To this end, oil producer AlfaOne has introduced two extravirgin olive oils cold-pressedfrom olives within a few hours ofbeing picked. The two Umbrianolive varieties, leccino andfrantoio, are grown and pressed

by an Italian family in Australia, and the oil shipped to NewZealand stored in controlledconditions. Leccino extra virginolive oil is mild and smooth, great for dressings, sauces, pastas and low-heat frying.Frantoio is full-bodied and

fruity, suitable for stronger-flavoured dishes such asbarbecuemarinades orcasseroledmeats andwell-flavoured tomato delights. Useat low temperatures to preservethe flavours.

Brown rice oil is anothernewbie to themarket. Unlike thetwo olive oils, this one is suitablefor high temperature cooking.Brown rice grains are pressed

once, resulting in an oil high inantioxidants. Although excellentfor frying it can also be used inbaking and dressings.Peanut oil is highly regarded

as one of the best for cookingAsian dishes. Recently, Pics, thepeanut butter connoisseurs fromNelson, introduced a fine oilmade fromAustralian-grownpeanuts, which are cold pressed. It is high in unsaturated fats andhas a high smoke point, makingit ideal for grills, satays and stir-fries.

Into a large pot, place the dried fruit, butter, sugar, brandy or orange juice and cold tea or water. Stir over heat until butter is melted and sugar dissolved. Simmer, covered, for 10 minutes, then cool to

room temperature. Heat oven to 150 deg C. Stir in orange and lemon rind. Add treacle and eggs, then sift and add dry ingredients. Mix in with gentle, folding movements. Spread mixture evenly into the prepared pan then decorate the top with almonds. Bake for 2½ to 3 hours. When the cake comes out of the oven, splash a little extra brandy over the top of the cake. Cover hot cake with a tea towel, cool in pan.

On Tuesday, the Linwood College Year 7 & 8 volleyball team went to a volleyball tournament at the Lincoln Events Centre. We were one of seven schools who went to the event. It was loud and heaps of fun. We won four of our games, out of seven. We came seventh in the competition out of ten teams. We worked as a team and had a good time.

There are mice in Ms Mora’s science lab. Their names are the school houses. One of the mice was pregnant and then it had babies. There are three boys and four girls they all look the same. They have started to grow their fur but their eyes are still closed.

‘Tuning In’ was our new Challenge for this term ‘Grass to Glass.’ The students were involved in a number of rotations during the morning including a range of fun activities including making smoothies, milk and cow related computer games and taste testing of milk. The focus of this Challenge is the technological process that gets milk from the cow, to the shops and into our houses.

Learning with Digital Technologies

In technology we are making garden tools. Students are really interested in making them. How we made them? First we had to look at the model of our project and the paper model. Then we had to have a test about garden tools. Students are doing very well cutting metal and wood and also with measuring and bending things.

HEALTH

Antioxidants are your best friendWe hear a lot about the need to increase antioxidants in our diet, but many find the word itself baffling.

Most of us do our best to eat the right food and get the right amount of exercise when and where we can, drinking truckloads of water and spending the day visiting the toilet as a consequence. And now we’re frequently hear-ing this term antioxidant, which sounds like a free radical party waiting to happen.

We hear the French have one of the highest antioxidant-rich diets, but it’s not like we’re going to start speaking French and chomping on snails and frogs legs every night of the week to get our load and feel included.

So what are they and why are they so good?

Antioxidants are natural sub-stances that are considered to delay or prevent cell damage. They are found in a range of foods, espe-cially plants – vegetables and fruit. Examples are citrus fruits, berries, (especially cranberries, blueberries and blackberries), tomatoes, nuts, colourful vegetables such as red cabbage and red/orange capsicum, green teas and, of course, choco-late.

It is vitamins A, C and E and

beta-carotene and phytochemi-cals such as lutein, lycopene and selenium that are considered to be antioxidants and found in many of the foods listed above.

Antioxidants (otherwise known as free radical scavengers) work by reducing the destructive activity of roaming, highly reactive ‘free radicals’; interacting and neutralis-ing them from causing damage to our DNA and the cells in our bodies. Free radical damage occurs from exposure to certain chemi-cals, high alcohol consumption, smoking, pollution, sun exposure and as a byproduct of our normal metabolism.

When oxygen in our bodies is not correctly converted, it then becomes known as an oxygen molecule with a free molecule also known as a “free radical” look-ing for a mate, which will then go on and cause damage to almost any cell to become a pair; causing destruction in its path.

Free radicals are considered to contribute to the ageing process and formation of chronic diseases such as cancers, heart disease, stroke and Alzheimer’s disease. Oxidative stress in the body oc-curs when the production of free radicals is beyond the ability of the body’s own defences. So additional

antioxidant consumption will help to minimise the damage to your cells from roaming free radicals, due to blocking their destruc-tive activity. Some antioxidants are made naturally by the body, while the rest come from food and beverages.

Countries that have a high consumption of plant foods are reported to have lower rates of heart disease and cancers amongst their population and tend to have a longer life expectancy.

Getting antioxidants through food is considered the most effec-tive and safe way to acquire them so it is not necessary to stock up on large amounts of antioxidant supplements.

Bear in mind the jury is still out on the true health benefits of an-tioxidants, it may not be all about antioxidants in themselves, but the combination of the vitamins, min-erals, enzymes and antioxidants found in vegetables and fruit that have the disease halting/prevent-ing powers.

So, get to the spring markets and stock up. Start eating your berries and chocolate cake for their anti-oxidant properties.

•Jane Logie is a medicinal herbalist, clinical nutritionist and chef.

The good guys may be some of your best weapons in preventing cell damage, writes Jane Logie

Presence of mind is how Michael describes his work. Now in his 15th year of exhibiting and painting for this exhibition,

e Board Room, he will showcase 14 stunning and challenging paintings.

e artist suggests that the key to his work is passion. He says people can mistake passion for arrogance and it is better to let the work talk for itself. He operates in a di erent world from other people because of his practice and mindset, he says, which leaves him nding it di cult to interact with others verbally in fear of being misunderstood. He hopes the viewer will nd truth in his work.

“Ultimately, all artists ever want is for people to understand their work the waythe artist sees or intends it,” he says.

e painted board theme is a relatively new concept, and Michael believes he has

New exhibition‘stunning and challenging’

nally found the right vehicle to express his thoughts. ese paintings with a New Zealand avour are painted on wooden packing case lids and are heavily textured.

In his paintings, old and new worlds are merging and the viewer is likely to see recurring themes of sofas, sperm whales and ever-present dreamboats.

ere are also three-dimensional orbs that weigh heavy on our souls yet remain suspended and are intended to make us think about ourselves. Luminous traces of gold, bronze and silver permeate the surface of translucent seas of overlapping circles. Faceless shadowy gures appear behind veils, gesturing their actions and deep thoughts.

Michael is always exploring and pushing the boundaries with his work and is known mainly for his large elaborate canvases that depict interior/exterior motives of a New

Zealand oceanic world. ese paintings are purchased quickly and unfortunately don’t get viewed at length by the wider public.

is new exhibition is raw and honest and comes from a place of passion and integrity, Magma Gallery director Barbara Simsch says, and they are excited about mounting the exhibition.

“Michael Holland is an undeniable talent operating from a conscious state that he

calls ‘ e Practice’, which produces striking, subconscious, resonating works that are captivating. We are pleased to exhibit the paintings of this recognised talent and invite people to experience a fascinating collection.”

“When we treat the gut and the liver, the immune system bene ts. Although people with seasonal allergies caused by pollen may still need to take antihistamine, the detoxi cation will make the antihistamine more e ective,” Simone says.

“People can also lose weight with detoxi cation because they lose excess uid, and the fat cells, where the toxins are stored, are broken down as the toxins are released.”

e Apothecary has been in operation for a year at e Tannery, and Simone says people’s interest in herbal treatments is increasing as they realise how they can improve their health by drinking herbal teas and taking other herb-based products.

for different hair types

Finding a great hairdresser that has the skills to create the best style for your hair type can be difficult, but at My Hair & Beauty the qualified

stylists all have their own area of expertise. My Hair & Beauty has two separate salons

– one for hair styling and the other for a range of beauty and massage treatments with Naomi including manicures and pedicures with Vinylux polishes that last longer than normal nail polish but can be easily removed. The beauty salon has recently acquired the beautiful French skin care range La Biosthetique which can be used together to suit different types of skin. Other services include eyelash and eyebrow tinting and waxing.

In the hair salon, Korean hairdresser Sue and Chisa from Japan have years of experience in many countries and now offer great services to all nationalities, while Kathy looks after the “senior girls”, says owner Wendy Philipse, who bought the salon in February last year. The other two stylists in the My Hair & Beauty team are Emma from Ireland and Wendy who both share a passion for colour and the importance of haircare.

The salon caters to men, women and children, with incredibly reasonable prices using Redken, L’Oreal, Pureology and GHD products.

Summer is the perfect time for adding lighter tones with foils or a full colour, and My Hair & Beauty also caters for the busy wedding season and special styles for the races or Christmas parties.

My Hair & Beauty is located in (busy) Peerswick Mall in the heart of Church Corner, just across from Bush Inn. The hairdressing salon is open Monday to Saturday from 9am until 5pm and on Thursdays until 8pm, while beauty and massage therapist Naomi works Tuesdays to Saturdays and also has a late night on Thursday.

To book your beauty appointment, telephone Wendy and the team at My Hair & Beauty on 348 2782, or visit their website at www.my-hair-and-beauty.co.nz.

A new health & beauty store you will loveBrett Heaney and his team at

Christchurch’s newest Homestead Health and Beauty outlet at The Palms are thrilled with their

brand-new store and its extensive range of products.

The store, which is located near Countdown in The Palms, opened on September 20, and is the third Homestead Health and Beauty in the city – the other two are at The Hub Hornby and the Bush Inn Centre, Upper Riccarton.

Store manager Debbie Coulter has already gained considerable experience in the natural health and beauty industry, having managed three health shops in Wellington. She is assisted by Jenny Pierce, who previously worked at the original Homestead Health and Beauty in New Brighton. Jenny says, many former customers from that store have been very pleased to find the new store at The Palms.

With their qualifications and experience, Debbie and Jenny ensure that customers will benefit from their knowledge and expertise in all aspects of natural health and beauty, and they offer friendly, professional advice

on the most suitable products for people’s health and skin care needs.

“We have one of the largest ranges of natural health and beauty products in Christchurch, which includes our very popular everyday specials on some of our most popular items, for example, fish oil, glucosamine and protein powders in our sport zone section,” Debbie says.

New Homestead Health and Beauty, The Palms, Shirley, located next to Lotto shop, Countdown end, phone 385 0364.

Homestead Health and Beauty, The Hub Hornby, phone 349 5150.

Homestead Health and Beauty, The Bush Inn Centre, phone 348 7867.

“We look forward to building up a new customer base on this side of the city, and hope to develop strong relationships with everyone, from young families to mature adults, as the other Homestead Health and Beauty stores have done.”

Another benefit for customers is the long-established loyalty club, which rewards them with discounts and special offers. All three Homestead Health and Beauty stores offer an exceptional shopping experience, as has been demonstrated in recent customer satisfaction survey responses, which showed that 100 per cent of customers were “extremely happy” with the services offered.

“We welcome the opportunity to meet with you at The Palms store, and assist in helping you improve your health.”

T he management team at Onyx Homes are arguablyunrivaled in the home building sector. With years of

experience and having previously built one of NZ’s largestnationwide building companies, at which time had won moreMaster Build Awards than any other company in the country, home building has become second nature.

Richard Freeman director of Onyx Homes says “people needto be very careful and it’s a real concern with a lot of these new“so called” building companies entering the marketwith management at the helm with no clue on how abuilding company actually runs. We are seeing plumbersand electricians starting up building companies here in

Christchurch to get a foot in the door. People should alwaysgo with a Registered Master Builder to ensure they are ingood hands and their asset is well protected”.

With the client and their best intentions at the forefront oftheir company philosophy and a driven passion to get itright every-time has been the success of Onyx Homes.

From concept design through to handing you the keys of yournew home we guarantee you only the best experience.

Our sole goal is to deliver a superior product on time withthe best price that sets the benchmark for the buildingindustry, and continue to raise the bar.

weight loss

An extract of a small pumpkin-like fruit called Garcinia cambogia from India

and Asia has shown itself to greatly assist weight management and overall health. In fact, many have found it to increase fat loss by two to three times greater than normal. Even The Dr. Oz Show on television noted it is the most effective and fastest working natural supplement to support weight loss.

Even without exercise and diet changes, many have found it beneficial although even better and quicker results are often obtained with extra exercise and an improved diet.

The extract of this amazing fruit is called hydroxycitric acid (HCA) or CitriMax. Research has shown HCA to help suppress the appetite, reduce cravings, feel fuller for longer, increase energy levels, help prevent fat from being made and stored in the body, increase lean muscle mass, increase serotonin levels

itn the brain that help control mood and sleep (great for emotional eaters), improve cholesterol levels that may help reduce the chances of strokes and cardiovascular disease, help prevent sugar spikes as well as other health benefits.

It is considered a very safe supplement (although check first if you are on medication) as it has been used for centuries as a flavouring agent and digestive aid.

To obtain reliable results, it is important to take a product that contains a standardised extract of 60 per cent HCA and also take the recommended amount as used in the clinical research. Some supplements also contain ChromeMate, a well-researched form of niacin-bound chromium to help improve the results even more.

For further advice, visit Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy at 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton or call at phone 388 5757.

Belly fatExcessive fat accumulation around the belly not

only affects the way you look but increases the risk for diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer and stroke. This fat accumulation can

lead to early death. The good news is belly fat (abdominal fat) can be

reduced fairly easily and this may reduce the chance of serious disease.

Exercising regularly, drinking plenty of pure water,

increasing fibre intake, reducing or eliminating sugar, reducing carbohydrate intake, having smaller meals regularly and having more protein with each meal can make a difference.

The right supplements may also improve results considerably for many people.

Garcinia cambogia (Super CitriMax) provides hydroxycitric acid (HCA) that researchers have found to help stop fat being made and stored in the body. It is also effective at suppressing the appetite, reducing cravings and keeping you feeling fuller for longer. For effective results it should be taken 45 to 60 minutes before each meal.

SafSlim is a product that has been shown in one study to reduce belly fat up to six times faster over a 16-week period while at the same time increasing lean muscle. One tablespoon of the great tasting syrup should be taken twice a day before meals. It is recommended to be used for a minimum of 16 weeks.

Replacing one or two meals a day with a high protein meal replacement drink has been found to be a very effective way of reducing weight quickly for many people. It seems with regular protein intake the body starts to use up fat stores.

A daily fibre drink and a lower bowel tonic can help improve weight loss and is also a great way of improving your health. A cider vinegar drink can improve digestion, overall health and the metabolic rate and has been found also to be very beneficially for weight loss.

Camper Care NZ Motorhome & Caravan Show

Now in its eighth year, if you thought the South Island Camper Care NZ Motorhome & Caravan Show - taking place at the newly renamed

Horncastle Arena in Christchurch from November 7 to 9 – is all about motorhomes and caravans, it certainly is but there’s also so much more to see and do over show weekend.

There will be a host of highlights including recent Masterchef NZ 2014 contestants Nikki and Jordan Shearer cooking up a storm at the Inspiration in the Kitchen cooking classes. Top 10 Holiday Parks will be again be hosting the free-of-charge Top 10 Rally for those wanting to stay the weekend and catch up with their fellow motorhome adventurers.

Other show favourites will include The Bucket List Travel Zone, where you’ll be able to find out information on the perfect region to visit, camping grounds or events to enjoy while travelling, along with the Traillite Seminar Series, a number of free seminars showcasing top tips, from buying a motorhome to making the most of your retirement.

Introduced for the first time last year, the Geraldine Classic Caravan Club will also be back again, showcasing a range of pre-70s classic caravans in the ‘Walk Down Memory Lane’ area of the show.

MONEY

A recent survey conducted by Colmar Brunton for the Financial Markets Authority shows that many New Zea-landers do not understand investment risk (see www.fma.govt.nz).

The survey results paint a picture of investors who show a reasonably good understanding of more conservative investments, which offer security and a reliable return, but lack un-derstanding of higher-risk growth investments such as property and shares.

Just under two thirds of respondents preferred more conservative investments, while only around a third were prepared to see the value of their investments go up and down in order to get the best return. The implica-tion is that lack of familiar-ity with growth investments leads investors to avoid them and, in so doing, they are not giving themselves

the opportunity to learn about them.

Fear and ignorance are confining investors to lower-risk, lower-return invest-ments. There is a danger that those with a lack of under-standing will make poor decisions.

Investor education is one way to solve these problems but this is easier said than done. Whose role is it to find investors and engage with them to improve their understanding of invest-ments and risk? If investors are comfortable with more conservative investments what will motivate them to learn about alternative investment opportunities?

There is potential for KiwiSaver to be a good learning tool. KiwiSaver providers offer a range of investment options with dif-

fering risk profiles. Investing in KiwiSaver

should be treated like any other investment. It is important for the investor to determine the most appro-priate balance between risk and return, to understand the different investment options and to monitor the performance. As KiwiSaver balances grow, investors will increase their familiar-ity with investing in higher risk assets for the benefit of higher returns.

It’s simply amatter ofstretching your targets

RussellBellBUSINESS ZEN

IT’STHEMIDDLE of Juneand 50 per cent of the yearis already almost behindus. Time flies when you are

having fun and, for many of us,that’s what this time of year isabout—with the ski seasonalmost here and others lookingfor winter escapes. It’s also a good time to look

ahead and plan for futuresuccess. Strategic planning isan essential component ofsuccessful business and I havetwo plans— one formyself andone for the business— both areintertwined.Formany of us, our

businesses are a reflection ofourselves, so it makes sensethat whenwe plan for ourbusiness(es), they reflect ourown goals and ambitions. So, what are you going to

achieve for the remainder ofthis year? What are yourtargets? Are you going to letlife happen or take astructured approach? It’s important that you set

goals for yourself and yourbusiness that energise, motivate, aremeasurable andattainable. However, you

shouldmake sure that you alsoset some stretch targets. My personal plan includes

revampingmy fitness and hasmany stretches . . . and stretchtargets! I have resolved toexercise at least three times aweek. I did start this columnwith the ‘‘time flies’’ statement, but it seems that in that fitnesstime, I can create an ability toslow time significantly or stopit entirely. So I am going to dust off the

previously unused stepmachine at home. And I will seta goal of ‘‘stepping’’ aparticular distance each day.Given that the garage isn’twarm, there is incentive to getmotivated. The stretch target is to

make this activity daily. OK,not much of a stretch, but rightnow I am about as fit as a BigMac is nutritious.

The key to stretch targets isthat they do just that; theystretch you to new levels ofperformance and, likemuscleswhen you exercise, you andyour business develop newstrengths as you achieve them.I know it won’t be easy—

particularly starting fromscratch— but I want to beexercising every day if I can. Sowhat do you dowhen thingsget toughwhen pursuing agoal? Instead of giving up, youget energised. And although itis a stretch, I believe it isattainable.Oncemy fitness returns, it

will be a goal achieved, and Iwill have developedmoreconfidence andwill feel bettertoo. It’s the same for goal setting

and strategic planning— setyour targets so you knowwhere you are going andinclude some stretch targets. The benefits to you and yourbusiness will be exponential.■ If you would like helpimplementing stretch targetsinto your strategic plan, giveZenith Solutions a call on 3479997.

Get goodadvice beforeinvesting overseas

It is not uncommon for NewZealanders to have overseasinvestments.Examplesmight be shares in

foreign companies, foreign unittrust investments, foreignsuperannuation schemes andforeign life insurance policies. There are some pitfalls in leaving

these investments overseas. If your overseas investments

have a value greater than $50,000,they could well be liable for tax inNew Zealand. This is called aForeign Investment Fund (FIF) tax. There are a number of options youcan choose from as to to calculate itand youwill need help from anaccountant or financial adviser.Certain overseas investments,

particularly Australian ones, areexempt from FIF tax.Under current NZ law, an

overseas adviser who providesinvestment advice to a NZ residentmust be an Authorised FinancialAdviser (AFA) as determined in theFinancial Advisers Act.Australian advisersmay in some

circumstances be exempt from this

requirement. Exemptions also applyto wholesale investors, for examplethose whose investment assets are$1million ormore. If, for example, you have a share

portfolio of around £200,000 in theUK onwhich personalisedinvestment advice is provided by abroker, the broker will be in breachof the Financial Advisers Act if he orshe is not registered as an AFA inNZ. Youwill not have the protectionof the code of conduct, disclosurerequire-ments anddisputeresolutionschemesthat aremandatoryfor AFAs.Finally,

having assets in currenciesother than the New Zealand dollarwill expose you to exchange raterisk.Obtaining advice from aNew

Zealand accountant or financialadviser on the implications ofleaving investment assets overseasis highly recommended.

Personals

Super Sales AchieverWe are seeking a super sales person to join our sales team.

With the Christchurch market very strong in the building and home market, the opportunities for advertising sales are very exciting.

Ideally applicants will have previous experience in media sales (but this is not essential), and we encourage anyone who believes they have the ability and passion to build advertising relationships and build on the success of these brands to apply. We are seeking a dedicated organized person with a determination to succeed.

Applicants should be able to work to targets and budgets, be able to build long-term sustainable relationships with our customers, build new business, and be an “ideas’’ person working in a team environment.

Remuneration and employment conditions are excellent.

The successful applicant will be based at The Christchurch Star Company located in central Christchurch.

The Christchurch Star Company is a diversified media business. Our flagship The Star is one of the country’s largest newspapers by circulation and the country’s only free metropolitan newspaper. The company also publishes six community newspapers, several lifestyle and trading magazines and award winning feature publications. Our growing online presence includes digital editions of all our newspapers, websites and New Zealand’s largest media facebook community. The company also organises two of the city’s most iconic annual events, The Star City 2 Surf and The Star Home and Leisure Show.

If you are a confident person seeking a challenge and are prepared to work under pressure but enjoy the rewards, you will love this opportunity.

Applications will be processed on a rolling basis until filled, so if this is of interest please send in your CV promptly.

The hottest thing to hit the eastside - the industrial chic Bower & Urban Cafe Corner - has a stunning new menu that is simply irresistible.

Lamb Duo: Herb crusted NZ Lamb Cutlet plus Lamb Shank, served with Pea Puree, roasted Herbed Potatoes and Rosemary jus...$30

Pork Fillet: Tender Pork Fillet seared and oven baked in its own juices with a Manuka & Pinot Noir reduction and accompanied with Kumara puree and roasted vegetables...$27

Smokey Burger: Delicious Beef Patty teamed with Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Bacon and Fries... $18

Chicken Breast: Pan seared and served with Mexican Rice, seasonal Vegetables, roasted Cashew Nuts, and Apricot-Passion Fruit glaze...$26

At the helm of the kitchen is Chef Paulo. Formerly of Michaels Restaurant, his cuisine reflects fine dining. Making the most of new season produce, Chef Paulo has created a fresh new menu that is modestly priced considering the high quality ingredients used and outstanding presentation of dishes.

Since opening in March, North New Brighton’s The Bower / Urban Corner Cafe Restaurant complex has received rave reviews for it’s innovative modern cuisine and industrial chic design. Constructed from shipping containers, a common response from new patrons is that the exterior does not do justice to the wealth of treasure within. The interior is stunning, and really must be seen to be appreciated.

Also launched is a separate $20 menu that is available daily in the adjoining Bower bar.
