People concerned about pollution leeching into the Heathcote River have made more than 40 com-plaints to Environment Canterbury in the last year and a half.

They include reports of oil, sewage, detergents and sediment run-off from new developments.

But residents in the area are working on their own solution.

Cracroft Girl Guiding Centre warden Trevena Wilson said girls at the centre used the Cashmere Stream, which runs into the river, for kayaking.

She said the group tried to keep the girls out of the water, because it was so dirty.

“I’ve never seen a girl fall in yet and we do have showers here if it does happen, but sometimes I won-der if the girls should be in it at all.”

But she hoped a solution to the

problems would not be far away.Since August, she is one of sev-

eral residents in the area who have tested the pollution levels of the water each week.

The results are sent to the Cash-mere Stream Care Group, which has been working for the past seven years to train and equip resi-dents to monitor the stream.

Chairman Ken Rouse said he be-lieved problems in the stream were contributing to problems in the Heathcote.

“A lot of the very light soils come from the hills. I think you’d find, of the sediment in the Heathcote, most is coming from Cashmere Stream.”

Spreydon-Heathcote Commu-nity Board member Helene Maut-ner said that sediment was one of the biggest causes of pollution in the river.

•From page 1“The sediment is a very

fine soil which washes down from the hills. When it gets in the water, because it is so fine, it remains suspended in the water. It blocks out the light and encourages things you don’t want to grow, and discourages the animal and plant life.”

About 50 residents attend-ed a workshop on the Heath-cote River in June, and came up with a list of pollution problems they would like to address.

Dr Mautner said they were already seeing progress.

Representatives of the group will visit the river with ECan scientists on Wednes-day, to look at solutions to problems caused by sedi-ment.

The scientists will look at parts of the river which could be planted, to prevent sediment from getting into the stream and to collect it when it did.

Dr Mautner said it was only the first step in a pro-cess which she believed would take years.

“Cleaning up the river is a long-term project because there are so many issues in-

volved. We would like to do it all at once, but that isn’t workable.”

Next year the group plan to turn their focus on solu-tions to other sources of pol-lution.

Those include forming a working group to investigate and prevent industrial and farming contamination, and working with the city coun-cil to prevent sewage over-flows.

Questions about the pol-lution management were put to ECan by the Southern View last week, but they did not respond.

TESTING: Cracroft Girl Guides test pollution levels in the Cashmere Stream, part of ongoing solutions to pollution problems that residents and groups in the area are developing themselves.

Perspiration saturates my skin as realisation dawns - I was facing a killer puffer fish…

Another early morning, YET AGAIN!!! I remember today we were going snorkeling (for the second time) but this time with a different company. It is another warm day, too warm a day in Aussie. As the tribe of “Heaps” stroll down the marina, we inevitably got lost. Then Connor my older brother, a man of many words, said “stick with the herd of tourists”. His words of wisdom saved us from our first peril. 1st peril: Getting lost at marina. 2nd peril: Mum seasick (NOT!! A pretty sight). 3rd peril: Putting on the wet suit (dad insisted “it will keep you warm”.... NOT) 4th peril: Finding the right fitting mask for your face, snorkel and flippers.

As you can see, there are a lot of perils but to stop you from wasting half your day reading the list I’ll go on. Anyway by then we were almost ready to hop into the warm, clear, colourful waters of the Great Barrier Reef.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I will list some animals in the reef and some will have a caution or dangerous note but keep in mind the chances of seeing them are slim. I did my research and I named my favourite 12 sea animals.

1 Humpback Whale 2 Green Turtle 3 Loggerhead Turtle 4 Olive Sea Snake - CAUTION 5 Whitetip Reef Shark 6 Blacktip Reef Shark 7 Reef Manta Ray 8 Red Firefish - CAUTION 9 Clown Fish 10 Humphead Maroi Wrasse 11 Blackspotted Puffer - CAUTION 12 Textile Coneshell - DANGEROUS

Non-important note/fact (opinionated note/fact) You will notice that I did not put caution on the sharks. Did you know they kill ten humans each year. We kill about 100 million of them yearly. They are very important at the top of the food chain. Remove these from the food chain and the Cortex Squid will step up and kill everything.

Any way, I’m getting off topic. We sailed on Poseidon, a snorkeling company boat. We had three snorkeling stops on the Great Barrier Reef. Snorkeling is actually easy as long as your mask fits snugly and doesn’t fill with water. The sea is so warm, the corals brilliant colours and there are hundreds of different fish to spot. Even mum who is a nervous swimmer just loved what she saw under the ocean. The second stop was the best as dad, Connor and I saw a Whitetip Reef Shark just cruising on the bottom. Mum fled the scene terrified.

Connor took lots of underwater photos until his hand cramped up and mum took over. I saw a Blackspotted Puffer Fish too.

The ship packed a lot of crew on for safety reasons including a marine biologist, who shared a lot of enjoyable information. Some facts to share are -

• 1% of the worlds ocean are “reefs” but they contain 25% of the worlds sealife • 0.02% of the worlds ocean is a marine reserve • There are soft and hard corals • The colour of corals is due to refraction of light rays

• Clown Anemonefish are all born male and will only change to be a dominant female. They clean the sea anemone by eating parasites, algae and zooplankton and the anemone offers protection from predators.

I spent hours in the water and was exhausted at the end of the afternoon. I went on a tour with the marine biologist at the last stop and she swam all over showing us all sorts of things including sea cucumbers, starfish and bump head parrot fish. We got a huge lunch on board the Poseidon and luckily mum wasn’t sick on the homebound trip.

It sure was a day to remember.

Somerfield residents will meet next week to develop an emer-gency response plan for the com-munity.

They plan to set up a venue, information and resources which can be used by the community in a disaster.

Somerfield Residents Associa-tion chairwoman Julie Tobbell said that when the earthquakes hit, many people did not know where to go.

“There were some people who went to the Civil Defence centre after the earthquake. But it wasn’t set up as a shelter, so there was nowhere for people to go if they needed to evacuate their homes.”

She said the plan was to create a meeting place for the community, where people could go if they were afraid to stay in their homes or “just need some reassurance and a cup of tea”.

St Marks Methodist Church has offered its hall as the community

disaster centre. But Mrs Tobbell said the group

would still like to prepare emer-gency and community contact information, collect food and equipment to store at the hall, and appoint a team who would be available to help during an emergency.

“At the end of the day none of us know where we are going to be in an emergency. But if we can have a venue and a consistent and reliable plan, then anyone in the community can take on a role if need be,” she said.

The group will meet at the hall on Tuesday next week from 10am.

If anyone would like to be involved but is not able to make the meeting, they can phone Mrs Tobbell on 332 4092.

The group plans to set up a regular mailing list, which will provide more information about the initiative and other commu-nity issues.

To join the mailing list, email [email protected].

Linwood GP John Boyd died almost six months ago, but in the communities where he lived and worked he has not been forgotten.

Many of the children he treated in Linwood, where he worked for more than 15 years, will benefit from a grant made by Pegasus Health in his memory.

The $5000 grant to Linwood Avenue School will be used to establish mentors, who will work with vulnerable children.

Principal Gerard Direen said the school started a mentor programme several years ago, but had struggled to get enough mentors to keep it going.

The grant will allow the school to pay the costs of the programme, and to contribute to groups which organise volun-teer mentors.

He said the programme made a big impact on the lives of the pupils.

“For some of our children, having the chance to get alongside an older person who is a good role model is a very important thing, because some don’t have parents or wider fam-ily around. So they simply don’t have that sort of person in their lives.”

Dr Boyd was well known in the community, Mr Direen said.

“He was a well-known GP in the area for a number of years,

and he gave a lot of time and skill and support to a lot of families in the area.”

Pegasus Health senior clinical leader Simon Wynn Thomas said the grant was an effort to acknowledge Dr Boyd’s hard work in the community.

“We knew he felt quite pas-sionate about the health issues of young people in the com-munity where he worked, so we thought it was a good way to acknowledge him.”

A memorial seat and plaque was also unveiled in Dr Boyd’s honour last week in Mt Pleas-ant, where he lived with his wife and children.

Dr Boyd died suddenly at the age of 58, while out in his garden.

His widow, Robynanne Mil-ford, said it had been a shock to the community.

She hoped the memorial would help.

“I hope it will give some solace for his colleagues and his patients who were really shocked when he died. Hopeful-ly it will give people who knew him some comfort.”

She said the seat looked out on a view Dr Boyd had loved.

“It looked out to sea, because he was a sailor; it looked out to the mountains where he was a mountaineer and where he owned a farm; and it looked out to the estuary where he used to spend so much time on the water.”

She said it had been difficult

for his family and friends since he died, but she was glad he would be remembered for the work he did.

The memorial plaque and seat is on Rangatira Tce in Mt Pleasant.

For more information or to get involved in the Linwood Avenue School mentoring pro-gramme, contact the school.

Doctor leaves his mark

REMEMBERED: Dr John Boyd has been remembered for his work as a Linwood GP, with a memorial seat and plaque in Mt Pleasant, and a grant to benefit the children he worked with in Linwood.

About 100 people attended a meeting at The Tannery last week, held to acknowledge the resilience and contribution of the business community to the post-earthquake recovery.

Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend spoke at the meeting about the rebuild progress the city is making, and the costs involved.

He said that $40 billion

was the estimated cost of the rebuild and that, in monetary terms, just 25 per cent has been completed.

Unemployment in Christchurch is at the lowest rate for years – under two per cent.

The Rotary-organised function was held to acknowledge the resilience and contribution of the local business community to the post-earthquake recovery, and to celebrate the strength,

determination and loyalty of small businesses.

The event was hosted by the Rotary clubs of eastern Christchurch - Christchurch South, Ferrymead, Linwood-Woolston, and Lyttelton.

Rotary district governor Liz Courtney spoke about the work Rotary clubs do in the area, especially for the elderly and children, and Shelly Harrison spoke as one of the youngest members of a Rotary club.

STARRY-EYED: The Kip McGrath Barrington ‘Star of the Month’ award for October has been given to Brodie Taylor. His tutors praised him for the tremen-dous amount of work he has put in with his reading and times tables. His hard work has been rewarded by amazing achievements in both these areas.

BY KYLE KNOWLES

A Beckenham school pupil has set his sights on an environmentally-friendly school and has won some top awards in the process.

Ben Wagstaff of Ladbrooks School won the junior section at the Canterbury-Westland Schools’ Science and Technology Fair recently.

This was the first science fair Ben had ever competed in after only doing an in-school one previously.

The top prize was $500 with $400 going to Ben and $100 to the school. Ben said he “really wanted to win” and the prize was a great incentive. The major award at the fair was presented to Ben by deputy chairman of Environment Canterbury David Caygill.

The award he won was for excellence in investigating ways to protect and enhance Canterbury’s natural and physical resources.

Ben’s project called the “Lad-brooks Commute” looked at how pupils of the school travelled to school every day and what effects that has on the environment.

He also picked up two other awards. One for the best map at the fair and a special prize for so-ciology from the Sociological As-sociation Aoteroa New Zealand.

He found out of 105 pupils at

the school six walked to school and only two cycled. Ben said he found this “weird” and investi-gated some ideas to cut carbon emissions the travel to school was making.

Ben contacted the Ministry of Education exploring the option of a bus route to the school but it has a guideline that there has to be a sufficient number of pupils living more than 3.2km away.

Another option that Ben ex-plored was extending a bike track by five or six kilometres but found that would have cost around half a million dollars.

Ben says to offset the amount of cardon dioxide emissions the school makes in a year they would have to plant 56,000 trees.

He said the best option at the moment would be to get more people car-pooling to school. “My mum and I come from Beck-enham and pass three or four houses (with Ladbrooks pupils) and it would be easy to pick some people up”.

Ben hoped a car-pooling system was in place by the end of the year and he would take his findings on to his new high school, Cashmere, next year.

Bright idea wins junior science fair

WINNER: Ladbrooks School pupil Ben Wagstaff next to his winning science fair entry.

But thanks to winning a promo-tion by The Edge and Fruttare, she was able to skip to the front of the queue.

She said that left her with no time for nerves.

“I just thought it’s now or never.”She sung Life of the Party by

Shawn Mendes, which she said was a favourite song.

Although she wasn’t selected by the judges, she said she received some encouraging comments.

“They said that I should practice more and work on my performance

but I had a good voice. I was really happy with that, I thought it was re-ally encouraging.”

The Middleton Grange School student said she had been taking singing lessons for the past few months, but had never sung on-stage before.

“I’ve sung in church, but it’s kind of different because you’re not alone and it’s in front of people you know.”

She said she planned to practice her singing, and would consider entering other competitions in the future.

Contestants who were selected will find out within two weeks if they have made it through to the competition.

The show is due to screen early next year on TV3.

READY TO PER-FORM: Saskia Hoekendijk, 16, was able to skip the line at The X Factor auditions in Christchurch, thanks to win-ning a promotion by The Edge and Fruttare.

After being called “a lemon” and unsellable, the former Westpac Business and Commu-nity Hub in Addington, has been sold.

It will be used to house close to 5000 young people at the Canterbury Youth Ser-vices annual Easter Camp at Spencer Park.

The hub was built in 2011, to help busi-nesses and community groups which had lost their facilities in the earthquakes.

It cost about $5 million, and groups were able to use it free of charge.

The hub was taken down earlier this year, but failed to sell at auction, with several po-tential buyers saying it was too big and too expensive to be practical.

But Canterbury Youth Services direc-

tor Mike Dodge said it was perfect for the group’s needs.

He said the group usually hired a large marquee, but it would not be available next year.

“This is exactly the same size as the one we used, but it’s far prettier. So we’re very happy with it.”

He said the structure would take several days to erect and take down each year, but that was something the group was already used to.

He did not want to say how much was paid for it.

But he said the group would look at rent-ing it out to other groups in the future.

“We believe it will pay for itself within a few years.”

Bad luck for a fellow competitor was good news for a Hoon Hay driver in the battle for the New Zealand One Hour Endurance title last week.

Hayden Knighton took second place in the championship, which was fought over three rounds.

He finished second in every round, with luck on his side at the last round in Timaru.

Twenty-nine cars took to the grid for the 60min race.

After the compulsory pit stop, Knigh-ton came out third behind Chris Hen-derson, and twice came close to passing and regaining second.

Having eventually settled behind Henderson and conceding that he wouldn’t get passed, the driveshaft of Henderson’s Corolla failed on the last lap.

That gave Knighton a higher finish and Henderson a non finish.

“We’re very happy to have finished and very lucky to take second today,” said Knighton.

“We just wanted to finish. Chris was quicker today but unlucky.”

Hugh Gardiner of Auckland won the championship, with the driver pairing of Sam Fillmore and Danny Stutterd third.

Good fortune for Hoon Hay racer

BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

I wasn’t able to write a Flame Files column last week.

I was several kilometres up a farm track on a hillside near Hurunui where an Ohoka farmer lost his life in a controlled burn-off.

I mention this because it was another ex-ample of a lack of knowledge on just how fast a fire can grow leaving the poor victim over-come.

As a city firefighter I’ve seen this regularly over the years in the far too many fatal fires I’ve attended.

Many, in houses, would not have proved fatal with the simple installation of smoke alarms.

Without them, as in Hurunui, by the time the victims realised they were in trouble, it was too late to escape.

Last weekend there was a spate of skips and rubbish bins deliberately lit in New Brighton.

If you have a commercial business in this area, or anywhere for that matter, for good-ness sake please ensure skips are kept well away from buildings and wheelie bins are se-cured or locked away.

There are arsonists free and living in our city. Don’t make it easy for them!

A call to Ariel Place in Aranui last Sunday was a bit like a blast from the past when a waterbed started to leak and the house occu-pants could not contain it.

We had quite a few of these ‘back in the day’ but I haven’t see one for several years.

The house was left with hose in the bladder siphoning to the outside. All fixed!

▌▌FLAME FILES

Don’t leave it too late to escape

CAUTION: Be extra careful when carrying out a burn-off.

T he management team at Onyx Homes are arguablyunrivaled in the home building sector. With years of

experience and having previously built one of NZ’s largestnationwide building companies, at which time had won moreMaster Build Awards than any other company in the country, home building has become second nature.

Richard Freeman director of Onyx Homes says “people needto be very careful and it’s a real concern with a lot of these new“so called” building companies entering the marketwith management at the helm with no clue on how abuilding company actually runs. We are seeing plumbersand electricians starting up building companies here in

Christchurch to get a foot in the door. People should alwaysgo with a Registered Master Builder to ensure they are ingood hands and their asset is well protected”.

With the client and their best intentions at the forefront oftheir company philosophy and a driven passion to get itright every-time has been the success of Onyx Homes.

From concept design through to handing you the keys of yournew home we guarantee you only the best experience.

Our sole goal is to deliver a superior product on time withthe best price that sets the benchmark for the buildingindustry, and continue to raise the bar.

Her wide experience includes new builds and renovation, and she has worked alongside both building companies and

private customers. She’s pleased to be part of the regeneration of the city so that she can apply her skills and expertise to bring some beauty back to our homes.

Mel has noticed a definite pattern in what her clients want. “In the past, people may have updated one room at a time and been comfortable to do that themselves. Now they have the opportunity to redecorate an entire house and it’s overwhelming. People really want to make sure they get it right.”

So often she has been called in to help work out a new interior and exterior colour scheme for clients who have been given the chance to update their homes as a result of work needing to be done after the Canterbury earthquakes.

Homeowners have also decided they want to make significant changes, and that too is where she comes in.

Mel is able to advise them on current trends in interior and exterior design. “People are now freshening up their look with lighter shades and whites are tending to be warmer. Blue will be big, especially navy, with yellow, red and orange as accent colours. Pastels and soft fresh hues are popular too. Wallpaper is still being

used and we are seeing it on all four walls instead of just a single feature wall. There are some great wallpapers now that mimic timber, brick and slate. As well as colour, adding textures and patterns creates a more interesting look. Nothing is too ‘matchy’,” she explains.

And just where does the inspiration come from? “Fashion,” says Mel. “The colours that you see on the catwalk flow into interior design.”

With such a huge variety of soft furnishings, fabrics, finishes and furniture to choose from, Mel can make the process easier and the results will be stunning. “It’s fantastic to see people move back into homes that are better than before,” she adds.

FOODChicken cacciatoreCacciatore means ‘hunter’ in Ital-ian and in cuisine, the word refers to a meal prepared ‘hunter-style’ with tomatoes, onions, mush-rooms and herbs.

Ingredients8 Chicken pieces, skin on and bone in2 Tbsp Olive oil1 Onion, large, finely chopped1 Celery stalk, finely sliced1 Carrot, peeled and chopped4 Garlic cloves, crushed250g Button mushrooms, halved800g Canned tomatoes½ cup Kalamata olives½ cup White wine1 Bay leaf

1 Tbsp Rosemary, chopped¼ cup Parsley, chopped

DirectionsRub chicken pieces (with skin and bone attached) with salt and pep-per. Heat oil in a large frying pan, brown chicken in batches and then set aside. Reduce heat, then add the onion, celery, chopped carrot, crushed garlic and halved mushrooms to the frying pan. Cook until tender. Increase heat and add the toma-toes, olives, wine and herbs, then put chicken back in the pan. Cover and cook for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Check flavours and add salt and pepper as needed.

Strawberry shortcakeServes 6 A delicate shortcake sandwiched with a little jam, whipped cream and plenty of strawberries is delish. Make sure you use butter both for flavour and to guarantee the right “short” texture.

Ingredients2 cups Self raising flour2 Tbsp Caster sugar½ tsp Salt4 Tbsp Butter, softened¼ cup Cream, plus 1 cup extra, whipped for serving1 jar Strawberry jam, good quality2 punnets Strawberries2 Tbsp Icing sugar, sifted, to decorate

DirectionsPreheat oven to 180 deg C. Sift the flour, sugar and salt together.

Cut the butter into small cubes then add to the flour mixture. With your fingertips rub butter into the mixture until it resembles breadcrumbs. Pour in the first amount of cream and mix gently with your hands until a soft dough forms. Rest for 5 minutes. On a floured surface, roll the dough to a thickness of 1cm. Cut

into 6cm rounds and transfer to a lined baking sheet. Gather the offcuts and repeat. Bake for 10 minutes or until golden. Cool slightly then split. Spread the bottom with a little strawberry jam. Stack with sliced strawberries then whipped cream and top with the shortcake. Dust liberally with icing sugar and serve immediately.

Simple strawberry mille-feuilleServes 6

Ingredients3 sheets Butter puff pastry, 30cm x 12cm300ml Whipped cream1 punnet Strawberries½ cup Strawberry jam85 g Redcurrant jelly

DirectionsIf using a block of puff pastry, roll it out to size, place on baking

sheets and allow to rest for 30 minutes. (If the pastry is pre-rolled, omit this step.) Prick the surface all over with a fork. Preheat the oven to 200C. Bake the pastry until golden and crisp – around 15 minutes. Set aside. Whip the cream until lightly stiff. Hull the strawberries then slice the fruit in half. Gently heat the redcurrant jelly in a small saucepan until the jelly melts. To assemble the mille-feuille, take a sharp knife and trim the edges off the pastry sheets to make them sharp. Place the first

sheet on a serving platter. Spread with several tablespoonfuls of jam, then top with half the cream. Spread the second sheet with more jam, then place gently on top of the first sheet. Spread with the remaining cream and top with the last pastry sheet. Decorate the top with halved strawberries, then use a pastry brush to paint redcurrant glaze over the straw-berries. It doesn’t matter if a little drizzles down. To serve, cut into slices with a sharp knife.

More than half of us believe we’re above average when it comes to health but the country as a whole doesn’t fare too well,

according to new research by Sovereign.“Our latest research revealed 57 per cent of

Kiwis think that New Zealand, as a nation, is not very healthy, but 53 per cent believe they live a healthier lifestyle than the average New Zealander so it doesn’t apply to them,” says Sovereign chief medical o cer Dr John Mayhew.

“Interestingly, men rate themselves slightly higher than their female counterparts and 72 per cent of those in Marlborough and West Coast believe their health is above the averageNew Zealander.”

Sovereign’s research also delved into what we believe good health to be, including our understanding of what contributes to a healthy life.

“ ere are documented medical links between happiness and good health. Happier people live longer and experience less heart disease, colds, high blood pressure and other serious illnesses. At Sovereign, more than 30 per cent of our disability income claims are due to mental illness. People need to be more aware of the importance of their happiness and its contribution to our overall health,” says Dr Mayhew.

In another concerning statistic, a signi cant 66 per cent of people admitted to su ering from insomnia or broken sleep

healthy and balanced lifestyle. Stay tuned,” says Brewis-Weston.

“Supporting New Zealanders to live healthier lifestyles will not only make a di erence to each person individually, the lives of their families and communities, but to the country overall. Healthier people need less medical intervention. Healthier communities place fewer burdens on the public health system. Healthy people are happier people and have better wellbeing.”

over the last 12 months.“Not getting enough shut-eye on a regular

basis can have devastating e ects on your health, including weight gain, insulin resistance and an increased risk of accidents,” says Dr Mayhew.

Encouraged by the nding that 60 per cent of Kiwis believe they are focusing more on their health now than they did a year ago, Sovereign has launched a new campaign inspiring New Zealanders to take charge of their health and understand the four essentials of a healthy lifestyle: exercise, eating well, sleep and happiness.

Sovereign CEO Symon Brewis-Weston explains the ‘Life. Take charge’ campaign is not aimed at telling Kiwis how to be healthier, it is about giving them tools to do it.

“We have decided it’s time to break the insurance industry mould and begin a movement that encourages Kiwis to take control of their health proactively before they need our help xing them. Over the coming months, we’ll literally be giving New Zealanders tools that will help them have a

Grahame Sydney is one of New Zealand’s major artists, famous for his quintessential and exquisitely rendered paintings of Central Otago and the South.

This book contains over 200 paintings from Sydney’s 40-year career, including all of his best-known landscapes, his figure paintings, and his highly distinctive paintings of buildings and their interiors. The book opens with a perceptive and finely turned account by the artist of his childhood in Dunedin and the beginnings of his obsession with art, and an essay from New Zealand’s Poet Laureate and man of letters, Vincent O’Sullivan, who writes insightfully and lyrically about Sydney’s work.

A landmark publication, this book captures magnificently the scale and significance of Grahame Sydney’s contribution to New Zealand art and culture.

New Zealand is a place of rare and challenging beauty and tramping here has developed a unique character and style, even its own language. In this fascinating, highly readable and superbly illustrated book, experienced trampers and backcountry authors Shaun Barnett and Chris Maclean tell, for the first time, how this essentially Kiwi recreation evolved in such a distinctive way.

Tramping – A New Zealand history tells the story of the development of this popular pastime from colonial days to the present. It describes how state-sponsored tracks and huts were developed for tourism in the late nineteenth century, followed by the formation of the first tramping clubs in the early twentieth century and the subsequent boom in tramping during the 1930s. Trampers’ battles to have national parks and wilderness areas established, changes to gear and technology, and the role women have played in tramping are included. The book will appeal to all trampers, and anyone with an interest in the outdoors and history.

MONEY

Buying a house is a lengthy, stressful process.

Just when you think it is all over, and before funds are released to your solici-tor, your lender will ask how you want to structure your mortgage.

You will probably have had little time to consider this and yet the structure of your mortgage can have significant implications.

Mortgages vary in terms of how repayments are made and how the interest rate is set.

There are three basic types:•Table mortgage – This is the most common type of mortgage, on which you repay both the principal and interest over a fixed period.

You can have a floating interest rate or fix your interest rate for a period of time, giving you certainty of

what your repayments are.Fixing can lead to penal-

ties if you repay your mort-gage earlier by increasing your repayments or paying lump sums.•Interest only mortgage– With this type of mort-gage, you pay back only the interest for a fixed period of time. This is useful if your mortgage repayments are very high, if you have a loss

of income, or if buying an investment property.•Line of credit, or revolv-ing credit – This type of loan works a bit like an overdraft. You are required to pay the interest owing on the balance of the loan each month. The interest rate is floating. You can reduce the amount of interest you pay by keeping your savings in your line of credit. You can divide your mortgage into two or three different amounts with a mixture of types of mortgage and with table mortgages fixed for different periods.

Your bank or mortgage broker can help advise you on the best structure, but don’t leave it until the last minute!

Consider mortgagestructure carefully

Wanganui Chronicle Thursday, June 13, 2013 31

It’s simply amatter ofstretching your targets

RussellBellBUSINESS ZEN

IT’STHEMIDDLE of Juneand 50 per cent of the yearis already almost behindus. Time flies when you are

having fun and, for many of us,that’s what this time of year isabout—with the ski seasonalmost here and others lookingfor winter escapes. It’s also a good time to look

ahead and plan for futuresuccess. Strategic planning isan essential component ofsuccessful business and I havetwo plans— one formyself andone for the business— both areintertwined.Formany of us, our

businesses are a reflection ofourselves, so it makes sensethat whenwe plan for ourbusiness(es), they reflect ourown goals and ambitions. So, what are you going to

achieve for the remainder ofthis year? What are yourtargets? Are you going to letlife happen or take astructured approach? It’s important that you set

goals for yourself and yourbusiness that energise, motivate, aremeasurable andattainable. However, you

shouldmake sure that you alsoset some stretch targets. My personal plan includes

revampingmy fitness and hasmany stretches . . . and stretchtargets! I have resolved toexercise at least three times aweek. I did start this columnwith the ‘‘time flies’’ statement, but it seems that in that fitnesstime, I can create an ability toslow time significantly or stopit entirely. So I am going to dust off the

previously unused stepmachine at home. And I will seta goal of ‘‘stepping’’ aparticular distance each day.Given that the garage isn’twarm, there is incentive to getmotivated. The stretch target is to

make this activity daily. OK,not much of a stretch, but rightnow I am about as fit as a BigMac is nutritious.

The key to stretch targets isthat they do just that; theystretch you to new levels ofperformance and, likemuscleswhen you exercise, you andyour business develop newstrengths as you achieve them.I know it won’t be easy—

particularly starting fromscratch— but I want to beexercising every day if I can. Sowhat do you dowhen thingsget toughwhen pursuing agoal? Instead of giving up, youget energised. And although itis a stretch, I believe it isattainable.Oncemy fitness returns, it

will be a goal achieved, and Iwill have developedmoreconfidence andwill feel bettertoo. It’s the same for goal setting

and strategic planning— setyour targets so you knowwhere you are going andinclude some stretch targets. The benefits to you and yourbusiness will be exponential.■ If you would like helpimplementing stretch targetsinto your strategic plan, giveZenith Solutions a call on 3479997.

Get goodadvice beforeinvesting overseas

It is not uncommon for NewZealanders to have overseasinvestments.Examplesmight be shares in

foreign companies, foreign unittrust investments, foreignsuperannuation schemes andforeign life insurance policies. There are some pitfalls in leaving

these investments overseas. If your overseas investments

have a value greater than $50,000,they could well be liable for tax inNew Zealand. This is called aForeign Investment Fund (FIF) tax. There are a number of options youcan choose from as to to calculate itand youwill need help from anaccountant or financial adviser.Certain overseas investments,

particularly Australian ones, areexempt from FIF tax.Under current NZ law, an

overseas adviser who providesinvestment advice to a NZ residentmust be an Authorised FinancialAdviser (AFA) as determined in theFinancial Advisers Act.Australian advisersmay in some

circumstances be exempt from this

requirement. Exemptions also applyto wholesale investors, for examplethose whose investment assets are$1million ormore. If, for example, you have a share

portfolio of around £200,000 in theUK onwhich personalisedinvestment advice is provided by abroker, the broker will be in breachof the Financial Advisers Act if he orshe is not registered as an AFA inNZ. Youwill not have the protectionof the code of conduct, disclosurerequire-ments anddisputeresolutionschemesthat aremandatoryfor AFAs.Finally,

having assets in currenciesother than the New Zealand dollarwill expose you to exchange raterisk.Obtaining advice from aNew

Zealand accountant or financialadviser on the implications ofleaving investment assets overseasis highly recommended.

Being a recent school leaver, I decided I wanted to take my dream career further and looked into study options for Early Childhood. I had attended

a food safety course that my workplace had put me through which was held at the Aoraki Polytechnic, and I loved the environment!  I found a course that took my interest that had a mid-year start. I enrolled and completed the Certificate in Parenting and Care of Children, and then went on to further my studies by enrolling in the Certificate in Early Childhood Studies.

My studies are so relevant to the Early Childhood industry, covering everything from having the ability to communicate effectively with children, having knowledge and skills in an Early Childhood sector, u n d e r s t a n d i n g

Careless translation BITES CHICKEN EXPORTER

By Jack May

Three points to ponder Clever writers can earn substantial fees.Translating English into other languages

has traps for the unwary.Proofreaders who understand two

languages are valuable people in exporting, document t ranslating and book publishing.

“We show all our writing students how to get their articles, stories, poems or instruction books published,” says Brian Morris, Principal at New Zealand Institute of Business Studies. “They also get thoroughly proofread before being released.”

If interested in writing or proofreading work at home, phone 0800 801 994  and ask for the free report #805, “When You Have A Passion For Story Telling”. Whether your topic is food, electronics, cars, cooking, gardening, sport or business, there is satisfaction in getting your book written and published.

The Homestead is registered as a Category 2 historic place. From the registration details, Risingholme has architectural significance as a rare

example of the domestic work of architect Maxwell Bury. The only other registered dwellings known to have been designed (at least in part) by Bury are Chippenham Lodge in Christchurch (Category 2) and the Professorial Houses at Otago University.

Risingholme was built in 1864 by William and Mary Reeves, parents of politician

Celebrating 70 years AS A COMMUNITY CENTRE

This year marks the 70th year that Risingholme Community Centre has been operating as a community centre, and the 150th anniversary of the

Risingholme Homestead in Opawa.William Pember Reeves. After the death of William Reeves in 1891, the house had several further private owners until 1943, when it was purchased and presented to the City of Christchurch by J R McKenzie for the “health, amusement and instruction of the public”.

After a public meeting in St Mark’s schoolroom, Opawa, on February 24, 1944, the Risingholme Community Centre Incorporated Society was formed. Dr H E Hansen, the chairman of the committee who set up at this historic meeting, had been a leader in adult education for many years and under his guidance, the committee established its first activities: a nursery play centre, a room for the Plunket Society, drama, play reading and study/discussion groups.

Within six months, the first director W Ross Edwards, was appointed and by July 1945, an energetic programme was in place, including a Young People’s Club, woodwork classes and bridge and garden groups.

The temporary facility to serve the local community in Opawa.

The Homestead

The people who write advertising slogans are clever with words. They can make a simple frozen chicken hugely appealing.

A clever wordsmith named Ed McCabe was paid a substantial fee to write these 10 words, “It takes a strong man to make a tender chicken”.

This slogan for Perdue Chickens helped sell 15 million frozen chickens through American supermarkets in one year. Yes, the chickens were top quality meat.

But the Perdue export department got it wrong. They translated the slogan into Spanish as, “It takes an aroused man to make a chicken affectionate”.

Hispanic and Mexican cooks were not amused.

By 1946, the committee had decided to build a hall so that the centre could accommodate more activities and so began a succession of fairs, fetes and other fundraising activities that finally led to the construction of the hall/theatre and later the craft rooms at the back of the park.

Year 1947 saw both the completion of the hall and the arrival of Dorothy Crumpton as the new director, and these two factors led to an increased level of activity at Risingholme. Drama was a focus, two choirs were started, films were shown and classes which had begun under the auspices of both the Christchurch Technical College and the WEA expanded.

By 1954 the craft rooms were completed to accommodate the growing number of craft classes, such as woodwork and pottery - it was also, sadly, the year that Dorothy died after a period of declining health.

It was then that Jeanne Edgar became director and this began a long and stable period for the centre as Jeanne maintained and gradually built on the activities already in place until her retirement in 1983.

Jeanne Edgar was succeeded by Raewyn Cooke, who brought many positive changes to the way Risingholme operates. Through the energy and vision of Raewyn, the centre became independent in 2004. In April 2007, Raewyn Cooke was succeeded by Maryke Fordyce as director.

The community education programme

has continued to flourish, now working collaboratively with a number of schools and community groups. Risingholme is also host to a variety of independent community groups and activities.

As a result of the recent earthquakes in Canterbury, the Homestead and hall were damaged and is currently in the City Council’s Facilities Repair programme, with no known date for repairs to start. The centre is seen as a priority and funding was committed to repair the buildings by the Council, according to the Mayor’s news release on September 4.

The centre was also successful in acquiring a grant from the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust to erect a temporary facility to serve the local community in Opawa. This lovely facility is now completed and already hosting a range of classes and will be officially opened on October 23.

excellent FOODINNOVATIVE CUISINEexcellent service

Stunning food coupled with a chance to shop makes a visit to Urban Corner Cafe simply irresistible.

The cafe now has an assortment of trendy trinkets and modern decor home wares on display that are well worth a browse. From chunky fashion jewellery through to contemporary iron wall art, there’s bound to be that perfect something for someone special.

“Our gift selection is similar to what you’ll find in specialist gift shops in the malls, but at a fraction of the price,” said Katrina Hargen, co-owner.

Since opening in March, North New Brighton’s The Bower / Urban Corner Cafe Restaurant complex has received rave reviews for it’s innovative modern cuisine and industrial chic design.

The interior is stunning, and really must be seen to be appreciated.

The left side of the structure houses The Bower... a lovely modern styled bar decked out with booth and leaner seating, a gaming room, and fabulous sun drenched sheltered outdoor area. The bar offers a wide range of regular entertainment including live music and live sports coverage.

To the right side of the structure is The Urban Corner Cafe Restaurant.

Urban Corner has a wide attraction. Opening from 9am it offers a great array of gourmet cabinet food available to eat in or takeaway and great espresso, as well as a la carte lunch and dinner menus. It’s decor is tastefully bright and breezy, and the dining area opens out to an al fresco dining deck that steps down to two safe and secure kiddies play area.

At the helm of the kitchen is Chef Paulo. Formerly of Michaels Restaurant, his cuisine reflects fine dining. Making the most of new season produce, Chef Paulo has just launched a fresh new menu that is modestly priced considering the high quality ingredients used and outstanding presentation of dishes.

Also launched is a separate $20 menu that is available daily in The Bower bar.

Constructed from shipping containers, a common response from new patrons is that the exterior does not do justice to the wealth of treasure within.
