Thanksgiving Day is a harvest festival celebrated primarily in the United States and

Canada. Thanksgiving is a holiday to express thankfulness, gratitude, and appreciation to

God, family and friends for which all have been blessed of material possessions and

relationships. Traditionally, it has been a time to give thanks for a bountiful harvest. This

holiday has since moved away from its religious roots.[1]

In the United States, Thanksgiving Day falls on the fourth Thursday of November. In

Canada it is celebrated on the second Monday in October.

The precise historical origin of the holiday is disputed. Although Americans commonly

believe that the first Thanksgiving happened in 1621, at Plymouth Plantation, in

Massachusetts, there is strong evidence for earlier celebrations in Canada (1578) and by

Spanish explorers in Florida (1565).

Let us all give Thanks for all we have in our lives.

SHEL GAFFORD MEMORIAL AWARD

For

EXCELLENCE IN SPORTSMANSHIP

Once again it’s time to honor those within our membership who exhibit the

characteristics of good sportsmanship that were so much a part of Shel’s personality.

Please take a few minutes to read the following nominations and vote on which one

you feel is most deserving of this award. Each Chapter will determine how their votes

will be collected. If you are not sure, contact your Chapter President so that you can

be sure that your vote will count.

SHARON ACKLEY:

It is our honor and privilege to nominate Sharon Ackley for the Shel Gafford Award. An unflagging

supporter of dressage, she has worked tirelessly for years, supporting not only VADAF but VADA as well.

Sharon has served the Fredericksburg chapter as Treasurer for over a decade and is well known as a (VADA)

state representative and overall state volunteer.

In the early years, Sharon and her large contingent of ponies and children, single handedly, filled our

schooling shows. As evidence of her guidance these same children (now adults) are themselves serving in

key volunteer positions at the state and local level.

Quick to pick up the phone, Sharon can recruit new members, solicit donations, plan educational

opportunities, schedule riding clinics, and run a licensed show (often in key management positions) all while

balancing the VADAF checkbook. Being an experienced dressage rider, she knows when it’s time for new

ideas and when revisiting the old perhaps is best.

Members of Region One will recognize her as an essential GAIG volunteer and participants in the BLM’s

know her well. Amazingly, after years of being a rider, coach, Board member, cheerleader, and overall

“general maintenance staff”, Sharon is still happy to take on new responsibilities and is still volunteering. We

truly believe that she epitomizes the spirit of the Shel Gafford Award. Nominated by: Nicky Vogel and

Barbara Snapp

GARDY BLOEMERS:

I would like to nominate a member of VADA and President of the Charlottesville Chapter – Gardy

Bloemers for the Shel Gafford Award. Gardy, on a daily basis, epitomizes integrity, sense of fairness,

and encouragement to all for our sport. She characterizes and is the perfect example of good

sportsmanship. Her energies, over the years, have been driven to provide and promote dressage

within our community and the community at large. She is compassionate, understanding and

supportive to all she meets in our community. Her general kindness and gentle sweet nature have

helped many of us cope with poorer scores and performances than we would wish for. Gardy is there

to cheer you on and encourage you to keep on reaching.

In short – Gardy is a role model for good sportsmanship. It has been my pleasure to know and

work with her over the last few years. Nominated by: Nancy Lowey

NICKY VOGEL:

I would like to nominate Nicky Vogel for the VADA Shel Gafford Memorial Award for the year

2010. Along with a rigorous teaching schedule, Nicky has served as President of the Fredericksburg

Chapter of VADA for the past three years. Her dedication and leadership has kept the club active and

moving forward. She has a nice way of gathering volunteers for the many tasks that an active chapter

requires.

During her second term, she began the arduous process of acquiring 501-C3 status for the

Chapter. Many volunteer hours went into the planning, phoning and letter writing required to

accomplish the task.

The success of three schooling shows and one licensed two day show this year speaks well of the

drive required to oversee the show committees’ work and be attentive to detail. Nicky has given a

great deal of her time and talents to VADAF.

Nominated by: Barbara Ellis

Please take time to vote!

Youth Member Spotlight – Ellen Bouchard

Showing info: I’m currently showing at first level on my horse Magi. We’re

working on second level, and hoping to show second level

next year

What is the hardest thing you have had to learn and why? Riding has taught me most about persistence. I was always

very impatient with things, and not willing to keep going if things

got difficult. From riding I learned that if you want to enjoy it and

be successful, you have to keep working at it.

What other interests and hobbies do you enjoy? My favorite hobby is art- mostly painting and drawing. Of course,

my main focus in art is horses.

How have your parents supported your horse addiction? Neither of my parents were ever horse people, so I am very fortunate that they have been so

supportive of my riding. They know how important riding is to me, and as long as I am enjoying

it and working hard they are willing to put horses first. I am especially thankful for everything

my mom has ever done for me, from leading me around on a little pony she knew nothing

about to bringing me to shows and always being there to watch me and help me however she

can.

What’s the thing you most appreciate about your main instructor (and who are they)? My main instructor is Tristin Hardy Butler. What I appreciate most about her is that she gives

you so many opportunities and helps you to live up to your full potential; you never feel limited

as a rider. At the same time, you never feel any sort of pressure to do anything you may not be

ready for or feel uncomfortable with.

What instructors and/or clinicians have you worked with? What is a really neat thing you have learned that you would like to share?

My favorite clinic was a sport psychology clinic with Daniel Stewart. Although it was only a

lecture, I learned a lot about how to control show nerves and be more relaxed and confident.

He gives you many different techniques for staying calm and focused, and you find out on your

own which ones work best for you

What are your goals for this coming year? This year I hope to begin showing at second level and continue to work on schooling through

third- my long term goal is to show through third level and get my bronze medal before I go to

college.

Page 17: Southeast Virginia Dressage Association · 2014. 11. 7. · Southeast Virginia Dressage Association November Volume 25 , Issue 11 2010 Board of Directors President Kathy Rowse 757.617.9505

What are your future goals with horses? I know that I want to continue riding and competing in dressage for as long as I can. Other than

that, the future is a mystery- I have no idea where horses will take me someday.

Do you like dogs or cats better? Why? Or why both? I like all animals equally. I’ve had both dogs and cats, and other types of pets, from goldfish to

reptiles to (of course) horses. Each type of animal comes with its own unique advantages and

disadvantages, and each pet you have is a completely different experience.

How often do you get to ride? Would you like more or is that enough for your current lifestyle? Why?

I usually ride four times per week. It’s enough for me, but I sometimes wish that I wasn’t so

busy so that I could ride all the time.

Do you have a job? Doing what and how often? I don’t have a paying job, but I do work as a volunteer at Equi-Kids therapeutic riding center.

Once a week I help care for the lesson horses by grooming and tacking them, and then I lead

them during lessons. Volunteering is both a fun and a rewarding experience.

Where do you go to school? Favorite subjects or MAJOR? Why? I go to Norfolk Collegiate School. My favorite subject is Biology, which I hope to major in once I

go to college. I love biological sciences mostly because of my love of animals. I’m fascinated

by nature, and always want to learn more about how it works. Ellen has done very well with her

Connemara/Hanoverian Mare “Magi” this year. Highlights are a 72.5% on her First Level Musical

Freestyle at Dressage at Lexington, a 72% at first four at Raleigh, and being on the SVDA

Youth Mixed Division Champion Team. She has previously been actively involved in Pony

Club but has concentrated on furthering her dressage this year. They are qualified for both the

USDF Region 1 and the BLM Championships at first level and first level musical freestyle as

well as the SVDA championships in November. Ellen and her mom Rita are active volunteers

for the club and we appreciate their dedication and membership.

The World Equestrian Games- By Anna Schriebl

America hosted the 2010 World Equestrian Games

and is the first nation to do so outside of Europe.

The venue was fantastic and the riders were

phenomenal! Watching the warm up was especially

educational. We watched the world's best of the

best work on basics and continually use shoulder-in

in trot and canter to help straighten and supple their

horses. Most warm ups we watched included lots of

shoulder in and transitions within the gates.

There was much discussion regarding the

judging even before the games ended. We stood

next to one of the team's coach during a ride and

they were surprised at the low scores being given

for certain movements. 6s and 7s were the norm

for movements most of us could only hope to ride

that well!

One of the highlights of the trip for me was meeting

Klaus Balkenhol at the airport. What a nice, friendly

man!
