Half-Halt The Newsletter of the Southeast Virginia Dressage Association
“The Little Engine that Could”
This month one of the toughest little horses I've ever known lost a valiant battle with founder. Marylyn
Leonards AQHA gelding, Salty Bobbys Bar never got the word that he wasn't a warmblood! The little 15
hand guy always dug deep and got the job done. Or maybe it was his deep love and trust in his rider, Marylyn.
Either way Bobby earned his nickname "The little engine who could". He and Marylyn won multiple SVDA year end
Championship titles at both training and first level and many ribbons at our Wakefield shows. In 1995, Marylyn and Bobby were the VADA state champions at First Level.
They competed at 2nd level and even learned flying chang-es together. Bobby really knew how to put the word FLY
into his changes! In his later years Bobby passed on some of his extensive knowledge by teaching Marlyns
granddaughter to ride. So we bid a sad but fond farewell to Bobby and send out
heartfelt condolences to Marylyn.
Kathy Rowse
SVDA Also extends heartfelt
condolences to Tristin
Butler on the loss of her
beloved Elfenkoenig.
“Elfie” was a stunning and
talented FEI horse who will
be greatly missed.

approved.
Committee Reports
1. Schooling Shows: Robyn Nunnally reported that we need more volunteers for the October schooling show. Sandy al-
so reminded the board that the closing date was this coming Monday and entries were low so far. Due to rain and
the coggins folder getting wet, Robin Jones is working to gather all the coggins for horses showing. Therefore, at
this show everyone would need to bring a copy of their horses coggins test. Beth asked Wendy to post reminders
on the website of the upcoming closing date of the show, and a reminder for everyone to bring their coggins test
to the show.
7. Scholarship/Foundation Fund: A dollar amount for the foundation fund has not been decided by the board as of yet,
therefore, Shari suggested that 600-1,000 could be used at this time. Sandy motioned that $1,000 be placed in the
Foundation Fund for 2012 and that whatever is not used this year will be rolled over to the next year. Mary se-
conded, and all approved. (A cap of $200 per applicant was previous voted on)
Sandy reported that 1 application was received by Kathy Rowse in request to aide attendance to the Regional convention.
Sandy approved the application and motion to approve. Beth seconded and all approved.
Adjournment
Kathy adjourned the meeting at 1:23 in order for all to enjoy the talk by Debbie Rodriguez on Demystifying the Riders
marks and Dressage Equitation. Next meeting will be a face to face meeting on Monday, December 3rd, 2012 at
the Chesapeake Great China Buffet @ 7pm.

Our question this month is answered by Gigi Nutter, FEI Trainer, Rider (USDF Bronze, Silver and Gold Medalist) and national clinician, and owner of Touch 'n Go Farm, LLC, in Whitesburg GA. Thanks so much for your time, Gigi!
How do you keep your horses fit and ready for the next show season during the winter months, especially if you don't have an
indoor ring?
Gigi answers:
Since she has moved to Georgia, keeping the horses trained during the winter is easier than it was in Pennsylvania. A rider's big-gest friend is the Weather Channel! Keep an eye on the weather and plan your training around that. You may need to vary your
schedule in order to keep the horses fit as the winter weather gets more unpredictable. Plan your rides accordingly and use your time wisely.
Your horses need four days a week to keep their fitness and muscle tone. Gigi likes to work her horses 3-4 days in a row with one day off after that and a hack sometimes before or after a ride. She is often away on weekends teaching at clinics around the US so
she ensures that they have some kind of handling or lungeing by a trusted person at her farm.
The horses' work doesn't really change as the seasons do and Gigi stays with her normal training program. But she varies the work to keep the horses' happy. You can get a good workout and your training accomplished in as little as a 1/2 hour. Get what
you are asking for and then give them a break. If longer rides are needed to get your point across, then ride longer but know your horse and what he is capable of and what he is used to doing. Gigi also uses cavaletti work and an in-and-out jump to loosen the
back. Suppling is the key to success as is ending on a good note.
Not having an indoor can make keeping your horse in work a challenge! However, a lot can be done on a 20 meter circle. Work in the section of the ring that is good. Use a 20 meter circle for shoulder-in and out and haunches in (both sides) and do some lat-
eral work on the circle. This will help your horse's suppleness. If their isn't a safe place to work at a gait higher than the walk, then walk. Use the walk to reinforce the aids, lateral work, and lateral aids.
Depending on hair coat, Gigi's horses may get some kind of clip to get them getting sweaty as the muscle warms. It may be a trace clip where the horse is sweating most. After working, your horse should show some sweat pattern and work enough to
drink enough which can help prevent colic.
Your horse's water consumption is very important during the winter. Gigi adds hot water to cold for a luke warm bucket when it starts getting about 25 degrees. Getting them fluid is important. Soak their regular grain and hay. Making them sweat during work
will also make them drink.
It is natural for horses to be out in nature and it helps them deal with the show environment and the changes that brings. Gigi turns her horses out for a few hours each day as long as the ground is not hard or slippery. If there is a threat of a thunderstorm, they stay in. Know your horse as far as turnout is concerned. Gigi usually lunges her horses before turning them out if they have
