THURSDAY NIGHT LADIES POINT SCORE AT 24 OCTOBER 2013

There is an old hotel/pub in Marble Arch, London which used to have

gallows adjacent. Prisoners were taken to the gallows (after a fair trial of course) to be hanged.

The horse drawn dray carting the prisoner was accompanied by an

armed guard, who would stop the dray outside the pub and ask the prisoner if he would like “one last drink”. If he said yes it was referred to as “one for the road”. If he declined that prisoner was “on the wag-on”.

So there you have it, fascinating history!

HISTORIC KNOWLEDGE.

The best players are always the ones who remember

their losses; because they remember the pain and they

hate it.

TENNIS QUOTE BY BILLIE JEAN KING

An invitation is extended to players to come along on Saturdays to

be part of an afternoon of social tennis.

Divisions 1 and 2 from our Junior competition,

along with visitors to the area, are also welcome

to join in.

Commencing time is 1pm but please arrive by

12.45pm and stay as long as you wish.

A plate of nibbles to share would also be very

much appreciated.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON SOCIAL TENNIS

It is with sadness we advise the recent passing of Lyle McLeod,

husband of club member Betty McLeod.

Lyle had been in ill health for some time and he will be remem-

bered for his strength in combating his problems.

Our deepest sympathy is extended to Betty and

her family.

We also advise the passing of past member Patty

Williams. Patty was also a dear friend of Betty for

many years.

DEEPEST SYMPATHY

There seems to be some confusion regarding players hitting

a ball before it has passed over the net.

Rule 24 of the ITF Rules of Tennis states:

PLAYER LOSES POINT The point is lost if:

The player hits the ball before it has passed the net.

However, should the ball pass over the net and bounce

back into the opponents side, then the ball can be played

provided no part of the body, clothing or racket touches

the net. Feet also should not pass under the net at any time.

Rule 26 relates to a hindrance in playing a point.

If a player is hindered in playing the point by a delib-

erate act of the opponent, the player shall win the

point.

This rule should be adhered to in relation to tossing the

second ball away after a serve. The opponent can request

that the server cease doing this as it is creating a hindrance

to his sight. Once the server has been requested to cease

and continues to do so, this becomes a deliberate hindrance

and the server loses the point.

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

Competition ended 14 Sept. 2013

There are a number of items of clothing currently in the Lost

Property cupboard (mainly children’s jackets) and a couple of

throw rugs. These items will be on display on Saturday mornings,

so have a look to see if anything belongs to your child. They have

all been washed and will be taken to St Vincent De Paul Society on

Thursday 14 November.

It would be a good idea if parents could put their children’s name

on their clothing so that we know who to contact if something is

left at the courts.

On Monday and Tuesday 23rd and 24th September, the Webb & Wilton Shield was held at Nowra centre. This competition, for centres within

our region, has been operating since 1955 and teams can consist of various ages under 18. Ulladulla’s team consisted of William Clarke, Mathew Chapman, Anton Willett, Shaylee Sydenham and Casey Anderson.

Playing against Nowra, the girls won the doubles but the boys lost theirs. Again the girls won their singles, but the boys encountered very strong

opposition and lost both theirs. Nowra took out both mixed with the final score Nowra 14 sets to Ulladulla 12 sets.

Next match against Wollongong the girls were again successful but the boys going down again. In the singles Shaylee was the only one to win and the mixed doubles were split. The score Wollongong 11 sets to Ulladulla 5 sets.

The next match was against the very strong Batemans Bay Team and Ulladulla were unable to pick up a set with the result Batemans Bay 16 sets to Ulladulla Nil.

Wollongong were the overall winners, with Batemans Bay second. Nowra and Ulladulla were equal on sets overall, Nowra was placed ahead of Ulladulla based on the head to head match.

Congratulations to all players, your never-say-die attitude was commendable and the club is proud of your performances.

JUNIOR CLUB NEWS

Two Irishmen were working for the city public works department. One would dig a hole and the other would follow on behind him and fill it in.

They worked up one side of the street and then down the other, then moved on to the next street, working furiously all day without rest, one man digging a hole and the other filling it in again.

An onlooker was amazed at their hard work, but couldn’t understand what they were doing. So he asked the hole digger, “I’m impressed by the effort you two are putting into your work, but I

don’t get it: why do you dig a hole, only to have your partner follow behind and fill it up again?” The hole digger wiped and brow and sighed, “Well I suppose it

probably looks odd because we’re normally a three person team.

But today the lad who plants the trees called in sick”.

RILEY WHITE REPRESENTS SOUTH EAST REGION

During the school holidays Riley White travelled to Gosford as part of the South East Region Under 10 team to contest the State Teams Championships. After two full days of singles and doubles against eleven other NSW regions, the SER boys played off for seventh place out of the twelve regions, which included

at least four metropolitan teams. Riley personally won four of six singles and three of six doubles. A fantastic achievement.

The format allowed their Manager/Coach, Mark Pritchard from Nowra, to sit on court and support the

boys during each match. Riley will also play in the Super 10s in Canberra during November.

The team consisted of (l-r) Patrick Muller (Nowra), Lachlan Rowing (Batemans Bay),
