1st XI Cricket The 1st XI played its final game of the year last Saturday and what a thriller it proved to be. Batting first in bleak conditions, our top order struggled to get going as it has in all of our other matches. The runs weren't coming thick and fast and wickets fell at regular intervals. Fortunately, our tail - predominantly Year 9s - wagged a little and we were able to make it to a low, but defendable total of 105 all out. The team knew that it would need to bowl field well to preserve its unbeaten record. While wickets were hard to come by, our bowlers kept the opposition's run rate in check and they had only notched up 40-odd runs at the halfway stage - but with many wickets still in hand. While the run-scoring picked up, the wickets started to fall at regular intervals and the opposition found itself needing five runs to win with one wicket in hand. Cometh the hour, cometh the man, Jesse Maher then stepped up to the plate. After having a confident shout for caught behind turned down by yours truly, Maher then sent a yorker crashing into the stumps, which sent his teammates into raptures. While winning the game was very satisfying, the most pleasing aspect for me was witnessing the level of respect that the boys have for the game. Without any prompting from me, the boys marked the passing of Phil Hughes by observing a moment's silence before the match and aligning their bats along the fence - as has been done in other parts of the cricketing world. It is comforting to know that we have young people coming through who are able to look beyond their bubble and show concern for the world around them. Elliott Carroll TIC Cricket

Rugby 7’s Nationals The Girls Rugby 7s team went to the Nationals in Auckland held 29th - 30th November. The Girls represented South Otago High School with fine spirit and played as hard as they could. We did not make the top eight of the competition but making nationals was a great achievement for the girls involved and the experience the girls got was invaluable. Bring on 2015. I would like to thanks the parents who came up to the Tournament and supported the team, coach Tony Pringle and the families of the girls. The support the girls received was much appreciated, so thank you. Hannah Sim
