HAVE AN OPINION ON NEXT YEAR’S CALENDAR?
CMS is inviting students, parents and the community to participate in
the 2012-2013 school calendar poll held March 17 through March 24.
A committee of CMS teachers, principals, administrators, parents and
community members designed two 2012-2013 school calendars with various options for
teacher workdays, annual leave days and holidays throughout the 215-day school year.
The two calendars and the poll are located under the Calendar Poll link on the home page of
the CMS website.
Superintendent Peter Gorman will review the results, evaluate comments submitted by staff,
parents and community residents, and could make changes to either calendar. He will recom-
mend one calendar to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education. The Board is sched-
uled to vote April 12 on the 2012-2013 calendar. Don’t delay your vote! The poll concludes
on Thursday, March 24, at 11:59 p.m.

Wednesday the Boy's soccer team defeated Carmel 1-0 thanks
to a goal by Oliver Leo. The team controlled the game and the
defense lead by the Hogan brothers, Chris Karas, Colin Ha-
ley, and Austin Kent held strong against a late rally by Carmel
to seal the shutout win. Please come out and support your

“Picking up STEAM” –Accelerating learning through experiencing the arts and culture
Through collaboration with the Arts & Science Council, the next CMS Parent University Family
Fun Day will focus on STEAM (Science Technology, Engineering, ArtsArtsArtsArts and Math).
This event will focus on developing educated consumers of Charlotte’s thriving arts and culture
campus, partner organizations and associated resources. Our goal is to empower families to
enrich their students’ education and strengthen their capacity for creativity, innovation and
critical thinking through meaningful experiences with arts and culture including:
• Access to museums, arts and culture venues
• Special performances
• Exposure to arts and culture campus
• Workshops
• Hands-on arts and cultural experiences
Student performances will be from 10:30 am -3:30 pm at various museums and cultural venues
along the “Cultural Mile”. (From the Mint Museum Uptown to the McColl Center for Visual Arts).
The PTA Reflections art competition along with the Charlotte Parent Children’s Art Contest will
be judged during the festivities.
Dear CMS parent or guardian,
As part of a district-wide commitment to increasing student achievement, CMS will begin using summative tests to measure stu-dent learning later this year.
Summative tests will help us determine if students are mastering the material required by the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, the program established for all schools by the state. These tests will also help us recognize which students are strug-gling so that we can offer them the help they need.
This is the first year for these tests, which have been created by CMS with the assistance of testing experts. In order to be sure that the tests are assessing what we want them to, we will have field tests next month. We will give the field tests early in April, which will allow us time to make any needed adjustments to the summative tests before they are given to students in May and June.
This year, the summative tests will not count toward a student’s grade. They will also not be used to evaluate teachers. Next year, however, the summative tests will be 25 percent of a student’s grade for high school students. It has not yet been deter-mined how much the tests will weigh for students in grades K - 8. We will also use them in evaluating teachers.
These tests will not replace the End-of-Grade and End-of-Course tests, required for all students in North Carolina. Instead, they will supplement what we learn from the EOCs and EOGs about student learning, allowing us to help students learn more effec-tively.
We have attached an information sheet about the tests, which provides specific dates and other information about the tests. Please feel free to call your school’s principal or the Office of Accountability if you have any questions about these tests.

Key dates and Information for Upcoming District Field Tests and Summative Assessments
CMS will be using district summative assessments as part of an effort to align all courses to the NC Standard Course of
Study or CMS objectives in the case of a local course. This will help to calculate student growth and provide data needed
to execute Strategic Plan 2014. Additionally, the summative tests support a recent recommendation made during our
AdvancED accreditation visit. In order to prepare for these tests, the office of accountability will administer a field test the
week of April 4th. After successfully administering the field tests, a pilot administration of the district summative assess-
ments will occur at the end of the 2010-2011 school year.
Items for these assessments have been developed by a professional item vendor and reviewed by CMS staff from the
office of accountability and curriculum and instruction. The field tests allow us to test the questions and use the data to
make informed decisions about the final version of district summative assessments for the 2011-2012 school year. The
tests for the 2010-2011 school year are listed in this document.
Field Test Background: Field tests are part of the normal protocol in developing tests to ensure that the test questions will measure what they are supposed to measure. No feedback from the field tests will be available to teachers or
schools since the purpose is to ensure the quality of test field questions not to measure individual student knowl-
edge. The field testing will allow us to administer a pilot summative test this spring to give feedback to teachers and
schools on the performance of their class. This feedback from the pilot tests is important to empower schools to adjust
their instruction for the 2011-12 school year in light of these new standards.
K-2:

Attention Rising 9th graders and Their Parents
Providence High School will host "Panthers on the Prowl" for rising 9th grad-
ers and their parents on Thursday, March 31 in the PHS auditorium.
"Panthers on the Prowl" is an orientation to Providence which will provide
information about the differences between middle school and high school,
specific curriculum highlights for 9th graders, a look at electives that stu-
dents may want to consider as upper classmen, as well as an opportunity to explore clubs, sports, and
fine arts extra curricular options. The program will begin promptly at 6:30pm with a meeting in the
auditorium. Please arrive a few minutes early so you can park and be in the auditorium by 6:30pm.
The event will conclude at 8:30pm. This is the first opportunity to begin the exciting transition to
Providence High School. You don't want to miss it!

CAMP:CAMP:CAMP:CAMP: We are very pleased and proud to announce that Gold Medal Squared will be back this summer to conduct our special clinic for all of our players, grades 9-12. This clinic will serve as our team camp for 9th-12th once again this year and will enable us to improve our team cohesiveness and take our training to the next level. The GM staff will be here July 25-28, 2011, to hold this team clinic. Any player who plans to play volley-ball at next fall (JV and V) is strongly encouraged to attend this pre-season clinic. This is where it all begins!!
First time players and rising ninth graders are accepted on a first register basis. If you are interested in attend-ing this camp, please email me your name, your volleyball experience and I’ll email you a registration form. Remember, I have limited space.

It’s hard to know about all of them and they change from year to year. My suggestion is to try a camp or two. Go to a position camp (all hitters, all defense…) and try it out. You benefit a couple of ways; you get a different coaching style/perspective, you’ll have a chance to visit a college, meet some new players and get plenty of volleyball practice!

Please attend as many of the summer workouts held at Latin on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursdays from 4:30-6:30 p.m. starting on June 13 (we will not meet the week of July 4). Most parents worry at one point or another if their child has something going on or if they are just displaying “normal” adoles-cent behavior.
