South Carolina 2007 - 2008
Information on the 2007 - 2008 program year current as of April 11, 2008
AmeriCorps: This year AmeriCorps will provide more than 440 individuals the opportunity toprovide intensive, results-driven service to meet education, environmental, public safety and otherpressing needs in communities across South Carolina. Roughly three-quarters of all AmeriCorps grantfunding goes to the Governor-appointed South Carolina Commission for National & Community Service, which in turn awards grants to nonprofit groups to respond to local needs. Most of the remainder of thegrant funding is distributed by the Corporation directly to multi-state and national organizations through acompetitive grants process. Other individuals will serve through AmeriCorps*VISTA, whose membershelp bring individuals and communities out of poverty by serving full-time to fight illiteracy, improvehealth services, create businesses and increase housing opportunities, and AmeriCorps*NCCC (NationalCivilian Community Corps), a 10-month, full time residential program for men and women between theages of 18 and 24. In exchange for their service, AmeriCorps members earn an education award of upto $4,725 that can be used to pay for college or to pay back qualified student loans. Since 1994, morethan 3,400 South Carolina residents have qualified for Segal Americorps Education Awards totalingmore than $11,500,000.
Learn and Serve America: Learn and Serve America provides grants to schools, colleges, and nonprofit groups to support efforts to engage more than 45,000 South Carolina students incommunity service linked to academic achievement and the development of civic skills. This type oflearning, called service learning, improves communities while preparing young people for a lifetime ofresponsible citizenship. In addition to providing grants, Learn and Serve America serves as a resourceon service and service-learning to teachers, faculty members, schools, and community groups.
Meeting community needs in South Carolina. More than 50,000 people of all ages and backgrounds arehelping to meet local needs, strengthen communities, and increase civic engagement through 96 national service projectsacross South Carolina. Serving with national and local nonprofits, schools, faith-based organizations and other groups, these citizens tutor and mentor children, coordinate after-school programs, build homes, conduct neighborhood patrols, restore the environment, respond to disasters, build nonprofit capacity and recruit and manage volunteers. This year, theCorporation for National and Community Service will commit more than $7,500,000 to support South Carolinacommunities through three national service initiatives:
Senior Corps: More than 5,200 seniors in South Carolina contribute their time and talents in oneof three Senior Corps programs. Foster Grandparents serve one-on-one as tutors and mentors to morethan 2,600 young people who have special needs. Senior Companions help more than 580 homeboundseniors and other adults maintain independence in their own homes. Retired and Senior VolunteerProgram (RSVP) volunteers conduct safety patrols for local police departments, participate inenvironmental projects, tutor and mentor youth, respond to natural disasters, and provide other servicesthrough more than 580 groups across South Carolina.
Together with the USA Freedom Corps, the Corporation for National and Community Service is working to build aculture of citizenship, service, and responsibility in America. To learn more about the Corporation or any of its programs, visit www.nationalservice.gov or call 202-606-5000 or TTY 202-565-2799.
