South Asian Today is being aired on Omni TV at 8pm from Monday to Friday and on Rogers TV (Channel 10) at 9pm all five days. The new show commenced on May 11. On Monday’s show Yudhvir Jaswal, CEO of YMedia and Group Editor of Midweek newspaper talked to Kanwar Sandhu, senior journalist from India on NRI Issues. On Tuesday, two guests debated on the newly introduced sex education curriculum in Ontario which is a very hotly debated issue in the South Asian community. The third show to be aired on Wednesday will hog light on the hot topic of ace Bollywood star Salman Khan’s conviction in the 2002 hit and run case. On Thurs- day two members of parliament, MP Parm Gill and MP John McCallum discussed the pros and cons of federal budget. According to Yudhvir, who has found success in multiple areas, South Asian Today will be an all-encompassing show touching issues that affect the South Asian community. Yudhvir with a massive fan follow- ing for disseminating news in the right perspective without adding any flavours to it has a relatable personality and the new show re- flected just that. As South Asian Today was advertised on radio shows prior to its airing on both TV channels, thousands tuned in to savour the new show that received enormous response from the community. Different organizations, politicians and community at large have sent many congratulatory messages to Yudhvir Jaswal and thanked Omni and Rogers for giving such a good platform to the community. Ranjit Singh Dulhay, Chairman of Ontario Sikhs & Gurdwara Council also congratulated Yudhvir Jaswal and said our community has many achievements and South Asian Today is another good achievement for the community. Fresh earthquake kills 37 in Nepal, 10 in India Kathmandu/New Delhi, (IANS) At least 37 people were killed and 1,129 were injured when a massive earthquake shook Nepal on Tuesday causing panic in the Himalayan nation which was still recovering from the devastating April 25 temblor. Ten people were killed in the states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in adjoining India. Cracked buildings collapsed in a heap of debris and landslides cut off roads as an earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale hit Nepal, with its epicentre not far from Mount Everest -- the world's highest peak at 8,848 metres. Nineteen people were killed in Dolakha, five in Sindhupalchowk, four in Kathmandu, two in Sindhuli and one each in Lalitpur, Sunsari, Rauthat, Dhanusa and Sarlahi, Nepal home ministry spokesperson Laxmi Prasad Dhakal said. The details of two other people killed were not immediately available. Terrified people ran out of homes and offices to open spaces and parks as the buildings began to shake due to the tremors. "It was frightening," said an eyewitness who clutched her daughter. "It felt worse than last time," she added Six strong aftershocks followed in quick succession. Four of the aftershocks had their epicentre at Kodari on the Nepal-China bor- der, north-east of Kathmandu, and the strongest aftershock mea- sured 6.3 on the Richter scale. Nepal Prime Minister Sushil Koirala said the government has deployed search, relief and res- cue teams in the affected areas. I CONTD. It is time to win again. There is no other acceptable outcome. The stakes are too high for our great Province. I will take every step possible—no matter how large or how small—to ensure that we are ready to take on and defeat Kathleen Wynne.” However, some community members think that this victory has been achieved due to the strong support of the 300,000 Gujaratis of the 1.2 million Indo-Canadians. Speaking to Southasian PULSE radio show, Gulab Saini confirmed that Gujaratis must have contributed in Brown’s victory, and even those who love India. He also added that Brown’s Indo-Cana- dian connection in fact played a key role in his success while pushing out the hugely popular MPP Christine Elliott. However, others think that the Indo-Canadian community might have played a very minor role as the voting was done by PC Party members right across Ontario. The story of Brown’s friendship with Modi, who calls him ‘Patrick bhai’, dates back to 2009 when he was the chief minister of Gujarat when Brown made several trips to India – a fact acknowledged by Brown. Following the Gujarat model, Brown has promised to follow Modi model to transform Ontario. It is worth mentioning that while hords of community members welcomed Narendra Modi during his visit at the Ricoh Coliseum Toronto, the Indian prime minister especially took time out from that packed hall and ensured attendance at Brown’s dinner thrown in honour of Narendra Modi at Allstream Centre Toronto. Brown on his part took two days off his campaign to attend events in Ottawa and Toronto with Modi. Brown also received him at the airport on his arrival last month and attended a working lunch with Prime Minister Stephen Harper the next day. Will Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s three-day visit to Canada help draw Indo-Canadian votes in the Conservative camp, something to be discussed in the upcoming editions of Midweek newspaper? MODI & MANMOHAN: 1 YEAR,SPOT THE DIFFERENCES

Our Conservative Government is extending the application deadlineto receive the enhanced and expanded Universal Child Care Benefit(UCCB) until May 15, 2015, so that more families can receive theirUCCB cheque in July.Currently, there are approximately 3.8 million families with childrenwho will automatically begin receiving the UCCB payments. How-ever, the Government of Canada estimates that there are 200,000eligible families who are at risk of not receiving the Benefit.Under the proposed enhancements to the UCCB, families would re-ceive almost $2,000 per year for each child under 6, and $720 peryear for each child aged 6 through 17. The new benefit amounts wouldbe retroactive to January 1, 2015 and reflected in monthly paymentsto recipients in July 2015.

The proposed enhancements to the UCCB are expected to more thandouble the number of families who benefit from over 1.6 million toaround 4 million and as a result there will be some Canadian familieseligible for UCCB who will need to apply or confirm their eligibility. If you are not currently receiving the UCCB, or if you have neverapplied for the Canada Child Tax Benefit and still have children under18 in your care, please go to www.canada.ca/taxsavings in order tofind out how you can apply. Our Government believes parents are best positioned to decide whatkind of child care is best for their children and for their family's indi-vidual situation. I encourage all parents to take a look at their uniquesituation and to take advantage of this great benefit.

New Delhi, (IANS/IndiaSpend) The economy rebounded; exports andimpor ts declined, foreign-exchange reserves grew; coal production, electricity generation and petroleum consumption rose, non-perform-ing assets (NPAs) in banking soared. There are great similarities between Prime Minister Narendra Modi'sfirst year in office - which he completes on May 26 - and the corre-sponding first year of his predecessor, Manmohan Singh's last term.In seven of 12 indicators evaluated by IndiaSpend, the data reveal asimilar trend - a reasonable economic per formance after an eco-nomic downturn. The large variations in the first-year period centre on:Industrial production: In Modi's first year, the index of industrial pro-duction (IIP) for eight core sectors (coal, crude oil, natural gas, refin-ery products, fer tilisers, steel, cement and electricity) grew 5 per-cent during 2014-15 against 4.2 percent the previous year. In Singh'sfirst year, the IIP for six core industries (crude oil, refinery products, coal, electricity, cement and finished carbon steel) grew 10.4 per-cent, compared to 2.8 percent in the previous year 2008-09.Expor ts and impor ts: In terms of dollars, expor ts and impor ts de-clined 2 percent and 0.5 percent, respectively, in 2014-15 from 2013-14. In Singh's first year (of his second term) expor ts and impor tsdeclined far more sharply, 4 percent and 5 percent, respectively, in2009-10 compared to 2008-09.Nuclear energy: With the commissioning of the Kudankulam Unit-1 of1,000 mw in Tamil Nadu during December 2014, India's installednuclear capacity reached 5,780 mw in 2014-15 from 4,780 MW in2013-14, an increase of 21 perccent. In 2009-10, it was up 10.6 per-cent from the previous year.Direct comparisons are difficult, considering that Singh was in hissecond term in office. Modi carries Singh's economic legacy, which

worsened considerably by the end of the term, attributed by observ-ers to a global downturn and misgovernance. But these indicators offer a broad statistical evaluation of the firstyears of Modi and Singh during UPA2.A journey through the numbersEconomic Growth: Overall gross domestic product (GDP) growth in2009-10, at constant prices, was repor ted to be 8.9 percent. After achange in calculation and base year, GDP growth isestimated to be7.4 percent for 2014-15.Agriculture: Agriculture, which employs about 600 million Indians, registered growth of 1.1 percent in 2014-15 compared to 0.8 percentduring 2009-10. The numbers indicate a long-standing - and worsen-ing - crisis. Foreign-exchange reserves: Forex reserves increased 12percent from $341 billion at the end of 2014-15 as compared to $304billion at the end of 2013-14. For Singh in UPA2, they increased 5.4percent from $241.7 billion at the end of 2008-09 to $254.9 billion in2009-10. Coal: Coal from India's mines increased 8.2 percent in 2014-15, later falling into a controversy over botched allotments, one of thereasons for the decline in UPA2's image. In 2009-10, production in-creased 8.1 percent. Performance of the coal sector is expected to

improve with the re-allotment of 67 coal blocks through an auction, although Modi's figure of Rs.2 lakh crore ($31.25 billion) windfall isnow contested.Petroleum: In 2014-15, consumption of petroleum products (diesel, petrol, LPG and the like) increased 3.1 percent, compared to 3.2 percentduring 2009-10. India's demand for petroleum products is expected to grow3.3 percent in the next financial year, according to the oil ministry.Electricity: A good indicator of an economy's health, installed elec-tricity capacity in 2014-15, rose 10 percentagainst 2013-14. In 2009-10, it increased 7.7 percent over the previous year.Renewable energy: With pressure on India to cut carbon emissionsrenewable energy - it is responsible for 12 percent of India's totalinstalled power - growth rates were high during both terms. The totalinstalled capacity of renewable energy repor ted a 7.56 percent growthin 2014-15 and growth of 17.20 percent in 2009-10.Non-performing assets: NPAs of public sector banks increased 17percent from Rs.2.27 lakh crore in March 2014 to Rs.2.73 lakh crorein December 2014, a carry-over from UPA2. Public sector bank NPAshad increased 23 percent in 2009-10 over the previous year. NPAgrowth rates of this magnitude can destabilise the banking system.

DELHI CHIEF MINISTER ARVIND KEJRIWAL DURING A DEMONSTRATION AT JANTAR MANTAR IN NEW DELHI (IANS).

New Delhi, (IANS) Under fire over his "anti-media" circular, Delhi Chief Min-ister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday suggested that some senior journalists couldcome together to float their own "honest and independent" news channel ornewspaper and his government will support any such move.Interacting with party volunteers on Google Hangouts, he also asked peopleto compare performance of his government to that of Prime Minister NarendraModi while claiming his Aam Aadmi Party's popularity had further gone up.Kejriwal, who has complained about sections of media in the past, said onSunday that media shows "us (as being) very aggressive"."We don't want to start any media (of our own). But, I think that several goodpeople in media are also sad over the goings on. If some big people workingin media start their own new channel or a newspaper in a joint effort, theDelhi government is ready to help them. We want an honest and independentmedia which show news, not false news...If anyone wants to start a goodmedia, Delhi government would help them," he said in answer to a query.

He, however, did not spell out the "help" his government would offer to anysuch venture. The Kejriwal government and his Aam Aadmi Party have beenin the media spotlight over a range of issues including suicide by a farmer ata party rally and inner party wrangling. The government also faced strongcriticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress for issuing a circularto its officials to report any news damaging reputation of the chief minister, his council of ministers and the government. On Saturday, the Delhi government had decided to file defamation casesagainst media groups for publishing or broadcasting any news that damagesits reputation and the circular asked any official who feels that a published oraired item damages his or the government's reputation to file a complaintwith the principal secretary (home). The stand is seen at variance with Kejriwal's own on the issue of defamationin cases faced by him.On his first interaction with party volunteers through Google Hangouts after

he became chief minister, Kejriwal said he will continue the process at leastonce a month. Noting that his government will complete 100 days on May 24and the central government will complete one year on May 26, he said:"People should look at the difference between both the governments."The chief minister said he keeps a tab on the working of the legislators andwhile most legislators were working fine, some were "a bit lazy."He claimed that AAP's popularity has increased since it formed the govern-ment in February after winning 67 of 70 seats."People's affection with our government has increased. We will get 72 per-cent vote if election was held today," he said.

Most nations today seriously consider the Chinesefactor when determining policy. The question uppermost in the minds ofIndian policy makers is: should we contain or oppose the rise of China, singly or in tandem with others, or should we seek an accommodation? There are no easy answers. No doubt Modi's closest advisors would begrappling with this question on the eve of his first official visit to Chinaas the prime minister of India.Just as India became independent, a vast strategic shift in the powermatrix of Asia took place. Japanese power lay completely shattered atthe end of the Second World War. The British withdrew from Indialeaving India politically divided into two states and its armed forcessplit - and soon in serious conflict over Kashmir. On the other hand,China wracked by civil war in the last century, with warlords holdingsway, not only became politically united, but a new invigorated and adetermined government assumed office. The strategic fulcrum of powerhad shifted in Asia from south to the north of the Himalayas. The question therefore that faced India's first prime minister JawaharlalNehru was how to deal with Chinese power on our northern borders. Inshort, Nehru's answer was to seek an accommodation with China andplay for time till India was able to fully develop economically andmilitarily to meet the emerging challenge. That he failed isanother question. Unfor tunately, for present-day policy plan-ners, the power equation with China has worsened sinceNehru's time to the detriment of India. China's economy isfive times larger than that of India; its military budget threetimes larger; and its foreign exchange reserves are ten timeslarger than ours. The Chinese have developed first-rate com-munications infrastructure right up to our borders; we arestill struggling. But we still retain one great strategic advan-tage - the Indian Ocean where the Indian Navy dominates. The Indian Ocean is the third largest ocean in the world covering about20 percent of water on the earth's surface. The Indian peninsula, whichstretches about 1,600 km straight into the heart of the ocean, dominatesits geographical space.

New Delhi, (IANS) To commit a crime and flee on a vehicle wouldsoon be a tough task for Delhi's professional criminals with policelaunching "Operation History-Sheeter", a first of its kind initiative tocurb crime in the city by cancelling the driving licence of toughenedcriminals.Police maintain cancelling the driving licence of criminals wouldbring down their easy movement in the capital and thus lead to a dropin snatchings and robbery. "My aim to launch Operation History-Sheeteris to halt the easy movement of toughened criminals in the city throughthe process of cancelling their driving licence," Special Commis-sioner of Police (Traffic) Muktesh Chander told IANS."The operation is in the initial stage and we are taking the help of thetranspor t authority and local police to make it effective," he said.Chander said the traffic police have compiled a list of over 6,000history-sheeters -- an Indian police term for criminals with long recordof serious crimes-- with the help of local police. Now we are planningto send the criminal history details of these history-sheeters to theDelhi transpor t authority with a request to cancel their driving li-

cences promptly," Chander told IANS."Once the transpor t depar tment issues notices to these offenders, wewill send policemen to ensure that the offenders submit their licencesto the officer," he said. According to Delhi Traffic Police, there is aprovision in section 19 1(a) of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, underwhich habitual criminals can be disqualified from holding a drivinglicence, but it is hardly put to use."The provision was introduced to deal with habitual criminals so thatthey cannot easily escape after committing a crime," a police officialsaid. Chander said the idea to make use of section 19 1(a) clicked inhis mind when a man sent video footage of a chain snatcher on theTraffic Police's WhatsApp number - 8750871493 -- last month. Thevehicle number of the chain snatcher was clearly visible in the foot-age, based on which the police managed to get his address and hewould be arrested soon, said Chander. As soon as the cancelled driv-ing licence of a criminal is inser ted inside the e-challan machine itwill show up his criminal history which has already been uploaded inthe central computerised police data base.

KANGANA RANAUT AND R. MADHAVAN DURING THE PROMOTION OF FILM TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS (IANS).

'KUCH KUCH LOCHA HAI'A MINDLESS DRAMA

CAST: SUNNY LEONE, RAM KAPOOR,

EVELYN SHARMA, NAVDEEP CHABBRA AND

SUCHITA TRIVEDI

DIRECTOR: DEVANG DHOLAKIA

RATING: *1/2

Devang Dholakia's "Kuch Kuch Locha Hai", touted as a sexcomedy, is in fact a large-scale mindless Gujarati drama oncelluloid, packaged like a never-ending Balaji Telefilms soap, with skin show and cheap, ineffective thrills galore. The story revolves around Praveen Patel (Ram Kapoor) aka PP,a middle-aged Gujarati shopkeeper settled in Kuala Lumpur,Malaysia. He lives with his dramatic and stereotypically loudGujarati wife Kokila Patel (Suchita Trivedi), whom he lovinglycalls KoKodile and musician son, Jigar Patel (NavdeepChabbra).Like most NRIs, PP is besotted by Bollywood and in fact has aquirky obsession for the Bollywood 'sex bomb' Shananya(Sunny Leone). How PP manipulates his way through to fulfilhis dream for a date with Shanaya, forms the crux of this longand convoluted tale. Unfor tunately, the premise is staid and it'streatment obnoxious. Most of the scenes are tackily canned. The direction is; careless, on the face close and upfront andtheatrically projected. On the per formance front, though over-the-top, Suchita Trivedias Kokila Patel and Mehul Buch as Chanpa Patel, PP's friend,

are the only two, who stand out. There is some element ofsincerity in their per formances. They are believable characters.Sunny Leone is there for the oomph factor and she deliversuninhibitedly in 'full' measure, without any qualms.Ram Kapoor as the stout PP with a moronic smile and consti-pated look, just hams his way through his per formance. Onceclaiming to be a method actor, he now delivers, just as he doesin every TV serial -- a lacklustre per formance. With buffooneryin most of his scenes, he is an eyesore in this film. Equallyunbearable, are Navdeep Chabbra as PP's son Jigar and EvelynSharma as Jigar's girlfriend Naina. They are a mismatchedcouple. This oddity is fairly noticeable in the scenes that theyare together. The script is packed with frivolous, laugh-by-the-minute gagsthat are below mediocre in presentation and projection. Thecharacters are cardboard thin with no depth or graph and thedialogues too are oft heard, cliched with Bollywood references. The music is passable and the background score rendered withtechno beats is too loud and ear blasting. This film is a highlyavoidable, unless you happen to be a Ram Kapoor fan.

'HAPPILY EVER AFTER'DOESN'T HAPPEN IN REALLIFE: TAYLOR SWIFTLos Angeles, (IANS) Singer Taylor Swift says most of her earlysongwriting was based on a contrived understanding of love, rather than personal experience."These were all projections of what I thought they might belike. They were based on movies and books and songs andliterature that tell us that a relationship is the most magicalthing that can ever happen to you," Swift said."And then once I fell in love, or thought I was in love, and thenexperienced disappointment or it just not working out a fewtimes, I realised there's this idea of happily ever after which inreal life doesn't happen."There's no riding off into the sunset, because the camera al-ways keeps rolling in real life. It's magical if you ask anyonewho has ever fallen in love - it's the greatest."Now I have more of a grasp on the fact that when you're in astate of infatuation and you think everything that person doesis perfect, it then - if you're lucky - morphs into a real relation-ship when you see that that person is not in fact perfect, butyou still want to see them every day," the 25-year-old singeradded. WARNER, HENRIQUES GUIDE SUNRISERS

TO FIVE-RUN WIN OVER KINGS XIHyderabad, (IANS) Leading from the front, skipper David Warner strucka decent knock, while his bowlers bowled economically, picking upwickets at regular intervals to beat Kings XI Punjab by 5 runs in theirIndian Premier League (IPL) encounter at the Rajiv Gandhi Interna-tional Stadium here on Monday. With the win, Sunrisers move two places up the points table from fifthposition to third with 14 points from 12 games, having won seven andlost five, whereas Kings XI stayed at the bottom of the table strugglingwith just four points from 12 games.Opting to bat first, Warner top-scored with a 52-ball 81, hitting sixboundaries and five sixes to lift Sunrisers to a modest 185/5. In reply, despite a late cameo by David Miller (89 not out off 44 balls), thevisitors fell shor t by just 5 runs, thereby ending their innings at 180/7 in 20 overs. For the home side, Moises Henriques (3/16) and Bipul Sharma (2/13)were the pick of the bowlers.Chasing a challenging 186-run target, Kings XI got off to a good star tscoring 37 off the first four overs, but lost opener Murali Vijay (24) inthe very next over. Shikhar Dhawan held on to a smar t, low catch offthe bowling off spinner Bipul Sharma. His opening par tner Manan Vohra (20) also got out trying to up thescoring rate. Incoming batsman Glenn Maxwell continued his poorrun in IPL 2015, scoring just 11 off six deliveries, before being caughtbehind off the bowling of Trent Boult. But Miller had other plans in mind. Right from the word go, his posi-tive approach was reflected in his bat. Scoring freely against bothpacers and spinners helped team score 100 in the 15th over. But with wickets falling at the other end it, the South African wasrunning out of par tners. George Bailey (6), Gurkeerat Singh (3), AxarPatel (15) all fell one after the other.Earlier in the innings, Sunrisers got off to a flying star t with openersWarner and Shikhar Dhawan scoring 56 off first six overs. But a bowling change by Kings XI captain George Bailey worked won-ders for the visitors, as spinner Glenn Maxwell broke the openingstand in his very first ball of the seventh overA clever Maxwell looped the ball up outside off seeing Dhawan step-ping out of the crease. The batsman was beaten in flight and wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha made no mistake whipping the bails off in aflash. The wicket did not bother Warner as he kept on scoring freely,

thus bringing up his half-century in just 36 balls. He was well suppor ted in the other end by incoming batsman MoisesHenriques (28). The duo struck the ball to all parts of the ground andalso sneaked in quick singles and twos to help the team reach 100 in

the 13th over. But Henriques had to return back to the pavilion in thevery next over as he was caught off the bowling off Gurkeerat Singh.Eoin Morgan (17) and Naman Ojha (2) also did not last long. For Kings XI, Beuran Hendricks (2/40) was the pick of the bowlers.

Raipur, (IANS) An impressive bowling display from Delhi Dardevilsearned them a six-wicket victory against league leaders Chennai SuperKings in an Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter at the ShaheedVeer Narayan Singh International Stadium here on Tuesday.Chasing 120, Delhi reached the target fairly comfor tably in 16.4 overswith 20 balls to spare. The win was Delhi's fifth in what has been a disappointing campaignfor them. They improved to 10 points after 13 matches but remainedat the seventh spot in the standings. Chennai too retained their sum-mit spot with 16 points from 13 matches.Delhi floundered initially while chasing the modest target losing SouthAfrican duo of Quinton de Kock (3) and skipper Jean Paul Duminy (6)

in a space of 10 deliveries to be reduced to 24 for two in the fifth over. But opener Shreyas Iyer (70 not out) and Yuvraj Sing (32) steadied theDaredevils innings, forging a 69-run third-wicket par tnership to guidethem towards the target.By the time Yuvraj was dismissed in the 14th over, Delhi's scoreswelled to 93, vir tually confirming a rare victory for them.Earlier, a stupendous bowling effor t from Delhi Daredevils ensuredthey restricted Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for a modest score of 119for six.Faf du Plesis top-scored for CSK with 29, with skipper M.S. Dhoni(27) being the other major contributor as the visitors set an asking runrate of 6 runs per over.

Zaheer Khan and Albie Morkel were the pick of the bowlers for theDaredevils claiming two scalps each. The Daredevils opening bowlers, spinner Shahbaz Nadeem (4-1-18-0) and Zaheer (4-1-9-2) bowled an impeccable line and length in thefirst few overs and kept the CSK batsmen on a tight leash giving awayjust 16 runs in the first six overs, the lowest in this IPL.Zaheer's patience was eventually rewarded as swashbuckling openerBrendon McCullum (11) fell lobbing one straight to Duminy at mid-on.McCullum's opening par tner Dwayne Smith (18) sent a few balls flying into the fence but then was adjudged leg-before wicket.CSK added 30 more after the first six overs to be at 46 for three at thehalfway stage as Suresh Raina (11) too spooned one to cover. But South African middle order bat du Plesis and Dhoni then resur-rected the innings running hard between the wickets and picking upthe odd boundaries. However, on a pitch that was keeping slow and low, Morne Morkelcame back to castle his countryman, du Plesis (29) as he choppedone onto his stumps with score flashing 83 for four in 15.2 overs.Dhoni then upped the ante belting Yuvraj Singh for 13 runs in the 17th over.Dwayne Bravo (8) hit another six to help his team get past the 100-run markin the 18th over but was caught out a delivery later.Zaheer in his first ball of the second spell got rid of the dangerous Dhoni (27)foxing him with a slower one that he skied into the hands of long-off.

AB, Kohli power Bangaloreto 39-run win over Mumbai

VIRAT KOHLI CONGRATULATES AB DE VILLIERS FOR HIS HUNDRED, MUMBAI INDIANS V ROYAL CHALLENGERS BANGALORE,IPL 2015, MUMBAI.

TORONTO TIMINGS

Mumbai, (IANS) AB de Villiers smashed a brilliant century and skip-per Virat Kohli played the perfect foil as Royal Challengers Bangalore(RCB) outscored Mumbai Indians by 39 runs in an Indian PremierLeague (IPL) encounter here on Sunday. The win propelled RCB twoplaces up the league ladder from sixth to fourth with 13 points in their kittyfrom 11 games. In contrast, Sunrisers Hyderabad (12 from 11) dropped to the fifth place, whereas Mumbai (12 from 12) slipped to the sixth spot. Riding on de Villiers'(133, 59b, 19x4, 4x6) and skipper Kohli's (82, 50b, 6x4, 4x6) unbeaten 215-runpartnership for the second wicket, RCB piled up a massive 235/1. In reply,Mumbai Indians could go only as far as 196/7 at the Wankhede stadium. For RCB, Harshal Patel (2/34) and Yuzvendra Chahal (2/51) were the pick ofthe bowlers. For Mumbai, Lendl Simmons (68 not out off 53 balls) and KieronPollard (49 off 24 balls) showed some intent to chase down the rival total, unleashing some big shots but the duo's efforts were not enough. The homeside got off to a worst possible start losing opener Parthiv Patel (19) in thefourth over. Skipper Rohit Sharma (15) after striking one boundary and a sixfailed to read a slower ball by Harshal Patel, thus finishing in the grip ofMandeep Singh at long on. But wickets did not bother opener Simmons andPollard as the West Indies pair went all out at the bowlers. After smashing six fours and two sixes, Pollard got a top edge from his batwhich was gleefully accepted by Mitchell Starc. Hardik Pandya (8), AmbatiRayudu (14), Harbhajan Singh (3) Jagadeesha Suchith (4) all fell soon after.Earlier opting to bat, RCB got 14 runs off the first two overs, but what followedin the third over was some real drama. Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma droppedChris Gayle on the fourth ball off Mitchell McClenaghan and Harbhajan Singhspilled Virat Kohli's catch in first slip off the next ball. Gayle and Kohli were 12and 8, respectively, when the catches were dropped. But Gayle (13 off 12) didn't hurt them much as Lasith Malinga in the very next

over got rid of the Jamaican left-hander. Gayle looked to slap the slower off-cutter well outside off and got another thick edge to fine leg. At that point, RCBwere 20/1 in 3.1 overs. The swashbuckling de Villers did not take much timeto settle down as he unleashed his skillful shots soon after along with Kohli.De Villiers hit the ball mercilessly, bringing up his 50 in just 29 deliveries. Hewent on hitting, sweeping, slogging the ball to bring up his hundred in only47 balls. He was well suppor ted at the other end by Kohli who playedwith ease scoring his half-century in 39 balls. This was the sixthconsecutive IPL season where Kohli has scored 300-plus runs. Healso completed 3,000 runs in the IPL.

Rohit blames poor bowling andfielding for loss to RCBMumbai, (IANS) Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma blamedhis side's poor bowling and sloppy fielding for their loss to RoyalChallengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League (IPL) en-counter here on Sunday. Against RCB's challenging 235/1 in 20overs, powered by A.B. de Villiers' 59-ball 133, the home sideonly managed 196/7, losing the game by 39 runs. "It becomesdifficult if bowlers fail to take wickets. Our fielding was also notup to the mark today. It's not at all a good sign to drop catches atcrucial moments of the game, which made things easy for thebatsmen. In the first six overs, we bowled well. But from sevento 15 overs, they scored over 100 runs. We needed to pick awicket at that phase. But we failed and that helped them to pileon a big score," Rohit said at the post-match press conference.

Real coach Ancelotti willing topersist with Ramos in midfieldMadrid, (IANS) Spanish football club Real Madrid's coach CarloAncelotti has said he is willing to persist with his experiment ofdeploying defender Sergio Ramos in a midfield role. Ramoswas preferred to Lucas Si lva, Sami Khedira and AsierIllarramendi in the midfield during his team's 1-2 ChampionsLeague first leg semi-final defeat against Italian championsJuventus away at Turin. The 29-year-old Spaniard felt uneasy adapting to his new posi-tion and was severely criticised after the game."I have not made a decision on whether Ramos will be amidfielder again," Ancelotti was quoted as saying by goal.com."Ramos in midfield is not over yet, though. He can play in manypositions and I believe in him 100 percent. He had a difficultgame in Turin, but that doesn't mean he cannot play in midfield.I will field him there again if necessary. Playing Ramos inmidfield is not a gamble. It was not a foolish move when webeat Atletico Madrid and Sevilla. I don't think it's reckless toplay Sergio in midfield," he added. Midfielder Gareth Bale, un-der fire for a poor performance against Juventus, was also de-fended by Ancelotti. "Bale's situation? We have not spoken withhim individually because we do not care about those kinds ofstatistics. Bale did not have a good game, but neither did therest of the team. There is no need to talk with Bale about this. Hewill play well again versus Valencia, as will Real Madrid ingeneral. We are fighting to win La Liga and the ChampionsLeague," he said. The Madrid boss also confirmed striker KarimBenzema would be up for selection though he is not 100 per centfit yet. "Benzema is not 100 percent yet, but he is availableagain. He is feeling good again. We will make a decision onSaturday whether he makes the bench or not."

NEW CHALLENGES FOR WORLDCRICKET ORDERNew Delhi, (IANS) The new global cricket venture by Subhash Chandra'sEssel Group has to be seen in the context of recent happenings in worldcricket, particularly in India. The uncertainty over the functioning of the Board of Control for Cricketin India (BCCI) and the resentment among some boards, particularlythe Associates, over the way the International Cricket Council (ICC) isrun may have prompted Essel to take on the establishment.Whenever a global cricket venture is talked about, the first name asso-ciated with it is none other than Lalit Modi, who is credited with all thegood and bad things of the Indian Premier League (IPL) he conceptualisedand successfully launched eight years ago. The Essel Group, whichfloated the short-lived Indian Cricket League (ICL) before the IPL put itout of business, is quick to deny Modi's involvement in its newglobal vision for cricket. Modi, on his part, also said he had nothingto do with it. Votaries of the free market, Modi and his mentorInderjit Singh Bindra always believed that cricket should beliberalised from the control of a handful of a cosy club of interna-tional boards/members. In fact, the BCCI had offered SubhashChandra the telecast rights for offshore cricket during Sharad Pawar'sregime, but this fell through for non-cricketing reasons.Subhash Chandra, perhaps, perceives himself to be modern dayKerry Packer whose World Series Cricket (WSC) showed cricket-ers how to make big money without conforming themselves totraditional forms of the sport. He does not make bones about hisintention that he is in the global sports business and feels cricket canbe taken beyond the confines of the Commonwealth countries. Not abad vision, but how will it work?Calling it a part of its business promotion plans, Essel has registeredcompanies in Australia, New Zealand and Scotland, the names sound-ing like parallel boards.
