Tour Summary
The Eastern South Africa and Western Cape comprehensive tour is designed to focus on South Africa’s
most diverse and dynamic habitats and the associated species. From the epic Sani Pass at 2,784m above
sea level to the dry Sand Forest of the KwaZulu-Natal north-eastern coastline, and the endemic-rich
Fynbos of the Western Cape, we had the opportunity to explore the full spectrum as we traversed the
country during our 18-day tour, connecting with a vast array of bird species.
Our tour started with a quiet and calm arrival
day in the bustling metropolis of Johannesburg.
Our convenient and well-appointed guest house
welcomed us and we settled in before meeting
for a welcome dinner later that evening, before
an early night ahead of a busy day of birding the
next morning.
We woke early the next morning, leaving our
guesthouse just before sunrise. Beautiful
conditions welcomed us as we arrived at the
Zaagkuildrift Road – a patch of arid Acacia
savanna which runs parallel to a small dry
riverbed and a great wetland. This represented
our only opportunity to connect with many species only found in the more arid savanna environment
usually associated with the western half of South Africa. Our day of birding here proved very
successful, rain had fallen recently and the pans and dams were full, assisting our attempts to connect
with many of the species. We encountered Knob-billed Duck, Spur-winged and Egyptian Geese,
Yellow-billed Duck, Black-winged Stilt, African Wattled, Crowned and Blacksmith Lapwings, Three-
banded Plover, African Jacana, Wood Sandpiper, Whiskered Tern, Brown-hooded Kingfisher,
Helmeted Guineafowl, Crested Francolin, Swainson’s Spurfowl, African Sacred Ibis, Hadada Ibis,
Great and Western Cattle Egrets, Black-headed Heron, the monotypic Hamerkop and Reed Cormorant.
A host of raptors also made an appearance,
including Black-winged Kite, Black-chested
Snake Eagle, Tawny Eagle, Shikra and African
Fish Eagle; while we also managed to connect
with a large number of Pied Crow. Red-eyed,
Ring-necked and Namaqua Doves, Grey Go-
away-bird, Burchell’s Coucal and Red-chested
Cuckoo were all active as we progressed. A
Pearl-spotted Owlet created pandemonium as
Brown-crowned Tchagra, Black-backed
Puffback, Green-winged Pytilia, African
Firefinch and Blue Waxbill mobbed it. Little
Swift, Barn, White-throated, Greater Striped and
Red-breasted Swallows, Marico Flycatcher were
also seen. A rather surprising family of White-backed Mousebird showed beautifully. The entertaining
Southern Red-billed, Southern Yellow-billed and African Grey Hornbills showed very well, and we
also had wonderful views of Green Wood Hoopoe and Crested Barbet. The Magpie Shrikes were
joined by a pair of Southern Boubou and Fork-tailed Drongo; while the thickets held Sabota and
African Wattled Lapwing by Markus Lilje
Crested Francolin by Adam Riley

Rufous-naped Larks. We managed to find a Chestnut-vented Warbler, a large number of Dark-capped
Bulbuls, a loud family of Arrow-marked Babblers, Capped Wheatear, and Zitting and Rattling
Cisticolas. The iridescent Cape and Burchell’s Starlings captured our attention while a flock of Wattled
Starlings flitted through the long grass. Cape and
Southern Grey-headed Sparrows were seen in
large concentrations, and Red-billed Buffalo
Weaver was actively feeding on the ground;
while Lesser and Southern Masked Weavers
were seen moving through the area.
In the fallow farmlands, Southern Red Bishop
were easily located as we also recorded three
species of woodpecker – namely Golden-tailed,
Cardinal and Bearded – all foraging in the
riverine thickets. The open grasslands provided
us with a chance to see African Pipit at close
quarters. The weather proved an amazing ally, as
we managed to connect with many of the area’s specials, most of which were very vocal, including a
couple of Northern Black Korhaan, an inquisitive Desert Cisticola, the jaw-droppingly handsome
Crimson-breasted Shrike, a raucous family of Southern Pied Babbler, a male Black-chested Prinia in
breeding plumage, an active Kalahari Scrub Robin, busy White-browed Sparrow-Weavers at their
nests, nesting colonies of Great Sparrow, a small flock of Scaly-feathered Weaver, a small family of
Black-faced Waxbill and a pair of Violet-eared Waxbill, before stopping for a good lunch in the field,
having also seen Slender Mongoose, a Black-backed Jackal chasing Goats, Vervet and Bushbuck.
After lunch, we departed the area as a series of storms began to
build and headed toward our guesthouse, where we connected with
Speckled Pigeon, Red-eyed, Ring-necked and Laughing Doves,
Grey-headed Gull, Speckled Mousebird, Cape White-eye, Karoo
Thrush and African Palm Swift before enjoying a wonderful dinner
and a good night’s rest as the anticipation grew with the knowledge
that we’d be visiting the Kruger National Park the following day.
The next morning, we departed Johannesburg and headed to Kruger
National Park – after a walk in the garden produced Red-headed
Finch, Cape Wagtail and Cape Robin-Chat. But first, our route out
of Gauteng would take us through some fallow wheatfields, where
we managed to connect with Grey Heron and Pied Starling; while
also managing a flight view of a Long-crested Eagle and Red-
winged Starling before stopping en route at the gateway to Kruger:
Nelspruit.
We made our way toward the world-renowned Kruger National
Park, a reserve covering 2.8 million hectares (6.9 million acres)
covered by a mixture of Acacia Savanna and Grassland Savanna
associated with the granite soils prevalent in the region. We entered at Malelane Gate in the sweltering
humidity of the lowveld, and proceeded to locate Goliath Heron, Reed Cormorant, Water Thick-knee,
Pied Kingfisher, Saddle-billed Stork, Red-crested Korhaan, gaudy Lilac-breasted Roller, wonderful

Southern Ground Hornbill, Chinspot Batis, Orange-breasted Bushshrike, Southern White-crowned
Shrike, Southern Black Tit, Long-billed Crombec, Red-billed Oxpecker, Red-billed Quelea and African
Pied Wagtail. We also managed great views of a few of the more common mammals, including Impala,
Waterbuck, Greater Kudu, Giraffe, Spotted Hyeana and Chacma Baboon. Of course, the biggest
attractions are the larger mammals in Kruger
National Park, and when we encountered a male
White Rhinoceros, a few African Buffalo made
a welcome surprise. We also saw a Leopard
Tortoise before the heavens opened and we were
caught in the middle of a series of massive hail
storms. We eventually arrived at Skukuza Rest
Camp. In the last remaining hours of the day, we
settled in for a good dinner before a welcome
rest for our weary bodies.
We got up and into our vehicle at the crack of
dawn, hoping to encounter some more
incredible wildlife associated with the riverine
forest and Grassland Savanna biome characteristic of this region. We managed to get excellent views of
the more common mammals and some incredible birdlife as we explored the eastern region of the park,
adding Common Ostrich, White-faced Whistling Duck, Red-billed Teal, Natal Spurfowl, Glossy Ibis,
African Spoonbill, Bateleur, Brown Snake Eagle, Wahlberg’s Eagle, Little Sparrowhawk, Yellow-
billed Kite, Black-bellied Bustard, Black Crake, Common Buttonquail, White-crowned Lapwing,
Common Greenshank, Common Sandpiper, Mourning Collared Dove, African Green Pigeon, Klaas’s
Cuckoo, Red-faced Mousebird, Purple Roller, Malachite and Giant Kingfishers, Blue-cheeked and
European Bee-eaters, Black-collared Barbet, Black-crowned Tchagra, Black-headed Oriole, Sombre
Greenbul, Wire-tailed and Lesser Striped Swallows, Red-faced Cisticola, Tawny-flanked Prinia,
Yellow-breasted Apalis, Green-backed Camaroptera, White-browed Scrub Robin, White-browed
Robin-Chat, Mocking Cliff Chat, Spectacled
Weavers, Jameson’s Firefinch, Yellow-fronted
Canary, Golden-breasted Bunting, White-bellied
and Scarlet-chested Sunbirds, and Yellow-billed
and Woolly-necked Storks. Hooded, White-
backed, White-headed and Lappet-faced Vultures
took to the air in the early morning thermals. The
open grasslands are also home to some incredible
mammals, and we were fortunate to see African
Elephant, Cheetah, a couple of Lion prides,
Plains Zebra, Common Warthog, Hippopotamus,
Common Wildebeest, Klipspringer, and
Steenbok; while also recording Southern Tree
Agama and African Five-lined Skink.
We arrived at Satara camp in the late afternoon, and set off for a brief walk around the camp, which
provided us with sightings of Greater Blue-eared Starling, Mourning Collared Dove, Red-billed
Buffalo Weaver and African Hoopoe. We then set off for another short drive in the evening, which
proved very quiet. We returned to camp for dinner, encountering a Bibron’s Burrowing Asp before
settling in for the evening.

The next day, we headed west to explore the more wooded habitat around Satara. We travelled parallel
to a riverbed as we transitioned from Grassland Savanna to Woodland Savanna, characterised by larger
broad-leaved trees. Along the way, we encountered a dead Elephant with some Lion feeding on it and a
couple of Spotted Hyaena nearby. We continued to encounter more interesting mammal species,
including Smith’s Bush Squirrel, African Wild Cat,
Common Dwarf and Banded Mongoose; while also
adding Helmeted Turtle and Stripe-bellied Sand
Snake. We were also extremely lucky with the
birdlife along the route, managing to record
Secretarybird, African Hawk-Eagle, Kori Bustard,
Emerald-spotted Wood Dove, Little Bee-eater,
Common Scimitarbill, Brown-headed Parrot,
Yellow-billed Oxpecker, Red-headed Weaver,
Chestnut-backed Sparrow-Lark, Red-billed
Firefinch and Harlequin Quail. After another
fantastic day, we settled in at camp for our final
night in Kruger National Park.
The next morning, we had a relaxed start as we departed Satara heading for Skukuza and ultimately
Wakkerstroom. Along the route, we managed to add Grey-headed Bushshrike and Black Stork, but
very little else on what proved to be a very quiet morning. We then departed Kruger, satisfied with our
time in the national park, and began our scenic trip to the Highland Grasslands of Wakkerstroom.
A couple of productive stops along the way produced South African Shelduck, Cape Shoveler,
Hottentot Teal, Southern Pochard, Little Grebe, Striated Heron, Common Moorhen, Red-knobbed
Coot, Marsh Sandpiper, Little Stint, Ruff, Cape Crow, Levaillant’s
Cisticola, African Stonechat, Village Weaver, Long-tailed
Widowbird, and Common and Jackal Buzzards. We arrived at our
wonderful lodgings in the late afternoon, collecting Amethyst
Sunbird, Blesbok and Cape Hare on arrival, where we enjoyed a
flavourful dinner, locating both Guttural and Raucous Toads, before
enjoying a much-needed sleep after a long day of travel.
The early morning, in the company of our local guide, Lucky,
started with beautiful, clear skies in Wakkerstroom. We headed off
in the direction of Daggakraal, and along the way managed to
locate Grey-winged Francolin, Blue Korhaan, Secretarybird, Red-
throated Wryneck, Grey-crowned and Blue Cranes, Black-winged
Lapwing, Southern Fiscal, Spike-heeled, Eastern Long-billed and
Red-capped Larks, Greater Striped and South African Cliff
Swallows, Cape Longclaw, Sentinel Rock Thrush, Wing-snapping
Cisticola, Mountain Wheatear, and Buff-streaked and Ant-eating
Chats. We also found Yellow Mongoose and Meerkat foraging in
the grasslands. On arrival at Daggakraal, we set about scanning the
burnt patches of grassland and were rewarded with fantastic views
of a Botha’s Lark – one of the main target species for our tour. We also managed to get excellent views
of Southern Bald Ibis, Banded Martin, Cape Bunting and Cape Canary; while adding Oribi and Black
Wildebeest to our mammal tally. We returned to the lodge for breakfast a short time later, encountering

Cape Weaver, Olive Thrush and African Harrier-Hawk at the lodge, where we enjoyed an amazing
spread and a very good cup of coffee.
After breakfast, we headed off in the direction of
Fickland Pan, where we went in search of the
other major lark target of the high-altitude
grasslands. After a long, successful search for
Rudd’s Lark, we eventually stopped for lunch
overlooking the pan, where we had decent views
of Great Crested and Little Grebes, White-
breasted Cormorant and Maccoa Duck. With our
hunger satiated, we again attempted, but failed,
to get views of the endemic Rudd’s Lark before
finally departing Fickland Pan. We then headed
through to Dirkiesdorp and managed to find
White-bellied Bustard, Cape Grassbird and
Martial Eagle. We returned to Wakkerstroom a
short while later, where we stopped to investigate a pan on the outer edges of town. Here we added
Lesser Swamp and Little Rush Warbler, Black-crowned Night Heron, African Marsh Harrier, African
Swamphen, African Rail and African Snipe, along with some mammal highlights in the form of a
Spotted-necked Otter and Black Wildebeest. We also found a Giant Girdled Lizard sunning itself. We
returned to the guesthouse to freshen up for another excellent meal, followed by a great night’s sleep.
Our final morning in Wakkerstroom started with cooler temperatures. We still managed to locate
Malachite Sunbird, Pin-tailed Whydah, and African Rock Pipit before returning for breakfast. After an
enjoyable breakfast, we departed the grasslands of Wakkerstroom
and headed east towards Mkuze.
We made good progress to Mkuze, and immediately decided to
explore our surroundings on arrival. The magical Sand Forest
biome, in which our accommodation was based, holds some
incredible species, and we managed to find Crested Guineafowl,
Red-fronted Tinkerbird, Square-tailed Drongo, African Paradise
Flycatcher, Grey Penduline Tit, Yellow-bellied Greenbul, African
Yellow White-eye, Rudd’s Apalis, Bearded Scrub Robin, Grey
Sunbird and Dark-backed Weaver to our growing lists. We also
located Natal Red Duiker and Nyala. After an awesome afternoon,
we settled in for a wonderful dinner and then retired to get as
much sleep as possible with an early start the next day.
The next morning, we were treated to incredible weather
conditions as we entered Mkuze Game Reserve at first light. The
lush vegetation made bird and mammal viewing testing but very
rewarding. The morning started well, with views of Gorgeous
Bushshrike, Eastern Nicator, Burnt-necked Eremomela, Violet-
backed Starling, Kurrichane Thrush, Pale and Ashy Flycatchers, White-throated Robin-Chat, Yellow-
throated Petronia, Acacia Pied Barbet, White-crested Helmetshrike, Purple-crested Turaco, African
Goshawk, Striped Kingfisher and Black Cuckooshrike as we began exploring the Sand Forest biome

before stopping for breakfast. After breakfast, we set off to explore the environment when a quiet,
tinkling call alerted us to the presence of another target species. A few moments later, we were viewing
the incredible Pink-throated Twinspot!
We then proceeded into the reserve and
investigated the various pans. Here, we
encountered Trumpeter Hornbill, Kittlitz’s
Plover, White-winged Tern, African Darter,
Western Osprey, Squacco Heron, Purple Heron
and Little Egret. Our final stop before departing
the park was a hide that allowed us to see
Common Duiker. As we left the park, we
stopped at the productive Mpempe Pan, where
Lemon-breasted Canary provided wonderful
views. After a fantastic day of birding, we
returned to the lodge before settling in for
dinner.
The next morning, we headed off to False Bay Park but the weather conditions were horrendous.
Nevertheless, we still managed to locate Great White Pelican. We returned to camp for breakfast before
we departed for St Lucia. We arrived in St Lucia and a short while later, we added Yellow-rumped
Tinkerbird, Yellow-throated Longclaw, Eastern Golden, Thick-billed and Southern Brown-throated
Weavers, Black-winged Stilt, White-fronted Plover, and Caspian Tern before a stop for lunch.
We checked into our accommodation a short while later, before we set off to explore the coastal forest
after a delicious lunch. The forest was a hive of activity: we managed to connect with Livingstone’s
Turaco, White-eared Barbet, Green Malkoha, Crowned Hornbill, Scaly-throated Honeyguide, Blue-
mantled Crested Flycatcher, Black Saw-wing, Olive Sunbird, Bronze Mannikin, Red-capped Robin-
Chat and Brown Scrub Robin. We then enjoyed an early dinner, before a night drive in the Eastern
Shores Reserve produced Fiery-necked
Nightjar, Southern Reedbuck, Thick-tailed
Greater Galago, Flap-necked Chameleon,
House Gecko and Red Toad to end off a
busy day.
The next morning, we visited the estuary,
where we recorded Pink-backed Pelican,
Greater Crested Tern, Brown-throated
Martin, Rufous-winged Cisticola, Brimstone
Canary, Pied Avocet, Common Ringed
Plover, Bar-tailed Godwit, Whimbrel,
Ruddy Turnstone, Curlew Sandpiper and
Sanderling. We returned a while later for a
wonderful breakfast spread at our lodgings.
We then made our way across to Cape Vidal for the day. The weather was pleasant as we traversed the
coastal grasslands with interspersed forest patches. We managed to connect with Croaking Cisticola,
Collared Pratincole and Southern Banded Snake Eagle before stopping for a lunch break, where a troop
of Blue Monkey and a Red Bush Squirrel joined us before we managed to record a huge flock of Green
Striped Kingfisher by David Hoddinott

Twinspot and a pair of Woodward’s Batis with very rewarding views. After lunch, we decided to head
back to camp, getting wonderful views of Tambourine Dove before we returned to camp and headed
off to dinner and an early night’s sleep.
An early morning departure allowed us to beat the rush hour traffic and pass through the vast
Eucalyptus and Pine plantations, almost devoid
of life except for a Long-crested Eagle, rapidly
as we made our way to Eshowe and the pristine,
climax scarp forest of Dlinza Forest Reserve.
Arriving as the gates opened, we were greeted by
slightly wet and cool conditions. We set off to
explore the forest, locating Eastern Bronze-
naped Pigeon at the entrance, brief glimpses of
African Olive Pigeon, Spotted Ground Thrush
and Chorister Robin-Chat while the tiny Blue
Duiker also made a brief appearance. A short
while later, we stopped for lunch in Mtunzini as
a series of strong squalls rolled up the coast,
where we found a Palm-nut Vulture sitting on a
Raphia palm.
After we had satiated our hunger, we began exploring the Mangroves in the Umlalazi Nature Reserve,
where we found a very wet Black-bellied Starling. With the weather getting worse by the minute, we
abandoned our effort, but were lucky when we found another Palm-nut Vulture sitting on a Raphia
palm as we departed. We then began our long drive through to Hilton before arriving at our overnight
stop, where we recorded Drakensberg Prinia before enjoying a fantastic dinner.
A beautiful morning greeted us as we began the morning with a birding walk, locating Neddicky, and
Red-collared and Fan-tailed Widowbirds before breakfast. We then set off to bird in and around the
Karkloof conservation area. The magnificent
conditions allowed us to explore the mistbelt
forest and agricultural land, and we managed
to add Forest Buzzard, Bush Blackcap,
Common Waxbill and Wattled Crane before
we arrived at Benvie Gardens. We quickly set
about birding the amazing gardens and
managed to add Bar-throated Apalis, Forest
Canary, Orange Ground Thrush, Southern
Double-collared Sunbird and African Dusky
Flycatcher. After an enjoyable morning, we
settled for lunch.
We then began the drive to Underberg, along
the way stopping to enjoy Red-necked
Spurfowl, Ground Woodpecker, Bokmakierie, Yellow Bishop, African Yellow Warbler, Wailing
Cisticola, Long-billed Pipit and White-necked Raven before heading off to Marutswa Forest, where we
found Knysna Turaco, Brown-backed Honeybird and an awesome display of up to 40 Cape Parrots
flying overhead from a tree they were feeding in. We arrived at our lovely accommodation at the foot

of Sani Pass as the sun dipped below the horizon. We had a delightful meal and a good night’s sleep
before a very exciting birding day to follow.
It was an early morning start to one of the highlights of the tour, a day trip up Sani Pass. The
magnificent blue skies were accompanied by very strong winds, which were not ideal for birding, but
we still connected with Intermediate Egret,
Barrat’s Warbler, the first part of an endemic
Southern African Bird Family – Gurney’s
Sugarbird, Cape Batis, Familiar Chat, Rock
Martin, Cape Rock Thrush, Malachite Sunbird,
Yellow Bishop, Greater Double-collared
Sunbird and Streaky-headed Seedeater as we
climbed the mountainside. As we approached
the top, a splendid Drakensberg Rockjumper
came bounding down a rock-strewn ravine to
give amazing views while we watched a pair of
Drakensberg Siskin and a Cape Bunting in the
immediate vicinity.
Reaching the top of the pass, the wind picked up substantially across the scrubby Karoo-like
environment while heavy cloud began to build. We still managed to connect with Bearded Vulture,
Alpine Swift, Mountain Pipit, Yellow Canary, Karoo Prinia, Fairy Flycatcher, Sickle-winged Chat and
Large-billed Lark before a quick lunch break, where we also found Sloggett’s Vlei Rat, Southern Rock
Agama and a Highveld Crag Lizard. We then explored the scrubby vegetation, where we managed to
find African Black Duck, Karoo Scrub Robin, Bearded Vulture, Layard’s Warbler and Fairy Flycatcher
before returning to the base of the pass, collecting Spotted Eagle-Owl, Western Barn Owl, African
Reed Warbler and a family of Rock Hyrax in the process. We finally arrived back at our guesthouse,
where we enjoyed a magnificent dinner.
The following day, we enjoyed an early
breakfast before finally departing Underberg to
King Shaka International Airport, where we
would connect with our flight to Cape Town. On
arrival in Cape Town, we made our way to the
beautiful and world-renowned Kirstenbosch
Botanical Gardens in the shelter of Table
Mountain, where we enjoyed lunch. We then
explored the manicured lawns and wonderfully
sheltered coves within the gardens, which
attracted Cape Spurfowl, Cape Bulbul, Olive
Thrush, Cape Canary, Cape White-eye, Southern
Double-collared and Malachite Sunbirds, Swee
Waxbill, Helmeted Guineafowl and a
magnificent group of Cape Sugarbird before enjoying a good coffee with lunch. We then made our way
to the guesthouse late in the afternoon, where we recorded African Oystercatcher, and Crowned and
Cape Cormorants before heading out for a delicious dinner, followed by an excellent rest.

The next morning dawned with excitement as we made our way to the small craft harbour in Simon’s
Town to embark on a pelagic trip off the Cape coastline. As we headed out of the harbour, Hartlaub’s
and Kelp Gulls were added to our list. We also got great views of Cape Gannet, African Penguin and
Greater Crested Tern as we exited False Bay. The activity increased drastically as we rounded Cape
Point. Here, we located Arctic and Common Terns, Brown Skua,
Sooty Shearwater, White-chinned Petrel and Great Shearwater. As
we progressed further, the birding quietened down until we found
a polling craft, where we recorded Wilson’s Storm Petrel, Black-
browed, Shy and Atlantic Yellow-nosed Albatrosses, Great-
winged and Cape Petrels, and Southern and Northern Giant Petrels
before deciding that it was reasonable to turn back for shore as the
activity dwindled. We still managed to find a breeding colony of
Bank Cormorant in the company of Crowned and Cape
Cormorants on a large rock before we arrived back at the harbour
and returned to our guesthouse; while an African Harrier-Hawk
showed well before sunset. At the end of a great day, we headed
out to enjoy an excellent meal.
The next morning, after breakfast, we headed out along the
coastline of False Bay to explore the Hottentot’s Holland
Mountain range. Our morning began with the exploration of the
vast cliff faces at Rooi-Els, where Orange-breasted Sunbird, Cape
Sugarbird, Familiar Chat, Grey-backed Cisticola, Karoo Prinia and
Cape Bulbul distracted us while we searched for our target
species, the Cape Rockjumper, which failed to make an
appearance. We did, however, find a Black Girdled Lizard. We proceeded to the Stony Point penguin
colony, near Betty’s Bay, hoping to connect with a few more interesting species. The superb views of
the African Penguins were much enjoyed by all the participants. This colony was only established in
1982 and has seen significant increases in the number of breeding pairs over the last two decades. We
also connected with the marine species of cormorant that breed here: Cape, Crowned and Bank
Cormorants were seen in the presence of White-breasted Cormorant, and Kelp and Hartlaub’s Gulls.
The resident Rock Hyraxes also provided some entertainment; while the Cape Girdled Lizards enjoyed
sunning themselves on the rocks.
The beautiful fynbos-based Harold Porter
Botanical Gardens provided a great setting for
lunch and our next birding stop, allowing us to
get close to African Black Swift and Fiscal
Flycatcher. After the enjoyable walk through
the botanical gardens, we decided to return to
Rooi-Els, where a single Cape Rockjumper
rewarded us with excellent views before we
returned to our guesthouse.
After an excellent breakfast, we departed
Simon’s Town bound for West Coast National
Park. Along the way, we had good views of

Common Moorhen and Red-knobbed Coot. Arriving at West Coast National Park, we immediately
connected with Karoo Scrub-Robin and Karoo Lark before spending some time searching for and
finding a Black Harrier. Other birds included African Marsh Harrier, Rock Kestrel, Cape Penduline Tit,
Black-headed Canary, Common Ostrich and
Crowned Cormorant during the interim. We
then stopped for lunch at Geelbek.
At the restaurant we had a fair amount of
success, locating Yellow Bishop, Grey-
backed Cisticola, Southern Fiscal and Cape
Weavers while enjoying a light meal. The tide
proved useful here, and allowed us excellent
views of Greater and Lesser Flamingos, Grey
Plover, Little Tern and Eurasian Curlew. We
were also very lucky to find Southern Black
Korhaan while also finding Cape Grey
Mongoose in the coastal fynbos. We headed
to the Velddrif Salt Pans, where we had
excellent views of Chestnut-banded Plover and Sandwich Tern. We then headed to our guesthouse,
where a magnificent home-cooked dinner was prepared before we drifted off to a comfortable sleep in
anticipation of an interesting day in the Karoo.
The Tanqua Karoo would play host to us for a full day trip. The open expanse punctuated with low
shrubby vegetation and an absence of large trees makes this area seem uninviting, but there were many
species to be seen. The Namaqua Warbler was the first species to grab our attention as it flitted
between the Phragmites reeds and grasses near the road. The nearby rocky outcrops also provided us
with excellent views of Mountain Wheatear, Cinnamon-breasted Warbler, Fairy Flycatcher, Pale-
winged Starling, White-throated Canary and Pririt Batis. An Acacia-lined dry river course produced a
single Pale Chanting Goshawk, Ludwig’s Bustard in flight and a distant Greater Kestrel. Further along
the road, Rufous-eared Warbler displayed atop
some sparsely-covered low shrubs; while Karoo
and Tractrac Chats all kept us entertained. A
Large-billed Lark mixed with a nearby Karoo
Lark. A family of Karoo Eremomela was one of
the highlight species of the day as we traversed
this arid environment. We also located a pair of
Double-banded Courser, and a fantastic
Armadillo Girdled Lizard and a herd of
Springbok. Satisfied with a great day of birding,
we slowly made our way back to Ceres via the
Gydo Pass. We arrived back at camp and
enjoyed a celebratory farewell dinner on our
final night on tour.
Our final morning was a relaxed start, allowing us to savour a good rest and reflect on an incredible
tour through this dynamic country. After a delicious breakfast, we departed Ceres via the Du Toit’s
Kloof Pass, where we attempted to connect with a Protea Canary, which proved elusive, before taking
the final stretch of road to Cape Town International Airport. After a memorable eighteen days across

five provinces, a vast number of diverse biomes, some fantastic scenery, during which time we
recorded 444 species of birds and 44 mammal species, the tour concluded as we arrived at Cape Town
International Airport.
