Bushfire Plan

Please be aware that the school has been placed on the Bushfire Zone Register as we have been identified as being in a Bushfire Prone Area. Reminder Student Formal Reports

Sorrento Primary School uses the Department of Education’s online environment called Connect which provides teachers, students and parents with secure access to a collaborative online learning environment via the Internet.

Connect provides a secure internet service that will allow access to a range of services: Sorrento Primary Parent Community

Student formal reports – this semester, student reports will be accessible for download via your Connect login. You are also able to access previous reports for your children.

Notifications about school events – fortnightly newsletter notifications are published via Connect, as well as incidental news and notes that relate to whole school or whole-of-year-level activities.

Classroom Community Class-specific notifications – many of our classes use Connect for whole-class messages and class events relevant to learning for your children.

Please note that Connect is the school’s preferred choice for whole-school communication, and is the method with which end-of-year student reports will be deployed this year. Notifications are sent via email to your email address, and there is a Connect app available if you prefer to receive push notifications via your smart phone instead. More information about the Connect app can be found at our school website: http://sorrentops.wa.edu.au/get-connected/ If you have not yet registered with Connect, please send the school an email at [email protected] and we can issue a registration email to get you started.

Waste Wise News

Litter Litter is an ongoing problem faced not just by every school, but by every community in Western Australia. It can cause harm to people and wildlife, and creates problems in our schools, public spaces and waterways. Highly littered areas attract more litter, illegal dumping and petty crime. Taking positive action against littering goes well beyond the visual impact, and helps provide a cleaner safer community.

Plastic makes up the highest volume of litter in WA. Plastic shopping bags, for example, can take up to 1,000 years to break down, and can also cause an estimated 100,000 sea turtles deaths. The plastic that is littered around your school yard may end up in the storm water drain, harming many other marine animals as well. Once you take into account that there are many other types of litter, it becomes evident that addressing

litter and littering is a necessary and extremely important task.

Entertainment Book

A HUGE THANKYOU to all the families that supported the Entertainment Book Fundraiser this year! For every membership sold our P&C receives $14. This year to date we have sold 70 memberships, which equates to $980 towards projects that make our school better for our kids, such as the covered playground on the oval we are striving for! The current membership runs until end of May 2018, so if you still don't have yours it's not too late! School Health

HOW MUCH SLEEP DO WE NEED? Sleep researchers believe there is no one magic number for ‘sleep need’ and there are a lot of individual differences in what children and adolescents need to sleep to be at their best. But below is a guide of the best evidence we have so far.............

Babies under 1: 14-18 hours throughout the day and night

Toddlers: 12-14 hours per 24 hour period

Primary school: 10-12 hours per day

High school: 8-10 hours per day

Adults: 7-9 hours per day WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE DON'T GET ENOUGH SLEEP? Many things can be effected when we do not sleep enough such as:

Behaviour - aggressive. antisocial, withdrawn, hyperactive, unable to control or regulate behaviour

Emotion - Moody, depressed, anxious, stressed, uneasy, unconfident, irritable

Planning - poorly organised, poor time managers, repeating grades, forgets lessons

Concentration - inattentive, lack of concentration, falling behind in school

Creativity - not working at full potential

Problem solving - poor behaviour control and difficulty in social situations

Complicated thinking - struggles with maths, sciences, languages, abstract concepts

Motor coordination - less sporty, more accidents, clumsier

Weight - being obese and overweight is more likely with less sleep

Health - poorer immune system - sicker more often

Learning - it is though that sleep, particularly dream sleep or REM sleep, is necessary for storing certain types of memory, particularly more difficult memories such as mathematical concepts and language.
