It’s hard to believe that it’s 2010 already! I don’t know about you, but 2009 seemed to pass far too quickly for me. My goal as President in 2009 was for Soroptimist to be a fun group in which to belong...my hope is that you all feel that we accomplished that goal. I know I had fun at the club yard sale, Day in the Park, Bingo, at our monthly meetings and especially at the annual holiday party, thanks to Sylvia P., Cheryl, and Liza. Marc and I truly enjoyed this year’s annual holiday party. Another very rewarding experience for me in 2009 was being able to adopt several CORA families and 21 women at Safe Harbor Homeless Shelter. Special thanks to Gayle Pietras for helping to put it all together, and to our shoppers Patricia, Sylvia W., Barbara, Jeannette and Gayle; and also thanks to Margie, Jo, and Dorothy for making the gift boxes for our Safe Harbor gifts. Not to worry, the fun is not over; we have another rewarding, fun and educational year ahead; on January 15, 2010, we will all meet in the parking lot of Marie Callendar’s at Serramonte at 6:20 a.m. to show our dedication to the Soroptimist campaign to Stop Human Trafficking. I know you’re probably thinking that getting up early enough to be at Marie Callendar’s by 6:20 a.m. doesn’t sound like much fun, however, I am confident that it will be once we’re there, and it will be rewarding because it will give us an opportunity to get the word out about human trafficking. PRESIDENT’S

MESSAGE

President Kelly

Happy New Year! It’s hard to believe that it’s

2010 already! I don’t know about you, but 2009 seemed

to pass far too quickly for me.

My goal as President in 2009 was for

Soroptimist to be a fun group in which to belong...my

hope is that you all feel that we accomplished that goal.

I know I had fun at the club yard sale, Day in the Park,

Bingo, at our monthly meetings and especially at the

annual holiday party, thanks to Sylvia P., Cheryl, and

Liza. Marc and I truly enjoyed this year’s annual

holiday party.

Another very rewarding experience for me in

2009 was being able to adopt several CORA families

and 21 women at Safe Harbor Homeless Shelter.

Special thanks to Gayle Pietras for helping to put it all

together, and to our shoppers Patricia, Sylvia W.,

Barbara, Jeannette and Gayle; and also thanks to

Margie, Jo, and Dorothy for making the gift boxes for

our Safe Harbor gifts.

Not to worry, the fun is not over; we have

another rewarding, fun and educational year ahead; on

January 15, 2010, we will all meet in the parking lot of

Marie Callendar’s at Serramonte at 6:20 a.m. to show

our dedication to the Soroptimist campaign to Stop

Human Trafficking. I know you’re probably thinking

that getting up early enough to be at Marie Callendar’s

by 6:20 a.m. doesn’t sound like much fun, however, I

am confident that it will be once we’re there, and it will

be rewarding because it will give us an opportunity to

get the word out about human trafficking. (Con’t Page 2)

RECLAIMING THE DREAM

The following information was taken from Vol. 83, No. 1, Sept/Oct/Nov, BEST for Women SIA publication

2009 Soroptimist Women’s Opportunity Award Federation Recipients -

• Lisa Wuthrich Curless, Bountiful UT

• Xiu Man Huang, TaiChung County Taiwan, and

• Miki Kitamura, Shiga, Japan

2009 Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award –

Stephanie Davis, Bridgeport, CT

2009 Soroptimist Ruby Award: For Women Helping Women* -

Edelvira Goes Ramos, Parana, Brazil

*The Soroptimist Ruby Award: For Women Helping Women

The Soroptimist Making a Difference for Women Award has a new name – the Soroptimist Ruby Award: For Women Helping Women. The new name recognizes and honors the first federation president, Ruby Lee Minar. Also, a ruby is a deep red gemstone associated with wisdom, importance, vitality, strength, vivacity, power and love: all words embodying the strong and compassionate women who receive this award. Beyond the new name, the award remains the same. It continues to recognize women who work to improve the lives of women and girls through their professional or volunteer work. During this transition phase, when referencing the new award, it is fine to say “formerly the Soroptimist Making a Difference for Women Award.” New publicity materials are available at Soroptimist.org.

At our February meeting we will focus on the

details and assignments for Step Into Spring and in March we will hold our annual Step into Spring

Fundraiser being chaired by Dee Anne. Remember she will need everyone’s help, so

please make sure to see Dee Anne about getting

your assignment, if you have not already done so. We will begin this year with our program

meeting on January 11. Sister Caritas Foster will speak about the tragedy of human trafficking

and how we, as a group and individually can make a difference.

Hope to see everyone at the next meeting.

Region Membership Team

“Each one Bring One”

Remember the Region Membership slogan “Each one

Bring One”? The intent of this was that each member of a

club brings in a new member during the biennium. Well,

Jeannette Holt has done her part; she’s brought in two

members during this period: Pat O’Kane and Flor Nicolas.

We’ve had Judy Lewis transfer and Oranee Daniels renew her

Soroptimist membership after moving to our area.

Dee Anne solicited club membership at an event

sponsored by the City of South San Francisco in November

and I have just contacted 5 of the prospective members that

indicated they might be interested in joining us.

We have done extremely well at continuing to bring in

new members. Let’s not become stagnant and be satisfied

with the amount of members we have.

We do have a wonderful group of women, but think

how many more there must be out there just like us? Let’s

try for at least two more members by June 30th

. It would

make your Membership Team very happy.

As you can see from all the pictures, the

Holiday Dinner was a big success.

Cheryl creatively personalized an

amazingly fun story for our traditional

“Right–Left Gift Exchange Game”. And

the photo on the left shows the cutest-

ever collection of Teddy bears that were

donated. We even managed to take a

group picture (above) for the Hi-5

Flyover in case the event is cancelled due

to inclement weather.
