Pobble Pets

Pobble Pets are an interactive children’s toy, used to promote learning and development. Through physical feedback, the child learns to care for another being (the Pobble Pet) thereby coaxing them out of the egocentric stage of their childhood. The toy was designed to suit the new Early Years Learning Framework now being implemented into Queensland kindergardens, and to aid the teachers in their daily data collection. Pobble pets also send data directly to the parents via an online /app system, which keeps Mum and Dad in touch with their child’s daily activities and helps with the transition from home life to school life.

Group project at QUT.I worked mainly on concept and story design, app system design, presenta-tion, research and development and interviews.

2Festival Feet

Festival Feet are a clever redisign of the gumboot, designed to withstand the muddiest, toughest, most dangerous moshpits at any music festival. Festival feet have a simple yet innovative business model which allows the product to be sold to the public at a relatively low cost. The panelling on the shoe has been designed to allow sponsors to advertise directly on the side or back, meaning that maximum profit can still be made while keeping costs lower than that of competitors .

Group project at QUT.I worked mainly on the physical design, the business model and I made the prototype.

3Lume

Lume is an interactive, laneway luminaire and plaything designed for the Brisbane City Council’s laneway project. It is a light canvas that allows one to draw in light on it’s surface by utilising ZeroTouch technology. While giving off ambient light, this canvas can be used as a social media outlet during BCC events by having a camera system set up and pictures can be uploaded to Facebook and Instagram for competitions. While not in use by the public, Lume can be set up with pre programmed lighting sequences reminiscent of a cuttlefish chaging colour.

Finalist in the 2013 IESStudent Luminaire Design Awards.Individual project. I did the entire project from research and develop-ment, to graphic work, to CAD etc.

4IES Children’s hospital lighting design

Hospitals may take care of a child’s physical health, but the environment they are in is psychologically and emotionally stressful. This lighting design is that of a seperate children’s playspace within a hospital. It was designed to have colour, to be lofty and cavernous so as not to feel claustrophobic and to be interactive. The cuttlefish canvas is a luminiare that features; it is a panel that is linked up to the music and it pulsates along to the sound. Patients can learn to push the ripples along the surface in time to the music, like a musical instrument. Music therapy is therapeautic and is shown to help children in their development.

Winner of the Innovation Award in the 2012 IES student lighting design awards. Pictured: Medusas Luminaire. Individual project, all work completed by me including design of several luminaires and architectural lighting design.

5Naviir

People with visual impairment can see, but what they see may be limited. The problem they face with navigation is that the colours and shapes merge together in the built environment- what they need highly contrasted vision. Naviir is the solution. By projecting a contrasted augmented reality in front of the individual by using infared lazer projection, these programmable glasses can be altered to suit each user’s needs. There are bone conduction headphones in the arms of the glasses which give audio GPS instructions and the glasses themselves are designed to be operated using touch alone. The charging and carry case system are tactile and use contrasted colours for ease of use.

Individual project at QUT.I did the entire project including a 16,000 word thesis, intensive research including interviews, graphic work, CAD work and presentations.

6Mexican Elote and Ribs Street Food Cart

Street Food Australia were created to bring street food to the streets of Brisbane. One of the carts designed for the fleet was this Mexican Elote and Ribs cart. The cart was designed to be compactible and to house everything needed for the cooking session including water, gas, raw food and utensils. To create the cart, 1:1 scale models were created and inserted into scenarios to best design the cook surface to include matters of food safety, chef safety/comfort and customer safety/comfort.

Made for Street Food Australia.Originally a group assignment at QUT.I was strongly involved in full scale model making, presentation of designs, concept developments.

7Stage Design for Mirror Mirror Agencies

Between 2009-2011 I was the head stage designer for the Mirror MIrror Agencies runway shows. I managed a team of 4 and together we created sets and props for 4 runway shows in Brisbane at the Monastery, C Gallery, Lightspace and The Power-house. We worked with small budgets, tight deadlines and cross collaboratively with other sections in the agency. I contributed to artistic direction of the shows and worked closely with the management team and the director.

8Light and water, Thailand

As a part of the 2nd international light and water seminar in Bangkok, Thailand we had to design a lighting mockup in collaboration with the monks at Wat Prayoon along the Chao Phraya river. We worked closely with students and teachers from Australia, China, Singapore and Thailand using lights donated by Phillips and We-ef. The main idea of the design was to create the idea of lightness and floating in relation to the recent water festival, and we were restricted to mainly amber colours as these are auspicious colours in Buddhism. We created gobos, used gels and harnessed other bits and pieces such as waterbottle and candles.

Workshop with QUT and other world-wide universities. I was strongly involved in concept development, construction of physical lighting design and presentations.
