An expression whose meaning is not predictable from the usual meaning of its constituent elements. Ex: A leopard can’t change his spots.
IDIOM
A comparison using like or as. Ex: Your as light as a feather.
Simile
Uses were, was, and it to compare 2 things. Ex: My brother was boiling mad.
Metaphor
The use of 2 or more words in a sentence with the same letter. Ex: How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
Alliteration
An exaggerated statement used to heighten effect. Ex: I’m so hungry I could eat a horse.
Hyperbole
Giving something human qualitiesEx: The stars danced playfully in the moonlight sky.
Personification
The use of words that mimic soundsEx: BANG! CRASH! BOOM!
